Backup is slow! HOURS LONG! What do I need to do?

Yes, I have tried to find the answer using the search forum function, but couldn't find what I could understand. Ever since I updated to the latest iTunes and iPhone software, my backups are hours long. I don't even want to sync my phone, but I need to for pictures and such. What do I need to do, and can you make it easy enough for someone not as tech savvy to understand? Thanks in advance. This is frustrating.

Hey guys
Here's what to do:
Attempt to troubleshoot the problem by removing the Facebook app. Deleting the Facebook app WILL NOT delete your personal Facebook settings or account, so no worries. If deleting it does not help, you can easily download it once more via the App Store for free. If you don't know how to delete the app, follow these instructions:
Touch and hold down any icon in your iPhone on the home page. Let go once you see the icons shaking. Navigate to the Facebook icon and click the X that appears on the top left of the icon. This will ask you if you want to delete the app. Click delete and another window will come up asking you to rate the app. Rate it if you want or cancel it. This will delete the app from the phone.
Reboot the phone by holding the home button+lock button until the phone shuts down and you see the Apple logo, approximately 10 seconds more or less. Turn on the computer and open iTunes (reboot the computer if already on in order to clear the memory) Let it boot up, then re-sync the phone with the computer.
If this does not solve the problem, delete the backup from iTunes:
In the iTunes window, navigate to the Edit drop down menu on the top left of the iTunes window. Click preferences, then navigate to the Devices tab. Under the tab, you should see the history of devices that have been backed up on your computer. Delete your iPhone's backup by clicking the name of your phone and click "Delete Backup" that appears underneath the list. In the dialog box that opens, click "Delete Backup" once more.
Once finished, right click your iPhone on the side bar under the devices drop down menu. Click backup. This will back your device up, so wait until it finishes. If this does not solve your problem, I would recommend either restoring your iPhone or reinstalling iTunes, or both.
** (before restoring your iPhone, back up the device (wait until finished, may take hours as you said) and restore with the backup. If it still takes hours, restore the iPhone WITHOUT the backup, meaning restore it as a NEW iPhone.)
Furthermore, if there is still an issue after reinstalling iTunes AND restoring your iPhone (I would imagine there shouldn't be), then I would make an appointment at your local Apple store with a "Genius": http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ <--Schedule an appointment here.
If there are any problems with my instructions or you are stuck, don't be afraid to ask. Report back here with your news.
Good luck =]

My iPad will not update apps.  It states it is installing but if never completes the installation this has been going on for more than 24 hours. What do I need to do?

    Try a reset:
    1. Hold the Sleep and Home button down (together) for about 10 seconds
    2. Until you see the Apple logo (very important)

  • 2.01 Did not fix long backup bug for me.  What do I need to do?

    Hi,
The update has not corrected the long backup time bug for me. Started a backup 30 mins ago and based on the progress bar it will run for at least another 2.5 hours. I don't understand how it can take that long to backup less than 8GB of information. Do I need to change a setting or delete old iTunes backup files to get this process working correctly. Most of the other bugs I encountered with version 2.0 seem to be resolved but this backup bug is a time waster. Do I need to take the phone and my mac to the Apple store and have them look at it?
    Thanks,
    D

You can cancel the backup process by hitting the x in the progress window and it will go directly to the sync if it is taking it too long.

The iMac gets slower the longer I use the Internet - to the point that it takes several seconds for each typed character to appear.  This is very noticeable with the online browser game Forge of Empires.  But, it happens even if not logged on to that game.
Turning the iMac off and restarting it brings it back to what seems like full speed for an hour or so.  Then, it starts to noticeably slow down again.

1st thing : from my point of view upgrade your mac os to latest version.
(their is mac os x mavericks from apple its free for upgrade so download it and install it.)
2nd thing : then upgrade your all browser plugins to latest version.
3rd thing : and use ccleaner to keep clean your mac from junk data or other unuseable data that are created.
4th thing : verify and repair your disk permissions with the use of disk utility or ccleaner
i am sure your computer recover speed.

So, in iTunes, when you look at the shuffle's content (in the sidebar) and click on the playlist under the shuffle, over to the right, the songs are in your desired order, correct?  Where do you look, or what do you do, that indicates the playlists are in alphabetical order?  Are you saying that when you play the songs while using the shuffle, they play in alphabetical order?
If so, when you listen to the songs on the shuffle, are you using the playlist, or are you using the All Songs list? If you are in the default All Songs list, with the shuffle's power switch set to play-in-order (the middle position), the songs play alphabetically, I believe.
The 3rd gen shuffle uses VoiceOver.  If you are in the All Songs list, you need to use VoiceOver to switch to the playlist (see manual linked below for details).  When you are in the playlist (with the shuffle's power switch set to play-in-order), then the songs should play in playlist order.
There are more details in the manual for the 3rd gen shuffle, which is online here
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/iPod_shuffle_3rdGen_UG.pdf
See page 22 for the section about setting up and using VoiceOver.  The part about switching playlists starts on page 23 (Using the Playlist Menu).

