Backup Gmail using Mail.app and IMAP

I would like to backup my Gmail emails using Apple Mail. I have IMAP turned on in Gmail. I know I need to add the account in Mail but I'm not sure what to do after that. I'm thinking I need to create a local mail folder in order to store the emails.
Also, how could I automate this? Is Mail the best option for this scenario? Again, I'm only wanting this as a backup for Gmail.

How about avoiding redundancy (http://superuser.com/questions/114253/backup-gmail-using-mail-app-and-imap-witho ut-redundancy)?
I got this all working, there's even this literally great guide on my superuser post (http://db.tidbits.com/article/10253) but IMAP generates a lot of repeated files due to gmail labels nature.
Anyone knows a way to circle around this and still be able to use IMAP and labels with mail.app and gmail?

  • Using Gmail with Mail.app and Notes

I have the preference set to store notes on Gmail's server. If I create a note on my Mac it just looks like a funny message through Gmail with the subject and the body the same and the sender as (Unknown Sender) which is no big deal but I would like to be able to create notes with Gmail because I have a G1 and use it constantly.
Is there a way to create a note with Gmail so that it shows up like a note in Mail.app?

Open the Print & Scan preference pane in System Preferences and delete the print queue, then add it back. If there's no change, reset the printing system.

  • Mail.app and IMAP does not change message in server

    Hello all...
I'm having a strange problem with Mail.app.. I have a IMAP server that uses pine-imapd. I can login and read messages, but anything I do with the messages to not change the message status on the server... If I read a new message, it remains NEW on server, if I delete, it DO NOT delete form server, and so on.. There are cases that I keep receiving the same message over and over again, but actually there's only one message on the server... I used to use Linux with Evolution and everything works just fine, but with Mail.app on Leopard, I have this issue.. Anyone experienced the same thing and have solved it?
    THanks
    Carlos Barros

    Hello Neithan.
Assuming Preferences > Mailbox Behaviors > Move deleted messages to the Trash is ON, does having Store deleted messages on the server ON or OFF make a difference?
Does the problem persist if you take the account offline, then back online (e.g. by means of Mailbox > Go Offline/Online)?
Do you have any Mail plug-ins? In the Finder, go to each of the following folders (if they exist). What do you see there?
    /Library/InputManagers/
    /Library/Mail/Bundles/
    ~/Library/InputManagers/
    ~/Library/Mail/Bundles/
To make accurately reporting that information easier, open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal, type the following command (you can just copy it here and paste it in Terminal), and press <Return>. You can then copy the output of that command from Terminal and paste it in your reply to this post:
    ls -1 /Library/InputManagers /Library/Mail/Bundles ~/Library/InputManagers ~/Library/Mail/Bundles
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.

  • Mail App and IMAP sync issues

I am facing IMAP sync issues with Mail App ver 4.4. I have specified the automatic fetch interval as 1 minute. The problem is the App does not seem to send requests to the server to sync the Inbox folder alone, but it send requests to get STATUS and sync the other folders.
Has anyone else faced similar issues.
    Radha

Not many of us would set the interval to be only 1 minute -- too often for the speed of many connections. Have you tried 5 minutes to see if the behavior continues?

  • Multiple mailboxes when using mail.app with google in IMAP.

    Hello,
I have just started using mail.app with IMAP and my google mail account appears to be in two place. The mail.app has the following interface in the left pane.
MAILBOXES, REMINDERS, RSS and GMAIL all in grey. Below the MAILBOXES i have got the following folders, inbox, sent and trash and below the GMAIL, i have got a replication of the structure in my google account.
which set of folders should i be using?
when i deleet the mail in the MAILBOXES it does not seem to delete it in All Mail folder under GMAIL.
IS the synchronisation between the mails in the mail.app and the google server on a periodic basis. can i force the synchronisation?

Mail works fine with Exchange 2003. This is how our accounts are configured:
    Incoming Mail Server:your exchange server.domain.com.au
    eg. server2.bunnings.com.au
    Username: domain\User alias\Full username
    eg. bunnings\bobs\bob.smith
    SMTP: smtp.bunnings.com.au
    Web Access Server: webmail.bunnings.com.au
You can then setup the LDAP options under the composing tab to get the email list from your Exchange server.
And no i do not work for Bunnings!
    Good Luck!

