Backup failed as media is write-protected

Hi,
I am having mds 9000 series ds-c9124-k9 switch. To this switch IBM server and tape Library is connected through fiber cables. When we try to take backup an error message is displayed which says "Media is Write-Protected". I can see the tape library but write is not happening on it. When I remove the switch from the middle and connect server and tape library directly the backup starts taking place.
Is it anything to do with the switch?
Is there anything in the switch that I need to enable for the backup to take place?

Hi,
If the zone has the read-only attribute enabled, then disable it.
Regards,
David

  • Windows 7 Backup and Restore error code 0x80070013 The media is write protected

I have had a problem using Windows 7 64-bit Backup and Restore on two different brand new PCs. After setting up a backup to a WD MyBook 500GB external USB hard drive and performing the initial backup succesfully, when it tries to do another backup I am
getting a "The media is write protected, (error code 0x80070013) " error. I have even tried to reformat the external drive with no luck in solving the problem. In doing some web searching I did come across someone with a similar problem running a Windows 7
beta last year that appeared to have be fixed by an beta update. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

    Hi,
    Please try this:
    1)
Click Start and type: diskmgmt.msc in Start Search box.
    2)
Open Disk Management, right click on the external hard disk.
    3)
    Click Properties and click Policies.
    4)
    Check “Better performance”.
    5)
    Click OK.
    Then backup again.

When I tried to backup my files, I recieved an error

  • Windows Server 2012 Windows Backup failed with following error code '0x8078006B' (Windows Backup failed to create the shared protection point on the source volumes.).

The Volume Shadow Copy service initially was running under the context of System, so we thought that ‘System’ doesn’t have permissions to access network shares.
When the Volume Shadow Copy service was running under the context of System, this was the error logged:
“failed with following error code '0x8078014B' (There was a failure in creating a directory on the backup storage location.).”
Which is likely due to not having permissions to write to the network location.
This is a scheduled backup trying to write to a network location, so we changes the service to run under the context of an account that does have permissions to write to the network share.
Then the error changed to this:
“failed with following error code '0x8078006B' (Windows Backup failed to create the shared protection point on the source volumes.).”

We aren’t really seeing anything that gives any hint on what the issue is.
    Any ideas?  Thanks in advance!

We are trying to back up folders/files from 2 local drives (C: & D:), both of which have only 10% space used, and 100 GB free.
We are attempting to back the files up to a Remote Shared File (and there is 100+ GB free space out there).
If we try another network location, we receive the exact same error.
This is Windows Server 2012, not running Hyper-V and is a physical server not a VM.
    Thank you for the link.

  • Disk unable to intialize - Media is write protected

    Dear community,
My WD external harddrive has suddenly stopped working after coming from Europe. I plugged in the HD into my laptop and I noticed that it does not show up under My Computer, only under Safely Remove Hardware and Devices. So I searched forums a bit and a couple
have said that I should go to Disk Management and see if my drive is there.
Turns out the HD is listed there, however as 'Disk 1: Unknown 1.379 GB, Not Intialized'. There is no blue bar either, it just says the size of the disk and that it is unallocated (it does not have a Volume letter).
When I start up Disk Management it gives me a notification:
    Initialize Disk
You must initialize a disk before Logical Disk Manager can access it.
    Select Disk:
    Disk 1
Use the following partition style for the selected disks:
    MBR (Master Boot Record)
    GPT (GUID Partition Table)
So I click on MBR and press OK, and it gives me the error 'The media is write protected'.
So I go into the registry under
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > System > CurrentControlSet > Control > StorageDevicePolicies
and change the value in 'writeprotect' to 0, and then I reboot my computer. Same error.
I can't even reformat the disk because I cannot find such option, not that I want to really, because I have 1.2 TB worth of data on there that I want to keep so losing the information on this Drive will be quite.... frustrating.
    Any help is appreciated.

Thanks a lot for your advice & effort. The same message "Diskpart failed to clear disk attributes".
Here is the file of $vds$.log (only a last part of the file). How can I attached the file, I can't find your email add.  thanks again.

  • Error 8004230f and 2155348075 "Windows Backup failed to create the shared protection point on the source volumes."

    Hello,
When I try to run a system state backup with this command: wbadmin start systemstatebackup -backuptarget:<drive letter>
    I get the error
"Failed to create the shared protection point on the source volumes.
ERROR - Volume Shadow Copy Service operation error (0x8004230f)
The shadow copy provider had an unexpected error while trying to process the specified operation."
I'm not sure how to fix this. I'm logged into the machine as an Administrator.
    Windows Server Enterprise 2008 SP2 64-bit
    Any suggestions??

