Backup - Media Manager - FireStore

Any suggestions for a good Backup procedure?
I tried working with Media Manager BUT I have a problem namely:
I work on quicktime files generated from a FireStore (I don't capture from tapes). So those files don't have Reel Names. So when I use in the Media Manager "delete unused parts of the clip" ... it actually doesn't. In the manual, it's written that for clips that don't have real names or source timecode - FCP DOES NOT delete the unused parts of the media files.
I actually use parts of media files using IN & Out points and I NEED to backup the whole clips because Media Manager does not help me in that. Any clue????

In the media manager, I'm doing a "copy" and have
"delete unused media from duplicated items" selected.
Since this is a copy, my original source medial will
be untouched, right? Very clearly stated, nothing is
deleted?
Yes, that's right. Make sure it's a copy, and preferably make it to a different drive (why coming up).
Also, I have titles and effect shots linked via
motion projects in the sequence. How are these
handled...
MM will also copy Motion, Soundtrack Pro, LiveType project files as well as still images, PhotoShop documents, and who knows what else.
...and how can I make sure if all my original
data is lost, that this backup will have all my media
used in the motion segments?
You want to check the new project thoroughly to make sure it's all there. This means at least stepping through, playing segments to make sure the right stuff is there. Really it should include rendering it out and playing back the whole thing to make sure there are no glitches.
This is where copying it to a different drive can come in. If you do that, then you can take the original drive offline to make positively sure the new project isn't reading anything from there. Another option is to rename any folders that are relevant to the first project, so that if they're referenced in the MM project they won't be found. Red flag. Be especially careful about images and Motion etc. projects, which may be scattered depending how you work.

  • Clip weirdness after Media Manager backup

Several of my clips have freaked out after the media manager backup. I'll have to go back to an autosave and see what exactly was on them, but definitely there was a modifed speed property and I think, a keyframed brightness filter.
Also had an issue with the burn, but once I get it redone, I'll check to see if there;s any other MM weirdness.
I'll have to re-edit the portions. What can i do to avoid this issue when backing up in the future, for speed modified, layered clips?

    I feel for ya...
Let's say I was doing the Smith Wedding...2 cameras, 2 tapes each camera. And since I've maybe done 3 previous weddings with a total of 10 tapes used, I'll keep a dedicated naming convention for wedding tapes, (since I may do other type event work)...such as WED001, WED002, WED003...etc.
So for this project my REEL names will be:
    WED011C1T1_Smithmmddyy
    WED012C1T2_Smithmmddyy
    WED013C2T1_Smithmmddyy
    WED014C2T2_Smithmmddyy
Then for tape 1 from cam 1 (which has pre-event Broll and Interviews), I'd set in/outs for each clip with names like:
    WED011C1T1_SmithBarbIntv
    WED011C1T1_SmithBarbHouseExtBR
    WED011C1T1_SmithJoeIntv
    WED011C1T1BarbJoeKissBR
    WED011C1T1JoeDogBitesMomNLaw
ect...down the tape, hitting 'Log Clip' after each In/Out is set and making sure that Reel and Clip are properly named.
Then rewind tape, select all logged clips in browser except JoeDogBitesMomNLaw (since I really won't use it), select File/Batch Capture and away it goes, while I get coffee and check up on Barb's Mom.
Put in second Cam1 tape, lather, rinse, repeat.
    This way,
1 - You can be totally selective about which shots you actually capture (saving disk space)
2 - You can always come back and 'batch capture' the JoeDogBitesMomNLaw clip, when you realize you actually might use it after all.
3 - Since you probably didn't man both cameras, you've now had a chance to familiarize yourself with the shots the 2nd camera had.
4 - You can now color code shots w/o having to break them up from master clips.

    Hello forum

    an identical data stream.
sbttest will return 0 which indicates success or 1 which indicates an error has
occurred. An error means it's not an Oracle problem.

