Backup just by dragging folders?

Total newbie with a new BlackBerry Curve 8330.
Regarding backing the thing up (the contacts, the photos, music files, everything...)
Can't I just plug the thing into a Mac with a USB cable, let it mount like a hard drive,
and drag/copy all the folders off it to the Mac?
If the thing every crashes, couldn't I then put a new mini-SD card in it, plug it into
the Mac, and drag everything back?
Will that not work?  I don't care about syncing, making incremental backups, blah blah blah.
I would be quite happy to just drag an archive off the thing once in a while as simple folders.
Along the same vein, if I wanted to take out the 1 GB SD card that's in it and upgrade it to,
say a 4 or 8, couldn't I do that the same way?  Drag everything to the Mac, turn the BB off,
put in the new card, turn it on, and drag everything back?
Thanks

Yes, you can do that (drag and drop with Mass Storage enabled on the Media Card) for anything in the media card.
For anything else (address book, calendar, messages, preferences, settings, etc.), no, you can't. You must use the Backup function in PocketMac.

  • Creating playlists by dragging folders: possible?

    Hi
I'm new to itunes, iphone, mac, etc etc... I'm very very sorry if this has been brought up, but I can't find any threats answering this question. Maybe I'm not searching correctly. If anyone can help, I would appreciate it.
I have been I avoiding iTunes because I can't figure out a way to just drag folders of music to create/upload music to my iPhone (or iPod) automatically. This was so easy with winamp, but does not seem to be possible in iTunes (ok, i can manually create playlists, then drag songs in them, but that is a lot of hassle). This is important to me because I like to listen to whole albums from the beginning to the end (am I oldfashioned?), and not search by artist (does not work for compilations by many artists) or albums (I remember albums by artist names). It is mystery to me why iTunes does not support drag/drop to create playlists by folder name (I have all my music organized by artist - album - year).
Am I missing something? Does iTunes actually support this? Are there any 3rd party apps? Please help.
    Thank you

As Chris said above, yes. In fact, I don't think you even need to make an empty playlist. If I recall correctly, you just drag the folder to the playlist area in iTunes. I believe it uses the folder name for the playlist name but, if it doesn't that's easily changed.

  • I lost my iPhone device, how can I get my data back on another one without using an iCloud backup just back up on i Tunes, Please Help.

I lost my iPhone device, how can I get my data back on another one without using an iCloud backup just back up on i Tunes, Please Help.??

You can find the backup files and then copy them to a safe place if you are worrying about this.
iTunes places the backup files in these places:
    Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
The "~" represents your Home folder. If you don't see Library in your Home folder, hold Option and click the Go menu.
    Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
To quickly access the AppData folder, click Start. In the search bar, type %appdata%, then press Return.
    Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
To quickly access the Application Data folder, click Start, then choose Run. In the search bar, type %appdata%, then click OK.

  • I have Yahoo mail provider but just lost my folders in Mac Mail program. The folders were not "On my Mac" but on "Yahoo". How do I get them back again?

I have Yahoo mail provider but just lost my folders in Mac Mail program. The folders were not "On my Mac" but on "Yahoo". How do I get them back again? I have reinstalled MacMail as everything had disappeared. The new install has given me everything except the Yahoo folders. When I looked one of the folders had reappeared, but now it has gone again. I am using Yosemite.
Desperate to find those folders with so much data involved.

Thanks for that babowa. If I add my Yahoo account it just goes straight to MacMail and says I already have an account. There seems to be no basic problem with mails going between Macmail and Yahoo. It is just the folders that have disappeared, while MacMail was out of action. I don't think those particular folders were ever on the Yahoo mail that I access through BT, they were just on the MacMail under "Yahoo" as opposed to "On my Mac". I am worried in case I lose what I already have if I press "Restore" from my back up. As you can see, I am not exactly good at this!

  • IPhone 3.0 backup just hangs

I have successfully installed the new iPhone 3.0 software on my original iPhone 2G. But when I go to put my iPhone in its cradle, it tries to do a backup of the iPhone, but the backup just hangs. I have to cancel the backup, and then it syncs everything else it needs to with no problems. I have a late model Power Mac G5 with USB 2.0, so it shouldn't take this long to backup, and it took no time at all before the 3.0 update. Any help/suggestions? Anyone else experiencing this trouble?