I have been using a WD Passport with Time Machine on my iMac.  Since I upgraded to Mavericks, the backup no longer works.  What do I need to do?
I assume that upgrading the WD SmartWare is irrelevant as it is not being used.  Should I upgrade just as a precaution?
One complication is that I have renamed my user since the last time I backed up.

the problem is with the WD Passport drives.   I also have one, and since upgrading to 10.9 I can no longer use mine either.  See if this solution works for you: https://discussions.apple.com/message/23943103#23943103

I have edited a movie in Final Cut Pro and the video has been smooth all the time.
Now, when the one hour long movie is ready the video seem to paus every 5 sec (only for half a second). It does it all the way through the movies.
What is wrong? All the sudden.

    We need info, info, info!
    What version of FCP X?
Did you render? what are the project specs? do you use many compound clips? how much ram, hard drive space, how is the hard drive connected?
It looks like your mac can't keep up. Maybe the bottleneck is the hard drive, or something else.
Try exporting a master file and see if the video is ok.
Also, keep Activity Monitor open and see how much memory pressure you've got.

Maybe there is a file that is blocked somewhere. You should retry the process, however under following conditions:
    - first restart the computer and login with your account
    - then eliminate as many startup applications and utilities as possible
    - clean the desktop (put files in "My Documents", etc...)
    - check powersaving settings, and remove any "turn off hard disk" options (use maximum performance)
    - restart the computer again
    - launch the migration tool, nothing else

  • What happens if your DVD project is over 1 hour long

I know that to get the highest quality image on your DVD that your project should be 1 hour. What happens if your project is longer than that? let's say one hour ane 10 minutes for example. Will Encore still pop out a DVD only with lower quality images?

    Hi Terry.
Of course it won't, although I understand where your concerns come from - blame marketing speak for this!.
It's basically nonsense - Hollywood have been outputting films on DVD running well past the 1 hour mark for over a decade now.
What determines the final image quality on any DVD has much, much more going on than simple running time.
Initially, you should start with the highest quality assets available to you. A lot of the time, this will be SD Video - Standard Definition Video - at 720x480 pixels if in NTSC regions, or 720x576 in PAL regions. If it is higher than this, it is a form of High(er) Definition video. That would introduce our first variable, as high definition source material needs to be correctly scaled or reduced in resolution to SD.
Then it needs to be transcoded into a DVD compliant compressed data format called MPEG-2, standing for the Motion Picture Experts Group, although some wags would claim it really stads for "moving pictures by educated guesswork". There are many encoders out there, and some are frankly better than others at all settings, whilst others work well in some cases but not in others. It's a bit of a minefield. Encore's MainConcept encoder is pretty good.
Quality here depends on the available bitrate, which depends on running time divided by available disc space, with added complexity caused by quality of source, quality of encoder & rapidity of motion in the source.
Basically, the more action in the film (or explosions, fires - anything difficult to encode because of fast motion etc) the more bits that section will need so another trick is using VBR or CBR - Variable bitrate will use fewer bits when it can in order to use more when it has to. VBR will always vary the bitrate to maintain quality. CBR uses the same number of bits, regardless of content, and will only ever vary the quality or (in best case scenario) waste disc space.
If using Dolby Digital Audio, which is 0.192kbps for stereo, this leaves you with up to 9,500kbps for film.
A DVD9 has 65,000 avalable MegaBits for use (after subtracting an overhead) so a 3 hour film would run for 10,800 seconds.
Audio MegaBits used we cancalculate as it is a fixed bitrate, so 0.192 x 10,800 = 2073.6MegaBits.
    65,000 - 2073.6 = 62926.4 MegaBits remaining
This gives you a video bitrate of 62926.4/10800 = 5.83Mbps, or 5,830kbps for your video bitrate. That's almost 6Mbps, and a lot of hollywood come in at less than this. a 2-pass VBR would be your best fit, with the minimum at 2,000, the maximum at 6,000 and the target at 5,000 (Some encoders cheat here and set the maximum internaly to the spec limits - I do not recommend trying this in settings though).
A well-encoded film at an average bitrate of 5,000 kbps is not going to look terrible by any stretch although a lot does depend on those variables.
    Hope this helps

