Backup MX Server

I have my domain with an ISP and all is well.
I was wanting to set my domains DNS records so that I get copies of all emails, sent and recieved on this domain, to my mac OSX 10.7 Server, as a backup.
I have OSX Server 10.7.latest setup and ready to go with the Domain name, IP, Reverse DNS, etc and email, user account, settings.
Is it simply a matter of creating another MX record in my Domain Names MX record, at the ISP, to point to my OSX 10.7 Servers external WAN IP number?
The current MX mail record has a priority of 10
I have a few other OSX 10.7 Servers running as primary domain mail servers, so I am familar with a working setup already.
Thank you,

Yes, this is possible.  But you will not have a unified message store and you will need to do a redirection of your client systems.  Here is the reasons.
First, if you have mail server 1 at mail1.domian.com and a second at mail2.domain.com, it is easy to create the same accounts on these systems.  Thus, MX failover will "work."  But unless they are accessing the same message store (some SAN storage), you will not have a unified message store.  Thus, is mail1 is running smooth and has 10s of GB of mail and goes down, then mail2 will start receiving messages but the historical content will not be present.  The results on the client (IMAP, Exchange, etc) will be unpredictable and merging the content once mail1 comes back on line will be painful to say the least.  Again, this is solved via a clusters mail solution accessing common storage.  Apple used to support this with a click.  Ah, the good old days.
The issue with a clustered server though is that both head nodes tend to be in the same place since they need access to the same storage.  And then you are back to a single point of failure... the storage.
Now, the second point is that you will have no means of handling the client during the failure of mail1.  Recall, MX records are for mail delivery routing, not from IMAP/POP/Exchange client connections.  If this is the case and you configure your mail clients to connect to mail1.domain.com and this server goes down, they will not magically connect to mail2 unless you modify all client configurations.  But again, we are back to the message store.
If you are looking for backup, look at services like MX Save.  They provide an SMTP backup service that will collect all undeliverable mail while your primary server is down and then deliver it when you are back up.  Plus, the mimic your server allowing web based or client based access during primary server outage allowing your users to continue to function as if the primary server were still running.
Building your own mail cluster is difficult enough without the limitations of OS X.  If you are really looking to do this you ought to look at another platform.  Even Kerio is really bad at this.  Especially when you are considering multiple locations.  Keeping the storage in sync is almost impossible on a high traffic server.

  • Redundent mail server setup (backup mail server)

i have been reading all the post of setting up a mackup postfix server. i have looked at the configuration files and have a second machine ready to be implemented but have some questions on how exactly the backup works. my current setup is:
    - xserve1 with 10.4.3 OD master running mail, web, dns, ichat, ftp, host name is mail.mydomain.com
    - xserve2 with 10.4.3 (i will make this replica) running web and backup dns
    - G4 466MHz with 10.4.3 Server running mail and web, host name is mail2.mydomain.com (this is to bemy postfix backup server)
all 3 are behind a firewall with NAT. they have local LAN IPs with NAT to 3 separate WAN IPs and open ports for the needed services.
my first question is: do i need to run dns as well on mail2.mydomain.com?
while i understand that mail stays in the queue on the postfix backup, does that mean that while mail.mydomain.com (primary mail server) is down users will not be getting any mail? can the users actually login to the mail2.mydomain.com and if yes how do they authorize?
should i keep mail2.mydomain.com as a standalone or make it part of the directory?
    any info is appreciated.
    thanks
    martin
    xserve G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

don't mail servers hold mail for days anyway and keep
retrying and when our mail comes back up will get all
    the mail?
Yes, they typically do (unless some braindead administrator has configured his server to try only for a few hours or so).
i assume there is no difference if my
backup mail server runs on 10.3.9 then?
    None whatsoever.
    - is there a practical way to set up a mail that
clinets can login to and check mail while the primary
    server is down?
    Practical? No.
can the backup server forward as well
while it holds to the queue?
Why would you want that? Where should it forward to if the primary is down? As soon as the primary is up, the secondary will forward to i.
the last time i had some
coruption and problems with reconstruct (which you
helped me with), we were down for 24 hours. i am
trying to avoid this. i have an image and i run
mailbfr to backup i assume i can use that in case of
harware failure or massive os corruption that may
    take hours to fix.
If push comes to shove this may help. Although images are never too brilliant for mail services recovery.
my problem is that if this happens
during the week, during daytime we cannot really
afford to be down at that time.
This is really your call. Only you can decide how much money you want/need to throw at resilience. But if you decide you cannot afford more than an hour of downtime, you will need far more than an onsite secondary mx