This EXACT thing happend to me, I tried up to 5 times and the "backing up" process is just a little over 50% done and it just hangs for hours at a time.
    SOLUTION:
I read a suggestion to erase the ESPN ScoreCenter app and Facebook app first, for some reason these two apps are causing problems, I tried that, unsuccessful.
In a last ditch attempt I erased ALL my apps except the Tiger Woods golf game, (I was scared that I had to buy it again $9.99!!!!) THIS WORKED!!!!!!! The backup process literally took 5 minutes!!!! Please try this!!! ERASE ALL YOUR APPS FIRST!!!!

  • Dragging folders to create a set and collections?

I know I can drag folders onto the collections tab to create a collection, but it flattens all the subfolders. Is there a way to drag a folder with subfolders and create collections in a collection set?
If it helps, an example is that sometimes I may be moving folders to another location and a different structure, and before I do so I want to preserve that folder structure in a collection set.

    robgendreau wrote:
Does it only do the entire folder tree?
    Yes.
A logical place to add the feature you want is in the Collection Agent plugin, which has similar features already for duplicating collection sets etc.. - would you use it if it had such a feature? Note: it won't be as slick as drag n' drop - You'd have to select the parent folder, invoke a function to record, then select the position where collection set will need to be, and invoke another function to create. And it may not be obvious how to do all that without reading the instructions.. i.e. klunky, but if it's something you do often, it would be easier than creating manually..

You can reformat the drive but that will wipe all the data on it. Move everything to your Mac. Reformat the drive using Disk Utility. If you need both Mac and Windows access, I suggest ExFAT. Then move it all back

  • Backup/restore and drag/drop .emlx back into mail......

    bit of a curly one,
Okay, I backed up a user's folder full of emails onto disc, so I could delete it (As it's taking up heaps on the server... they're using imap)
anyway...is there any way to drag/drop the .emlx files back into say a folder "on the mac" so that it can be visible on the hard disk in Mail?

First of all, you should realize that you’ve been making backups of data stored locally on disk, not of the messages stored on the server. Hence, in general, those backups may or may not allow you to restore your mail depending on a number of things, such as the account settings and the format used by the mail client to cache messages locally (if any).
If Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > Keep copies of messages for offline viewing is set to All messages and their attachments (the default setting), then Mail 2.x maintains a local copy of server-stored mailboxes using the exact same format it uses for locally stored mailboxes, except the suffix of the mailbox folder in the filesystem is .imapmbox instead of .mbox.
You cannot import *.imapmbox mailboxes directly into Mail because when you do File > Import Mailboxes and choose Mail for Mac OS X as the data format, Mail looks for *.mbox folders only, but if Keep copies of messages for offline viewing was indeed set to All messages and their attachments when the backup of those mailboxes was made, you can easily overcome that limitation by just changing the suffix to .mbox:
    1. Copy the entire ~/Library/Mail/IMAP-username@mailserver account folder from the backup to the Desktop.
    2. Change the .imapmbox suffix of the folders within the account folder on the Desktop to .mbox.
    3. In Mail, do File > Import Mailboxes, choose Mail for Mac OS X as the data format, and follow the instructions to import the copy of the account folder that’s on the Desktop.

  • Formatted HD, but have backup of all the folders and files of Firefox. How can I restore everything, including plugins, bookmarks and saved settings?

I have formatted my computer's HD because of a problem with Windows 7, the thing is that Windows 7 didn't start, so I couldn't backup my Firefox settings, bookmarks, plugins, themes, personas and etc. the right way.
I also don't have a Firefox Sync account.
What I do have are all the folders and files of Firefox, because I just created a new partition and installed Windows 7 again, what I'm having trouble is finding a way (if there's any) to restore everything from my previous installation to the new one.
I have searched for days on both Google and on te Firefox forum with no success, the only questions I found are about restoring a profile, but what I'm trying to do is the same thing that the Firefox add-on " FEBE " does, which is restoring everything to the previous configuration.
    Here's alink to the add-on: https://addons.mozilla.org/pt-br/firefox/addon/febe/
I have tried copying, pasting and overwritting from the " .default " folder to my new installation of Firefox (yes, Firefox was closed), but when I opened it again, nothing was restored.
I every single folder and file Firefox ever created on my computer, this includes the installation folder (at Program Files), the profile (.default at AppData) folder, the Mozilla folder (ProgramData) and the Mozilla Firefox folder (also at AppData).
I also had the FEBE add-on installed, but like stated before, unfortunately I couldn't start Windows 7, forcing me to create a new partition to install a new copy of the OS.
    Thanks in advance.
PS. Sorry if I made the text too long and/or if I mentioned the same things twice, just trying to be thorough.

    Hi Sdarts,
I apologize for the delay in replying to your question, and I am sorry to hear that you are having issues restoring your Firefox user data.
Please see the following article, which explains how to restore your Firefox user data using a previously backed up Profiles folder, which seems to apply to your situation:

  • 10.5.6 Update Breaks Time Machine backup of FileVault home folders?

