Backup from another mac's time capsule

Moving iMovies home.  Want to get files from office MacMini to home MacPro.  Have 4 internal drives and prefer to load on to one, not the primary hard drive.
Took Time Capsule from MacMini home, connected by Ethernet (MacPro's Time Capsule still connected in other ethernet port.
This is what I did, and the disappointing result:
Used Migration Assistant hoping to transfer from Mini's Time Capsule to the Mac  Pro.  Selected option to only transfer files.  Had to password twice in the process, then a relatively short wait (2min) while the horizontal blue barber pole rolled.  then it finished, said it was done I believe.  But I cannot find my files.
Note I used Migration Assistant per the instructions for Maverick's OS, and I have Mountain Lion (maybe not.  It's 10.7.5 on this machine)--but the link for backing up with Mountain Lion happens to go right to the Mavericks instructions.
Question:  How to?
Question:  If I did it right, where are my files on my MacPro

AND NOW MY TIME CAPSULE MacPro is not viewable.  Try to enter Time Machine and get error 6584.  I also note that in the Time capsule preferences page, an odd thing has happened: It indicates "Latest BackUp = NONE".  It also shows I have 2.12 TB available of 3.0 TB, and I know it has been backing up til now.

  • Can I restore backup from another mac with time machine?

I would like to restore files from a TM backup from another Mac - is this possible? Thanks.

I'm not sure I know how to help. I use OS X Server's Time Machine services from a Mac Mini to do my back ups to a drive connected to that server. I have the same user account on one MBP Retina that does not do back ups as another MBP Retina that DOES back ups. However, I can't even open the sparse bundle from the one that doesn't do back ups of the one that does (if that makes sense).
You might try and see if this link helps. This guy was the TM guru around here. He might have addressed a solution to what you're trying to do.

  • Copy Time Machine backup from Hard drive to Time Capsule

I have my Time Machine backup on my external hard drive. Is there a way to copy this to the Time Capsule so I don't lose the backup and to save time on the initial backup. Is there a way to make the Backups.backupdb folder into the Time Capsule Sparsebundle? Any ideas?

AppleCare just told me this was not possible (5-23-8 3:56pm EDT).
This is too bad as people do not want to lose their archive data and it is possible with pre-existing wifi TM backups (ex. my wifi's MB use to backup to my local iMac and since it is sparsebundle, it can be moved around(now backups up to AEBS/USB 10.5.2) same image file)

  • Accessing Time Capsule backup from another Mac

My son's laptop failed, and I need to pull some files off of the time machine backup on our Time Capsule for him to use. Time Machine only lets me access MY backup. Is there any way, short of restoring his entire account onto my computer, to access individuals files for another user that are on the Time Capsule?
As an aside, this seems like a flaw in the way Time Machine works - there should be an easy option to access the directory for any data stored on the Time Capsule when used my multiple users.
    Thanks

  • Transferring Time Machine backup from old to new Time Capsule

After transferring my old Time Machine backup from a 5 year old Time Capsule to a new Airport Time Capsule, my MacBook Air wants to start a new full Time Machine backup to the new TC. I was under the impression that the Time Machine backups would pick up where they left off. Was I mistaken? Is the backup supposed to begin anew even if you've transferred an old backup?
Also, if it must begin from scratch, how would I access the old TM backups if I needed to restore a file from the old backup?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

How far did you go? By that I mean did you allow the MBA to actually start the backup.
It can be very simple thing.. I have done it lots of times in my repairs to Time Capsules.. if I move a sparsebundle to another location, TM will not even check for the old sparsebundle until it start running.
So the operation is as follows..
    Move the sparsebundle.
There is an Apple document as well as what Pondini produced.
    Transfer TM backups..
    Apple doco. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5097
    Pondini doco http://pondini.org/TM/18.html
As long as you are talking network backups it doesn't much matter. The same rules apply to moving the sparsebundle.
When you reset TM to the new location of the backup.. it will always tell you it will begin a new backup..
As long as you did not change the computer name.. or install a new OS or upgrade.. only when the backup actually starts will it look for existing sparsebundles.. find it.. and begin from where it left off.
So you simply have to start. Wait for TM to figure out there is an existing sparsebundle with the correct name.. and start what will often be a deep scan of the existing sparsebundle. So it can take a long time.. and we do still recommend doing this first one by ethernet.. albeit on an Air that does mean buying the thunderbolt to ethernet dongle.
As a general principle I generally recommend people do start a new backup. Archive the old one.. it is easy to access old backups.. Again see pondini FAQ.. 14-17 on all the neato things you can do.

  • Safely archiving sparsebundle backups from a full 1TB Time Capsule?