  • Question about making a project backup with Media Manager

I have several projects that I am working on right now. I'd like to make a backup of these projects and burn them to DVDs. The question I have is when I select "copy" with Media Manager it shows me how much space the backup will be. Without selecting the render files each of my projects would fit a a single DVD. If I don't include render files can they easily be recreated by just re-rendering the backup project?
    Thanks!

Backing up a project file takes very little space. Backing up the media associated with that project can take up a tremendous amount of space. By using Media Manager, I assume that you want to back up (copy) the media ... correct?
Do you only have 4.3gb of media used in the project you want to back up? That's all the data a DVD disc will hold.

  • FULL HOT Backup failing with a 6 on media management layer....

    Hi all,
My thanks in advance for reading and any posts. Appologies for the long post, but wanted to make sure I got all information required into the post
    *******************The background*************************
We are currently doing full hot backups of all production databases to tape. The database we use is RAC install (9.2.0.6.0) on Linux Redhat Enterprise 4 (database on OCFS). We use a seperate Solaris 8 box with 2 HP Ultium tape drives over a standard Cat5 line (100mb), we use Veritas Netbackup 5.1 as our media manager and we use an RMAN repositry on another box. Currently the backup is taking on average 17 hours to complete (something that I have been through with Oracle).
We use the below rman script to do the full database backup.
    DATE=`date +%m%d%Y-%H%M%S`; export DATE
    USER=`id | cut -f2 -d"(" | cut -f1 -d")"`
    ORACLE_SID=ausl5; export ORACLE_SID

    exit
    EOF1
    EOF
Now due to the backup taking so long, we often have archive log backups that kick off. We generally get Restore Validates of this backup once a week.
    *********************************Problem*******************************
Getting to the problem, the media manager generally completes the job with a 6, which in Veritas means that the backup failed to back up the requested files. I guess that this could be something to do with the media manager layer. But myself and my colleagues are of the opinion that this is something to do with the archive log backups running inbetween (hence the change archivelog all validate; appearing so many times in the script).
    Has anyone got any ideas?
Thanks again for any posts / ideas,
    Mark.

No I mean, it really tries to backup everything; control file, archive logs etc...
Yeah I will admit its a bit strange, didn't code it myself. The idea was to do a bit a of house keeping at the same time with the archived redo logs (hence the file system stuff with the archived redo logs).
You see we thought that this might be causing the issue.
    any ideas are welcomed,
    thanks again,
    Mark.

  • Media Manager won't load

I just got a new curve 8320 and I've installed the Blackberry Desktop Manager v 5.0.1.18
It connects to my BB fine via usb cable but in Add/Remove Applications, it comes up blank with the message "No software is available for your device".
Also, when I try to install the Media Manager, it gets stuck at "downloaded 59.7MB out of (unknown)" and then the loading box just disappears. I've tried just reclicking the Install button and the same things happens.
I've tried to look online for the Media Manager file to download separately but nothing came up.
If someone could help me out that would be great. Thanks so much!

    Hi there!
    A couple of thoughts...
5.0.1.18 is an older version of DTM -- it is up to 5.0.1.28...I suggest you try the most recent version.
Media Manager -- only use a version of DTM/MM if you absolutely must. MM can be problematic and, if you don't need it, then grab a DTM version without MM.
There is no separate MM to DL -- the DTM package you grab (with or without MM) determines what you will have.
You might want to try these clean re-start instructions:
I suggest the following steps (insert plenty of reboots of your PC...not just restarts, but full power down reboots). Also, it is advised that you be logged into the PC on an account with full admin rights. Further, under Vista/Win7, use the "Run As Administrator" option for everything.
    1) Remove your device OS update package from your PC (add/remove programs)
    2) Cleanly uninstall the RIM DTM software:
KB02206 How to perform a clean uninstall of BlackBerry Desktop Software
    3) Get a fresh download of the RIM DTM software:
    https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads/entry.do?code=A8BAA56554F96369AB93E4F3BB068C22
Choose the version that is newest and (if applicable) compatible with your PIM (if you are synchornizing via USB):
KB12268 Applications supported by BlackBerry Desktop Manager for synchronization
    4) Download (to your PC) a fresh copy of your device OS package from your carrier:
    http://na.blackberry.com/eng/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp
    5) Install DTM to your PC
    6) Install (also to your PC), the device OS package
    7) Start the organizer configuration over:
KB17022 How to configure organizer applications for synchronization using BlackBerry Desktop Manager
Hopefully that will get things going again.

