Backup every Sync!!!!

everytime I sync my iphone 3g it does a backup first which takes close to an hour and then syncs(which takes 30 seconds)...
How do I stop this?
I can cancel the back up and it proceeds to sync, but this can't be a good method...
also under itunes prefs/syncing there is a box that says the following iphones blah blah blah backed up on this comp...and under that is a backup that is listed as:
Unknown 12/31/00 7:00 PM
(Yes my computer's and iphones time are set correctly)

I stood on line 3 and a half hours to get the phone, but that was fine. I could not actually use the phone for about 5 hours after purchasing it.Fine again. When the phone did work, I had the backing up forever each time I synched. So after what seemed like an hour, it worked. While using one of the applications I bought from the apps store in iTunes the phone crashed. But now my phone doesn't reboot at all. It's just showing the apple screen. I did the hard reboot- no luck. Then I tried to restore it in iTunes but ITunes responded that my phone was "corrupted" and would not recognize it. It did not show up in iTunes under devices. After waiting an hour on hold before finally speaking with a att rep I was told to repeat the process(hard reboot, restore in iTunes) which was again, unsuccessful. So after being assured that a) there is stock and b) I won't have to stand on line again I am off to the apple store to get my phone replaced. I am obviously a fan of the product but this is becoming a mess! Let me know if anyone interested in how this turns out.

  • Itunes Backup every 2 or 3 sync's!

Have the 2G model Iphone. I have installed 2.0 software and it backs up my software every 2 or 3 times I sync it. Help or advise would be appreciated.

    Hey guys,
I'm having the same experience (backup every 2-3 syncs) but my backups are taking a really long time (about 5 minutes). I recall my phone backing up pre-2.0, but I seem to remember the backups only taking a couple of seconds. I was barley even aware of them.
Do either of you notice backups taking longer on your phones?
    Thanks,
    Chip

  • IMPORTANT: No more "backup every time" or endless apple logo crashes!

So after 11 crashes where the iPhone wouldn't come back after bootup, I had enough. I took it to the Apple Store and they replaced it. Since then, it crashed 2 more times. Yet again, had enough, and decided to try some experimenting.
Using this method, I have had no more crashing issues. What's more, the iPhone ONLY tried to do a backup the first time, and doesn't even try (I don't have to press the X) when I sync now. IF you are suffering from the endless apple logo crash, *TRY THIS:*
    1. Unplug your iPhone. If you're stuck at the logo, press the power/lock and home buttons at the same time. Hold them until the phone shuts off
    2. Hold down the home button and plug in the sync cable while holding. Do not let go of the home button until the screen shows up with a cable connecting to iTunes on the phone
    3. Press the button to recover your phone. Wait for the Recovery to finish and the phone to reset
    4. Go into EDIT > PREFERENCES > SYNCING on iTunes. Delete all old backups that you feel comfortable deleting (I got rid of all of them). Also (*VERY IMPORTANT*), click the checkbox next to "Disable automatic syncing for all iPhones and iPods".
    5. Select the radio button to set your iPhone up as a new iPhone. Wait for activation.
    6. Click to sync whatever you want on the Info, Ringtones, Photos, Podcasts, Music, and Movies tabs. *MAKE SURE YOU SELECT NOT TO SYNC APPS.*
    7. Perform a sync, then eject the phone
    8. Set up any config you want (email accounts, settings, ringtones, etc)
    9. Plug the phone in and press the sync button (it will not autosync). When you do, it will sync and take a backup. This backup takes about 3 seconds.
    10. Go to the Apps tab and select to sync ONLY clicked apps. Unclick all apps.
    11. Add your apps one at a time, like so: click the checkbox next to one app, press sync (takes a small amount of time per app). Once the app is done installing per iTunes, look at your iPhone. You'll notice the little spinning internet indicator at the top left is still spinning. Wait until it is done!
    12. Repeat step 11 until finished. Click the checkbox, press sync, wait, *ONE APP AT A TIME*. iTunes will not try to backup every time.
When you're done, eject your iPhone, move things around, do all your logins you have to redo since it crashed, etc. If you want to, plug the iPhone back in. It will not auto-sync since you turned that off. You can click on another app, click sync, and it syncs the new app WITHOUT a backup!
*_WHAT TO DO IF THERE IS A PROBLEM SYNCING AN APP_*
If you try to sync an app (one at a time), and during the sync someone calls you or you get an error in iTunes saying the app had a problem, go to your Apps tab, UNCHECK the app you were just trying to sync, and press sync again. Allow it to de-install fully, then click the box and press sync again to try one more time.
*_WHAT TO DO IF YOUR PHONE STARTS TO LAG_*
I don't know if this is a good idea or if it is approved, but when I open a bunch of different programs, my phone starts to get slower and slower. I also notice that when you go into a program you've already opened, it's usually quicker than the previous time. So I'm not sure if this is like OSX, where closing an app doesn't free it up, only by right click closing does it truly close. So here's what I do:
Go into an app you've already exited. Instead of exiting again, hold down the Home button for about 6 seconds until the app disappears. That seems to cause it to truly close, and the phone will work faster on other things. Now as a disclaimer, you MIGHT be crashing the app...I don't know. But it seems to help.

