Backup Info

I have read the forums and searched for info. I found some info and got a bit confused for a variety of reasons, so I'm asking here for input.
I have 750GB of data I need to backup. I can get the data to an external 1TB firewire RAID 0+1 drive using Retrospect which has generally worked well for me. I am always able to recover data as needed. Might not be the fastest solution, yet it works. My big question is what offsite data backup should I use? I am looking for anyone that has any experience with tape backup or any other solution. My budget is limited, so I'm looking for the most bang for the buck. I want a reliable, easy solution at a reasonable cost for getting my data offsite.
Any input is greatly appreciated.

Hi Leverett Litz-
With thrift in mind, a couple of thought come to mind.
I personally keep about that much data on an external FW drive that I just unplug and take to another physical location and lock away in a fireproof safe. In your case you may want to consider a couple of drives in this rotation, take Friday's backup drive home and lock it up and bring the previous week's drive that was in the safe back to work and so on with the rotation.
It is still wise to have a backup that is with the machine in case you need it.
Thought number two involves a headless Mini, connected to the necessary number of FireWire drives, sitting at another physical location and doing nothing more than receiving the nightly backup via a script or retrospect over the internet.

  • HT201269 I have an IPhone 4 that turns off. When I plug the phone into a outlet, it says to connect to iTunes. But my phone doesn't connect. I need to backup info to sync to a new iPhone. Is there another way to get the info from the old one?

I have an IPhone 4 that turns off on its own. When I plug the phone into an outlet, it says to connect to iTunes. When i connect my phone to itunes, the screen displays the apple icon and doesn't connect to iTunes.  I need to backup info on this phone so I can apply my back up to a new iPhone. Is there any another way i can do this? My older phone will not show it's connected to iTunes. I used iCloud on the phone with problems, but I didn't back up all the info thru iCloud. Is there another way to back up?

Sounds like your phone is in recovery mode.  In this case, all data on it is gone.  There's nothing to back up.

  • How do I retrieve my backup info after my phone is stolen

how do I retrieve my backup info after phone is stolen

    What info?
You should be syncing calendars and contacts with your computer regularly.  They will be in whatever program that you sync.
You should be importing all pics talen with iphone to your computer regularly as you would with any digital camera.  They will be wherever you put them.
You should be transferring any itunes purchases made on your iphone to your computer regularly.  They should be in itunes.
You can redownload some itunes purchases in some countries:

  • Expire log backup info

Looking at m_backup_catalog* views for a monitoring solution for backups I realized that there is no way to expire backup information from the catalog.
After approx 6 months of use I see 60K entries in m_backup_catalog, most of course log backups. With a scale out solution this would be multiplied with amount of hosts AFAIR, and could reach a million+ log backups a year.
Is there truly no expiration command for backup history, or a parameter? Reading through sql guide, backup guide, admin guide and monitoring views guide among others I see nothing on that subject. Perhaps I'm just missing something obvious and there is a way to expire backup info.

    Hi Robert,
nice to see you're active in the HANA field :-)
Right now (that is SPS4) there is no supported way to shorten the backup history/catalog.
But afaik there will likelyl be an official feature for that in later versions.
For now, this doesn't pose any problem and should this turn out to become one with larger scale-out systems running OLTP traffic, then this will of course be changed.
BTW: you reported roughly 10K catalog entries per month and node.
For a 5 node cluster - that means it'll take 20 months to reach the million lines.
And if it does - so what?
    cheers,
    Lars

  • How to access backup info on Mac

    Hi there,
I was wondering if anyone could help me about a backup situation.  I backed up my iPhone 4S on my iTune for the second time.  Then I wanted to retrieve all the previous backup (the info before I backed up the 2nd time) and clicked on 'restore backup' on iTune.  I checked my iPhone 4S and all the info before I backed up the 2nd time ARE GONE!  Even some apps I installed after the 1st backup and before the 2nd backup are gone as well!  How can I retrieve all the info between the 1st backup and the 2nd backup?
Thanks to anyone who can answer this in advance!!!

You need to download the latest 11.1- Not yet available in software update only here: iTunes download page- http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Everything is very obvious from there. Just click the + and type what you want.

  • After backup, computer hung - conflicting backup info

Just bought the time capsule/time machine disk on Saturday. Mac pro desktop, connected via internet. Backed it up Tues night. After the first backup (I left it overnight), the "busy basketball" was visible, wold not go away, and my machine would not respond to anything (not even cmd-opt-esc). According to the time machine preferences screen, which was still up, the backup was complete. The screen said it was backing up the 275 GB.
So I restarted the computer manually (pushed the button, shut it off, pushed the button to restart.). About 275 GB and 800,000 files were supposed to be backed up. According to time machine buddy, the last message indicated that it copied only 68 GB and 253 files, and indicated that "status of backup unknown". If I go "into" the time machine, the finder showing the backup db file indicates that 275 GB of space has been used in the backup disk. Perhaps this space has only been reserved but not actually used?
This is obviously an amateur product. How can I tell what's actually been backed up? I have a really bad feeling about this.