  • BB Desktop / Roxio Media Manager Problems

Seriously, how does anyone use this software?  I'm using the latest 4.7 version.  Connecting my Storm up to my PC (Windows Vista), the overall response time is so slow that it is almost painful to watch.  Issues -
    1. Checks for applications updates everytime I click on a function? Really? This just happened when I launched the application - why does it do it everytime I click on Add application, manage media, etc?
    2. Roxio Media Manager - this is about the most painful piece of software I've ever used.  Did anyone really QA this before shipping it?  Slow, slow, and slow.  No indication that it is doing anything after you click on an action. Half the time it doesn't do anything!  Moving media files, pictures, etc should take this long.  Even navigating the local file system shouldn't take 30 - 60 seconds to do.
BB - any updates coming?  It feels like this was rushed out before it was fully developed....

    Research shows:
    1.  (thanks to my friend John Clark for this instructional) To prevent this from happening this you need to install Desktop Manager WITHOUT this Automatic Update service. Below are the steps to remove this service.
    1. Go to Control Panel >Add/Remove Programs.
    2. Click on "BlackBerry Desktop Software" and select "Change/Remove."
    3. When prompted, hit "Next" and then you should get options for Modify, Repair, or Remove. Choose "Modify."
    4. On DM 4.7 and higher, in the list of installed items, you should see "BlackBerry Automatic Update." Click the icon next to it and change it to "This feature will not be available." That should put an "X" next to "BlackBerry Automatic Update." If you are using DM 4.6 or lower and don't see this option in this list then just continue with the install and the installation will ask you a few screens later. A screen will be shown where you will be asked to check the boxes for:
    A) "Start BlackBerry Desktop Manager automatically each time the computer starts."
    B) "Create a shortcut for BlackBerry Desktop Manager on the Windows Desktop."
    C) "Check for software updates."
Be sure number 3, "Check for software updates," is NOT checked.
    2. Yes the Roxio software is buggy to me as well. I don't install it and life stays good. Use Mass Storage Mode enabled on your Media Card (Options > Media Card) and then you can drag/drop files from your PC to the Media Card as it will appear simply as a removable drive.

  • ORA-19511 Media Management Error

I am getting following error while taking the backup to tape using OSB:
    RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
    RMAN-00569: =============== ERROR MESSAGE STACK FOLLOWS ===============
    RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
RMAN-03009: failure of backup command on eps2_sbt channel at 02/22/2008 10:32:30
ORA-27192: skgfcls: sbtclose2 returned error - failed to close file
ORA-19511: Error received from media manager layer, error text:
shmcheck: The obtar process (pid=26769) communicating with SBT has terminated.
This might be because the job was cancelled elsewhere, or due to an internal error.
Please check the job transcript for more information.
    ORA-19502: write error on file "0sj9beek_1_1", blockno 47105 (blocksize=512)
I have inserted a new tape so there is lot of space available on the tape. Tape is attached to the same box, so its only 1 box with admin, media and client roles.
The backup was working fine earlier on this box, this all started today itself and also the file system backup to tape using OSB is still working fine but not the RMAN backups, nobody changed anything in OSB or Database configurations.
Is it time to log the TAR or is there something else which I can check??

Usually, that kind of error message indicates that the OSB user (with associated os privilege) does not have os privilege to access SCSI devices (ie tape devices). Believe it or not this is a common problem, especially, for the DBA user which os rights don't always include access to tape devices.
OSB will always adhere to os privileges soooo if the os blocks a user, OSB will also block that user.

