"backup for dummies": is there a simple strategy?

Hey, i currently do an incremental bootable backup using SuperDuper to an external hard drive via USB. works beautifully. love it. i'd just like the stuff on it to be secure from the eyes of any thief. i also want to have another copy off-site, and some sort of protection is particularly important for that.
option #1: i know i can create an encrypted disk image with a password and put files into it. but how can i do a whole bootable backup like that?
Bear in mind that i get a bit confused with the phrases 'disk image', 'clone' & 'encryption'; i'm not a complete dummy, just not a native geek-speaker. if you are kind enough to make any suggestions, pls keep that in (you beautiful, geek) mind.
jane

You might create a generic bootable external disk (just a minimum Mac OS X install and a copy of SuperDuper), then use an encrypted disk image (Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility). SuperDuper can backup to a disk image.
Now if you have a failure, you can boot from the minimum boot image, then mount the encrypted disk image and use the copy of SuperDuper to restore that image.
You could also look at packages such as "PGP Whole Disk Encrytion" and "TrueCrypt Whole Disk Encryption".
No matter how much you want to avoid the terms 'disk image', 'clone' & 'encryption', they are going to come up when dealing with securing your external disk.
Another off-site option might be to use something like Mozy, CrashPlan, JungleDisk, etc... to maintain an encrypted backup of your data via a network backup to a secure facility somewhere out in the network cloud. The data would be encrypted on you Mac before leaving your home. This would avoid needing to rotate external disks to an off-site location (manually doing this can get old, and then you forget to do it for a month, then 3 months, and the next thing you know, it has been a year since you rotated off-site storage; on-line net backup happens auto-magically).

On the computer you should be able to go to the network properites. Go to the TCP part and unchec the line that says obtaind DNS automatically and check the one that says use the following. Add the 8.8.8.8 and Google other 8.8.4.4.

You don't in the condition it's in. You will either have to get the phone replaced by Apple or pay a 3rd party to repair it.
there seriously should be more than two ways to solve this other wise apple is useless and we will never buy another apple product.
    Seriously? It's physically broken!

  • Is there a LogicExpress 9 book+DVD for dummies ?

Once upon a time I worked with Emagic's Logic and Roland's VS1680 hard disk recorder. Roland and Emagic collaborated to create the software that would control the VS1680 and audio data could be transferred back and forth. However there was a simple learning curve to manage the software and hardware.
As i try to work with LXPress 9 I am lost with the Logic concept. For example I just don't get the "object" concept. I need a book for dummies plus a DVD to "see" how to do this programme rather then stumble around. Perhaps there are some uTube videos that I have not found todate for LXpress 9.
    Is there a LogicExpress 9 book+DVD for dummies ?

    Hi,
The Apple Pro Training Series Book for Logic 9 would be your best bet. It will be available in a couple of weeks and comes with a dvd with lesson files.
Also, sflogicninja has a great series of Logic videos but only one for Logic 9 at this point.
Finally, Groove3 has some really good tutorials on Logic (& Pro Tools, etc.) that you can buy or rent to view online.

  • My business want to start using iPhones for our field techs is there a simple and inexpensive way to manage multiple phones?

I am a service manager for a small HVAC company, we want to issue iPones for our field staff (15) people, is there a simple management software out there that is also cost effective, I have used an iPhone for years, but have no experience with enterprise management, so simple would be best. Thanks for any help you can give.

If you are running MS Exchange for mail, you can use the Exchange management console to perform remote wipes.
We have used Casper for mac desktop management to good effect, I believe they offer more advanced remote management for iphones.
FWIW, we just used the Apple Iphone Configuration utility to build config profiles...

  • Is there a simple phonebook for the IC Webclient?

    Hi,
Is there a simple phonebook available for the IC Webclient?
We have a few agents who want to store the numbers, agent-based or centrally.
    Is that possible?
    Thanks for hints.

Phone numbers should be stored in your account masters, in B2B that can be both at the company and contact level.  Multiple phone numbers are allowed at both levels and can be searched on in the identify account.
Would seem redundant to me to store them elsewhere.

  • Time machine makes 30 backups for the last two days, no backups for any earlier times: is there a way to control it?

I've been running Time Machine in the background for as long as I've owned my current Mac--- a few months.  It is a completely generic set-up: it's a desktop (rarely shut off or asleep) connected to an external hard drive that is much larger (1 TB) than my internal hard drive (0.5 TB), and Time Machine is configured to save backups of my whole internal drive to the external drive.  The external is half-full, and the internal is a little more than half-full.  I often hear my external crunching away, working on something.
I recently needed to access an old file, so I went into Time Machine mode on the folder where it had been deleted a few weeks ago.  While I'm not upset that it isn't available (it's my own fault for deleting it), I didn't expect the Time Machine to have such a bad distribution of saved backups.  There are 30 backup snapshots of the past two days, and nothing earlier.  I was expecting something more like a few from today, a few from this week, a few from this month, and a few going all the way back in time--- a broader distribution.
I don't see any way to control this in the Time Machine Preferences (in fact, very little control at all).  Is there a secret way to control it, or some tip to ensure a more useful distribution of saved snapshots?
    Thanks,
    -- Jim

