Backup iphone, how to backup iphone and not lose everything?

Since so much is at stake, songs, pictures etc., I was trying to figure out how to perform an update to my iPhone from 4.1. I see the update instructions, but how do I not lose everything?

- Although the first step of an update is iTunes making a backup, make one yourself too. See:
iOS: How to back up
- Make sure that all of your synced media is in your iTunes library (on computer for synced photos) since synced media is not included in the backup.
- Connect the iPod to the computer and update via iTunes.

  • How to reinstall iTunes and not lose everything from external drive.

I had to reformat my hard drive.  All my iTunes files were (and still are) on an external drive.
When I download the latest version of iTunes, I installed and set up my preferences to change the location of iTunes Media File to External Drive J:\iTunes\iTunes Music.
When iTunes installs, it creates files and folders in C:\Users\Userxyz\Music\itunes
So....Because iTunes didn't show any of my music, playlists, apps, etc. and because I had changed where to keep media files,
I selected the "Add Folder to Library" option
iTunes successfully displays all the music from this external drive and left the music files where they were.
But....it also copied all of this music to a folder on my desktop called "Copy of Itunes".  Now, I have 3 *itl and "xlm files.  One on External Drive J, another in Music\iTunes on Drive C, and a 2nd in Copy of iTunes on the desktop.
Missing from iTunes are my purchases.  All apps, purchased and free.  Playlists.
I have a folder "Mobile Applications"  on the external drive and in Copy of iTunes, but both are empty.
I wonder if I already lost my purchases.
I would also like to keep my files on an external drive because I don't have enough space to keep iTunes on my main drive.
    I also use Vista.....
I hope someone can help.  This is all very confusing

When you say all of your iTunes files were on the external drive, do you mean all, or only the stuff that's inside the red outline below. The most important part of your library is the database file iTunes Library.itl which holds the records of your playlists, ratings and all other data that doesn't get stored in tags.
    Typical layout of iTunes folders:
When the media folder is inside the main iTunes folder as shown above then the library is portable, and if the library is relocated to an external drive it will survive a wipe of the internal drive. However most users typically split their library when they find they are running out of room on the internal drive by choosing a new locaton for the media folder and then consolidating.
If this is what you have done, and you don't have a backup of the library files, the iTunes Library.itl file in particicular, then your old library is lost forever. If you do have the files then it may be possible to get the right library file reconnected to the media provided you haven't been moving things around randomly.
You can check each of the .itl files that you have on your computer in turn using the hold-down-shift-when-starting-iTunes method. If one of these has the correct playlists, and the drive letter of the external drive is the same as before, then it should all work.

  • Lost iTunes on my computer. is there a way i can get it back and not lose everything if i sync my phone?

  • How do I upload pictures from my iphone to a new computer and not lose them

My laptop crashed so I bought a new computer and iTunes says if I sync my pictures they'll be replaced with what's on the new computer. There are no pictures on the new computer.  So how do I get them off my phone and not lose them too?

Click here and follow the instructions. Once the photos are on your computer, put a copy of them onto an external drive.

  • How do I sync my iPhone to a new computer and not erase everything?

I have this issue every time I buy a new computer and can never remember how to do this...
Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Here's an article in line with your request: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
It's called "iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer".

  • Can I connect my new touch on my MacOS to the iTunes apple id same as other touch I'm still using and not lose everything, and how?

    Hi,
I have a Ipod Touch that I have an apple ID for and have set up on my MAC OS with Itunes and all that jazz.
I however fully admit I know very little about properly using Itunes especially when I get new Ipods. Case and Point = I have 6 different Ipod versions and have never known how to transfer the music from any on of them to a new one or add it to one library because one time when plugging in a Ipod nano I lost everything off my other ipod nano and my library and it all just didn't work out well.
Now I have another Ipod Touch. I learned that you should use the same apple id for a new Ipod-thats something new I didn't know. The others are under Id's and emails I don't even remember honestly. Not sure how I'll ever fix that.
I've read about 2 user accounts. Get stuck with something about a key on my mac wanting authorization when I had two accounts, so thats just out.
I've read about 2 libraries, but do not really understand the process & have not gotten anywhere with the pressing option while opening ITunes-Do I have to have my second touch plugged in first? That doesn't seem right.
My Main question, well, one of em: I set up the second touch with same Apple ID but I have not attached to my Mac Because I am afraid of whatever may happen. So: Will my Mac say "Hey, what's this Second ipod and what's your purpose kinda deal?" or Will it replace my other ipod and wipe it blank, my Mac then saying some other choice words to me about the attempt of two ipods. . .?
So-My Goal here: When I open ITunes or it opens when connected to one of the touches (at this point I've lost hope on the other ipods for now) how do I make it so that under devices it shows the names of Two Different Ipods-I did name them differently if that matters. And How then do I make the Mac know which touch I connect or will it just Know by the powers that be? And How Can I Split some of the data from my 1st touch to my 2nd touch? And Add new data to one or the other or both.
My No Logic behind it Easy idea I wonder of:   Can I just connect the new Blank touch in to my mac that already has a touch with Data on it, both under the same email and apple id, and have nothing go wrong? Will my Mac set it up like a new ipod and list it as a new one under devices ? ? Then Ask another question on how to transfer some of my data from one to the other in another Incredibly Long post, such as this?
Sharing between the two (and maybe the others later one):  I only have 1 MAC so the whole home share doesn't seem to help me here. But I've read of familys-whole families!-having multiple ipod users, I'm guessing under the same apple ID? ? ? I don't really know, anyway, and they can sync the data from one area, or different libraries for each. HOW? And what's best for me to do, or rather, since you see how little I understand of this entire process, which method do you think I can actually complete without messing something or everything up?:)
Any help here would be great. I sincerely apologize if this is a repeat and I just don't get the other questions or answers. I'd just really like to figure this out so that my 6 other Ipods from past years with complete music libraries and forever unseen photos -once they had a camera-yeah, it goes back that far . . . It'd be nice to actually have all that back, or at least accessible without fear that it'll all disappear. What would happen if I connnected an Ipod nano that I think has another apple ID to my MAC? Would Itunes like fizz out and banish my touch or something? Yeah, I need help. I can use em. . .does not mean you have to be smarter than the device apparently. Well, its Itunes that really just doesn't get along with me or my devices I think. . .Thank you for any ideas on simplifying this all for me.