Hmm. This sounds pretty similar to my problem. I have gone through three iPhone 3Gs so far in Japan.
Basically, got two iPhones on launch day, probably the first two sold in my area (White and Black). One for my wife and one for myself. I have a new iMac with 4GB and a year old Macbook Pro 17 with 2GB.
Each iPhone was synced separately on different computers with different iTunes accounts (Leopard). I have a US and a Japan iTunes account, my wife a Japan iTunes account.
Anyway, I bought some apps on both sides (Japan and US iTunes sides sepperate computers) and none ever completed there installs. In fact they rebooted the iPhone (both of them) and iTunes crashed. When the iPhones rebooted sometimes the app was on the iPhone other times not.
Sometimes the crash was so bad the iPhone would not boot up at all and I did a firmware restore (think I have done this 18 times so far). But the problem persisted and not a single app on either iPhone or either computer would install without first crashing iTunes and the iPhone.
At some point, the crash was so bad the firmware restore no longer worked and basically bricked the phone entirely as it refused to recognize the SIM or iTunes and couldn't even do a restore. I brought that back to Softbank (the carrier in Japan) they had some tech folks look at the phone.
After scratching there head, switching SIMS and plugging it into various computers, and doing a bunch of other things they replaced my iPhone with another new one from some special inventory they had of factory new phones in cardboard shipping boxes with no packaging except for the sealed phone itself (no wires). I believe these where meant to be loaners while your phone was being sent back to Apple for servicing (this is what I was told afterward in a voicemail message which I still have from Softbank apologizing for the trouble).
My wifes never died completely but I have stopped installing any apps on it because it still crashes on installs AND removals. It never successfully installed anything without first crashing the phone and iTunes.
Here's the kicker, as of yesterday morning I was on phone number two, and it was still crashing on installing ANY software from the App store, free or otherwise, via iTunes, or directly from the app store...
Guess what, it died yesterday and had a blank screen and wouldn't boot at all nor would restore work at all. So today, I went to Softbank again and got it replaced once again (a loaner for the loaner), with a new one no questions asked AND guess what, there was a very upset guy sitting with a store rep with EXACTLY the same problem I had and I overheard the Softbank rep on the phone speaking to another Softbank store I assume asking for another loaner iPhone as they no longer had any loaners left in the store because they lent them all out.
So being a noisy guy that I am, I asked sympathetically, 'Hey, sounds like Apple is giving you guys a lot of grief.' The guy told me they had replaced 28 iPhones that day at his branch alone because they couldn't revive the phones (forget about activating them) and Apple was not being very helpful. So they have been mailing them to some service center in the US (I was told) where Apple techs where going over the handsets to get some firm answers.
So now, I have been thru 3 new iPhone 3Gs that have exactly the same problem on two different computers and a forth one that does the same and a guy at the store next to me getting a replacement phone for the same reason and a store that is out of loaners cause they got so many returned dead.
The fact that Softbank is not even looking at my phone anymore and simply replacing it tells me this is a systemic and a widespread problem at least in Japan and causing Softbank great grief and I am not too amused myself as I got better things to do then visiting cell stores and restoring firmware.
So clearly there is something very wrong with our beloved iPhone 3Gs firmware or possibly the phone itself or Japan got junk sent over.
"Apple, fix this problem because you don't want to end up with tens of thousands of dead iPhones on your doorstep do you? -- if you don't already have a truckload from Japan and you might want to fix the 3G reception while your at it cause its embarrassingly terrible in 3G rich Japan."
Aside from that, I do really love the iPhone and Apple, but love does have its limits and I am starting to feel that I am in an abusive relationship.

