Backup for Mac OS X 10.4.11

I am trying to upgrade my OS X version to the Snow Leopard but have no idea how to backup my data. I'm afraid it will get lost in the upgrade and have been to countless help menus, none of which can tell me how to do a simple backup for my Mac OS X version. Can anyone help?

You need an external Firewire drive to boot a PowerPC Mac computer.
I recommend you do a google search on any external harddrive you are looking at.
I bought a low cost external drive enclosure. When I started having trouble with it, I did a google search and found a lot of complaints about the drive enclosure. I ended up buying a new drive enclosure. On my second go around, I decided to buy a drive enclosure with a good history of working with Macs. The chip set seems to be the key ingredient. The Oxford line of chips seems to be good. I got the Oxford 911.
Has everything interface:
FireWire 800/400 + USB2, + eSATA 'Quad Interface'
save a little money interface:
FireWire 400 + USB 2.0
This web page lists both external harddrive types. You may need to scroll to the right to see both.
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/eSATAFW800_FW400USB
The latest the hard drive enclosures support the newer serial ata drives. The drive and closure that I list supports only older parallel ata.
Here is an external hd enclosure.

  • Does Time Machine conflict with Crashplan offline backup for Macs?

    Hello,
Has anyone experienced Time Machine on Macs conflicting with Crashplan offline backup for Macs?  I would like to run both on my iMac... Time Machine for local backup to my E-drive and Crashplan for a backup to their servers.
    Thanks

This article may be of help to you:
    http://support.crashplan.com/doku.php/articles/time_machine
I also want to point out that CrashPlan also supports local backup.

  • Search a backup made with Backup for Mac

I made several backups of old e-mail files using Backup for Mac (Mobile Me v.3.2.) Is there a way to search for specific e-mails within that file?

No. Mobile Me disappeared several years ago along with that backup software. If you have the old software and can still run it, then you also can use it to restore from an old backup file made with the software.

  • DVD backup for Mac OS Leopard

Hi, I'm new to mac, just transferring everything over from my windows machines.. but what I don't have is software to backup my movie DVDs.
Any suggestions for DVD cloning type software for Mac OS Leopard?

If you are talking about backing up purchased DVD movies... they are generally copyrighted and making backup copies is not permitted in the U.S. As your profile does not indicate where you are located... and copyright laws vary from country to country... you can use:

  • NO CONTACTS BACKUP FOR MAC USERS

Skype's Help pages breezily state that no backup is ever needed. Cuz Skype server cloud bla bla. You see.
Oh. There IS a backup procedure described, for Windows only. After the declaration that backing up is for sissies (Windows users? Sorry for the dig...), the Help article does then say clearly that NO such procedure is available for Mac.
We have been through a terrible experience in which my wife's Skype account was suspended -- for reasons never clear to us. The verification failed repeatedly; long chat sessions and multiple re-tries later somebody apparently realized this all was to no purpose and provided a path to reactivate her account.
    BUT.
The loss, had that not been possible, was of her contact list. I am worried about the same in my case, because not only are some numbers uniquely stored there, but a whole world of personal habit takes me back to look at Skype to retrieve many numbers. And then, usually, to use Skype to call them. Skype should be ashamed for not providing for the very real eventuality of the loss of a contact list. Safely archiving them on its servers does the user no good when Skype also makes access to that person's account impossible.
So this is a call to Skype to get on the ball. Not much more to be said. This forum and third party internet discussion areas are bursting with sad and -- dare one say it -- very angry (with justification) tales of woe. We add ours, here, implicitly.
In an email reply to the Skype person who did at last provide the means to re-access the account, we added our thought that the disconnects and wasted time were, if nothing else, a perfect advertisement for Skype's competitors, especially for KEKO (keko.com) which provides similar services at similar prices, and adds functionality such as making a simple local call and having that be processed via KEKO to connect with an international number anywhere in the world.
I hope that by including the direct reference to another VoIP provider, one which offers superior service, may goad Skype into action. If Skype will fix the contacts backup issue I will remove what I have written about another provider; and continue to use Skype as a principal channel.
That is, until Skype also fixes the horrible and wasteful, and -- for us -- ineffective (until someone apparently stepped in personally to set the account straight -- but who knows -- perhaps we were just lucky and that may as well not have happened, either?) manner it has to re-verify accounts. That has to see a revamp, too.
My wife and I have manually created an archive of our contact lists. Just everyone will be able to profit from our magical method, here it is: we made screen shots on the Mac of every 'page' of the contact list; that is, scroll down, hit Ctl + Shft + 3, hit fn + down arrow, and repeat until all 'pages' of contacts have been saved as screen shots.
Then, open in Preview, select all, and Print, exporting as a pdf; which can just be saved and/or printed for a hard copy archive.
As an embellishment, having Photoshop, we also opened the files in a batch in Adobe Camera Raw, where it is possible to batch process to enhance clarity on-screen, and to crop the screen shots en masse so that in the pdf the hard-copy printout can be made on fewer pages.
    It's a KLUGE.
    So is SKYPE, folks.
    Good day.

