Backup iMovie projects to DVD

I would like to back up 1 to 2 hours of a iMovie project to DVD. I am bying Toast that I am told can back up large projects spanning disks, I have Dual layer Lacie burner, What is the Max that I can Span and what volume can I store on a dual layer disk? How comon are the Dual layer disks?

You can fit around 8.5GB on a dual layer disc, which is about 40 minutes of DV video.
You can fit around 4.4GB on a single layer disc, which is about 20 minutes of DV video.
FYI: A dual layer disc costs much more than twice the price of single layer discs.

    Hi
If there is no iDVD on Your Mac (and it's not on newer Macs as Apple discarded it) then You need a program that can do this.
Your Mac can burn CDs and DVDs - BUT DVD as Data-DVDs not as Video-DVDs - they need a program to be encoded and STRUCTURED as such.
    • iDVD is part of the boxed version of iLife'11 and can only be bought outside Apple as on Amazon and e-bay
    • DVD Studio pro - Part of FinalCut Studio Pro bundle - this to has expired and can only be bought second handed. (High price and tough learning Curve - but best ever done.)
    • Roxio Toast™ - Not as elegant as iDVD - but has many other positive additions (I like it as 10-Pro incl BD-component) (now version 11)
    • Burn - only free alternative I know of on internet. Very simple - Just for doing a plain Video-DVD
    Burn http://www.digital-digest.com/software/Burn.html
only You can buy from Apple is
    • FinalCut Pro-X which also can burn to DVD but without any nice themes.
    AppleMan1958
You can also buy Compressor from Apple for $50 US. It will also create DVD and BluRay but without the nice themes.

  • Archiving iMovie Projects to DVD

I'm trying to archive my iMovie projects onto DL DVD+R's. Each project is about 12.5 GB, so they won't fit onto a single DL DVD+R. I've tried using Retrospect, but it fails after spending an hour "configuring" my DVD drive. The only thing I can think of is that it doesn't like non-rewritable media.
This is what I'm really trying to do. I have several tapes I've taken with two camcorders over the last ten years. One is a Sony 8mm analog camcorder and the other is a newer JVC GR-DVL520U MiniDV with FireWire connecter. I want to backup all the movies so that none of my footage is lost in case one of the camcorders fails. The 8mm one is already a bit flakey so I want to be able to get it off of 8mm while I still can.
I was planning on creating a viewable copy of each tape, record it onto DVD and then put that DVD in my safe deposit box. I would like to retain as much of the original quality/information as I can (I'm anal that way), so I figured that saving the iMovie project itself, in addition to a regular DVD burn, would be the best bet. Most posts mention storing projects on an external harddrive, but since I'm trying to keep my original footage safe, DVD seems like the best way.
I guess I really have two questions. The first is, do I gain anything by keeping the original iMovie project? My understanding is that iMovie will compress the imported video, resulting in some detail loss from what was on tape. (With the advent of HD TV this may be a bigger deal than it is now).
My second question is, how do I backup 12.5 GB iMovie projects? As I mentioned earlier, it doesn't seem to like my drive, or at least the non-rewritable media I'm using (Memorex DL DVD+R). I also tried using a CD-R, but it gave the same error while trying to "configure" the DVD drive.
Thank you advance and sorry about the long-winded post.
    Cheers,
    Rey

A waste of time and blank DVD's.
Export to "tape" (back to the camera with a blank tape inserted). Cheap, real time and easy to do.
"Copy" your iMovie Project to external Firewire HD. Cheap (comparatively), reliable and drag and drop easy.
A simple scratch on one of your backed up DVD's could render it useless. Hard to store "large" Project files onto DVD media.
No difference in the data on a DVD and the same data on a hard drive. Saving the entire iMovie Project as "data" would allow you to "Open iMovie Project" in iMovie and continue editing as if you left it yesterday.
Better to concentrate on saving the original "capture" in .dv format. Export entire movies back to tape. Export "clips" as QuickTime (Full Quality). These .dv files can be burned to DVD as "data". Just try and keep the file size under the size of the media. DV Stream is 13 GB per hour so you would need 3 DVD's to burn it.
Backup (.Mac members get it) can be used on "large" files and is smart enough to allow "spanning" multiple discs so your large project could fit in your safety deposit box.

  • How do I put an iMovie project on DVD?  Cannot find iDVD...

I'm new to Mac.  I created a project in iMovie.  When I tried to share it to iDVD, it says cannot find iDVD.  How do I write a movie project to DVD?

It's now confirmed that iWeb and iDVD have been discontinued by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.
HOWEVER, the iLife 11 boxed version that is still currently available at the online Apple Store (Store button at the top of the page) and those copies still on the shelves of retailers will include iWeb and iDVD.
You might try the approach that Ziatron gives in his post in this  topic to obtain a free copy: New Macbook Pro w/iLife - No iDVD: Apple Support Communities. If you're unsuccessful you can purchase the iLife disk from the link above.