Thanks, but it doesn't exactly address my question.  TimeMachineEditor allows me to set the intervals or times when backups occur, but it doesn't control the algorithm that decides which snapshots should be deleted.  My problem was that Time Machine chose to delete all of the old snapshots and keep only the most recent ones: I'd like it to keep more of the recent ones than the old ones, but still keep some old ones.
In fact, the (unmodifyable) text on the Time Machine control panel says that it keeps:
hourly backups for the past 24 hours
daily backups for the past month
weekly backups for all previous months
That would be perfect if it were true.
Perhaps the algorithm did the wrong thing because the size of my internal hard drive varied quite a lot a few days ago: a process got out of control and used up all of my internal disk space.  I killed the process and deleted its output (several times), so my internal disk eventually went back down to normal.  Perhaps in the intervening hours, Time Machine made a backup, once an hour, and used up all of the external drive space.  When it had to choose between keeping "weekly backups of previous months" and "hourly backups of the past 24 hours", it chose to keep hourly backups of the past 24 hours.  This was the wrong choice in my case (it was the unwanted output) and is probably the wrong choice in most cases.
Is there a way to control the algorithm that decides which backups to keep and which to delete?  I would have it delete the hourly, daily, and weekly backups in a way that preserves their relative distribution.
By the way, while I have made it sound like my problem was a runaway log file (something that would be easy to put in an excluded directory with Time Machine's "Options" button), it was a VirtualBox snapshot merge.  The data in question are precious, but were unnecessarily copied many times while VirtualBox failed to merge them properly.  I can't simply exclude a directory: I'm talking about a more general problem.
    Thanks!

  • Does anyone have a solution for the I phone 4 acting as though it is sideways under most applications?  Is there a simple solution?

My daughters I phone 4 acts as though it is sideways when being used for the camera, messaging, and music,  Shutting the phone off seemed to fix it the first time, but it has acted up again and that remedy no longer works.  Am I missing something in the settings ?  Is there a simple solution ?  Thanks

    Hi,
Some of what you are describing is commun to a lot of user, some other not.
For specific third party apps crashing, I guess you will have to wait until an update for iOS6 from the developpers.  As for the App Store crashing, some research in forums that this is to be spreaded to many users.  For this one, no options seems to efficienly handle the issue and therefore, we will have to wait until an Apple update.
The fact that all your apps are crashing and that you got slow performances seems to be a more specific issue.  I think that performing a restore on your iPod should worth your time.  I personally got a few crashing apps as well as the AppStore but other than this, performaces are quite as with iOS5.

  • Is there a tutorial for layers for dummies

I have been messing with ps for a long time but avoiding anything to do with layers...I guess it is time to learn...Is there an easy way to learn layers  ie making a layer, saving a layer, editing layers ...in my advancing years we have to go slow..So is there a tutorial for layers for dummies??
    Capt Marvy

Bill, I came to Photoshop from the Amiga 1000 with Delux Paint, an application years ahead of its time, that would do animated 3D graphics, and with a cheap genloc, overlay them onto video.  Photoshop had reached version 4 by the time I switched, and I have always been a Windows user anyway.  You were spot on about when Layers were introduced though.
Capt, if you find, and like, Matt Kloskowski's book, then you might like to follow the Photoshop Guys on Photoshop User TV   That is an amazing free resourse, and there are over 300 episodes now.  Scott Kelby has got together one heck of a team over there, with as well as Matt and Scott Kelby himself, of course, there is Cory Barker of Planet Photoshop which is a first class resource all by itself.
I find video tutorials more accessible than books nowadays, because my eyesight is none too flash, which reminds of another worthwhile resource (and I am not being rude when I say)  You Suck at Photoshop.  These are hilarious, but also full of great content.  In fact Donny would be right at home in this group as he often dreams up clever ways to use Photoshop tools.  The way he makes the train disapear into the distance in his Vanishing Point video is just one example.

  • Is there a general strategy/best practices howto for keeping linux current?

We are an hpux shop currently thinking about oracle databases on linux.
If we do that ... well for me at the moment the strategy and tactics for applying software maintenance on a linux server is unclear at the best.
There are some hints from the linux oracle site about using up2date and yum repositories but ( probably missing several good sources ) I don't see a step by step discussion about goals ( how to keep system current and runable and patched appropriately without jeopardizing oracle database stability ) and tactics.
Could someone please point me in the right direction or steer me toward docs I have missed so far?
    Thanks John

I do not see any difference in keeping an HPUX and a Linux environment in a healthy state. Oracle Enterprise Linux is not a linux distribution specially designed to host Oracle databases or run Oracle software in general.
As soon as Linux updates/patches are available, they can be downloaded from the Oracle Enterprise Linux up2date/yum server. Which patches to install etc is up to sysadmin and dba,
and which package versions/updates/patches should be installed and which shouldn't with respect to run Oracle software is to be found in port specific Oracle Documentation