Unfortunately, this solution doesn't work on a Mac. I haven't been able to find a solution that does, so I'm putting one together. At a minimum, if you're familiar with grep (or have Text Wrangler, which allows grep-style replace and search), here's how you can convert your .pbb file to a text file that can be imported by Address Book:
Unfortunately, I've had to mess with this extensively to avoid the forum's formatting. Hopefully it works OK.
delete header ('CELLPBKb100' in my case)
    \[\^a-z\^A-Z\^0-9\] -> null
    (\[a-z\])(\[A-Z\]) -> \1 \2
    (\[a-zA-Z\])(\[0-9\]) -> \1\t\2
    (\[0-9\])(\[a-zA-Z\])-> \1\r\2
Import to Address Book. Define 1st field as 'first name', 2nd field as 'Phone(mobile)'. Uncheck 'Ignore first card'.
Note -- I used this piece of software to find the file format: http://www.versiontracker.com/php/dlpage.php?id=14667&db=mac&pid=25642&kind=&lnk =http%3A%2F%2Fwww.gwenhiver.net%2Fdownloads%2FAddressBookExporter-2.1.2.dmg
I'd love for a few people to send me .pbb files so I can make sure that my solution is universal. You can reach me through the email link on this post.

  • Backup for Mac air

Is iCloud total backup solution for pre 2011 Mac air?

It's not backing up your data, it is simply moving your data to iCloud so your devices signed into the account will all have consistent contacts, calendars, etc.  If you, for example, were to accidently delete your contacts on your Mac, they would be deleted from iCloud and all your devices.  Without another backup source, there would be no way to recover them.  If you have an iCloud backup of an iOS device containing this data you may be able to restore it from that (if it wasn't already overwritten by another backup made since the data was deleted), otherwise you're out of luck.
Also, it only handles a limited set of the data on your Mac -- far from a true clone of your entire hard drive.
As for the reference to Music, that is refering to iTunes in the Cloud, which allows your (in many countries) to redownload music purchased from the iTuens store should you ever need to.  You can "store" you entire iTunes library in iCloud (up to 25,000 songs), but that requires an annual subscription to iTunes Match.
Photos is referring to photo stream, which will stream photos between your devices, but the photos are only held in iCloud for 30 days.  If you lost them, you would only be able to recover photos added in the last 30 days from iCloud.

  • Can anyone recommend the best ONLINE backup for Mac's

Hello, I have a new Macbook Pro, and would like to take an extra step and backup
my pictures, my files, my i-tunes library, onto an online service. Does anyone use one
now or have you had any experience with using an online service? Thanks

While MobileMe does offer up cloud storage, I wouldn't say it's a great backup service as such. You have to manually copy stuff etc. It's not automated - of course there are ways to automate it of course.
Also, you need to consider the amount you need to store. 20Gb standard with MobileMe, beyond that you pay to upgrade?
Personally I prefer to use automated services. My current favourite is Mozy - you can read about my experiences here: http://www.markc.me.uk/MarkC/Blog/Entries/2009/7/15Online_Backups_-Mozy.html
I've the best part of 1Tb of uploaded backed up data on there now, all for 50ish dollars/year. Bargain, and works well.