  • IMovie project to DVD without iDVD?

I'm a total newbie to iMovie and iDVD (using v. 4 of both). I'm trying to help my son get a simple 3-minute iMovie project onto a DVD for a school project. Teacher will play the DVD on a TV for whole class. My question is do I have to go through iDVD to burn a DVD that will play on a TV? Is there anyway to "Share" it straight out of iMovie since I don't need any fancy openings etc.?
To let you know what I've already tried: I "shared" the project out of iMovie as a Full Quality DV and then burned that to a DV+R disk just using the disk utility. My home DVD player said "error: incompatible disk". After reading these forums I see a DVD-R is recommended, and it's better to burn through Toast (I have v.6). If I make those two changes will I be successful?
Thanks for any help for a harried mom.

    Hi LeeAnn,
    welcome to the  board
    as Matthew and Beverly wrote:
you need an "author" tool to create a videoDVD...
what you've done with Disk Utility is a dataDVD - which is, for sure, not readable for a DVDstandalone... (it is not a computer... just a player)
    * in iDVD (which is an authoring, encoding and burning app) you can modify the themes down to the ground - in result, you are able to create a black screen with a single word "start"... not-fancy enough?
    * Toast allows also authoring, but has not as many options as iDVD to create non-themes dvds.... depending on the Toast version, you can create autostart-dvds - that is without any menu... (you can accomplishh that with iDVD5/6...)
    * there are some free tools on the market for creating DVDs, but this is a painstaking process... not recommended for the average user...
    I would use iDVD...

  • How do I burn a completed iMovie project to dvd

How do i burn a dvd of my completed imovie project?

In addition to John's suggestions this is what I was referring to. Use a template such as this one:
Select the button that's on the menu and delete it
Make a simple black graphic in any basic graphics application and fill it with black. Just drag the graphic into the menu to replace the background.
In map view place your video in the first play box

If you don't mind a third-party software, you can try the DVD Creator to burn any kind of videos to DVD with the ability to play on DVD player~~The process is really easy and you can DIY the DVD menu if you like. (offer the guide to you!)

To burn a DVD with iDVD from the latest version of iMovie, you have to export the movie using the Export button and select 480p as the size. Open iDVD and start a new project, then drag that exported movie file into the iDVD menu window, avoiding any drop zones you see.

  • Saving an imovie project to DVD that can later be re-edited?

I have many imovie jobs saved on 4 external hard drives. Problem is I am running out of space. Is there any way to save a completed imovie project onto a DVD that can still be fully edited?
    Thanks, Beth

Yes, you can always save files onto a DVD as a data disk using Disk Utility or something like Toast to burn the DVD. Of course since projects (video footage) tends to be a lot larger than a DVD blank, you might have to manually break up the project onto several DVDs, then reimport them later rebuilding that project folder again as it was.

  • Buring 12GB iMovie Project, to DVD.

I've yet to decide which external hard drive to buy, and in a few days, i'm going to do a full system restore (to clear out junk i dont need). Anyways, i have a few iMovie projects, most of which are over 12GB.
Is there a way to 'split' the project between a few DVD's, and that put it back on my mac after the restore?
    *nathan

I have a Mac Mini and and iBook, and decided to buy an external HD. I shopped around and bought the Maxtor Extreme 300 GB USB2 drive. It works great! I do all my video editing on it, and it is super fast. Just as fast as my other firewire drive. I would highly recommend it. Just transfer your iMovie container files to the drive (contains all your media, etc) and then restore it to you fresh computer.

  • Imovie project to dvd issues

I have a bunch of home movies that I wan't to burn to a dvd.  I've been using imovie to turn the edited videos into an imovie project.  I then send the project to the theater side of imovie and theater turns it into a movie but then that's it.  I've tried sharing it to a file, itunes, etc. but to no avail.  I try various software but when I try to import of select the project, it's greyed out an I can't select it.  I tried to find idvd because I've read that it will work but all I can find are the updates for idvd and not the software itself.  Quicktime won't even open it and I can't share it to quicktime because that's not an option.  I kept hearing how easy Apple was supposed to be and so far I'm not impressed.  Any thoughts out there?

To create a video DVD from an iMovie project you need iDVD.
Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac? How do I get it and how do I install it?

Old Toad’s recommended installation method for copying iDVD from another Mac:
1 - copy your current iDVD application from the old Mac to the Applications folder of the new Mac. The latest version available is 7.1.2.  If you don't have that versoin go to the Apple Downloads site and download the iDVD 7.1.2 updater and run it on your current iDVD application.
2 - copy the iDVD folder that resides in the old Mac's HD/Library/Application Support folder to the same folder on your new Mac.
To burn a DVD with iDVD from the latest version of iMovie, you have to export the movie using the Export button and select 480p as the size. Open iDVD and start a new project, then drag that exported movie file into the iDVD menu window, avoiding any drop zones you see.
