Backup failed - Bulk setting Spotlight attribute failed - Ideas?

I just upgraded from 10.4.? to 10.5.4 primarily to use TM. This has been a disaster. I have never had this much trouble with an upgrade since the Mac Plus.
Before the backup fails I get 200+ console messages like:
/System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[294] Bulk setting Spotlight attributes failed.
What does this mean and how can I fix the problem?
From other posts, it seems that Spotlight and TM have some type of incompatibility, particularly on the first full backup. Spotlight indexing seems to create a problem for TM. I have yet to perform a successful backup.
How do I temporarily turn Off Spotlight other than editing the hostconfig file? Should I include both my Backup Drive and my Boot drive in the Spotlight exclusion list, until I can get a successful backup?

Yes,
Before the backup I placed the TM Backup drive in the "Privacy" section of the Spotlight preferences. That did not seem to have an effect.
The bad news is that at least for now, I am using the backup drive to hold data as well. By placing the drive in the Privacy section, I no longer can easily search the contents.

  • A 30GB incremental backup ("Bulk setting Spotlight attributes failed")

    Greetings all
I have TM set only to back up my home account which lives on a separate hard drive. This is the only drive backed up by TM (the system drive is cloned using SuperDuper instead). The total size of the home account drive is 190GB.
All day today, I have been working with images, creating roughly 1.5GB of new data. And TM has dutifully backed up this new data in a few incremental backups.
This evening TM suddenly backed up 30GB of data, 9722 files, from the home account drive. I haven't touched anything on this drive, except my image folders.
Is there any way to find out more precisely what was backed up so I can remove the duplicates from within TM?
I've scoured Console and the TM Buddy widget for info on what was copied but can't find anything.
I have looked in the backups.backupdb folder. The relevant folder with the time stamp of the big backup is listed in the Get info window as 4.5GB. Some other backup folders are listed as 180-190GB.
    One thing to note:
The culprit incremental backup left 8 *"Bulk setting Spotlight attributes failed"* messages in the log. I have never seen these before. Of course, TM is excluded from Spotlight and has been so for a long time.
I'm not running any virtualisation, Entourage or such. I haven't made any hardware changes recently.
    Thanks for any insight.
    /p

You might want to download the TimeTracker app, from www.charlessoft.com.
It shows most of the files saved by TM for each backup (excluding some hidden/system files, etc.).
Thanks Pondini. TimeTracker is very helpful. It shows that what was backed up was just under half of my iTunes library. There's no rhyme or reason as to why the music of certain artists was backed up.
I can only think this has to do with is the installation of iTunes update 8.1 which happened a few days prior to the big backup. I can't remember if I've used iTunes since. Maybe that made some change to the iTunes library so TM thinks certain music is new?
That appears to be Spotlight and TM falling over each other. Try excluding your TM disk from Spotlight (System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy).
Actually TM is always excluded from Spotlight. In fact, I remember verifying this before I cloned my system onto an external drive prior to installing the iTunes and Frontrow updates.
I might simply start all over with TM.
This reminds me of some thoughts on backup strategy I've had recently. Basically, I've been toying with the idea of using only one folder, for instance the Desktop, as the "active" folder into which I would put stuff I'm working on, which is mainly images and documents. TM could be set only to back up this folder in order to protect against accidental deletions.
Once I'm done with a file, I would move it to the final archive area. Rather than using TM for that archive, I would be using SuperDuper's schedule function.