  • How do I create a backup DNS server?

    Hi All,
I've got my production server (Xserve Intel) running 10.6 and it is our primary DNS server. I've gotta take it down to do some work on it, but by doing so, no one in the organization will be able to access the internet.
I'd like to set up my old Xserve (G5, running 10.5) as a backup DNS server that can handle the DNS requests whenever I need to take the main server down. Unfortunately, I'm kind of a DNS n00b.
What is the best way to go about this?
    Thanks,
    Chris

Oh, quite embarrassing. I complained about not understanding the author of the article when I was actually speaking to the author. How rude! Apologies, kind sir.
I've now got it set up correctly with your help, it seems. I've just got a few other questions regarding the Secondary DNS Server if you don't mind:
    1) Do I set any forwarder IP Addresses on the secondary server? Should I put the same forwarders that I use on my primary, or should I put the IP address of my primary in there, or should I just leave it blank?
    2) *Edit - Ignore question 2; found the answer in your guide*
    3) When I look at the secondary zones, they don't seem to be populated with any data. . . Does this mean that the secondary server is completely reliant on the primary server to function correctly? In other words, *when I take my primary server offline, does the secondary server still work?*
    Thanks,
    Chris

  • Clients Backup on Server 2012 Essentials Encrypted?

Hello, I would like to backup a client running win 7 ultimate, with encryption and bit locker enabled onto Server 2012 Essential.
I am just wondering if the backup on the server will continue to be encrypted? If not is there a way to keep the backup secure? Thanks!

Let me just check that I understand.
The Windows 7 Client is Bitlocker Encrypted
The 2012 Essentials is Bitlocker Encrypted.
My understanding of BitLocker is limited, but as I believe it only protects the machine when it is offline, ie, protects from someone attempting to put the drive(s) in another machine and access the data, or before Windows has booted.
In that respect, the backups are protected.
The backups themselves are stored in a database which is only accessible/useable by Essentials, it is not a normal WindowsImageBackup type folder. However that Client Backup folder can be moved to another essentials Server and effectively compromised, however
this would need to be done either from a running server that someone gained access to, or by copying the data while windows is offline, see above on that.
So really it is a question of what you are trying to mitigate. Is it an internal attacker who restores data they should not have access to? (requires admin permissions)
Or is it someone stealing a computer?
You can of course backup the server to Bitlocker Enabled drives.

  • Unity 7 Backup Subscriber Server - Live Reply not working

Hi we have two Unity 7 servers, one Primary and 2nd Backup Subscriber Server.
Live Reply is not working when the Unity Primary Server fall onto the Backup Server.
Do anyone have an idea or an solution form me?
    On both Servers:
    Unity Version: 7.0(2.0)
    Patch installed: CU7.0(2)_ES34
    Exchange 2007
    Many Thank,
    Nico

    Hello,
I am looking at the guide for this and found the following:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/docs/voice_ip_comm/unity/5x/networking/guide/ex/5xcunet030e.html#wp1050502
Enabling Cross-Server Live Reply and Entering the Pilot Numbers of Destination Cisco Unity Servers
Do the following procedure on each Cisco Unity server in the dialing  domain. If the system is using failover, do the following procedure on  both the primary and secondary server, because most of the settings on  the Network > Dialing Domain Options page are stored in the registry.  (Registry settings are not replicated to the secondary server.)
To Enable Cross-Server Live Reply and to Enter the Pilot Numbers of Destination Cisco Unity Servers
You might just verify this has been done on the Secondary also.
    Thanks,
    Scott