Time machine used to backup FileVault home folders when I logged out. After 10.5.6, it just logs out and does not do the backup.
    Anyone else?
    s

This is a copy of a post that I have here somewhere...
"Personally I think apple is up to something...."
My set up was almost since Leopard was out.. Airport Extreme, USB drive connected to it.. 3 profiles on a macbook mid 07, 4 g's ram.. TM would back up will I was logged in every hour or so.. and whenever I logged out it would back up my home folder since I had file vault enabled.. never had a mayor problem.. updated to 10.5.6 about a day after it was out.. TM still backed up while I was logged in but it stopped backing up my home folder that had file vault enabled.. I decided to try a clean back up with another USB drive that I had used for the same purpose and it would not even recognize the format of the drive.. Any ways.. today I got a brand new 500 g's time capsule.. guess what... same thing.. it wont back up my home folder.. I've been with support on the phone since the beginning of the problem spoke to 4 different people 2 different levels, finally one level higher (3rd) the guy told me he couldn't help me because the set up i had was not supported by apple.. today I got to that 3rd level and the guy had no idea.. he even or actually most of them sounded surprise when i told them that i was expecting TM to back up when i was logged off.. .. well he is supposedly going to fwd my issue to their engineers and he or some one else would call me back in around a week becuase of the holly days..
SSooooo , I would say, lets not hold our breath..

  • Can't drag folders or files between apps using mission control

I've been using Lion without any incident so far, but now that I've downloaded the lastest update (10.7.2) I can't drag a file or folder using mouse click (or my wacom tablet) between apps or folders - gestures simply will not work.
Once I click on a file, the multi-touchpad stop responding - if this is for real, Mac just lost it's allure... the nimble feature of exposé and/or mission control was this sole ability to navigate through apps and draggin files.
What's the status, anyone got this issue already?

I've been encountering the exact same problem! that was my favourite multi-touch gesture of all, which improved the productivity greatly. The only workaround for me is to assign hot-corners to mission control and drag files i want to the corners, but I really hope there's an explanation for this because i would really like that feature to be back

  • How to make backups of iCloud mail folders

I have a few iCloud Mail folders with saved emails moved from my Inbox and I would like to make a backup of the their content to either my Mac's HD or an esternal drive.  I  make regular backups of my iCloud Address Book (which I found very helpful when I lost all my contacts when setting up iCloud) and I use Time Machine for the documents I have in the Mac, and now I want to backup the mail folders but cannot figure out how to do it.
    Can someone help me, please?

If you are using Time Machine, it should take care of backing up your email.
However, if you want to backup outside of Time Machine there are a couple of ways to go about it. The simplest, butprobably most time-consuming method, is to simply drag each email one by one to a folder on your desktop.
Another method you could use, is to navigate to the mail folder in your library and copy it. You can access your library folder by clicking on the go menu in the Finder, holding down the option key on your keyboard, and selecting library from the list when it appears

  • I can't drag folders on/off my deskstop

Although, I have rebooted my puter, I cannot drag/move any of the folders on my desktop.
    What is happening?

Here's Apple doc.#107247. Apple says to restart your Mac as many times as it takes to allow drag and drop again. This problem is limited to some Jaguar users. It may take numerous restarts.
It is also suggested, in another Apple doc. I saw, you install the 10.2.8 Combo update. You can install right over your present 10.2. with no issues. Make sure you unplug all USB and FireWire before installing. Just to be safe, Repair Permissions before and after the install.
    If that doesn't work try the following submitted by George Orville;
    Drag & Drop not working...
You have a choice files to delete in ..... ~/LibraryPreferences
    • com.apple.desktop.plist
    • com.apple.dock.plist (your choice to delete this or not)
    • com.apple.finder.plist
    • com.apple.LaunchServices.LocalCache.csstore
    • com.apple.LaunchServices. plist
    • com.apple.LauchServices. UserCache.csstore
Also you have a choice of files to delete in........
    /Library/Caches/ (folder)
Then restart your Mac and try!
    Cheers!

  • Best backup software for individual folders?

I already use Carbon Copy Cloner to make a clone of my Macintosh HD to my External HD, but now I'm looking for backup software that will back up just my music, photos, individual folders etc. I like Apple's Backup, but I'm not prepared to pay the money for .Mac when I'm only going to use 1 app. Any suggestions? (preferably freeware, but I don't mind shareware)

i like deja vu very much, although it, too is not free...