  • Time machine Bulk setting Spotlight attributes failed

    Hi,
I'm having big, ongoing problems with a customers iMac, 10.6.7, when trying to use Time Machine.
All i want to do now is start afresh.  And want to make sure i clear out everything.  It's no longer the priority to find out what is the cause.
Here's the setup, and what i plan to do.  If i miss anything, please point out.
    the setup:
iMac, connected via ethernet, to a Ethernet over Power plug (Airport switched off on iMac)
EoP plug then connected to Time Capsule, which is in turn connected to the modem
Internet connection is fine / other mac connected direct to TC backs up fine.
Mac with the problem (unfortunately i only get the info second hand, after i've visited):
TM Sys Pref Pane reports No errors, just that the last completed back up was 7th June
When TM goes through process, it reports 'Preparing xxxxxxxxx items'
Then takes forever to back up a reported 40GBs, reports something like '4KB completed', then '225MB completed, then back to 10KB completed...', then 'Calculating Changes...'
There's never any error message, still reports last back up to be 7th of June.  Finally installed backup buddy widget and got the 'bulk setting Spotlight attributes failed' and "Stopping back up to allow ejection of back up destination disk".
    Things tried:
repairing sparceimage of back in disk utility
deleting prefs for TM in /Library/prefs
Tried forcing new back up (without deleting the old one) by renaming the sparcebundle to '...old.sparcebundle' - it carried on trying to back up to the old one, as indicated by the Date Modified in the Get Info window, and lack of new .sparcebundle on TC.
What i plan to do, to thoroughly reset Time Machine, when i visit (I won't have time /opportunity to hang around, wait for anything.  I just do this sequence of events, then i have to leave, not by choice.  So it's important i get it right, do a thorough reset.):
Switch off TM on problematic iMac
Delete the .sparcebundle for the problematic iMac from the TC
    Delete /Library/Prefs/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist on problematic iMac
Rebuild spotlight index cache: sudo mdutil -E
    Shutdown
Unplug EoP plugs for 30 seconds / replace ethernet cables
    Restart iMac
Turn on TM, set up to backup to TC
Now, surely, this is starting totally afresh.  It is assumed the TC is ok, because another iMac directly connected backs up, no problem, and the SMART status of the TC drive is not reporting problems.
If i'm missing anything, any comments, or just reassurance, would love to hear comments.  This has been quite traumatic!  And is dragging on way too long, and made more difficult by the fact i can only visit in short time frames, and the results take so long to come through.
    Many thanks,
    C

Ah, ok,  this would be system.log, and then filter 'backupd' ?
Yup.  And when you find a problem, it might be worth noting the time, removing the filter, and see if there are other messages at about the same time that might be contributing to the problem.
But as it's going via Ethernet-over-Power plugs, which are 200mbps, excuse my patchy knowledge, but would this account for slowness?  Speed isn't a priority, i mean, just as long as everything got backed up.
Of course -- they're getting 10% of the speed.  Earlier you posted "I know Time Machine generally takes ages to do the first backup, but is there any reason why it should take 20 minuites+ to make the backup disk available?"  20 minutes is certainly a long time, but if they're only getting 10% of the speed they should, that's gotta be a big part of it.
The thing is, the internet access is fine, and this customer has offline backups with carbonite.
If they're trying to do backups and any serious internet access over the same "pipe," it's gonna be very slow. Depending on what they're doing, they may not notice how slow response time is.
The external disk isn't an option.  i mean, he has the TC, he wants that to work.  Which is fair enough.
    Even if it's like molasses?
Can you even temporarily connect the iMac directly to the TC via Ethernet?  If so, see how much faster it is.
I don't see the point of the TC.  Is it being used wirelessly for anything at all?
Since everything's connected by cable anyway, why not plug an external HD into the iMac?
    From your first post:
When TM goes through process, it reports 'Preparing xxxxxxxxx items'
Then takes forever to back up a reported 40GBs, reports something like '4KB completed', then '225MB completed, then back to 10KB completed...', then 'Calculating Changes...'
That sounds like TM is simply making two "passes," which is common.  If additional changes are made while it's doing the first one, it will make a second pass to catch up what's ordinarily small and quickly backed-up.  You'll see that in the logs.
But the network or whatever problem is preventing a completed backup; so on each backup, TM isn't sure it got everything the last time (you'll see a UUID message).  Because of that, it will do a "deep traversal," with a message, comparing everything on the Mac to the most recent completed backup, to figure out what's changed and needs to be backed-up.  With an excruciatingly slow connection, that's going to take forever.  And that will be repeated on each backup attempt until one completes normally.

  • Powershell - Bulk Set-ADUser attributes via a CSV file

I am attempting to do a Bulk replace of AD User account attributes via a CSV file.  Each line in this script works except the part of Set-ADUser where I enter -Replace $attribs. I'm not sure how to code this
    part.
    <#
The .csv file should have the following headers (first line)
    GroupName,Status,Approver1,Approver2,Owner
    #>
    #Import CSV
    $csv = @()
    $csv = Import-Csv -Path "C:\TempAdd_Grp_Attrib.csv"
#Loop through all items in the CSV
    ForEach ($item In $csv)
    $gname = $item.GroupName
    $attribs = @{'extensionAttribute2'=$item.Status; 'extensionAttribute3'=$item.Approver1; 'extensionAttribute4'=$item.Approver2; 'managedBy'=$item.Owner}
    Set-ADGroup -Identity $gname #-Replace $attribs

Yes. I am attempting to update the AD Group extension attributes.
The code below works, but I know I can streamline this if I use the INSTANCE, which I am having an issue with (Set-ADGroup -Instance $Update)
    Import-Module ActiveDirectory
    <#
The .csv file should have the following headers (first line)
    GroupName,Status,Approver1,Approver2,Owner