  • Re: Online Backup Services for Mac?

pc users have online backup services such as carbonite to choose from. Is there an equivalent backup service for Macs?
My pc friend says he pays $50/year for his online service which makes more sense than having an external drive next to your computer. Good when your hard drive craps out, yes, but not so good if both get damaged due to fire, water, etc. or disappear due to theft.

There are a few, but I have only been experimenting with .Mac so far (which mostly for the other features). You can do a search for : online backup for mac : and several show up. I have heard good things from others about Mozy. Note the file transfer for any online service will be limited by your network bandwidth and availability.
    Others may have specific recommendations.

  • HT4859 can I use icloud to backup my mac?

can I use icloud to backup my mac?

iCloud does not provide general file storage, nor backup for Macs (only iOS devices): and if as your signature states you are running 10.4.11 you can't use iCloud at all except in the single case of being able to access email on a pre-existing iCloud account.
If you want online storage/backup you will need a third-party alternative - this page examines some options, but note that it's likely that they all require a reasonably recent system:

  • Time Machine questions: Handling backups for multiple Macs to one FW drive

I am reviewing the Time Machine thread and seeing a lot of helpful information, but I would like to ask something I haven't quite found yet.
We have 2 Leopard Macs, a MacBook Pro and an intel iMac... with plans to upgrade another MBP from Tiger to Leopard at some point.
In planning for Time Machine, we set up a 1 TB drive, attached it via FW 800 to the iMac, partitioned it GUID for Intel, and made 3 partitions, one for each planned Mac we want to back up to it.
I started Time Machine on the iMac first and the first backup of about 100 gb took maybe 4 hours.
Then we tried to start the Time Machine backup for the MBP over the network (wireless). It was understandably much slower and quit with some error last evening, so I took advantage of the pause to move the notebook to a wired ethernet connection. It got even slower so this morning I directly connected it FW 800, erased what had been backed up, and started over. So far, so good. 6GB out of 100 in 10 minutes or so. The idea being, if we can get the first backup completed faster over wired connection, maybe doing the incrementals over wireless network will be okay. Sounds like some folks are doing that successfully. I am hoping that works out.
Questions: Was it necessary to partition my 1TB drive into a partition for each Mac's Time Machine backup? I did make each partition bigger than the hard drive it is designated for.
To get the MBP to mount the external FW drive on its desktop, I had to disconnect the drive from the iMac. Is there any way I can connect the FW drive to both the MBP and the iMac (the drive has two FW 800 out connections, so it is physically possible)? I'm thinking (from reading posts of others with notebooks) that one strategy is to connect your notebook to your Time Machine drive at night and let it back up, but it'd be great if I could leave the iMac connected while doing so. Is there a way the volumes on the drive can mount on both desktops?
When I try wireless again, I'm seeing mixed posts regarding whether the MBP will need a password to log in to the remote volume each time, or only the first time when the Time Machine backup is established... if I could get clarification on that, it would be helpful.
    Thanks!
    thanks

What do you see on your notebook when you click on your TimeMachine icon in the Dock?
My notebook is mounting the backup drive on an hourly basis, running a backup, and looking like it is doing something... but when I then look at TimeMachine, I can't see the backups. (On my iMac with the drive directly attached, I see a progression of windows showing all the hourly backups the last 24 hours, etc.) I just called Apple to ask why this is so, and they told me they couldn't help me because wireless Time Machine backups aren't supported.
I know backups to a hard drive attached to an Airport Express Base Station are not supported. But when they say "You can designate just about any HFS+ formatted FireWire or USB drive connected to a Mac as a Time Machine backup drive. +Time Machine can also back up to another Mac running Leopard with Personal File Sharing, Leopard Server, or Xsan storage devices+"... well, how can you DO that?

  • Can I use a single external drive to maintain time machine backups for two Mac computers?

    Hello
We have an older mac mini and macbook air.  I have one Western Digital external USB drive.  Can I use the same drive to hold and maintain time machine backups for both machines?
I already have the macbook air time-machined on the WD drive.  I now want to backup the mac mini onto the same drive.  Is it going to over write the time machine backup or is the software smart enough to maintain two separate files, partitions, whatever it does..?

