"Backup failed" using Time Capsule

Hello, trying to back up a Macbook using Time Capsule, keep getting the message that backup failed, even when I attach with MB to TB with an Ethernet cable.
Anyone have any idea where I could begin to start looking for a solution?

Hi James,
Have you tried erasing your Time Capsule disk? If it's the initial backup, it could be that you have a corrupt sparsebundle file. Go into AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > Disks and select and erase the internal disk. Then try your backup again using an ethernet cable and see if that works.

What is the resolution to the following error message: "Backup Failed. The backup on "Name Time Capsule" is already in use."
    Time Capsule 2nd Generation;
    Mac Book Pro, late 2013, 2GHz Intel Core i7; 8 GB, 1600Mhz DDR3; OS X 10.9.4

Pull the power cord from the TC.. count to 10 slowly.. plug the power cord back into the TC.. voila.. problem fixed.
BUT a gen2 is getting long in the tooth.. get reach for hardware failure.. and this might be the first signs.

  • Using Time Capsule to backup a small office network

    Hi all,
I am hoping somebody may be able to tell me if this is a good plan or not. I have been really struggling to find a good network backup solution. I've been trying to make a Lacie Ethernet Disc Mini work but have finally given up on that one.
I am trying to find a simple solution to backup a network of 5 macs. 1 is currently plugged straight into my router, another router port extends to switch in another building which has 4 further macs along with other network devices connected. Crucially, there is no wireless access from this building to the router.
Would all macs backup to the Time Capsule, including those that are wired via the switch? If so, at what speed? I have heard suggestions that it can be a very slow process?
I'm not worried about any kind of streaming - purely a good backup device.
    All advice very gratefully received,
    Regards
    Richard

    Hi Richard,
I have a small business and chose to use Time Capsule as a backup for my company's network. We have 12 workstations and use all Macs, some wireless and some not. I'm an experienced Mac sys admin and have setup many networks, including designing and installing the network we currently have, which is driven by a Leopard Server.
Based on a year of experience working with Apple's newest airport extreme and capsule products, I would not use them in business and am moving towards a wireless network hd using Carbon Copy Cloner as my software. This is due in part to numerous calls to Apple for support on these items, having to reset them dozens of times, and being told by Apple support that using these products for business is not recommended.
Carbon Copy Cloner is a great tool for a backup, especially for workstations, as you can create partitions for each computer on your HD and CCC will create *bootable* backups of your HD - a great lifesaver if a computer fails and you don't have time to reinstall everything.
I will be putting the capsule and extreme devices on Craigslist for sale and hope to recoup enough to get the wireless network drive, which my research shows is the best way to get network backup solutions for small business.
    I hope this helps.

  • Can I use Time Capsule like real backup?

I have two macbook airs home (plus ipad and iphone).  Both macbook Airs have relativelly small ssd so most of the data (family photos etc). MUST be kept on File Server. I would like to use Time Capsule as that File Server but Im afraid its just single HD not Raid.
Am I right? It would be fundamental flaw in using of TC as real backup tool.
Or am I the only one who has data which are larger than my ssd in my notebook?
    Thanks much for help!

I dont need "backup" for the situation when I accidently delete a file. :) I need backup for the situation when harddrive collapses. I cant agree with your statement that "A single hard disk is actually pretty reliable item".
Any harddrive fails sooner or later. Thats why I have all data on computer I use in work on raid. If one disk in raid fails the data are still on the second disk in raid. It saved my data two times already.
I want my family data (photos, movies from vacations, etc.) on at least TWO disks. But they are too big to fit in notebooks. So i need to put them on separate file server.
I guees the best will be to get Nas disk for my data. All important data will be on Nas (raid), all emails are on Imap. So actually I dont need to back up any data to TC.
Im wondering who really need to to use TC. If you keep data on Nas its more comfortable and more safe.

I am using a macbook pro with system 10.6.8. I just discovered that no recent files have been backed up to the external disk using Time Capsule.  There is a long list of backups including most recent but no recent files, for some weeks, have been backed up.  I did a full reset of Time Machine.  I disconnected the external drive and reconnected it. It is not a matter of file types, no files and no folders have gotten backed up.  Everything looks normal though unless one goes hunting for recent files on the back up.

    Many thanks.
With those symptoms, I'd try the following document:
Apple software on Windows: May see performance issues and blank iTunes Store
(If there's a SpeedBit LSP showing up in Autoruns, it's usually best to just uninstall your SpeedBit Video Accelerator.)