    #Import CSV
    $date = get-date -Format "MMddyyyymm"

    $csv = Import-Csv -Path "C:\Temp\Add_Grp_Attrib2.csv"
#Loop through all items in the CSV
    ForEach ($item In $csv)
    $Update=(Get-ADGroup $item.GroupName -Properties extensionAttribute2,extensionAttribute3,extensionAttribute4,ManagedBy);
    $Update."extensionAttribute2"=$item.Status
    $Update."extensionAttribute3"=$item.Approver1
    $Update."extensionAttribute4"=$item.Approver2
    # Set-ADGroup -instance $Update

  • Time Machine Backup Failed - Copy stage failed with error:11

My TM backups started to fail on a Mac Book Pro running 10.5.8 a few weeks ago with the 'Copy stage failed with error:11' message. It seemed to happen after coming out of hibernation from clamshelling the laptop.
This happened a few times before when I had initially set TM up so to 'fix' it I just blew away the TM backups and started fresh. I would rather not do that this time as I have accumulated 3 months worth of backups.
My TM is on a samba share, I've searched a bit and followed a guide:
    http://blog.robberthamburg.nl/mac-osx-leopard-repair-a-time-machine-error-11-pro blem
to try and fix the problem by deleting a .inProgress backup but this has not helped. unfortunately this has did not fix it. I had also read that there are sometimes problems with TM and Spotlight indexing so I have turned spotlight off completely. Still no luck.

These can usually be stopped by excluding the backups from any anti-virus scanning, and Spotlight indexing, at least on supported volumes. Unless you're sure you have Spotlight off entirely, try excluding your backups via System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy.

Both of these appear to indicate problems on your backup drive, perhaps directory problems. For a supported one, a +*Repair Disk+* (not permissions) will often fix it. If there's a way to run that on your backups, it's worth a try.
It's also possible there's a problem on your internal HD, so it's worth doing a +*Verify Disk+* (not permissions) on it, too, via Disk Utility. If that shows errors, you'll have to boot from your Install disc and use it's copy of DU to repair them.

My Time Machine for my iMac has suddenly developed a problem: on repeated attempts to do a backup, it returns the message that the backup failed because the volume is already in use.  The solution to the problem may well be simple and obvious, but it'll be a revelation to me and any help will be gratelfully received.

Everytime I go to turn on my iCloud backup I get "iCloud Backup Failed"  what to do

    Gail from Maine,
Thank you so much in your continued efforts to help me out. Much appreciated.
    Here is what I see..
Can't select the backup =  I go to Settings>iCloud>Backup (shows off).  I select > Backup(off)> and see iCloud Backup grayed out (not selectable).
I have plenty of storage available: Settings>iCloud>Storage shows 195GB Available
When I select: Settings>iCloud>Storage>Manage Storage>  My iPhone does not show up under the backup list. I use this iPhone with iTunes (if that matters).
When I select: Settings>iCloud>Photos(On)> iCloud Photo Library (Beta) is selected on and shows "Uploading 1,131 items".  But does not start upload and the message always remains the same.  Tried shutting the Photo Library (Beta) on an off and no change. Also tried it after the reset and sow no difference.
On that same Settings>iCloud>Photos page there is a selection Upload to My Photo Stream.  Prior to installing iOS 8, pictures I took with my phone would automatically copy over to the photo stream on the other 3 devices on my account when in the presence of WiFi.  The other 3 still do it and are all running iOS 8.  This iPhone stopped doing it after the iOS 8 Update and installation of iCloud. It was working before on iOS 7.
The only different app that this iPhone has is a WirWatch, which is used to receive pushed e-mails from work onto my computer. This App was there when I was running iOS 7.  Don't know if it could be the reason. But none of the other devises have this feature.
    Thanks,
    Dan R.

  • Recent backups fail: "An error occurred while copying files to the volume."

I recently moved to a new place and set up Time Capsule as a bridge. Backups were working fine for the first couple days but then, out of the blue, I got a message that said the password I entered for Time Capsule was incorrect. I entered the correct password and hit OK. Time Machine was able to connect but now backups fail with this error: "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume."
Time Machine indicates it is "preparing backup" for a few minutes, then sits at "zero of __MB completed" for a long while, finally starts backing up and gets to the end but then fails. Console indicates "unexpected reply from backup server; ignored."
None of these attempts have fixes my problem:
--I have deleted my TC passwords in Keychain Access.
--I have tried downloading the latest Airport Utility and re-entering the TC disk's password in both Airport Utility and in Time Machine preferences.
--I have restarted my computer and unplugged & plugged back in TC.
My Internet connection works fine; TC's light is solid green. I can enter Time Machine to restore backups without a problem. The backups just fail every time now. Any ideas?