  • Fatal error when trying to backup SharePoint server (Failed to set request to pause search application)

I have powershell script that is used to backup SharePoint server. It was working correctly until last week. I found this error message indicate that search application cannot be paused. I don't know what happen and what should I do to solve this issue.
Please help me find solution for this.
[20/1/2557 18:53:53] FatalError: Object Search Service Application failed in event OnBackup. For more information, see the spbackup.log or sprestore.log file located in the backup directory.
InvalidOperationException: Failed to set request to pause search application

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you got an error when you backup your SharePoint Server.
You can do the steps below, then check whether it works.
Look for any One-time timer job  for Backup/Restore and delete it (From Central Administration > Monitoring > Review Job Definitions)
Clear the timer cache following the below link:
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/jamesway/archive/2011/05/23/sharepoint-2010-clearing-the-configuration-cache.aspx
Run the below command from the SharePoint Management Shell:
    $ssa = Get-SPEnterpriseSearchServiceApplication –Identity <SearchServiceApplicationName>
    Suspend-SPEnterpriseSearchServiceApplication -Identity $ssa
Once the above steps are completed successfully start the full farm backup from the Central Administration > Backup and Restore > Farm Backup
Once backup is completed run the below command to resume the SSA
    $ssa = Get-SPEnterpriseSearchServiceApplication –Identity <SearchServiceApplicationName>
    Resume-SPEnterpriseSearchServiceApplication -Identity $ssa
    Thanks & Regards,

I am experiencing a strange issue: During a primary ACS failure, our switches are not resorting to the backup ACS for login authentication, except for enable mode. This means we can only use the emergency local login, but once logged in we cannot enable due to the switch attempting to authenticate that to the backup ACS.
Once I created the local user in the backup ACS I was able to log in, and after I removed then re-addded the primary server as a TACACS host it worked as expected - using the backup only. I can't help but think there is some minor command I am missing so that the switches will recognize the failure of the primary ACS.
What am I missing that a failure of an ACS server does not cause the switches to use other configured servers?

    Richard,
I have reviewed the information, however, the debugs are not clear enough as the only outputs displayed other than Accounting logs are the following lines:
    012697: Jan  3 22:37:16.866 GMT: AAA/AUTHEN/LOGIN (0000094B): Pick method list 'default'
    012698: Jan  3 22:37:24.743 GMT: AAA/AUTHEN/LOGIN (0000094B): Pick method list 'default'
There are known issues with IOS devices not triggering the fallback/failover to the secondary ACS/TACACS+ server when the primary returns an "ERROR" response. "ERROR" refers to a process failure on the server side dropping the request and would not be the same as User Invalid or Bad Password responses which are failures referring to the Authentication information and not the process itself.
Would it be possible for you to collect a capture on the Secondary ACS switchport while the primary is down in order to determine if the IOS device is reaching the secondary server at all?
    Known issue:
    http://tools.cisco.com/Support/BugToolKit/search/getBugDetails.do?method=fetchBugDetails&bugId=CSCsd48175
    Symptoms
AAA does not failover to the backup tacacs server defined when it receives ERROR
    from the primary server .
    Conditions
Occurs when tacacs is configured for authentication, and backup servers are
configured. When the primary server returns error due to csauth not running on
the primary server, in that case  authentication request does not fail over to
    secondary server.
    Frequency:
    Not a common scenario.
    Workaround:
    None
    NOTES
    1) If you have an ACS for Windows (3.x or 4.x) then you can install Wireshark on the Windows Server and collect the capture.
    2) If you have an ACS Appliance (3.x or 4.x) or an ACS 5.x you might need to configure a SPAN session on the switch.
After collecting the capture you can use Wireshark > Edit > Preferences > Protocols > TACACS+  > TACACS+ Encryption Key > type the shared secret value. This will  allow you to review the unencrypted packets.
You can filter the capture as well using ip.addr==x.x.x.x where x.x.x.x is the IOS device IP address.
Feel free to share the capture with me as well along with the shared secret key. I would gladly review the information.
NOTE: If the capture shows no traffic going to the secondary unit a useful test would be to configure the "Secondary" server as the primary on the IOS and verify if it works that way.
NOTE: If possible, a capture on the primary server switchport while it is down might be useful in order to verify how is the IOS determining that the primary server is down as I do not see it trying to contact the primary either... We should see atleast timeouts when contacting the primary ACS.
    Regards.