  • Mail app and .mac integration

I wonder if someone can help. I have previously often drafted email on my home power book using mail app and saved as drafts and then worked on them later when away from home through .mac. This worked perfectly with 10.3 but with 10.4 messages are completely jumbled with html tags.
I'm not the only person finding this problem please see (slightly angry) discussion below:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1097134&#1097134
dot mac support state that it is an mail app support problem, which I now think is correct since testing with mozzila thunder bird works fine.
It seems a real shame that the tight integration between .mac mail and mail app is starting to slip. For clarification i'm composing in plain text in mail.app
Any help would be gratefully accepted, before i dump mail and jump over to thunderbird.
    Chris

    Hi Dave,
you should also ask in the specific .mac forums here.
Edited: Sorry, I see you already did it!

  • Cannot sort emails sent from Mail App and Exchange

When trying to sort emails on Outlook in Windows, lets say by "Flag", emails coming from a mac using mail app and exchange get placed at the top of the list.
Have tried sending emails from the same account via webmail and iphone and they get sorted correctly.
    Anyone has had this problem?

    So, Here's what happens:
    1) Send email from Laptop (Snow Leopard) with Exchange Integration
    2) Send email from iPhone (3.1) with Exchange Integration
In Outlook 2003 sort by flag (neither of these messages are flagged). Any email sent from the Snow Leopard is sorted first in the Unflagged category in Outlook. Any of the email sent from the iPhone is sorted normally.
There's no differences in the headers to cause these to sort differently. The only headers that differ are the Date, Subject/Thread-Topic, Thread-Index, Message-ID, x-ems-stamp. But, in the Message-ID it has the same domain.
Both Snow Leopard and iPhone are configured to use the same Exchange OWA/OWS.

  • Assertion Failures using Mail.app with Exchange 2007...

We have been implementing and migrating our end-users to Exchange 2007. In doing so we found that Mail.app end-users were experiencing Assertion failures in Console.app. They used to cause Mail.app to crash and lose connectivity frequently to the Exchange 2007 server. We made a change to the firewall to allow communication to happen between domain controllers, but haven't been able to determine if this in fact resolved or helped hide the root cause. We seem to be no longer crashing Mail.app or losing connectivity, but the same logs when we would crash/lose connectivity are still happening when you look in Console.app.

We are getting these Assertion Failures for other end-users as well that are using Mail.app and connecting to Exchange 2007 Server. I have wiped my mail.app account and started from fresh and that didn't help. I did it manually as well ensuring that preference files, caches, and passwords related to mail.app, ical.app, and Address Book.app were removed. That did not work. I just went from 10.6.4 to 10.6.5 hoping that would correct the issue, it did not. I even set up on another Mac a baseline Snow Leopard and patched it and then configured my mail account and still got the same errors.
What I am hoping for is not a miracle (Fixing the problem), but being told what these errors mean and if there is any risks to be concerned with. In other words, can I ignore these error messages or should I be concerned? Like I said it was causing us to get the sideways thunderbolt or triangle with an exclamation point and even crashing Mail.app at times. That hasn't happened since we let the all of the domain controllers talk to each other, even though they shouldn't have to.

I echo your hope for someone shedding a light on this. I too am geting Assertion failures, every few days, though without much in the way of crashes.

  • Confusion with mail.app and Gmail using imap

I've had a yahoo.com email address for years, and pay for Mail Plus and POP3, which I frankly don't even use. Now that I've confirmed, however, that I can successfully forward emails from my yahoo box to my new gmail box, I'd like to look into setting up mail.app for the gmail account using imap. Like most people, I access my mail from several places (home & work computers, Touch, and others), and imap makes sense as the right way to go.
Last night I tried to set things up on mail.app on the Mac, and boy was it confusing in terms of the folders, etc. Is there someplace someone can point me for a sort of "beginner's guide to setting up Gmail/imap with mail.app"? Hopefully this "guide" would give me some hints on setting up various rules, etc. that would allow me to have a setup that makes sense: only one copy of emails, sent items in the sent items folder, etc.
One more thing: can I set up Gmail/imap with more than one email client? For example, can I use mail.app at home and Thunderbird on the Windows computer in my office? And how is the creation of new folders (or labels, I guess, as Gmail calls them) on the web handled by mail.app (or Thunderbird)? I'm guessing that a new label created on Gmail on the web doesn't automatically result in a folder being created in mail.app (or Thunderbird), or does it? If this is correct (no folder created in mail.app until I create it on the Mac), is the message that was moved to a folder on the web found in mail.app in the All Messages folder (or whatever it's called)?
Sorry for the basic nature of these questions...this all seems pretty complicated, and I'd like to get it right the first time. Thanks.