Just connect the new iPod to your computer and setup the iPod via iTunes (instead of via wifi).

  • Since upgrading to Firefox 4 I have had nothing but trouble. How do I downgrade and not lose my bookmarks? Or just downgrade without uninstalling Firefox?

It won't load properly, freezes, crashes unexpectedly, won't pull up PDF files from web sites and has issues running with hotmail. I've used Firefox for years and have never had this kind of problem. How do I downgrade to an older version? The new version 4 is obviously not ready to run and is riddled with problems.

I have to agree, fixing something that was working fine and replacing it with the new crap has led me to switch browsers.BIG FAIL MOZILLA
Why do people do this shit.
Turn off updating to keep your good working version or you will be forced to use the new version that is missing some well used features.

  • I had a PC, it crashed, now I own a macbook, how do I sync my ipod to my mac and not lose everything purchased on both the itouch AND the old PC

I transfered all purchased files from the ipod to the mac, but its only transferring purchases that I made directly from the itouch. I backed up my pc to a WD external HD, BUT it has to be formated to a Mac in order for it to be read by a Mac which obviously won't work because everything will be deleted from the HD in the reformat. I purchased a LOT of my music through Itunes and/or amazon. I don't care so much about the games, but if I lost all the music I have it would definitely be hundreds of dollars and obviously that's way unacceptable. PLEASE HELP!!!

You can redownload most iTunes purchases again via iCloud.  See this article for more details.
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
I'm guessing your external HD is formatted as NTFS?  You can add the capability for your Mac to read/write to NTFS formatted drives using additional software. Here is are a few possibilities.

  • How do I update new pc to sync and not lose iPhone data?

set up old computer to sync with iPhone and updated to ios 5, as well.  now i have a new pc and want to sync using it and not lose data in iPhone. Also when i tried to update to new version of ios 5, message said sp,e data would be lost.
want to delete previous computer and add new computer as one to sync with.  Appreciate any help....

To add on to what roaminggnome said, you especially need to copy over these2  folders:
    C:\Users\(username)\Music\iTunes
This holds all the itunes library content (actual music, podcast, & movie files) plust the itunes library database file (iTunes Library.itl) that holds ratings & playcounts.
    C:\Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
This has the app data you need for your iPhone.
Copy everything over and make sure itunes plays a few songs, then sync your iphone and use it a bit before you get rid of the old PC. Remember to deauthorize your old PC before you get rid of it.

Not sure what to tell you about the update to ios 5. Is that what failed, or did the iphone backup fail?
I would backup my iphone first before I updated it to ios 5.

  • Backup itouch on another mac and not lose whats on itouch when sync

backup itouch on another mac and not lose whats on itouch when sync

Make sure your new Mac is authorized in iTunes. Disable autosync in itunes, connect your ipod, right click on it in the device list and choose backup.
This will save data, pictures and settings to itunes. See what's included in this backup here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
Transfer your purchases the same way to copy all apps and bought media from the Store to your computer.
Set up at least one contact and event on your new Mac, to be able the merge your calendars and contacts after your ipod got wiped during the first sync.
The rest of the data can be restored from the backup you made.
    Restoring: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.
There is 3rd party software out there, but not supported by Apple, see this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2013615&tstart=0

I bought an Iphone 4S 16Gb from softbank - Japan. I would like to buy an active code for my Iphone, how can I do and where can I buy?

That iPhone is useable only on the softbank network. Softbank does not
unlock iPhones for use on other networks. Sell that iPhone to someone who
can use it on Softbank and use the money to buy an iPhone that will work
    with your wireless provider.

Thank you again for all of your help!! I really appreciate it!
I think I am following -- I was able to upload to my iPhoto and all photos and videos are there that is a plus! I tried to create an Event in my iPhoto and put all of my photos in that event but for some reason, now my iTunes it not recognizing that Event in my iPhoto. It is not allowing me to import just that event at the moment but I may be doing something wrong. At least all of my pics and vids are in iPhoto so that is a plus and I know they are at least saved somewhere. Just for some reason, my iTunes it not locating the event that I created with only those photos.
Thank you for letting me know about my contacts! How do I know if I have the contacts app?
Also, I had no clue that my iCloud could be backed up via cellular data! However, is this a new feature with the most updated iOS?? Unforutnatly I am like 2 iOS updates behind because I don't have enough storage on my phone. I still get the notification that my phone needs to be plugged in and connected to wifi in order to back up to the cloud :-(
How can I sync using USB? Right now when i click on the info tab for my iPhone in my iTunes this is the answer that I get -- I am a little unclear as to what it means.
    Sync Contacts:
Your contacts are being synced with you iPhone over the air from iCloud. Over-the-air sync settings can be changed on you iPhone