  • Can time capsule be used for wireless backup without serving as a router?

can time capsule be set and used for wireless backup without serving as a router?

Not if you want it to work.
If you do want stand alone .. ie a TC sitting all on its lonesome with no internet connection.. then reset to factory and start over..
The TC has to be in router mode so it can handle dhcp and addressing.
    Ignore all the problems.
BUT then you can connect your computer to TC for backup
    OR
you can connect to main wireless router for internet..
You cannot do both.. at the same time.
UNLESS you have ethernet connection.. to either main modem or TC.. if you have two networks and two different network clients, then you can do both at once but the setup is tricky.

  • Why Time machine don't backup my server ?

I am trying to use Time Machine to backup my server (Mac OS X server 10.5) on an external drive.
Time Machine keeps "preparing" forever and does not backup.
    Anyone knows why ?
    Thanks

is this the first backup? Preparing sometimes takes up to an hour on large systems.
There is much indexing, etc. to do before the first backup.
Check the console logs for any information.
It might be performing a "deep traversal" which the logs would show.
Be sure the backup drive is at least 3 times as large as the drive you are backing up.

  • How to restrict disk space when using time machine for client backup on server?

We have 10 OS X SL Clients backing up on xserve SL with TM. Now 1 TB disk space is used and disk is full. The clients get the massage that the latest backup could not be finished due to target disk full. Clients run just OS X Standard Software plus Parallels with windows (max. 50 GB per client)
Why does TM not delete oldest backups like with external USB HD?
How can we restrict disk space on server to eg. 750 GB for total backup space for all clients?

johndave, did anyone ever respond to your post?

  • Drive encrypted using Bitlocker...encrypting backup on Server 2008

I've seen this topic discussed a few times but with very little real explanation on how to do this.
I have several servers for several customers that now must be encrypted.  I've run a few tests with our own internal servers and one user server and the drive encryption goes off without a hitch.
Encrypting their backups however is still an issue.  Usually they are setup with 2 drives, one on site, one off.  Obviously the one on site is a theft issue so it defeats the purpose of encrypting the server if there is an un-encrypted backup.
Bit Locker to Go is an R2 feature, isn't it?  Plus when you setup a drive for Windows backup, it formats the drive so is Bitlocker even usable?
The whole idea of encrypting their drives concerns me because of recovering the data/server after a crash.  We use encrypted online back up but the need to do a bare metal restore is the part that concerns me.  I even thought of adding a third drive to the mix just to be overly redundant(paranoid).
What is the best way to handle this?  How does it work in the event of a server crash, how do you do a bare metal restore with a bit locker drive?
    Thanks

You can bitlock a portable drive for Server 2012 R2 backup as follows:
Using Essentials, the first time you use the drive
    1. Start the dashboard and go to the Storage Tab and select
    Disks
    2. Click on the new drive and add it to the backup. Give it a unique label. Backup will format it and remove the drive letter.
    3. Go to the start screen and start Administrative tools | Computer management
    4. Find Disk Management and scroll down to find your backup disk.
    5. Right click on the disk block and choose Change Drive Letter and Paths.
    Add a drive letter.
    6. Open This PC and right click on your drive. Choose
    Turn on Bitlocker.
    7. Give the disk a password and save or print the key. Choose to encrypt used space only.
    8. When Bitlock finishs encrypting the drive, click on the Manage Bitlocker link at the bottom of the progress screen. Find your disk and click the dropdown arrow. Click on
Turn on Auto-unlock. (Auto-unlock greatly simplifies swapping disks. However, my experience has been it will not reliably unlock the disk after a restart or power failure. You may have to log in for the disk to be reconnected.)
    9. You can use Disk Manager  as you did before to
Remove the drive letter. It can be handy for verifying the disk's status or distinguishing multiple disks, but you don't really need it.
    10. Close everything up. You are good to go. After this, the disk can be replaced using the normal procedures for swapping USB drives.