  • IPod Touch, iOS6, "Other" memory increasing every sync?

I have noticed that since the "update" to 6.0, my iPod touch has an increasing amount of "other" memory with every sync. The amount of "other" increases by about 400 mb every time I sync it. Even when I synced it twice in a row with no new podcasts or anything at all that would have been different from the sync just performed.
I restored it from backup, and the "other" memory stayed the same. When it got up to 14 GB, I restored and set up as "new", and the "other" memory dropped back to normal, then immediately started increasing with each sync.
I de-selected the only 2 apps that have updated recently, the only thing I couldn't undo is iOS 6. Other than that, I have done nothing different than I've been doing for the 2+ years I've had it.
Is there something I have set wrong in the settings since it's a touch and not a phone? I didn't change anything when 6 was installed, should I?
I really don't want to have to restore this thing as "new" every month!

Thanks for your reply.  I saw those threads and a few others when I searched earlier, but not the one about Safari. I don't use Safari often, but I will try clearing the cache. That's the only one of those things I haven't tried.
I wondered what the "other" was a long time ago, and looked it up. It was behaving normally until recently, after the iOS update, when it started gaining .2-.5 GB per sync. And restoring as "new" didn't stop that, it only reset the "other" to a normal size.
I mainly use this iPod for podcasts & mp3, and watching videos. A few other apps, nothing new added or changed that I could maybe think might be the cause.

  • ITunes will not let me backup and sync to new phone encrypted password??

iTunes will not let me backup and sync to new phone encrypted password?? I've never set a password for my old iPhone 3gs but tried my old Apple ID sign-in passwords to no avail. I've simply sat here so frustrated....my husband sync'd his new iPhone 4 no problem, somehow the checkbox shows Encrypted password and I'm at a loss on how to change this/find the password and transfer my old backup onto my new phone so I can use it. Can anyone help? Tnx

    John,
buy an iTunes Music Card and redeem it to your account - the "none" option should be available then.

  • What happens at each step of an iPhone Backup and Sync?

Can someone tell me exact what is happening at each step of an iPhone backup and sync?
    I see 5 to 7 steps.
So what has happened after step 1, then after step 2, and so forth?
I would appreciate if only those who knows exactly what happens will list it in their reply.
Please don't tell me to google the question, or point me to a link. I tried all those steps, and I could not find the answer.
If you can't tell me precisely what happens after each step of a sync, please don't reply.

  • IPod Touch Backup, when syncing with iTunes 9

I have just switched to an Apple mac and now have a MacBook.
I copied the PC My Music folder to the Mac and dropped it over iTunes and successfully imported my library into iTunes on the MacBook.
When connecting my iPod Touch it asked me to confirm that I wanted the contents erasing and the current iTunes library syncing to the iPod Touch.
I answered yes and this was also successful.
My problem now is that when I connect the iPod Touch to the MacBook, it does recognise it and it does connect and it does start the backup before sync, but then the bckup runs very slowly and indeed so slow that it would take hours to actyally complete the backup if indeed it is working.\
I've checked that files are indeed being written to the Mobilesync Backup area and they are, but it's too slow.
Anybody got any ideas why this would be the case. My MacBook has 82+ GB free space and my iPod Touch is a 16GB device with 3+ gb free space.
Please forgive me in that I am an Apple MacBook newbie, although I have been successfully syncing the device with a Windows PC for some time prior to moving to a Mac.