BTW Thanks for the "head's up" that GMail now supports IMAP (I've been waiting for it!)
I'm not sure what your confusion is, other than maybe the confusion between how folders and messages work in Outlook versus Apple Mail and IMAP. I've used both, and several other mail programs over the years.
IMAP permits you to have directories which contain message folders. I make the distinction, because Outlook allows you to message folders which contain messages AND other message folders. I believe most implementations of IMAP do not allow messages inside of directories. Thus, a directory looks like a message folder, but it may only contain message folders, and not individual messages.
Now, GMail appears to create message folders for each label you define in GMail, and messages which have several labels appear in each folder. If you copy the folders to your computer, you WILL have multiple copies of those messages, however if you leave them on the server, GMAIL does all the work and you only have one copy of each message.
Special folders in GMail are all located in the directory [Gmail] and include the message folders "All Mail", "Drafts", "Sent Mail", "Spam", "Starred" and "Trash". Notice I say "directory" and not "message folder" for "[Gmail]". That is important.
I cannot attest as to what GMail does when you create a folder from your mail.app client, as I have not done that yet. I would venture a guess that it will define a GMail label and mark any messages you "move" to that folder with that label. The GMail special folder "All Mail" contains all of your mail messages, and is equivalent to selecting "All Mail" when using the web interface.
Your inbox messages will appear in the section with all of your inboxes at the top of your mailbox list. Make sure that you set your preferences to match the recommended preferences for Apple Mail when setting up your GMail account. Otherwise you will end up with duplicates and/or a lot of unnecessary data transfers to your Mac.
Hope this helps. If not, please give a more explicit example of something that doesn't work the way you expect.

Hi I want to attach word documents to yahoo mail app  and some job portals using iPad  I don't know how to attach it can u ppl help me thru this issue

would I be able to "upload" (not sure how else to say it) my existing folders and subfolders containing all my emails so that they are all available on my new IMAP service, while still being available on my Mac?
Not easily, no. There's no direct transfer option between POP and IMAP, especially across email providers. The best you could do would be to forward all of your emails to your new address, although it's not clear that you need to - dropping your sbcglobal.net account doesn't instantly render all your existing mail void - it'll still be in your Mail client, you can still read it, search it, etc., it just won't be on your provider's server.
I have toyed with the idea of getting a MobileMe account. Would that solve my issue/question above?
MobileMe would be viable, especially if you're interested in synching your various iOS devices. It's not free, of course, unlike Yahoo and Gmail, although you've already discounted them...
I have also toyed with purchasing my own URL, but it's hard to tell from the sites (1and1, Namecheap, etc.) if they come with IMAP email accounts included.
Some registrars offer email hosting bundles with a domain registration. This could be a good way to go. GoDaddy, for example, have a email hosting option for domains you register with them.

  • IMAP + Gmail: will mail.app search function work for 100% of messages?

This feels like a dumb question, but haven't found any discussion of this issue on the forum.
I'm considering switching some accounts including Gmail to IMAP. I'm accustomed to having all mail stored locally on mail.app - and frequently search that whole universe (we use mail as an info archive).
The dumb question is what happens to an account that is switched from POP to IMAP? Specifically, when there is no internet connection (often for us, sailing around the world on our yacht).
    Thanks in advance!

Clarification: I forgot to say that I have configured my Gmail IMAP test account in Advanced to "Keep copies of messages for offline viewing".
But it isn't clear whether this applies to every msg on the server, or just to new mail sent/received since the IMAP connection was established.
I am afraid to convert one of our big primary addresses to IMAP until I'm sure that it will work as we require. Again, it isn't clear what happens to say a Gmail account when you switch it from POP to IMAP then back to POP again. What happened to the local copies of the traffic during the IMAP period.
Lastly, can an IMAP account be accessed via POP without messing anything up?

  • Multiple gmail accounts in mail.app via IMAP - how to delete messages

multiple gmail accounts in mail.app via IMAP - how to delete messages so that they are not stored on gmail and not in All Mail therefore either.
i know that dragging messages to the GMail.Trash folder deletes it in Gmail, but doing that for multiple accounts is a hassle!
anybody else struggle with this, solved it?

i have still not figured out a solution to this. very painful - the fact that messages iwill not be using ever again and with large attachments, just sit there in all mails and slow down mail.app for me, fill up search results with stuff i don't want to see and fill up space on the HDD. the attachments as a result often are stored 3-4 times on the HDD!
some geek here must have solved it - come on!

keep on getting double notification  from my default mail app, and gmail app, how do i make google my primary one? so that i dont have to get doulbe notifications  on both apps

