Backup Finder and Dock settings?

What files do I need to include in my Backup app backup plan, to preserve my finder and dock settings in case of crash?

I found this thread looking for a solution to a Dock issue. Something odd is happening on my Mac Pro—with every restart, my Dock is reduced to a meagre 4 programs and even when I repopulate it with the 15 or so items I like to have in there, they're gone at the next reboot.
I looked for com.apple.dock.db, com.apple.finder.plist, and com.apple.dock.plist in my home/library/preferences folder, none are there. Is there anywhere else they are stored?

  • WHERE ARE "DESKTOP" AND "DOCK" SETTINGS STORED?

I want to backup my desktop and dock settings. Where are they stored so that I can do this?
    Thx.
    Mike

If you are backing up your home folder, you are also backing up your user prefs all of which are stored in "Your User Name"/Library/Preferences. There are several other "Preferences" folders that contain "global" prefs, namely /Library/Preferences and /System/Library/Preferences.
One potential "trap" though... corrupted prefs files are often the cause of anomalous system behavour so saved prefs should be copied back into new folders with caution.

  • Finder and Dock keep crashing

    The story before the problem:
I tried to defrag my MacBook (core2duo) with Techtool Pro and it failed, then MacBook didn't boot in normal or safe mode.
Disk utility reported error but refused to correct it, fsck -fy in single mode didn't help too and failed before finishing the repair process.
I used Disk Warrior 4.1 to repair the hard disk and it did the job pretty good and after repair MacBook could be boot again.
Now another problem happened and keeps occurring.
    The problem:
After finally booting the MacBook I found that I can't use the system because there is no menu bar, dock appears and disappear in just second repeatedly and desktop icons too. (also I noticed that desktop background has been changed to OS X 10.5 default)
So I think that problem is finder crash (that cause also dock crash) that is happening in only 2 seconds again and again and makes the system unusable even for troubleshooting purposes.
What I did before this post (and problem exist yet!):
    1- Safe boot
    2- cmdoption+fo to reset
    3- cmdoption+pr to pvram reset
4- running disk utility from leopard dvd and repaired permissions. (also it reports hdd is ok)
5- made another user and logged in to new user,
surprisingly the new user works just fine and without any problem. (cause I thought it should be a system wide issue)
    6- deleted finder .plist
7- moved the .plist folder of old user (after I found that it wouldn't help it has been returned)
8- reinstalled the 10.5.2 combo update
these steps didn't solve the problem. and yet my old user keeps crashing on finder and the new one is works pretty good.
If there is any way to solve this problem (except OS reinstall or deleting the bad user and transfer to new one) please guide me.
the problem is I really don't want to deal with all the data transfer and customization process again! I have all my data in the old user and yes I can transfer all data and files from there but I will be happy if I can do anything else.
here is the log file I found for these crash:
(not in this regard, but amazingly I noticed that the crash log reports finder version 10.5.3!)

    Thanks mate for your reply.
About the mess Techtool Pro 4.6.1 made, from 1995 until last year that I moved to Mac (by a MacBook) I guess I did defragmentation, in average, every week on 6 different machines with almost every version of microsoft's OS from dos 5 to windows xp sp2, and never ever something like this happened to me! I even don't remember that windows asked me about making backup just for defrag! Isn't it mucking to make a 50GB backup everytime you are going to do a defrag!
and about that Techtool Pro mucking stuff I should say that it is the worst piece of software I have ever seen. this state f the art! program said that there is a minor problem in the HDD and it should fix it before defrag, after I said go ahead it mucked my HDD but said that the minor problem fixed! but refuses to defrag again cause this time it found a major problem and recommended to try another fixing routine in the program and after that I found my HDD totally mucked up! impressive specially for a software that claims to solve problems others can't.
Any way at the end there is some moral lessons in this story!
1-Don't use Techtool Pro to fix your HDD, you can use it on your bad guys computer to muck them up but not on your computer!
2-Always backup, and also backup your backup if possible.
3-Don't ever think that you can do something here because you did it successfully some where else!
Thanks Pal, I will give your advice a try