Were you doing the initial backup via Ethernet? That's highly recommended.
According to the time machine preferences screen, which was still up, the backup was complete.
Do you mean it showed the appropriate timestamp in *Latest Backup?*
What does it show now? If there's a timestamp there, look at your backup via Time Machine. Click the Time Machine icon in your Dock, or select +Enter Time Machine+ from the TM icon in your menubar.

That's likely because of the forced power-off; the later messages didn't get moved into the log files on disk.

If there's no *Latest Backup* date on the Preferences window, the backup failed; the 275 GB is in an ".inProgress" package, not in the forum of a completed backup.
Without the logs, there's probably no way to tell why it failed. If the Prefs window says Failed, see #C2 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).

No, an amateur user. The documentation leaves a lot to be desired, but it works fine for millions of folks.
How can I tell what's actually been backed up? I have a really bad feeling about this.
If the backup didn't complete, and there's no message on the Preferences window, connect via Ethernet if you haven't already. Start a new backup (select +Back Up Now+ from the TM icon in your menubar, or by right-clicking the TM icon in your Dock).
Time Machine will "recover" the failed backup. That will probably take a long time, even via Ethernet.
If it fails, note the message it sends, and see #C2 in Troubleshooting.
If it seems to hang, for a long time, and won't cancel, see #D6 there.
While it's running, you might want to review the [Time Machine Tutorial|http://www.apple.com/findouthow/mac/#timemachinebasics] and perhaps browse [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).

  • Setting that shows most recent backup info?

Where on the iPhone 4s do I look to see the date that the iphone was last backed up?
    Thanks!

You should be able to view your latest backup under either iCloud or iTunes Wi-Fi Sync. To see the backup under iCloud, go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup. It should say the date and time of the latest backup to iCloud. If you don't have or use iCloud, sync your phone to iTunes and then go to Settings>General>iTunes Wi-Fi Sync. It should say the date and time of the latest sync (and if you backed it up, the backup) to iTunes. Hope this helps!

  • Has anyone noticed blank 'Latest Backup' info after the 10.5.8 update?

I notice this in both Time Machine System Preferences and under the top menu TM icon. Now, I have to enter Time Machine to determine the last backup time.
    Just checking in.

    No, not on this machine.
I did notice that backup after updating to 10.5.8 was quite sizeable though.

  • V$view or any other view to check the backup info

    Hello,
Is there any v$view or dba_ views which gives the information on RMAN backups that has happened (Incremental or complete) if incremental what level (0, 1, 2) etc.?
    Jek

    Hi,
    Hello,
Is there any v$view or dba_ views which gives the information on RMAN backups that has happened (Incremental or complete) if incremental what level (0, 1, 2) etc.?
Jek1) V$RMAN_OUTPUT - This is an in-memory view of the messages reported by RMAN holding a maximum of 32767 rows. Since this information is not recorded in the controlfile it is lost on instance restart.
    2) V$RMAN_STATUS - This view displays progress and status information for in-progress and complete RMAN jobs. The information for the in-progress jobs is memory only, while the complete job information comes from the controlfile.
    3) V$BACKUP_FILES - This view display information about RMAN image copies, backupsets and archived logs, similar to the information listed by the RMAN commands LIST BACKUP and LIST COPY. This view relies on the DBMS_RCVMAN.SETDATABASE procedure being run to set the database.

  • Multiple backups of same iPhone on one computer possible?

Moved this over here from a different area in hopes of getting more eyeballs on it.
Does anyone know if it is possible to have multiple backups of the same iPhone on your computer? I have tried changing the name of the phone (ex. my_iPhone, myiPhoneA) but it still only lists one phone (the most recent name) in the "iPhones backed up on this computer" list in itunes. If anyone has been able to do this, or just knows it could be done, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Also, does anyone know where the computer actually stores the backup info. Assuming I could overwrite an existing backup file with them, being able to navigate to and save those files would allow me to do pretty much what i am looking to.
    thanks,
    christian

Yes. It's possible to have more than one backup of your iPhone on your computer. The backup is stored in this folder: Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup in your users profile. You have to disconnect your iPhone, navigate to the folder, move that folder to another part of your computer, and then plug your iPhone back in. This should create another backup in that folder. Then if you add the folder that you moved back in. You'll have two different backups. This is a link to the article where I got this info from. It also has the other places backups are kept on your computer.

  • How do I get iCloud Backup Options to display the list of apps on my iPad?  It just spins forever.

I'm trying to set up iCloud backups for my iPad.  I go into Manage Storage, selet my iPad from my list of iCloud enabled devices and then I get the Backup Info screen.  Its supposed to list all of my applications so I can turn on/off backups on an app by app basis.  Unfortunately it just spins forever and the Backup Options list never populates.
This works fine in my iPhone 4s, but not on my iPad.
I don't want to run a backup without doing this since I have a lot of data in a couple of apps and I don't want those backed up.
Is this an iOS bug on the iPad?

Eventually the Settings app just crashes while waiting for the Backup Options list to populate.
When I try an actual backup of my iPad to iCloud it spins for a while and then crashes.
I only want to backup up a handful of my apps to iCloud but right now I can't even get it to show me the list of apps to turn on/off.
