Backup file password

Hi guys
I backed up my iPhone 3G last year and password-protected the backup file. Unfortunately I cannot remember the password!
I backed it up again last night and now ALL my stuff from the iPhone is gone!
Is there a way of getting Apple / iTunes to email me the password?
Else my only other choice is to set up my iPhone as a new phone on the PC - what will happen to my data if I do that?
I would really appreciate your help.
Many thanks in advance
Kat

To protect you. What's the point of a password if someone will tell you what it is? Anyway, the password is a one-way cipher, meaning that knowing the contents after encryption will not help you determine the original password.
BTW, if a web site offers to send you your password you should not use that site. It means they are storing in in plaintext, where any hacker or employee can get it. A responsible and secure site will issue you a new password after verifying your identity, but they should not be able to tell you what your password was.

Have you encrypted the backups files from your iPad? If so, that is likely the password needed.

I think, according to this thread, you're between a rock and a hard place- you won't be able to access your backups. See this thread:

• What is the backup file password?

I am trying to backup my original iPhone 4 to a file on my Mac, then tried to restore this backup file to my new iPhone 4S and it's asking for a password for the backup file, don't know what this is.

When you first created the back up, if you selected to encrypt the back up it would have asked you to set a password.
Try all your usual passwords that you use.

• Trying restore my phone after the update and it's asking for a backup file password that I don't know. Please help!

After installing the latest update from apple my iPhone 4 will not complete the restore process with out a backup password. I don't recall ever setting up a backup password and there is no help button if you can't find the password. Apparently I'll loose all my data and have to set the phone up as a new phone. This is very frustrating.

• What is my backup file password

anything?

You created the password the first time you backed up after checking "Encrypt iPhone Backup" in iTunes. If you have an Enterprise Exchange email account your IT department could have forced you to have an encrypted backup, but again, you would have been prompted for the password the first time you backed up. If you don't remember that password you cannot restore your backup.

• How do I find the password to unlock iphone backup file?

I upgraded to 5.0 and when trying to restore it asks for the backup file password. What is this? I have tried my apple id password and Itunes password and it doesn't work? I have nothing on my phone right now.

You may have an encrypted backup. If you don't know the password, your data may be lost on that backup.
But, there is another way.
If you have multiple backups, shift-click restore from backup, and I believe you should get a menu listing your backups, I hope this helps you.
You can try certain other backups and such to restore too, they may or may not be encrypted, if they are, then I suppose you're out of luck.
If you find one of your backups that does not have encryption, you're good to go until you remember or retrieve your password.
In this case, is this a lost or stolen iPhone? Counterfeit, brought off eBay, etc?
If so then I cannot help you on that, nobody can.
If you have a passcode lock set on your iPhone, unlock it first (to tell iTunes that you own the phone of course) then disconnect and reconnect if necessary.
But like I said, if it's not your iPhone then we cannot help you. Sorry.

• What is the password for backup files

Just updated my iPhone & lost my contacts & calendar. It is requesting my backup file password; I don't recall setting one. Please help! Is there a way to obtain this?

If you didn't set the password, and it isn't possible to' override or bypass it (there wouldn't be much use in having one if it could), then have you got an Exchange email account on the iPhone ? If so then it's possible that the account administrator has set the password for you (e.g. to protect potentially sensitive work content) - in which case you could try contacting them.

• IPod touch erased when I updated and synced it on a different operating system. Forgot password to backup file. Windows 7 is a bust for the newest version of itunes. Tired of fooling with it, so I tried to update and sync ipod to hubby's laptop.

Sooooooo sick of trying to fix the bug with the newest version of itunes and Windows 7. I'm over it. Tried syncing ipod to hubby's laptop. When update and sync was complete, all my apps, music, and pictures were gone. When I open my itunes account on his computer, they are gone from there as well. I cannot open itunes on my computer because I cannot fix the compatability issue. Don't tell me how to go to 'computer', click 'program files' etc. etc...... Did that, unchecked compatability mode and nothing is fixed. About to take a hammer to darned thing.

Also, I have forgotten the password to my backup file, which could solve everthing. I don't really remember ever setting a password for the backup file. Tried every password I've ever used with this device.

Hi Rakesh,
In Analysis Services, if a backup file is encrypted, you must provide the password specified during backup before you can use that file to restore an Analysis Services database. In this scenario, unless you remember the password, otherwise you have to re-create
a backup file.

• Save iCloud password to backup file?

I am using Apple Configurator to configure many devices in my organization. Currently, after restoring a backup file to a device I need to type in the password for the shared iCloud Account we use for one group of devices. Is there a way to do this automatically without having to touch the device?

As of today, I was able to restore ipads and the accounts (including passwords) were in the iPads. I'm not sure why this is, I just know that it's working that way. It may be important to note that these iPads have had this information in them before. But after noticing this, I reset the iPads to factory settings which should have made that a non-factor. When I restored them to the backup, the passwords were already entered.
I have no idea why this is suddenly happening.

• How does the backup file that I would like to use for restore now require a password

How does the backup file that I would like to use for restore now require a password, when I just Backed it up on 10/30/14

It requires a password to restore from it because at some point, you checked the box in iTunes to use encrypted backups, at which point you were prompted for, and set a password.
If you now can't remember what that was, then you can not restore from that backup.

• ITunes does not recognize password after removal of corrupt backup file

I removed a corrupt backup file of my iPhone 4 from iTunes and now it does not recognize my password anymore. The password is correct, as I wrote it down when I set it up and have used it before. Any thoughts? This must be some kind of flaw in iTunes or iOS for iPhone.
iPhone 4, iOS 6.1.3

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried stopping and restarting Apple Mobile Services, Bonjour and iPod services but it had no effect. The problem still remains - everything works for all 3 iPhones immediately after reinstalling iTunes but none of them can connect with any of the USB cables after a reboot. This problem is still present as of upgrading to 10.6.3.25.
BTW, I do have other choices. I can become disenchanted with the product, use it less and less, then eventually migrate over to some competitor's product.
Cheers,
Chris.