The problem really isn't the speed of the backup; it's done in 5-10 minutes, but each time it finishes, TM reports it has failed. I don't believe plugging it in overnight or letting TM try over and over will fix the problem. I've tried to manually start backups a number of times, and have let TM try to start and complete them on its own but they consistently fail.
It would be an awful shame if I had to delete my old backup--I bought the Time Capsule for the specific purpose of having backups that go back months and I don't want to lose what I've already backed up.

  • Time Machine Backups Failing w/ Error: (-36) SrcErr:YES

    Machine History:
    2008 iMac
    2.8 GHz Core 2 Duo
    4 GB of 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    Version 10.7.5 OSX
External G-Drive 500 GB HD connected via Firewire.
Late yesterday my iMac started acting crazy.  On reboot the machine did not come back up and was hung up on the Apple Logo.  The circular progress meter was spinning and the system would not boot into the OS.  At this point I started the system with the command key and R to get to the ulitlity menu.  At this point I initiated a full system restore back to a backup dated June 10th 2013.  The restore ran clean with no errors and the system came back up.  At this point I wiped out my G-Drive so that I could take a full backup of the system.  I partitioned the G-Drive 400 GB for Time Machine and 100 GB to manually backup photos and other files.  I created the partition and manually backup family photos since it seems that at times I've added photos into iPhoto and they don't get added into the backup sets.
At this point I noticed that the Spotlight Indexing job was running in the background.  The same time the Time Machine Full backup was running and initated and I'm not sure what happend.  I recieved a generic error stating that the backup could not be completed at this time.  Backups to disk will not run and recieve the same error.  It appears that there are a ton of files on my mac HD that have this Error: (-36) SrcErr:YES error.  I've tried a few things:
Using Terminal to mv or cp the files locally on the mac HD.  This fails with I/O Errors
Using Terminal to mv or cp the files to the backup HD connected via FireWire.  That fails with I/O Errors.
I've confirmed that the files are readable by the application.  iMovie in this case.  I was able to play the video content.  So I belive that the files are in fact ok and good.
I've manually ran a full reindexing of spotlight.  I suspected that the indexing was out of sync and that Time Machine was having a hard time with the metadata.
I've also confirmed that JPG file had this error in the /var/logs/system.log.  I was able to open the JPG with preview and iPhoto with no issues.  But, I can not copy or move the file to any locations on either the HD or the Backup HD.
Permissions on the files are rw-r-r.  In another case I changed them to rw-rw-rw and that still did not make a difference as I would have expected.
My fear is that my Mac HD is getting ready to take a DUMP literally.  Most of the stuff on the machine I don't care about however I do care about the family photo's and videos.  To this point I've been able to manually backup my photos to the external disk.  I have not yet backed up my videos.  Starting to get stressed about that.  I was about to take the PC in to Apple Care at the local store but wanted to disucss here as well.  Any help would be appreciated.

This is done.  I went into the Apple store and they had me run SMART Untiliy on my machine.  There are a ton of bad sectors on my HD.  Time for a new disk.

  • Time Machine Backup Failed: Error (12): Link of previous volume failed

I am having troubles with Time Machine, backing up to a new Time Capsule, after I have switched one of the drives being backed up. I replaced a 250 GB external drive with a 500 GB drive, but have given it the same name (otherwise lots of links break). Now I get the following error everytime Time Machine runs:
Error (12): Link of previous volume failed for Athena Disk 2
Where 'Athena Disk 2' is an external USB drive being backed up, which was swapped with a new drive.
Disk Utility reports the drive is clean. I've seen a few other references to similar problems in the forum, but no solution. Console reports that the first (internal non-switched) drive has a bunch of files being backed up, but it seems to abort when it tries to backup the drive that was switched.
I've tried disabling backups, removing the Time Capsule disk and then setting it up again, in an attempt to 'reset' something, but to no avail.
Any ideas? I'm guessing there is a filesystem ID or something similar that Time Machine is using, and it notices that something has changed, but doesn't know what to do about it.
    Thanks,
    Dave Filip.