  • Time machine backups take way too long

    Greetings,
Having trouble with Time Machine backups taking way too long. (No, it's not the first backup after some momentous event, as 90% of what I read about slow backups mentions; it's _every_ backup.)
20" iMac purchased Oct 2008. OS 10.6.8. 500 GB internal hard drive. 3 TB external backup drive. Was tested at the local "Genius" Bar, but they found nothing wrong with it. The best they could do is to recommend a restore from Time Machine, and if that didn't work, start clean and reload the OS and then copy my stuff back. I don't think so. I actually did a full Time Machine restore for a different reason, and it didn't help (except that I gained a few GB of disk space!).
My Time Machine backups now take about 39 minutes to complete. I have a 500 GB internal drive and this problem happens regardless of which external drive I use. (I have 3: 2 WD hard drives and one [noisy!] G-drive.) My current backup drive is a 3 TB WD drive with 2 TB of free space.
These are small incremental backups, typically about 35 MB. It doesn't take half an hour to copy 35 MB!
All phases take a long time, but the most irritating one is where TM appears to get stuck for a long time at the beginning and end of the copying phase. For example, at one point it will say something along the lines of Backing Up 7 KB of 34.4 MB. And it'll be like that for minutes on end. Later it will say something like 35 MB of 35 MB and hang there for minutes on end. During these periods the write I/O rate will go up and down, and CPU usage will often be very high (with backupd using 90 - 100%, in addition to highly elevated System CPU usage). In one particular backup the I/O write rate for one part of it looked like a heartbeat on an EKG! I should have taken a screenshot.
At the beginning during the Calculating Changes phase, backupd is using between 90 and 100% CPU.
There is also high CPU usage during the next phase, Preparing. And the number of items being prepared is in the thousands.
It always goes in two rounds because it finds that the root directory (/) has been modified.
I've Googled and searched Mac forums and found nothing useful. I started with a new .plist file and nothing's changed.
    Can anyone help? Thanks!
I wrote the above Jun 28. Yeah, finally getting around to posting it. Since then it's gotten worse. I now do a manual backup once a day and it takes almost an hour. I tried re-indexing Spotlight. No good.
Can anyone help? Again, this is not a "first backup." It is _every_ backup.
    Thanks!
    AEF

Thanks for your efforts. Here are my answers, comments, and further info:
I believe I have repaired permissions on my drive as part of my troubleshooting. And I'm sure I checked SMART status, which came up with a thumbs up, so to speak. I'm trying again. I don't see any useful messages in any logs on the console. I'm looking at "All Messages" and there is so far nothing useful. Oh, I think you must mean repair as in "Repair Disk," not "Repair Disk Permissions." I believe the "genius" at the Apple store did that or something just as good. The machine checked out fine according to them.
Checked SMART status just now: passed. Ran Quick Drive Test: also passed.
Oh, I installed "Time Machine Buddy". Occasionally, and only occasionally, I get a "deep traversal needed message" like this (I copied this from .Backup.log):
Running preflight for "Macintosh HD" (mount: '/' fsUUID: BF606E9A-5FD0-3B92-8D76-33DC63E7B2B1 eventDBUUID: 30DD929D-8982-46C2-BAE6-F0BD1E73916A)
            Scanning nodes needing deep traversal
            Node requires deep traversal: /Users/alanfeldman/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Database/apdb reason:contains changes|must scan subdirs|fsevent|missed reservation|
            Calculating size of changes
Should copy 2919 items (27.8 MB) representing 7116 blocks of size 4096. 546805181 blocks available.
Preflight complete for "Macintosh HD" (mount: '/' fsUUID: BF606E9A-5FD0-3B92-8D76-33DC63E7B2B1 eventDBUUID: 30DD929D-8982-46C2-BAE6-F0BD1E73916A)
Time elapsed: 1 minute, 39.000 seconds
But the vast majority of the time I do NOT get this message. But if there's something wrong with this apdb file, what can I do to fix it?
Note that there is usually, if not always, a lot of CPU activity or I/O (disk) activity, but not a lot getting done.

  • Do backups become slower as the TC fills with data?

I have about 80GB left on my 500GB TC.  backups are painfully slow, it seems my macbook is perpetually backing up, which seems to slow internet speeds which seems to make sense.
so 1) if backups take longer as space on the TC becomes filled, can it reset the TC to start over?  I only have about 140GB on my macbook and the TC backup is over 400GB so reseting it would reduce the file size or 2) if this is not possible, or has not effect on backup time...is there any way to reduce the frequency of TC backups?
I really hope there is an option for scheduled or manual backups.  The hourly things is great in a prefect work if backs where as quick as they were day one..but if they do slow, i'd even be ok with monthly.  I understand for business or heavy usage hourly might be great...but my TC is for back of a home PC.  its not like i'm adding ro deleting hundreds of documents and files a day.

If you don't mind erasing your current history of backups and starting over again, that would be the simplest and easiest approach to take.
Post back if you need some tip on how to erase the drive, etc.

  • Backups really slow after 10.5.5

    All,
after the upgrade to 10.5.5 TM (I have a 1Gb TC) became really, really slow. It takes just a few minutes to start the backup, but then it takes ages to complete it. Now after almost 3 hours it is still at 537Kb out of 1,9Gb.
Is that normal ? I saw in other posts that TM requires a deep analysis after the upgrade, but since it appears it has taken few minutes to prepare and now is very slow to execute, what's going on ?
Any suggestion on how to speed it up is welcome.

After almost 1 full day to complete the first backup after the upgrade, it is now back to normal speed.