  • Using time capsule along with offsite backup?

hello, thanks for taking a look at my post.
for my office, we want to use time capsule to backup all of our computers, but are looking to then have that information backed up off-site in case of possible theft/fire/etc. at the office. does time capsule have an option to backup to mobile me?, or any other off-site storage?
if this is not the most ideal backup situation, I would appreciate any other suggestions.
    thanks for your time,
    steve

...does time capsule have an option to backup to mobile me?, or any other off-site storage?
    No for both questions.
Time Capsule itself doesn't do any backups. Time Machine on each individual Mac is actually what performs the backup to the Time Capsule.

  • Using time capsule model A1409 and trying to use it as only backup. Already have Verizon wireless router. Do not know which cable port to use in back of time capsule. And also it is asking for password. Have tried all of mine and it will not work.

Want to us my time capsule model A1409  as only backup. 2 TB hard drive.
Already have Verizon wireless router. Do not want to use Time capsule as router, only back up for iMac.
Do not know which cable port to use in back of time capsule to Ethernet port back of my iMac.
And also it is asking for password for the server John Garland's Time Capsule so Time machine can access it..
Have tried all of passwords can think of and none work.
Held the reset button for one second on back of capsule and do not see if anything happened.
    What a conundrum.
Appreciate any help to get this working.
    Thanks,
    John R

I have a 2TB Timecapsule and really only use it for Time Machine backups. But the Wi-Fi side is used to sync my iPad at times.
    Mine is wiredup thus;
Eth cable from iMac to modem (not the WAN port should you have one),  then eth cable from modem to T/Cap in the WAN port (bottom port with an O sign above it)
I believe when its connected up you may have to set up a wireless network. Follow the instructions to set up Wi-Fi and Network
and then give it a password. The WiFi icon should appear in the menu bar where you can switch it on or off.
Its been sometime since I set it with the help of Apple Techs so I might be a bit rusty.

  • Use time capsule for backup for HP Windows computer?

How can I use Time Capsule for backup on a HP Windwos computer?

Apple does not offer Windows backup software.
A popular PC application used to backup a PC on the Time Capsule is Genie Timeline Pro. You might want to take a look:

  • Can you use time capsule for your mac and have readynas backup your pc's on the same network

Can you use time capsule for your mac and use readynas to back up your pc's on the same network

Sure, that is trivial setup.. they both have different names and IP addresses.
You should be able to use ReadyNas for TM backup but you should check the latest state of play for that.

  • Can I use Time Capsule only as a WiFi backup disk w/out having to configure it as my main router?

Can I use Time Capsule ONLY as a WiFi backup disk w/out having to configure it as my main router with my Internet modem?
Yes, you have two options here, each with advantages and disadvantages.
Option 1...connect the Time Capsule to your AirPort Extreme using an Ethernet cable connection. Turn off the wireless on the Time Capsule since your AirPort Extreme is already providing wireless.
Advantages...easy to configure, you can backup either over wireless or plug directly into one of the Ethernet ports to backup large files 3-5 times faster than wireless.
Disadvantages...none, except it requires a wired Ethernet connection to the AirPort Extreme.
Option 2....configure the Time Capsule as a wireless only hard drive.
Advantage.....you can locate the Time Capsule anywhere you want as long as it can receive a good wireless signal from the AirPort Extreme.
Disadvantages....harder to configure, backups will occur only over wireless.

  • Custom backup using time capsule

Just wondering how I can back up my applications on my laptop using Time Capsule? Can I drag and drop my applications folder into Time Capsule or are there other files buried in the system folder? I don't have all the install discs for all of my programs, they mysteriously disappeared after moving to my new apartment. I'm not referring to preloaded software that came with my macbook because I can use the discs that came with the laptop...I'm referring to photoshop, video converter apps, toast, ect. Thank you in advance for those who reply.

adam, Welcome to the discussion area!
You can drag and drop the applications to the Time Capsule for backup. However many times the licensing information will not be preserved.
A safer bet is to allow Time Machine to backup the applications.

can i use time capsule to backup movies and see them wireless without redirecting my itunes library to the time capsule?

It seems the ability to restore from backup discs was removed along with the ability to create them. You will need to temporarily install an older version of iTunes (e.g. 10.3) to recover the media from those discs.
See Win 7 OS,64 Bit..Going back to ver 10.3 as I wish to use the cdbackup/restore version..I for a previous thread discussing this.

  • I already have a DSL gateway that is a wireless capable and is used as a router to set up my network. Do I have to use time capsule to connect to the internet, or can I use it to join my current network and use it as a backup disk?

Can I use time capsule without setting up internet connection?

Yes, you can connect to your current router using Ethernet (highly recommended) or wirelsss only.