  • Can't find Finder and Dock and Desktop has disappeared

I was backing up my MBA (OS 10.6.0) today using Superduper and something strange happened.
My hard drive became corrupted and filled with files (105 GB used and 0 GB available). The HDD capacity is 120GB. About 15GB is bootcamp. The backup failed.
I deleted a few files and freed up 200MB when I realized the hard drive had become full (I had 20GB free space on the Macintosh HD before this).
When I checked Disk Utility it told me my hard drive was corrupted and I should repair it using the operating system disc (Snow Leopard) to start up the computer and then go to Disk utility and perform Repairs.
I did all that and Disk Utility told me the hard drive was OK after the repair.
However, when I restart the computer, I get a blue screen. I cannot see the Dock. And Finder cannot be found. When I do Force Quit, there is no Finder in the list.
For some reason even though I do not have a Dock, I was able to get a menu at the top. I don't know what I did to get it. Suddenly I got a message saying I couldn't open iTunes even though I didn't try to open it (the Dock has disappeared). But at least I got some menu at the top.
With the menu I was able to open some items on Recent Items including Firefox.
I went to my email and tried to send some files to the same email address. I was able to browse Finder by doing this and my Desktop seems to be OK. I can open various files by using the browse function in upload files in my email and they all seem OK.
So I know that my Desktop files are intact. I haven't checked them all (I have like 50 files on my desktop) but on a quick look, all the Desktop items appear to be there.
How can I get the Desktop and the Dock back?
How can I get Finder to show up?
I just have a blue screen at the moment.
When I get the Desktop back I want to erase some files and create space.
Somehow the hard drive got filled up when I tried to do a backup using Superduper.

    All resolved.
I attached an external drive to the MBA in an attempt to export Firefox Scrapbook files onto it.
Exporting failed (my fault – I didn't follow the steps correctly) and I ended up having to restart the computer.
Surprisingly the screen opened in bootcamp.
Because there was an external hard drive connected to the computer, I presume this is what prompted the computer to open in bootcamp. Normally I would have to hold down the Option key to open bootcamp but my computer's hard drive had been corrupted so ....
From bootcamp (Windows XP) I restarted the computer, this time holding down the Option key.
I selected the Mac volume as the startup disk.
When it booted, it sputtered a few times and it looked like it was going to open in the blue screen again (I could see the familiar strange things that occur when it opens in the blue screen). However, after a while, it opened with the Desktop screen.
All the icons I had on the Desktop appeared and I had the screen back to normal with Dock and everything there.
I deleted some items (I only had 200MB left) to create some room on the hard drive.
After browsing the web, I came across the reason for why my HD suddenly filled up during the failed back up before things went awry.
    From Pink Mutant
    http://pinkmutant.com/articles/TigerMisc.html
"Failed Backups and the Volumes Folder
Another potential stealer of hard drive space is a failed backup, where the drive the backup was supposed to go to was unavailable, so the backup software simply copied the files into the invisible /Volumes folder. Again, use the Go and Go to Folder menu bar item ....."
This is exactly what happened to me. I found the two volumes, "Untitled" and "Untitled 1" as Pink Mutant said I would in "Go" ("Go to Folder") and I deleted them (I should have backed up my computer before doing this though). Straightaway, 20GB of space came back on my HD.
My computer had copied the backup onto my HD instead of the external HD during the failed backup operation. That's why the internal HD filled up.
So it's a relief that I got the Desktop back again – purely by accident – and I also found what was filling up all the HD space.
So a tip: if someone finds their backup fails for whatever reason, don't try to back up again. Check HD space and if it has suddenly shrunken, go to "Go", and then "Go to Folder", type "/Volumes" and click "Go". That should bring up the offending volumes if any. Move them to Desktop. Check "Get Info" and have a look at the contents if you can (I couldn't). Do a backup of the computer. Then delete the problem volumes (if you find that these volumes are the cause of the problem). You can then delete the same volumes from the backup at this point.

