Backup library / transfer songs from PB to G5

ok, i have been doing my best to use mac help (one of the best things in OSX) and searching around the boards....
im not sure i have the exact answer i need.
so, I have several macs. The two main ones i use are my 17" powerbook, and my quad G5. The PB is a few years old, and has been used for ALL of my iTunes and iPhoto content - including managing all of my iPods. Needless to say, with 6 thousand images (40% are 8 mpx files) and several thousand songs, im out of space on my Powerbook. I have about 90 gigs free on my quad, as well as a FW drive w/ about 70 gigs free (of 250)~and plan on adding a 500 or 750 gig drive to the quad soon. Ultimately, i want to migrate all of my photos and songs to the G5 and clear off room on the powerbook and use that mainly as an "in the field" machine.
Im unsure if I can/should just target mode FW connect my powerbook to the Quad and drag the iPhoto and iTunes folders to the Quad. Or should I back up to MANY dvd-r's then copy each onto the G5 - which i anticipate taking a long time... The majority of my music is self ripped, and only have about 100 iTunes bought songs so far. Is either method going to cause the itunes purchased music to not play on the Quad?(both machines are authorized to my account and i frequently share the PB library through the Quad speakers.)
I have lots of media that i will be pretty upset if lost (vacation photos, work images~im a photographer/graphic artist.) and i really just want the best, most reliable way of tranferring this stuff to my G5. Seeing how many gigs worth of files i am working with, id hate to burn 20 dvds, and then have some playback issues on a different machine.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
Once all these files are moved, I am planning on setting up a monthly backup of new media to disc, for safe keeping. I have just never been much of a backup person, and now am starting to worry of something happening to my powerbook HD and losing years of work.
sidenote - 99% of my music is mp3 so ID3 tags should remain for them correct? If i ever do need aiff or other fomats (which i do often for use in final cut studio), i just convert on a song to song basis. So there are very few aiff's and i dont really care if i loose those.
this new album flow in iTunes has got me trying to go back and organize years worth of songs and add artwork. its a pain, and i stress to anyone to keep up on your file naming from the get go. (when i used to import in older versions there was no get cd track names feature - at least that i knew of, so i poorly labled alot of tunes.)
thanks again for any info in advance. again, im sure this is covered often, but i searched quite a bit and couldnt really find a satisfying answer.

If photographer/graphic artist is your living, I would recommend to purchase an external drive for storage/backup ASAP.
Even if you don't do that for a living and the files are valuable for you, backup, backup, backup.
There are two kinds of computer users:
Those who experienced a HD crash
Those who will experience a HD crash
I can tell from experience (about 10 years ago) how it feels to experience a HD crash and not having a backup. I lost some important documents, so I decided to spend part of my money in backups.
Nowadays large storage devices are relatively cheap compared with costs of computers.
Back to your questions.
The easiest way to transfer your iTunes library is to put the PB in FireWire Target Disk Mode and copy the 'iTunes Music' folder to the G5.
If you don't mind loosing the playlists, comments and ratings, just add that folder to the iTunes library on your G5.
To retain all information, use your external disk drive as an intermediate to transfer your iTunes library.
Here is how it's done:
Follow the instructions in iTunes: Moving your iTunes Music folder to move your library from the PB to the FW drive.
Copy the 'iTunes Library' file (more info about the library files here) to the FW drive.
Connect the drive to the G5 and copy the 'iTunes Library' file to the proper location.
Run iTunes. It should find the library on the external drive.
Now move your music to the G5 using the instructions again.
Which method you use, the ID3 tags will not be lost.
If the G5 is authorized, it will also play all your purchased music.
As far as I know, you can simply transfer your entire 'iPhoto Library' folder to the G5 using FW target disk mode.
Holding the Option-key when launching iPhoto on the G5 will give you the option to choose the transferred library.
I don't know much about iPhoto, so if this not works, ask in the iPhoto forums.
iTunes is a bit more complicated and requires to do it in a special way.
Most (if not all) Mac suitable large capacity drives come with (limited) backup software.
I bought a Maxtor Onetouch II (300 GB) about a year ago, which came with Retrospect Express. It suites the purpose well enough for my backup needs.
If you find it too limited for your needs, upgrade to the full version of whatever backup application that comes with the drive.
If you have questions left, let us know.
Hope this helps.

Your question has probaby been answered already because it was posted a month ago but anyways what you do is you plug your phone into your computer. Next you want to open iTunes and click on File. Then you go down to "Transfer Purchases from *your name* iPhone". Then just wait for it to sync and you should be good.

If you only want to copy your purchases to the computer that can be done using iTunes, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
For everything else (including purchases) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide

How do I transfer songs from my ipod mini to either my computer or to my itunes library.

    Hello Christopher,
There are 2 ways to go about this.  One is to use the manual method which is a little different depending on whether or not you use a Mac or a PC or you can opt to use a 3rd party software that can help you accomplish the task as well.  See this older thread for a list of possible software you could use.

  • How do I transfer songs from my iPad to my iTunes library?

How can I transfer songs from my iPad to my iTunes account?  I want to update my iPads but I don't want to lose all the songs that aren't in my iTunes account yet.

Connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and you should be able to copy iTunes purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases (File > Devices > Transfer Purchases on iTunes 11). If any of the music wasn't purchased from iTunes and you don't have it on your computer nor on a backup then you will need to find a third-party program which copy them over - there are some listed half-way down this page.
You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'.
You can then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button

  • How do you transfer songs from an iPod Nano to library

How do I transfer songs from an iPod Nano to the iTunes Library or iMatch so I can access them on my iPad?

iTunes Match requires a connection to the Internet; an iPod nano has no networking capability.  Everything for the nano goes through your computer.
If you want the songs on the nano on your iPad, they need to be transferred to your computer and then added to your iTunes library.  You cannot transfer song files from iPod to computer using iTunes (except for songs purchased from the iTunes Store).  However, there are third-party methods and utilties that can transfer from iPod to computer.  If you do a Google search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links.
Once the song files are in your iTunes library, the will be added to your iTunes Match library in iCloud.  You can then add the songs to your iPad from your computer or from iCloud.
NOTE:  Songs previously purchased from the iTunes Store can also be re-downloaded at no cost, from the iTunes Store Purchased screen.

  • How to transfer songs from one iPod to another?

I have three ipods - iPod #1 has only been synced to iTunes. I want to transfer songs from iPod #2 to iPod #3 without having all of the existing iTunes from iPod #1 getting synced to iPod #3. How do I upload iPod #2 to iTunes and keep it isolated, and then sync only thos songs to iPod #3?
I can not figure out how to upload the songs to my Library without losing them in the muck of the thousands of other songs that are already in the Library.
I am a new user but I find that navigating iTunes is extremely non-user friendly...
    Thank you!

Haven't you got your songs in iTunes? Just connect your new one and it will update from your Library.

  • How to transfer songs from one iPOD to another one?

On my old iPOD I've collected songs for various libraries (from friends and my two computers) but stupid iTUNES won't let me transfer my songs from this iPOD back to Library.
So, now when I've got a new a iPOD, I have to put all the songs there again, because iTUNES again won't let me transfer songs from one iPOD to another iPOD, when both are connected to the same computer!!
    What should I do?
Apple as an innovator company should come up with an update to solve this easy issue.