  • RMAN not retrying on media manager errors

    Hi,
I'm using Oracle 10g, RMAN and TDPO (the TSM client for Oracle). I'm
trying to do a PITR to a non-production machine, but RMAN is intolerant
of any media manager problems that crop up, so things like this
ORA-19511: Error received from media manager layer, error text:
    ANS1017E (RC-50) Session rejected: TCP/IP connection failure
    and this
ORA-19511: Error received from media manager layer, error text:
ANS1314E (RC14) File data currently unavailable on server
result in an immediate 'failover to previous backup'. The first error
was caused by a transient network problem; I suspect the second was just
bad luck as the file was being reclaimed by the TSM server when TDPO
    asked for it.
Both these errors would have gone away if RMAN had tried again, so is
there any way I can tell it to retry on error? If not, is there
something else I could do to improve the situation?
    Thanks
    Sandeep

I think I fixed your error in your other post. If you search these forums though, you will find that the media manager is not held in "HIGH REGARD" by users of every type of OS.

  • Using Roxio Media Manager in standalone mode

I have installed Media Manager with RIM's Desktop Manager, but I only have use for Roxio Media Manager.
Is there's a way to just install Media Manager ?
Alternatively is it possible to launch Media Manager individually without having to go through the Desktop Manager launcher ?
Alternatively is it possible to have Desktop Manager automatically launch Media Manager (via a command line) ?
Thanks in advance for any help on this matter (the documentation is really missing this point).

    No.
But I think the desktop manager is useful for you to do backups.

  • Final Cut Server + Media Manager Best Practices

Is anyone using Final Cut Server to organize FCP Media Manager?
I don`t want MM and it`s individual contains cataloged by FCS, only a "bundle" from the directory of MM (that has the project and a sub-directory called Media with all medias from that project).
I`ve tried different solutions but always get stuck in some way.
1- Get the directory from MM and put on a Device being watched by a scan production. A production with the name from the directory is created and the project and medias are catalogued as well.
But I don`t want those medias and projects catalogued by FCS. I`ve tried to set the recursion limit to 0 or 1 but the production is not created, neither the bundle (from the directory) asset. Nevertheless you can`t archive productions (with MatrixStore you can), so a workaround would be to archive only the bundle inside the production (if you managed to get only the directory as a bundle inside the production). But to get worse, if you update the directory as a bundle (regardless if it`s inside a production or not) and your archive device is a FTP device it says "ERROR: E_NOTSUPP Sorry, copying a bundle to an ftp server is not supported".
2- Zip with "ditto" (because the 2GB problem with normal zip) the MM directory and put on a device being watched. This won`t be scanned by a scan production to create a production with the name of it contents because it`s not a directory it`s a zip file and even if I forget about productions and only uploads the zip files to get each MM directory created as a zip takes too long and much cpu power so it`s not possible with many MM directories (the case). And to get things worse (always murphy), before I`ve deleted those directories I checked the integrity of zip files and to my surprise some of them were ruined. So I don`t trust compressing anything for my backup. I`ve tried Tar, ditto, archive from finder (that`s the same as ditto) but it takes too long or break the file.
The bottom line: I just want a MM as directory bundle in FCS (preferentially inside a production automatically created) AND being able to archive it to a FTP device.
    Thanks in advance

Well it sounds like you have two problems: getting a successful scan production to work and archiving. I think I can help with the first one.
When you set up your device make sure that it is one directory level up from each folder you want turned into a production. So for example - XSAN/Show1/MM/ - if you make XSAN the device and set the recursion limit to 0, Show1 will become a production and Show2, Show3, etc for example. Set the recursion limit to 1 and MM becomes a production - Show2/MM/ and Show3/MM, etc for example.
Here's what I would do. Device 1 = XSAN/Show1 with recursion = 0. In the production info section of the scan production response set the title = Show1_[0]. The [0] will automatically fill in the name of the directory, ie - MM. This way each folder within Show1 becomes a production and the name is preceded by Show1 for easy sorting. This way you can isolate your MM folder and treat it differently.
That should get your productions scanning correctly. I'm not sure about archiving to an FTP device, zipping bundles, or automatically adding bundled assets to productions with a scan. As far as I know, the only way to add a bundled asset is to manually upload a folder. I might be wrong about this though.
Hope this helps even a little.