  • Parental control and Dock settings

Please Help : my son's sessions are under parental control but open to set dock preferences and allowed to use System Preferences as far as settings are opened for them.
But anyway, one has Questions marks in place of applications shortcuts, and the other one loose his shortcuts.
Even if we put back the applications shortcuts they want and are allowed of course, we loose evry things after closing and openning the session. Many other settings are no saved also
    Why
Looks like Snow leopard is something that we could call a M... ?????
    Thank for help.

It works well if they are allwed to run the application they choose.
In fact, I don't know the origin of this trouble, but I did trash their dock preferences plist file
and I reshape it their after, and it works well now.
I still have one other problem, which looks like the previous but a bit different:
When they add a shortcut on the left part of the finder window, done through finder preferences, like adding the house of their home folder,
it doesn't stay after leaving and re entering the session.
Do you know what could happen ?
    Thanks

  • Finder and Dock not responding to mouseover

You know how when you right click on a file and mouseover the 'open with' option to get a list of programs that are associated with the file type?
That stopped working on all of these type of menus, including the 'services' option that every programs top upper left dropdown gives you.
Also, and probably related, the dock does not hide and seek anymore, unless I switch to a different space, then it works for a second and then stops coming out of hiding.
It does the same thing when using the trackpad.
It may have to do with the latest update or X11.
Any ideas on this would be helpful.
    Thanks
    10.5.5
    Macbook Pro (2.2ghz)

    1.
-try to relaunch the finder, see if that works
    2.
    -move ~/Library/Preferences/ to a NewFolder
-log out/in, try to reproduce the issue
-if the issue is gone, move back the files in NewFolder to ~/Library/Preferences/ without replacing when asked

  • Strange icons behavior on Finder and Dock

    Hi!
I’ve purchased a new MacBook and am in the process of transforming my old iBook G4 into a sort of netbook for Web and iWork but am having some strange problems.
This notebook served me very well for several years but I decide to clean it after the migration of all my content to the new MacBook.
First I formatted and reinstalled Leopard on it. Then I performed all the OS online updates and finally installed iWork/iLife and also performed the online updates for these Apps. After that I activated MobileMe, imported all my data and began to download Apps like Evernote, Skype, etc.
After downloading some Apps I started to place their icons on the Dock but for some reason they simple disappeared after some seconds. Went to the web and found some tips to delete the Dock "plist" and some other files. Did that, perform a restart, but that didn’t work for me.
Since everything was new I decide to create a new user and test the Dock. It worked fine in the new user (without MobileMe activated) but then some other strange thing happened. The icons of installed Apps are not appearing on the Finder, though they were there in the deleted user. If I search for them with Spotlight they are there (in the Application folder!) and I can even drag them to the Dock, but for some reason they are not in the Finder window itself.
I remember selecting “install in all users” when installing all the Apps, so this cannot be the problem. Other interesting thing to notice is that if I search for a App with Spotlight, drag it to another place (out of the Application folder) and then move it back to the Application folder, the icon appears on the Finder window.
My questions are: Does anyone know what can be happening? Should I start all over reinstalling Leopard?
    Thanks!

After downloading some Apps I started to place their icons on the Dock but for some reason they simple disappeared after some seconds.
this is a very common mobileme issue caused by corupt sync data. turn off and reset mobileme syncing

Went to the web and found some tips to delete the Dock "plist" and some other files. Did that, perform a restart, but that didn’t work for me.
Since everything was new I decide to create a new user and test the Dock. It worked fine in the new user (without MobileMe activated) but then some other strange thing happened. The icons of installed Apps are not appearing on the Finder,
I don't understand what you mean by this.
though they were there in the deleted user. If I search for them with Spotlight they are there (in the Application folder!) and I can even drag them to the Dock, but for some reason they are not in the Finder window itself.
    which finder window?
I remember selecting “install in all users” when installing all the Apps, so this cannot be the problem. Other interesting thing to notice is that if I search for a App with Spotlight, drag it to another place (out of the Application folder) and then move it back to the Application folder, the icon appears on the Finder window.
My questions are: Does anyone know what can be happening? Should I start all over reinstalling Leopard?
    Thanks!