It will maintain separate backups. Note that it's generally advisable to use separate drives for best practice backup, but yes, it will work for both computers, provided you have enough space (need generally 2-3 times the total used file space for both Macs).

  • Backup fail on Time Machine and My Passport for Mac on Yosemite

Cannot seem to get Time Machine to do a full backup of my NEW My Passport for Mac.
    I've:
    - Updated firmware on WD external drive (and formatted correctly for Apple)
    - Updated to latest IOS 10.10.3 (Yosemite)
    - Verified and repaired Mac HD via iOS Disk Utility and the WD Drive Utility (no issues found on either)
Error message continues to be "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to My Passport for Mac. An error occurred while copying files. The problem may be temporary. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk."
I'm backing up about 250 GB and have done this numerous times on my Passport for Mac. Everything SEEMS to be fine during backup, until after about 2-3 hours, into a 4-hour backup, the error message appears without any error codes.
Does anyone have any input?  I don't think it is on the WD side.  Anyone know if there an issue with Time Machine and this external drive?  Help!
    Thanks,
    Dave

  • Clear space (old backups) WD My Passport for Mac HD

    Hi,
I have purchased an external hard disk WD My Passport for Mac in order to backup my MacBook Air regularly (with time machine) and store films and pictures to save space from my mac.
I have just realised that I have several old backups from my MacBook air stored in the hard drive which are taking quite a lot of space. I have tried deleting the old backups manually (I only need the last one, why would I need a backup from January?), however, the folder disappears but the space doesn't clear up, I'm guessing it's not possible to fully delete back ups this way.
I have read that it's possible deleting those old backups connecting the hard drive to a Windows PC but I do not have one (or any of my family or friends for that matter), surely there has to be a simpler way to clear up space from the hard drive, right? I have read to save the backup and files on my computer and then delete everything through disk utility, but I don't have enough space to keep the old backup and all the media I have stored on my HD in my mac (or another HD) in order to delete everything. Besides, it just sounds stupid, I should be able to delete old back ups easily.
    Thanks in advance!
    Marta

    Hi MadameMarta,
If you backed up your computer onto that external hard drive using Time Machine, then you will want to see the information in the following article to help you address this issue:
OS X Mavericks: Remove a backed-up item from your backup disk
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14221
You can move, copy, or delete the Backups.backupdb folder on your Time Machine backup disk as you would other folders. You can also delete folders within the Backups.backupdb folder. You can’t delete individual items inside the dated folders.
Important: Do not use Terminal or any app other than the Finder to move, copy, or remove items from the Backups.backupdb folder.
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!
    Cheers,
    Braden

  • Time Machine will not complete backup with WD My Passport for Mac

I am on 10.10.3 and am trying to backup up this particular machine for the first time.  I had a 1TB WD My Passport for Mac that worked fine on my older Macbook Pro (which has not been updated to 10.10.3) and have been slow in getting around to backing up this new machine.  I tried the 1TB after clearing space and it wasn't working.  Figured it must be something with that drive, so I bought a new one (needed more space anyway) and just received a new 2TB WD My Passport for Mac.  Tried the update again via Time Machine and it went through the entire process only to tell me it couldn't complete.  The drive has something on it now because it doesn't have the full 2TB free and in finder the file says "in progress" at the end of the file name under backup.  Please help.  I need to backup this machine and now think it is Apple related and not drive related.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes.) You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard."
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamp of the last "Starting" message that corresponds to the beginning of an abnormal backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showing, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Customizing a backup plan for mac osx10.6.8

What to do to backup all content of every file to an external hard drive Go-Flex Pro for Mac
My old back  back up plan is not sufficient.  i dont seem to have Time Machine with my Sno leopard
    Thank you

Unless you deleted the application, you most certainly do have Time Machine. There is a prefence pane for it in the system settings, and the application itself is in the Applications folder.
If for some reason you prefer not to use Time Machine, then there are a number of third-party synchronization applications available such as Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper, ChronoSync, and a number of others.
    Regards.