    Hi everyone --
Our original (1TB) Time Machine backups are starting to through "This backup is too large for the backup disk". I believe this is because it still contains backups for an old laptop that I'd like to safely archive to secondary storage. When mounting the Time Capsule in the Finder, it shows 3 sparsebundle:
    Ramon's Mac Mini.sparsebundle (263GB, last updated today)
    Ramon's MBAir 1.sparsebundle (123.3GB, last updated today)
    Ramon's MBAir.sparsebundle (484.6GB, last updated Dec 18, 2010)
The first is for a Mac Mini. The second two are for a Macbook Air. The Air is a replacement for one that was stolen about a year ago. Thus we have 2 sparsebundles for the laptop, one whose last update is a year ago, and a second for the new Air that covers backups over the past year.
I'd like to keep all of these backups, but the sparsebundle for the original laptop ("Ramon's MBAir.sparsebundle") is really only needed for archival purposes and I'd be fine moving that to secondary storage. So my questions are:
Is this possible without messing up the TC backup model (I've ready http://pondini.org/TM/C4.html and it doesn't seem to list this approach as an option)?
If so, what is the right approach for migrating such a backup file off of a network accessible Time Capsule to a different network-accessible drive, ideally so it is still browsable via the Time Machine UI?
    Thanks,
    Ramon

Do you really need backups that are over a year old?
It won't be quick or easy.
There is a way to archive the TC's entire disk to a USB drive connected to it, but it has some downsides.  See  the green box in #Q6 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule for details.
Or, you can copy the sparse bundle to another disk (drag it via the Finder), then delete it.  Connect the other disk directly to your Mac;  unlike the procedure above, the data must pass through your Mac, so sending it back to the TC, then a USB drive connected to it will be, well, slower than molasses in winter.  Doing it to a directly-connected HD will still be quite slow, so connnect via Ethernet cable if at all possible.
Once it's copied, you can connect the HD to the TC if you want to, and access it via the Browse... option, per #17 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.

  • Time machine: remote backup from internet to my Time Capsule

    Hi,
I don't know how configure my TC and my icluod account in order to have backup of my mac on TC by internet. In my local network all is working fine but from internet I can access to my time capsule but when I try to backup there is a error message: backup disk is not available.
    Do you have any idea?
    tnx

before I was able to do it...after remove of TC (iCloud version) by TM I cannot
There might be a very good reason for it.
Try using it without iCloud.. link directly to the TC using AFP over internet.
See example here for how to setup with TC behind a router.
    http://gigaom.com/2009/05/14/access-your-time-capsule-over-the-internet/
Even easier if the TC is the main router.. just turn on wan access for AFP.
But you are going to need to run a computer to locate the TC via dyndns if you don't pay the extra for static IP from your ISP.

  • Time machine backup from external hdd to time capsule

Is it possible to transfer an time machine backup from an external hdd to a time capsule? I have changed the original 2tb time capsule hdd to a 3tb hdd because of loud sounds from the 2tb hdd. Now i want to transfer the backup from the (now external) 2tb hdd to the new 3tb hdd which is now in the time capsule. Could anybody help me?

Yes, it should be easy.. just copy the sparsebundle from the old 2TB plugged into your computer to the TC.
This will take a few hours maybe a lot more if the drive is near full.. use ethernet.. do not even dream of using wireless.. Do not plug the 2TB into the TC USB.. that is super slow.. plugged into your computer with a FW hard disk holder would be the ideal.. but USB is ok.
    http://pondini.org/TM/18.html
    Is it worth it??
Saving old backups.. or simply start again.. a clean fresh backup is much more efficient. Put the 2TB drive in a draw.. if you haven't needed any files on it in 6months from now.. wipe it.

  • Move Time Machine backup from hard drive to Time Capsule

I have a new Time Capsule.  Can I move my existing Time Machine backup from a hard drive to the TC?  The tips given back in 2010 in this forum are no longer available.

It is extremely difficult if the disk you are talking about is plugged into your computer.. TM does different kind of file for network drives.. so you need to trick it.
    See Q18 here.

  • Way to extract files from TM Backup from another Mac?

Earlier this week my 2mo old work iMac's HDD got corrupted. I took the iMac into an Apple store and they decided it needed a new hard drive. Luckily, I use Time Machine on a constant basis so I have a backup of all my work files.
However, while the iMac is in the shop for a week, I'm using a personal Macbook pro. I am great need to be able to extract some specific work files so I can continue working. Can this be done?
There is a possible kicker to this, the iMac runs on 10.6.4 while my Macbook Pro is running on 10.5.8. So I will be accessing a time machine backup from an older version of it. Is what I need still possible?

Okay, I think I solved my own question. I plugged in the ext HDD that stores the time machine backup for my work iMac into my personal macbook pro. Then I held down the option key and clicked on the Time Machine icon in the top main menu bar. "Browse Other Time Machine Disks" showed up and I was able to select the specific files I needed and then clicked on "Restore" and it asked me where to save them.

2 - 22.77GB is way more than the OS itself so what else is in that 22.77GB of data ?
3 - i'm planning to give the MBP to my younger brother and would like none of my personal data.

  • HT201250 Can one view pics from iPhoto application in time capsule backup?

