Backup External Drive.

Want a relatively inexpensive enclosure to put a spare SATA drive in to serve as backup plus misc. Would probably partition it. I know that I could put it in the Mac Pro to that end but would prefer to have independence of Power Supply and motherboard etc. The 1TB inside the MacPro is also more than I need there.
The drive is a Western Digital Caviar (green) model '' WD10EACS". That is a 1Tb drive that I took out of a WD MyBook World which can't easily deal with Mac files per NAS.
Thing is the enclosures I can get here in UK (Pluscom and Dynamode USB-HD 3.5-ESF) wont run a 1TB drive. Dynamode are clear firmware won't allow it, Pluscom give contradictory answers.
Would like to have used the Dynmode as it has a good set of interfaces FW and USB. Do not particularly want to set up external eSATA connection aside from cost. I would like to be able to use the Caviar which at present is a 'White Elephant". Any ideas?

Sorry for delay in settling the query and thanks to Pullman. Dictated by availability in the UK I bought: Macpower Pleiades Super s Combo. It was £76 in total and has inputs for , e sata, USB2, Fw 800. It works. The major problem was shoehorning the Caviar Green into the enclosure whilst preserving the flexible mounting that came from the WD NAS enclosure. That needed something other than elegant precision work. The mounting screws for the Pleiades internal box were in danger of touching circuitry on the drive and had to be filed and pressure/electrical insulation (I used circuit board)put between circuitry and screws. Also had to do some filing inside the inner case. The outer case I discovered had a 'fatter' end allowing easier entry of inner case.
This enclosure is sold in the USA under another brand name. It has an Oxford 924DSB chipset and looks like a minature version of the Mac Po it backs up. It is now partitioned into three approx 300GB partitions, one for the clone bkps from Super Duper (which is slow !) two so far spare and a small Fat32 partition for windows type files.

How did you use this backup drive? Was this a Time Machine backup, or just an external drive to which you copied files?
I assume your photos were in iPhoto.  If you're just talking a bunch of JPEG files you can just drag them wherever you like, otherwise:

  • Can I have two Time Machine backup external drives on one Mac?

I have been using Time Machine for over a year and like it very much. The thought occurred to me that I should buy a new external drive that I can backup to and store at a remote location. I plan on making a backup each week, then taking this new drive to my office. That way, if my house ever burns down, I have a backup at my office too that will be a fairly recent backup.
When I unplugged my older external drive and tried to launch a backup using the new one, my Mac said it couldn't find my Time Machine drive. Won't it let me backup to two different drives? Or does it always need to backup to the same one?
    Thanks!

Yes. All you have to do is tell it you've changed destinations, via +Time Machine Preferences > Select Disk.+ (Use different names for the drives, so you know which one is which.)
Try not to go too long between "swaps," though. After several days, especially if there's been a large volume of changes, Time Machine might do a new, full backup, instead of an incremental one.
However, I've learned over the years (mostly the hard way, of course ), never to trust my backups to a single app or piece of hardware: no app is perfect, and all hardware fails, sooner or later.
Like many here, I keep both full Time Machine backups, plus a "bootable clone" on a separate external HD. I use CarbonCopyCloner, many use the similar SuperDuper. That gives me the best of both types of backups, plus of course a completely separate, independent backup.
CCC is donationware; SD has a free version, but you need the paid one (about $30) to do updates instead of full replacements, or scheduling. Either is easily found via Google.
And/or, see Kappy's post on Basic Backup, complete with links to the web sites of each product.

  • Backup External Drive- Your Thoughts?

I want to get an external drive to backup the two 120 GB internal drives in my G4. I'm looking at a Seagate 300GB USB2/FW drive with their BounceBack software. Any thoughts on this setup? I am planning on getting a Quad soon, so I'll want to use the drive to eventually be a backup for the new computer. Any other suggestions welcome.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Mike,
I'd skip the USB2 option and get a Firewire, the interface may be older but you can boot from it and it's more reliable. I know you mentioned a dual connection (of both) but if it saves you money to get just one, Firewire is still "it".
A 300Gb drive is a good size for backups to be had. I'm not familiar with Seagate's backup software but I'd use Carbon Copy Cloner to make bootable "clones" of your HDD.
    Good luck shopping, it's fun...
BTW, why would you ever want a Quad? You have a nice Digital Audio G4. It's the best Mac ever in my opinion.

  • HELP!! Software to backup external drive to external drive

    HI,
We're a small video production company and we're using RAID 0 external drives to do our editing on (for speed). I need to back this work up (ASAP!). I'd like to back the work up onto another external drive (SATA II drives), but it is difficult to do this daily if I don't have some software which will know what folders have been changed and what the new work is.
Is there anything out there that can do this (free ware would be good-but not essential)?
I'm working on a mac book pro and there just isn't enough space on it to use it to edit on, otherwise I would use the timemachine to backup to external drive.
    Hope you can help!!!