Many thanks for your reply, however, it doesn't help me, because I have an iPod Touch with no camera and so the camera roll issue does not arise.
The sync process doesn't get to sync either, since it is in "Backup iPod" status and would be for what would be many hours, possibly as much as 24 hours.
Is this normal for a 1st Backup between a MacBook and an iPod Touch via USB to iPod cable provided with the iPod?
The iPod is about 14 months old and the MacBook is quite new, i.e. just a few months.

  • Time Machine doing a full backup every time it runs

My Time Machine seems to be doing a full backup every time it runs on the hour. The backup size is about 19GB. Shouldn't hourly and daily backups be much smaller after you run Time Machine for the first time?
I remember a while back, my hourly backups were a couple of minutes.....now they are 30 minutes.

  • Backup without sync

Ok, so my in-laws rely on me for tech support, and this time they are really challenging my ability to solve the problem.
Mom has an iPad 1, which cannot update to iOS6, and thus cannot be updated any more without breaking the apps on her device.
Dad just upgraded to a new iPhone 4s (since the price dropped with the iphone 5 announcement), and he wants to keep everything updated to the newest level.
Here's the thing: they share their iTunes account, which means that several of their apps are on both devices. The problem that I am anticipating is that dad will update the apps on his iphone 4s, then plug it in to sync it, and it will overwrite the versions of those apps that mom uses on her iPad 1, and then she will plug her iPad into the computer and the we versions will sync up and then won't work the next time she tries to use them.
So.... I thought of making separate accounts for them and copying their iTunes account over, but they have so much music that their hard drive can't handle two copies of the same iTunes library.
I also thought of whether it would be possible to conditionally set the iPad 1 to only backup when it is plugged in, but the iPhone 4s to do the full backup and sync.
I also thought of setting the iPhone 4s up to only iCloud sync and tell dad to never plug it in again. Not sure that would be possible since he would want to switch out the music on it, and I don't think you can do that without syncing apps.
Not sure where else to go with this.
    Help?

Go to iTunes/Settings/Devices to disable autosync.
After that back up manually by right clicking on it in the device list and choosing "backup"

  • Backup or sync?

Hi,  I am new to itunes.
I have the iphone 4s and would like to know the difference between backup and sync on the device menu in itunes.

sync is where itunes will update your phone with anything that is new on to your phone. back up is where itunes takes all the data from your phone and backs it up to itunes so that way in the future, you can restore it if need be. say you lost your phone and got a new iphone. you could actually restore everything u had to the new one because it was backed up on your itunes

  • Cannot backup and sync after updated iTunes

Cannot backup and sync after updated iTunes. Have tried to hard reset iPhone (all data lost- sad) and reinstalled iTunes. Still cannot work.

It sounds like you bough the song only, not the song and the ringtone.
Ringtones via itunes are available in the U.S. only.
In the U.S. to make a ringtone you:
Buy the song with a bell - 99 cents
Find the song in your library and click the bell
    This bring up the editor.
You edit the song to the portion you want.
Then click buy to purchase the ringtone - another 99 cents.
Then it shows up in ringtones and you can sync.
As I said, this method of creating ringtones is available in the U.S. only.
There are, however, many ways to make ringtones:

  • Received App Error 603, now I can't connect to BlackBerry Desktop to backup or sync contacts/notes before hard reset

    Hi,
For the past several days, my BlackBerry Bold 9650 has been resetting frequently (often going to a white screen reading "App Error 603"), losing access to applications, and generally acting terribly.  I have essentially lost the ability to use it in any meaningful way (the phone features work rarely, e-mail, not at all).  I took it into Sprint and was told that a hard reset would have to be performed, but that I should backup my contacts and notes via BlackBerry Desktop, prior to doing so.  However, thought the Desktop launches when I connect to my MacBook Air, and the status bar says "Connecting," once it stops saying "Connecting," when I click on the device icon in the upper left, it says "(Not connected)," so I cannot backup or sync the data.
Could you please let me know how to backup my contacts and notes before I have the hard reset done, since I desperately need them?
    Thank you very much!

By the way, while the Desktop software says that the Bold 9650 is "(Not Connected)," it does seem to know it's connected to some kind of BlackBerry device.  The status bar stops saying "Connecting..." and, when I phyiscally disconnect the Bold, the status bar then reads, "Device Disconnected."
    Thanks again!