After I re-registered the dll, I'm still getting the same error in the command window. The DLL registers successfully and the "MS Software Shadow Copy Provider" starts fine.

  • System Image Backup failing when trying to write to a Drobo 5N NAS

I'm trying to make a full system image through file history, and I get part way through the process until I get the following error:
    The backup failed.
There was a failure in preparing the backup image of one of the volumes in the backup set. (0x807800C5)
    Additional information:
The process cannot access the file because another process has locked a portion of the file. (0x80070021)
I've found one other thread where this was an issue and the user said that he had no issues doing it to a USB drive, so I'm assuming it's related to using a network one. I can run file history/recovery (whatever it's called) to the same network attached
server in the same parent folder so I know it's not a permission issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
In order to know whethr this issue is related with the speicfic NAS, I suggest you try to backup the image to another external drive and check if the error persists.
Actually, according to the error message, it seems more related with the files which need to be backed up, it is locked\unaccessable. I recommend you temporarily turn off any anti-virus program protection. Stop other running processes including background
processes, then try to backup again, test the result.

    Hi,
in my case, I didn't have "System Writer" shown in the Writers list. I tried everything to put it up and running, but without any luck. I even tried re-registering writers, which was a bit risky, but that didn't help either.
Then I have found this hotfix, installed it, and it worked after it.
Anyway, you can find here on technet few topics about this particular issue. For the others, something else worked. Please, take a look:

You can try all of this (I did), but this hotfix saved my day in the end.
    Hope this helps.

The drive does not show up under windows explorer. Under Disk Management, the drive shows up as Not Initialized and Unallocated. When I try to initialize the drive I get "The media is write protected" Restarted the PC and also the external hard drive and the same thing.
I am running Windows 7 Professional 32 bit.

You need to be an admin and also go to Control Panel --> User Accounts and turn off UAC for your account.  You can set the level back later.
When in Disk Management, did you right mouse click on the new drive and select initialize?

  • E72 deleting backup.arc which is write protected

    Hi,
I have an E72 where i backed up phone memory onto memory card. It is saved as backup.arc and can be seen when in PC suite, but now I cannot delete this because it says it is 'write-protected'............................... The size is 175mb, which is alarming.
I am unable do any 'slider thingy' because it is a micro sd card with no adapter. Seriously, it is very very plain!
I do not want to reformat it because i do not want to lose any Ovi maps and frankly, E72 has a LOT of software problems, I do not want to risk it (i set up a ringtone which also caused the inability to ever change it.... unless I saved a song as something...transfered it elsewhere...save it again etc etc, point is I am aware how nasty it gets, so, no formatting advice unless you guarantee there'll be no errors!)
    Thanks for reading this through.
    Raima

I did not find any backup.arc when I opened it up as mass storage.
When I use it as Media transfer I do find it.  When I right click.--> properties, the 'write only' part is greyed out...so no amount of clicking will unclick it.
Can you tell me if I save the necessary files somewhere in my PC, (ie: save everything except this backup.arc in a new folder in my computer) and format the memory card (something I previously was reluctant to do) will that get rid of it? Or will it stay stuck///cause errors?
PS: how will I format the memory card anyway?
    Thanks for your previous reply

  • When I try to use the internal hard drive as a scratch disk I get this error "unable to set scratch disk- the selected directory is on write protect or non-writable media.  Any ideas on how to fix this.  It only happens in fcp.

By internal, I assume you're referring to your systems (boot) drive. Is it, by chance, a partitioned dive?
Also…although many people successfully use their systems drives as scratch disks, over time you'll have better results using a dedicated drive for your media.
    Good luck.

  • How to mount any optical media as read-only write-protected?

      Hello,
    I am having trouble trying to mount a cd-r as read-only write-protected
So Far, I've tried this command in Terminal:
    mount -t iso9660 -ro -o /LinkFolder /Volumes/CDMountSource
    I've received this error message:
    No such file or directory
What am I doing wrong, and how can I resolve this issue?
    JohnDB3975

Kappy's right - CD-Rs are read-only by their very nature - they are either blank (in which case there's no point mounting it), or they contain data (in which case you can't write to the disk).
In addition, though, the reason why your command fails is that mount needs to know the device that you want to mount. This, by definition, will never be anything in /Volumes/ since anything there has already been mounted.
Instead it requires something like /dev2/disk2 or some such (the exact device ID will change depending on how many other disks/devices you have attached. You can use System Information.app (or maybe System Profiler in 10.6.x) to find connected devices and their device ID.
