Backup from 3GS to iphone4 failed!!!

Before I went to get my new iPhone 4 today I backed up my 3GS twice to besure it backed up before I traded it in. I updated the software and ITunes before I backed it up. Went and got my new iPhone 4 got back to the house to restore it from my backup, I right clicked the phone and proceeded to restore it. The only backup on my ITunes was from 2009 when I got my 3GS new. What happened to my last backup? What can I do to get all of my contacts back?

Dvldogyut,

  • Is it possible to restore iCloud backup from iPhone3 to iPhone4 ?

I had an iPhone 3 which had an hardware error, but I have an older iCloud backup of it.
Now I got a used iPhone4 from a friend of mine, which he "cleaned" before he gave it to me.
This is the first time I got to use this service - thank god I made an iCloud backup before my old iPhone died.
Now I want to know if it is possible to restore my old iPhone 3 backup on my iPhone 4.
Maybe there are some problems, because of different iOS (6 vs 7) or different hardware?
Did the iCloud backup include my previously installed apps, or do I have to download them again? What about SMS - included or not?
Thanks for your help in advance!

Yes, you can.  The only requirement is that the device you are restoring the backup to must be running the same or higher version of iOS as the device that was backed up.  If it isn't, you'll need to update the iOS before you can restore the backup.
An iCloud backup will reinstall apps that were on the device that was backed up by redownloading them from the App store.  As long as the apps are still available in the App store they will be redownloaded, although if the device that was backed up had an older version of an app, the most recent version of the app is likely to be restored to your device.

  • Upgrading from 3gs to Iphone4

I have recently signed a 3 year contract with FIDO for the iphone 3gs (like AT@T etc), now that the Iphone4 is out, I am craving to get it, but I don't wanna have to buy out of the contract. Does anyone know if there is anyway I can Upgrade my phone without having to pay tons of extra money, and just trade it in?

I upgraded and have lost my application settings and data. i.e. game progress was lost and years of application data was lost. I have tried to restore but to no avail. Very frustrating.
I have started a thread on this item:

  • Problems restoring new iphone5s with a backup from a 3gs

I'm trying to transfer contacts, SMS from an iPhone 3GS to a 5s by restoring the 5s from a backup from the 3GS, but I keep getting a message saying the backup is corrupt or not compatible.
I've tried upgrading the iOS on both to the latest version (6.1.6 for the 3GS and 7.1.1 for the 5s) before backing up the 3GS (to the Cloud) and restoring the 5S but I get the same error.
I also tried Restoring iPhone for the 5s before another restore from back up, but I still get the same corrupt/incompatible error message.
I'm using Windows XP and ITunes 11.2.2.3
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I just tried restoring the 5s from the cloud backup just using the phone (i.e. without connecting to iTunes) and it worked

I have an iPhone 3GS that I dropped in water for a moment. After drying it and everything, it still does everything but get service. Can I back it up and transfer its data to a new iPhone 3GS? I heard something about how loading a backup from a water damaged phone could mess up the new one... is this true? I would truly appreciate the help, please let me know, thanks!

Sounds like your phone is in recovery mode.  In this case, all data on it is gone.  There's nothing to back up.

    Hi,
you are restoreing PC4 database on system QC4.
This requires a netbackup permission configuration to allow client QC4 to access the backup from system PC4.

  • I just got a 4s. Can I restore the backup from my 3Gs to my new 4s?

    Hi,
I just got an iPhone 4s.  I would like to tranfer the data from my 3Gs running IOS 4.3.5 from a backup of my 3G to populate my 4s.
Can this be done or must I update my 3Gs to IOS 5 first?
    Thanks.

Backup your 3GS with iTunes, then connect your 4S and when prompted elect to restore from this backup rather than set up as new.  See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2109.

Well, first off, you are not addressing Apple here. This is a user to user PUBLIC forum. You should not post your personal information like that. Try closing iTunes, reboot the computer and connect again. Are you using the latest version of iTunes, v11.1?

  • I can't delete the backup from icloud.

Change my iphone4 to iphone4s,use the same icloud ID.
I restore the iphone4 backup from icloud to my iphone4s,and the iphone4 will not use any more.
Now,I can see two devices' backup in my icloud.
I try to delete the iphone4 backup from iphone4s,but failed may time, why?

I have the same scenario. Few days ago replaced my iphone 4 and got a new 4S. initially i logged in with the same apple id and restore from the iphone 4 backup..That gave me some glitches so i restored the phone and decided to setup as a new device. So now i wanted to delete the iphone4 backup from icloud. I've been trying from the phone and the icloud control panel and still not able to delete it. It gives an error that itrs being used to restore a device or is in use.
I've tried all sorts of combination, deleting from the ipad, iphone, turning icloud back on/off,, iheck i even went as far as to delete my icloud account but that doest do anything. When i recreated the account, all my data was still there,, Seems like there is no way to delete your data once on the cloud!!!!