I'm having a similar problem, which seemed to start coincident with either a 10.5.6 update OR the replacement of my internal drive with a larger drive (I don't remember which...).
Time Machine backup logs now start similar to this one:
2/9/09 9:30:03 AM /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[35512] Backup requested due to disk attach
    2/9/09 9:30:03 AM /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[35512] Starting standard backup

2/9/09 9:30:23 AM /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[35512] Backup requested due to disk attach
All of this seems right except for that business about UUIDs, but then we get this:

which leaves me with a few questions:
    a) I don't have fresh backups, and that leaves my system a bit vulnerable. Can I fix this somehow?
    b) I don't want to have to start over, but if I do how can I salvage the existing backups at least for the next year or so?
    c) What the heck are those "CoreEndianFlipData" errors all about?
    Thanks in advance.

  • ICloud backups failing due to Safari bookmarks DB being locked

iCloud backups are failing to complete on my iPhone 4 (CDMA), iOS 5.0.1.  I successfully completed a backup on November 9, but haven't been able to get a backup to complete since then.  When I manually invoke the "Back Up Now" function, it starts backing up, then says "There was a problem completing the backup.  Please try again later."
Looking in the console logs (below), it appears the problem is that the Safari bookmarks DB is locked (corrupted?).  Indeed, I am unable to add additional bookmarks in Safari, I get the message: "Bookmarks are being synced.  Please add the bookmark once syncing has completed."
I've tried restarting the iPhone to no avail; I've also looked at Apple's iCloud backup troubleshooting doc, and none of the cases there seemed to match this problem.
Any suggestions ar every much appreciated!
Here is what the iPhone console says:

Had same problem, the solution lies with having your original apple ID associated email address "verified".
I may not have all the steps down correctly, but open your apple ID account manager and go to the your listing for email and "verify" the email address.  This association then seems to allow the use of your email address when you are trying to set up this new apple ID that they are requiring for iCloud.
Be aware that this new apple ID has a far reach and apparently cannot be undone, that is you can't change the name, characters, numbers or whatever you have for an email address that becomes your apple ID---even if you can no longer use the email address to receive email.
    Lots of luck.
I have been trying to get the iCloud features to work for over a week now, including a visit to a genius bar, and still not fully functioning.

  • System Image Backup failing when trying to write to a Drobo 5N NAS

I'm trying to make a full system image through file history, and I get part way through the process until I get the following error:
    The backup failed.
There was a failure in preparing the backup image of one of the volumes in the backup set. (0x807800C5)
    Additional information:
The process cannot access the file because another process has locked a portion of the file. (0x80070021)
I've found one other thread where this was an issue and the user said that he had no issues doing it to a USB drive, so I'm assuming it's related to using a network one. I can run file history/recovery (whatever it's called) to the same network attached
server in the same parent folder so I know it's not a permission issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
In order to know whethr this issue is related with the speicfic NAS, I suggest you try to backup the image to another external drive and check if the error persists.
Actually, according to the error message, it seems more related with the files which need to be backed up, it is locked\unaccessable. I recommend you temporarily turn off any anti-virus program protection. Stop other running processes including background
processes, then try to backup again, test the result.

  • Backup fail on Time Machine and My Passport for Mac on Yosemite

Cannot seem to get Time Machine to do a full backup of my NEW My Passport for Mac.
    I've:
    - Updated firmware on WD external drive (and formatted correctly for Apple)
    - Updated to latest IOS 10.10.3 (Yosemite)
    - Verified and repaired Mac HD via iOS Disk Utility and the WD Drive Utility (no issues found on either)
Error message continues to be "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to My Passport for Mac. An error occurred while copying files. The problem may be temporary. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk."
I'm backing up about 250 GB and have done this numerous times on my Passport for Mac. Everything SEEMS to be fine during backup, until after about 2-3 hours, into a 4-hour backup, the error message appears without any error codes.
Does anyone have any input?  I don't think it is on the WD side.  Anyone know if there an issue with Time Machine and this external drive?  Help!
    Thanks,
    Dave

    Hi Linc,
    I hope this helps you.

  • Time Machine backup fails on new Mac

I used Migration Assistant to transfer data from my old Mac Pro G5 to my new Intel Mac Pro. I erased the backup disk (500 GB My Book) then attempted to use Time Macine to backup the new Mac Pro. It won't start on it's daily schedule. When I select "Back up now", the icon in the tool bar indicates it starts to backup but then quickly stops. When I open Time Machine, it says: Backup - Failed. There is no error message so I don't know what else to do. Have any of you had this problem? If so, what did you do to solve it?
    Thanks for any help.

in DU, select the whole drive (model, not name) and click on the partition tab. set the number of partitions to 1 and click on "options". set the partition scheme to GUID there. set the format to mac os extended journaled and click "apply".
once the disk is reformatted go to TM system preferences and set up TM.