    Let me chime in again:
    - for an OS X only solution, you can use Apple Disk Utility System Restore to copy one volume to another volume. Built-in to OS X, no other software needed. Only downside is that it is always a complete copy each time it is performed. So if updating a previously made backup, all the files and folders will be copied again.
    - when using SilverKeeper and you have issues or problems, I suggest you send an email to [email protected] I can assure you that you will get a detailed answer since I answer all those emails. It too will make volume backups for directly connected drives. There are limitations when using shared drives over a network. SilverKeeper will make a backup by copying all the files and folders the first time it is used; subsequent backups will update only the new or changed files.
    - CCC is also a good solution for making volume backups for any connected drive.
    - SuperDuper is also a good solution. The free version will make volume backups; the paid version will perform a smart backup when updating previously made backups. The smart update feature will update the new or changed files.
There are many, many soulitons out there that work quite well. When someone has a problem where a backup cannot be completed it may be due to a problem woth the Source drive - if there are read errors, or disk corruption, a backup may not be successful.
Finally, when making a backup, it is wise to not be using any of the files on the Source or Destination drive. This will surely lead to a problem with a backup, as open files cannot be backed up. If making a backup of your system drive, it also is wise to not be using your computer and make sure other applications are closed so no files are in use.

  • How can Time Machine be configured to backup external drives?

I was running out of space on my Mac internal hard drive.  I bought an external drive and moved all of the iTunes data to the external.  It freed up 100 MB on my internal drive.  However, Time Machine isn't backing up the data that I moved to the external drive.
I still want to back up that data.  How do I configure Time Machine to backup both my internal Mac drive as well as the external drive, which is seperate from my backup drive?
    Thanks.

External drives are automatically added to the list of items excluded from Time Machine backups. To remove the exclusion, open the Time Machine preference pane, click the lock icon to unlock it if necessary, and then click Options.

  • Backup External Drive w/ Time Machine on Yosemite

    Hi there –
I'd like to backup an external hard drive connected to my Mac Mini. I have two of the exact same external hard drives connected and I'm hoping that Time Machine can transport the contents of one of the drives to the other but I cannot remove the source drive from the exclusion list in Time Machine's options.
After doing some research, it looks like this has been possible to do in the past and I'm wondering if there's another way to do it with Yosemite.
    Thanks for any help!

Connect both external drives directly to the computer. Clone one drive to the other:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
      1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
      5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
          the Source entry field.
      6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the empty drive. Source means the drive you want copied.

  • How can i backup external drive iphoto files with Time Machine?

I just can't figure out how to be sure my external drive is being backed up to Time Machine external Seagate HD, the most important files being some 24,000 family photos. Help!  The forums I have tried seem to keep missing the point with the question.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
    Sounds like it may be.
Disconnect and power it off and for several minutes, then Restart your Mac, reconnect and power it up.
See if you can repair it per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
If it doesn't show up in the Disk Utility sidebar, it's likely failed. LaCie might be able to tell you whether it's the drive itself or the power supply, but after 3 years, you're likely to need a new one.

  • Does TM backup external drives?

I have an external 30GB USB2/Firewire drive that I store my work files on. I also have an external USB2 200GB drive that is set up for TM only.
The 30GB external drive does not get backed up when is is connected via Firewire.
Can TM back up an external drive? If so, how?

"Open the TM preference pane and click on the Change Disk button. All the drives listed can be backed up by TM unless you put it in the Excluded list (access through the Options button.)"
Drive is visible in the TM prefs pane and is not on the excluded list.
But it is not being backed up by TM.
Going back in TM and the drive is greyed out and not selectable.
How do I get it on the back up list?
What I think I noticed was that when this drive was connected as a USB2, it was backed up. However, now that I am using the Firewire connection it is not.

  • Time Machine Backups external drive developed problem which the disk repair utility cannot fix, so suggested reformat. I can't reformat because the "Resource Busy". How can I reformat this drive?

My Western Digital external hard drive which I use as a Time Machine Backup stopped working. I tried repairing the disk using the Disk Utility program, but got the message that the utility can't repair the disk and to erase and reformat the disk. When I try that, I get the message the operation can't be completed because "Resource Busy", even though Time Machine is turned off. Any suggestions for repairing the drive/disk?
    Thank you.

  • Does it create a problem if I only connect the backup external drive every few days for use with Time Machine?  Should I have purchased Time Capsule instead?

After a near miss with my 4-year old MacBook, I finally wised up and purchased a WD My Passport for Mac to back up my hard drive. I connected the Passport today and have performed the first full backup.  However, I do not wish to keep it permanently connected to the laptop.  Does this create a problem if I only connect the drive every few days?  Should I have purchased Time Capsule instead?

    Hello,
I don't think it'll cause a problem, but I'd disable/turn off Time Machine before disconnecting, then turn it back on after you connect it again.

After editing images in Aperture, I want to overwrite the new editing to a backup external drive.  Is there an easy way to "add" the new work without the  long process of backing up the whole library.

But the Library is not a program.  I use SuperDuper, and it is smart enough to treat Finder Packages (such as the Library) as a whole bunch of files and folders, and overwrites only those that have changed.  Can't CCC be set up the same way?