This is probably not the answer to all your questions, but I am sure it answers some.
Unlike Word and InDesign, FrameMaker's anchored frames, which hold graphics, "hang" from their insertion points, typically at the end of the paragraph. An anchored frame that follows a paragraph is set to be below the line, the line being the last line in the paragraph. If you turn on View > Text Symbols, you will see a marker that indicates the point from which the anchored frame is hanging.
If the anchored frame is taller than the available space, it is moved to the next page ALONG with that last line. If the paragraph style/tag has a widow/orphan lines number that is more than 1, then that number of lines are also moved to the next page, because the paragraph tag says to keep that many together, EVEN if there is space at the bottom of the previous page.
So, you can set the widow/orphan lines number smaller OR as you have done put a blank line before the anchored frame, which now holds the marker for the anchored frame, and set its font size to 2 pt (the lowest FrameMaker allows) and its line height to zero. This is the standard workaround UNLESS you use the line above the anchored frame as the title/caption of a figure, which is also a typical way of dealing with FrameMaker's ways.
To my knowledge, one cannot change the default of the checked cropped box. Maybe others know of some way to change this.
There is no page break in FrameMaker, hence there is no symbol for it. In the paragraph designer for the paragraph, you set to Start of the paragraph to Top of page. Top of page is FrameMaker's equivalent to a page break. To "remove" a page break, set the Start of the paragraph to Anywhere.
Since you are new to FrameMaker, I suggest reading throught the User Manual that comes with FrameMaker. You will likely find the answers to most of your questions there.
    Hope this helps,
    Van

  • Is there a way to get out of using RSS in mail.app and go back to Safari?

    Hello,
I am a big RSS user and have a pretty huge and unwieldy subscription list. When Leopard shipped, I started using mail.app to read my RSS. I went so far as to delete all of my subscriptions from Safari and rely entirely on mail.app.
As some of you may have noticed from other threads in this forum, RSS in mail.app seems to be not ready for primetime. Specifically, if I leave mail.app open for more than about an hour, the RSS feeds stop updating entirely or update sporadically. It is at this time when I will also invariably find a Database.sqlite3 file in my trash can (which prevents the trash can from being emptied, too).
If I restart mail.app, the feeds start updating again BUT INCLUDE HUNDREDS AND HUNDREDS OF OLD ITEMS. This happens every time I restart mail.app now. I have read all of the other threads that suggest that perhaps dot mac bookmark synching is to blame. This cannot be in my case since I have it all turned off and am not a dot mac member. I have no plugins installed in mail.app or safari.
I have come to the conclusion that RSS in mail.app is too buggy and unreliable to be used and I would like to go back to Safari. The trouble is that when Leopard shipped, the idea of RSS in mail.app made perfect sense to me and I got so enthusiastic and "there's no going back" that I deleted my enormous amount of RSS subscriptions in Safari. Is there anyway to export my RSS subscriptions from mail.app so that I can import them into Safari? I REALLY don't want to try and add them again one by one.

here is a link to macosxhints.com that tells you how to output all of your feed URLs to a terminal window. from there you can cut and paste them into your new feed reader of choice...
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080319094830396
and if you are in the marked for a new reader may i suggest David Watanabe's excellent NewsFire. he had just recently made it totally free as a gift to the macintosh community.
    best of luck.

  • My email account in Mail.app is IMAP, but when I delete emails, they don't delete from other devices connected to the mail server with IMAP. Deleted mail on other devices delete as normal from the server and thus from other devices as normal.

MacBook Pro, late 2011 version. Up to date Mountain Lion.
My email account in the Mail.app is set up as IMAP, but when I delete emails in the Mac Mail App, they are not deleted from the mail clients of the other devices that are connected to the mail server with IMAP. IMAP works perfectly between Windows Outlook 2010, iPad Mail App and Android default mail client. Deleted messages behave correctly, as in delete from one device and the mail is deleted from all devices.
Having just tested in reverse order on the Mac; emails deleted from the email client on Windows, iPad and Android are not deleted in the Mac Mail App.  It appears that the account is behaving like POP rather than IMAP.
Any advice on how to have IMAP work correctly on the MacBook Pro Mail.app?
    Thank you.

Hi Csound1, thanks. The email host is 1and1.co.uk, however, i am going to fess up and make myself look like a plonker now -
the email account in question was set up in Outlook as POP - stupid, stupid, stupid me, wasted an afternoon on this!  I have now changed the Outlook account to IMAP and Mail.app works perfectly - and looks much nicer than Outlook did.  Im in the middle of converting from Windows to a Mac, and still finding my way around the Mac
The lesson learned, never assume - always double  check!  All my other email addresses with 1and1 are all imap, except this one, and it happened to be the first one I set up in the Mail.app. (bows head in disgrace!)
Thank you anyway for attempting to help me!
    Cheers