I am attempting to use my time capsule as a general backup disk for all my pics and movies in iPhoto, to then be able to erase all pics from my iMac.  Can one view iPhoto pics from the backup time capsule?

You cannot "see" the images in your iPhoto Library on the Time Capsule. You can only restore the complete library.
If you erase the iPhoto Library from your Mac, then iPhoto will not be able to find the iPhoto Library on the Time Capsule
Do NOT ever erase the images from your Mac.
If you do this, the only version that you will have will be on the Time Capsule. What will happen to your images when....not if....the Time Capsule has a problem?
In addition, Time Machine backs up the changes on your Mac. If you delete the iPhoto Library from your Mac, then Time Machine will delete the backup....and you will not know when this will occur.

  • I want to transfer files from a Win XP PC to a Mac using Time Capsule via Ethernet connection.  Is this possible?

I want to transfer files from a Win XP PC to a Mac using Time Capsule via Ethernet connection.  Is this possible?

Sure.. the PC connects by SMB.. the Mac connects by AFP or SMB..
But you can simply share SMB directly from the Mac.. there is no need to copy files through the TC. Go to system preference, sharing, and turn on SMB for the folder you want to share files to / from on the Mac.
Make sure you have a common username and password also helps.
If you have a TC already can you copy files to it via the windows machine??

  • Mac Formatted Time Capsule w/ PC Formatted External Drive Via USB?

I use a Mac-formatted Time Capsule to run Time Machine backups on my MacBook Pro.  My wife backs up her PC laptop on a PC-formatted Western Digital "My Book" hard drive which is powered via A/C wall adapter.  I connected the Western Digital PC drive to the Time Capsule via USB so it would be available on our home network and my wife could run her PC backups wirelessly, BUT the drive is not showing up on our network.  Anybody have any idea what I'm doing wrong?
    Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the in depth clarification.  A few follow up questions:
    1) Are you saying that even though I am only using the TC (in this instance) to make the windows drive available on the network, the drive still needs to be formatted in HFS+?
HFS+ or FAT32.. the later having severe issues with large disk and large files.
    Great.  I'll do HFS+
    2) If I format the windows drive in HFS+, will the windows laptop be immediately able to write/read to it over the network?  Or will I have to install some sort of program on the windows laptop that allows windows to read/write to HFS+ (which I've always undewrstood to be a mac only format)?
The format of the disk connected to a NAS is totally irrelevant.. if it offers windows networking file protocol.. ie SMB then it can store files on the hard disk.. it is just like sharing the disk in the Mac.. you can write to that directly from the PC. Try it.. The disk is controlled by the Mac. But it presents SMB to the Network.. On your Mac, go to system preferences.. sharing.. it should be in Internet and wireless.. but on Lion I have no idea. Open file sharing which should be ticked..there should be a public folder by default.. you can add others.. go to options, turn on SMB.. then from the windows computer you should see the disk available in networking. If not fix the names to SMB standard.. you will need to do this on the TC as well.. short, no spaces.. pure alphanumeric names. Copy some files from windows to your Mac.. you have now copied to a network drive.. with the drive format totally irrelevant to your windows computer.
I'm sorry, but I don't know what "windows networking file protocol" and "SMB" mean.  Also, when you say "NAS" are you referring to the Time Capsule or another device?  Can you please explain things like "The disk is controlled by the Mac but it presents SMB to the network" in a less advanced way.  Pretend I'm a child.  You won't be far off.  It seems like this technique you're explaining is a way for the windows PC to write to the external drive via my MacBook.  Is that even close to correct?  The setup I must create needs to work regardless if macbook is on/off/out of the house.
    3) Does plugging a USB drive into the TC never work properly or is this just a semi-common problem that happens sometimes?  My odds of success will probably dictate whether I try this or not.  I already own the windows USB drive and would like to avoid buying more hardware if possible.
It is problematic enough that I recommend you try it before committing to it. Even if you have to copy the files off to another location and then reformat the drive. Test it for a couple of days.. the issue happens especially when you are using Lion.. but will also happen with windows. Especially when the disk spins down it will not spin up again and become available to the network.
    Got it.
    4) What do you mean by files being in "native format"?  And what does a dead TC have to do with whether or not they can be recovered to the windows laptop?  If the TC dies, can't I just plug the windows USB drive directly into the windows laptop and it will be the same thing as connecting the drive and laptop via network?  How does a dead TC make things more difficult?
    Thanks for your continued help.
HFS+ is not windows native format... so files stored by the TC on the USB drive.. when the TC dies.. they all die eventually may be difficult to recover unless you plug it into another TC.. as the PC cannot natively read them. If you format FAT32 then the windows computer can read it.. just there are other issues. eg the disk can be slow.. very slow and it has far less protection. eg a power failure can corrupt the drive.. this was an issue before we moved in windows to NTFS.
Why do you say "files stored BY THE TC on the USB drive"  Why is the TC storing files on the USB drive?  Isn't plugging the USB into the TC just making the USB available on the network to my windows laptop?  Why is the TC storing files?