  • IPhone 3GS OS Upgrade Failed

    Hey Guys,
I downloaded the latest update of itunes and attempted to update to the new OS everything seemed to be going ok then it failed, now my phone is stuck on the screen of the itunes symbol and the power cable, its not being recognized in itunes either any ideas on how to fix?

Ok this is wat happened to my iPhone 3GS after I opted to upgrade to iOS4.0:
After the upgrade file finished downloading, the installation process got initiated. However, after a few minutes, the process crashed throwing up an Error 1602. My phone just displayed the connect to itunes logo. I did a hard reset (by pushing the home button & the power on/off button simultaneously) and the phone entered the recovery mode (or DFU or watever it is called). I reopened itunes and connected the iphone again. This time, I was told that the phone has been detected on recovery mode. I clicked RESTORE & it told me that the phone would be restored to factory settings, which I chose. The recovery process started and after a coupla minutes, I got another error. This time it was Error 1601.
After spending a good 2 hrs researching the internet, I found the solution that did work for me. Here goes...U would need another computer for this (not the one u have been using to sync ur iphone with):
    1) Install itunes 9.2 on another computer.
    2) Connect ur iphone (while it displays the connect to itunes logo).
    3) itunes will detect an iphone on recovery mode.
    4) Click Restore. itunes will tell u that ur phone can be restored to factory settings. Choose OK.
    5) itunes will automatically download iOS 4.0
    6) once the download is complete, installation of iOS 4 should start immediately. if for some weird reason it doesnt initiate, press shift+restore and select the installation file (it is located in C:\Documenst & Settings\User\Application Data\Apple Computer\itunes\iphone software updates\xxxxx.ipsw )
    7) Once u've selected this file, installation will start & ull get a progress bar on ur iphone as well.
    8) The installation should come around fine & after a coupla automatic reboots, ur iPhone should now be up & running with iOS 4.0
    9) Itunes will ask you to name ur iphone. at this point, eject the iphone from the computer & connect it to the other computer (the one which u previously used to sync the iphone with). open itunes & ull get 2 options: Create a new iphone or restore backup from "Sandy's iPhone" ur iphone's name. Choose the 2nd option & watch ur iphone being restored with all ur backup.\
    10) once the sync is complete, eject & enjoy iOS 4
    Phew
    Cheers!!!

  • Can I choose which backup for Time Machine to use if I have backups from two macs on one drive?

I have Time Machine backup on an external drive. I want to mirgrate all my files onto the new Mac Pro but migration is getting hung up and cant find the drive. Can I set up Time Machine for the new mac on this same drive and then select the old macs backup from within Time Machine?

Most likely, some folders were excluded from your backups as the result of a failed or aborted software installation.
Starting from a clean installation of OS X, set up a new administrator account and log in. Enter Time Machine and press the key combination shift-command-C. The front window will show all mounted volumes. All snapshots should now be accessible.* Select the one you want and navigate to your home folder (in the Users folder at the top level of the old startup volume.)
You should now be able to restore your user data. I suggest you do this in two stages. Quit all applications except the Finder before you begin.
Restore all the visible items at the top level of your home folder.
Hold down the option key and select Go ▹ Library from the Finder menu bar. Enter Time Machine and restore all items in the Library folder. Log out and log back in as soon as the restore is complete.
Any other invisible folders or files at the top level of your home folder that you want to preserve will have to be restored separately. For most users, that isn't necessary.
You'll have to reinstall all third-party applications from scratch, or restore them from another kind of backup, if you have one.
You'll have another problem if this is a new computer, or if you erased the startup volume: The next time you back up, Time Machine won't recognize any files as being the same as they were before, and will make a full copy of all files. There might not be enough space on one or more of your backup volumes for that. There are different ways of dealing with that situation, depending on your needs. The easiest way is to set your backup drives aside, if possible, until you're sure you'll no longer need the data on them, then erase them and start over. Meanwhile start a new backup on one or more empty storage devices. If that solution isn't workable for you, ask for instructions.
*If you don't see any snapshots in Time Machine, exit the time-travel view and then hold down the option key while selecting
    Browse Other Backup Disks...
from the Time Machine menu, which has an icon that looks like a clock running backwards. Select the backups of your computer by its previous name. If you don't have the Time Machine menu, open the Time Machine preference pane in System Preferences and check the box marked
Show Time Machine in menu bar