  • Finder and Dock Failing

After I've been logged in for awhile, without fail I will suddenly not be able to switch applications using the Dock or Command-Tab. The Dock will no longer animate and relaunching the finder does nothing. Eventually the finder will run very slowly then stop responding and I have to restart. Everything is then fine until it starts again. Any ideas?
    Thanks

    Euglenas:
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Try deleting the Dock .plist (Go to Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.dock.plist and drag the .plist to the desktop, then restart.) The computer will create a new .plist file in Preferences.
Let me know if this helps.
    Good luck.

  • Problems with 10.8.2 and Dock Settings

I just upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2 (directly from Lion) and am now having problems with my dock hiding automatically despite the settings being configured correctly so that it doesn't automatically hide.
It seems to have something to do with launching/using Safari.
Using a 2009 Macbook Pro with Intel Core 2 Duo processor. 4GB of RAM.
    Anyone know anything?

I should note that I can go back into settings and check then uncheck the "automatically hide" box and it shows up as normal...but then if I relaunch Safari, it hides again.
    Bizarre.

  • Help: computer and program settings mysteriously set to default...

Note: I did not rename my home directory at any point, even by accident.
Sequence of events: restarted Firefox after it crashed, and saw that all my bookmarks were missing. Shortly after, I restarted iTunes, and saw that all my content was gone (the files were still on my hard drive, though). I then restarted my computer, and saw that my desktop files were gone, and that the wallpaper and dock settings were back on default. I still have all my files, but they're not in the same places anymore.
Any idea how/why this happened? How do I fix this? Every solution I've come accross has to do with renaming my home directory, but I'm pretty sure that's not the cause of this...

Hmmm, did anyone else have access to it on that day? It seems it got created when it went missing.
Was it left on that day? Any Animals around?
I'm thinking you should make a new Admin user & move the folders in /Library/Documentation/User Guides And Information.localized/Users/danielmills to the new admin, then use
BatchMod, it's much better/easier than the Finder for recursive Permission changes...

  • Multiple Find and Replace

I have a set of 8 Find and Replace Settings in DW that I need
to perform on one file all the time. I don't know of any way to get
them all to run at the click of a button. These actions won't
    record in the command recorder.
Is there a way to write an extension that would perform these
Find and Replace Commands at one click?
Can someone please help me with this extension?
Also if there is a way for me to make each of these find and
replace settings a button in the object panel it would be ok also,
that way I can choose which ones I want to perform.
    Thanks in advance.

If you made backups of all of your photos and your catalog file using some third-party method (i.e. not using the PSE catalog backup command), then you should be able to restore everything.
Step 1. Put the photos in the EXACT SAME LOCATION as before. For example, if they were in subfolders of C:\Users\<username>\Documents, then they must go into the exact same subfolders of C:\Users\<username>\Documents.
Step 2. Move the catalog file to wherever you want it to be, and then double-click on it.

    Hi there,
Download a piece of software called TinkerTool - that might just solve your problem. I have used it myself to change the system fonts on my iMac. It is software and not an app.
    Good wishes,
    John.

Hi! My My mom bought me an iPhone 5 and I have a problem with my facetime. I cant find it! Cant find it in settings and restrictions. I remember when she gave me this I see facetime in settings and after a couple of days its gone! She bought this in Bahrain both my iPhone and her iPad Mini. And I'm just wondering why she has facetime and why mine is missing? Please help! My iMessage is perfectly working. I lived in the Philippines

Are you trying to use the phone in Bahrain with a supported carrier there? I suspect not. If you try to use this phone outside of Bahrain, you won't have FaceTime. This is done to prevent folks from simply crossing the border to purchase iPhones in Bahrain...FaceTime is banned in Saudi Arabia & the UAE. Sorry, but you'll only have FaceTime on that phone while using it in Bahrain on a supported carrier's network there.