  • System hangs running Server Backup - Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials

I ran through the Backup Wizard, selected the System, OS, and my Data drives to backup. total output is probably about 400-500GB of data to be snapshot and backed up. It's set to automatically backup daily at 9:00pm, but upon the first backup it just sits
there. I figured I'd let it ride until the next day since I've seen backups take a couple hours before.
Well, It's more than 12 hours since it started the process, and I cannot access my server. It doesn't wake the screen, CTRL-Alt-Del doesn't do anything, and I can't remote in with RDP.
Any advice? I haven't shut it down or forced a reboot yet.

The server hangs when the backup starts, and I cannot see any error message other than after I hard reboot and see the error popup on reboot due to unscheduled shut down. Also, there is an error log in the Windows\Logs\WindowsServerBackup directory. The
log files are empty, though. They are named according to date.
    e.g. "Backup_Error-07-01-2014_02-00-06"
I have reboot the system and the same happens when I try to backup again. I do have data in the backup HDD, as I have since disabled Server Backup. After disabling server backup, the designated drive is now mounted and I can see the log file created in the
    only backup folder on it.
"Backup of volume C: has failed. The operation failed due to a device error encountered with either the source or the destination. If the source or destination volume is on a disk, run CHKDSK /R on the source or destination volume, and
    then retry the operation."
"Backup of volume D: has failed. Server execution failed"
All drives are new, and CHKDSK /R doesn't resolve anything in terms of allowing backup to proceed.
I should also note that the C: HDD is a 512GB SSD with only 36GB of data on it including the OS. D: is a 2TB HDD with only 18GB of data on it. SQL server is active during the backup process, but even ending the SQL processes doesn't change the backup outcome.
Server Backup ends up hanging regardless of everything I've tried.
I imagine Server Backup would kill any processes that may prevent it from accessing data to snapshot/backup, no?
I will add the backup HDD does have 3 files in the F:\WindowsImageBackup\NESServer\Backup 2014-01-07 020006 directory.
    @ 9:02pm 1/6/2014 (9:00pm was the scheduled start), a 2,550,784KB file
    @ 12:45am 1/7/2014, a 11,264KB file
    @ 10:49am 1/7/2014, a 272,384KB file
All three of those files were created from the same backup process. However, checking the Server Manager/Server Backup Tool, that drive doesn't qualify as containing any backup files. "The backup location does not contain any backup. Specify another
    backup location."

    Hi,
The OS partition is a Dell preinstalled volume. Since Dell indicates the FAT32 partition contains the UEFI build and should not be reformatted/converted, you could simply skip from backup as it is not related to operation system.
For more detailed information, please refer to the thread below:
Windows Server Backup Error: "Volume(s) OS have and unsupported files system and cannot be backed up."

    Hi, Mandy
Thanks a lot for replying. The problem is that the OS partition is marked as System. When creating a System State backup, the System partition is presumably included because it has to be present in order for the server to boot. You are not given the
option to skip the partition when trying to do a System State backup.

  • Restore from cold backup (rac server)

    Hi All,
    Oracle version : 10g
    OS : SunOS dixie1 5.10 Generic_118855-36 i86pc i386 i86pc
I am having cold backup of RAC server (2 nodes), I want to restore from cold backup.
The problem is that : when i performed the cold backup using rman at that time Oracle was having 3 ASM diskgroups. But unforunately that disk is no more in use due to some fault.
Now my question is how can i restore from the cold backup as when i'll restore from the cold backup this will ask for the same ASM diskgroups.Even more if i creates the same diskgroup with the same name and same configuration then my doubt is that rman will allow me to restore the same from the cold backup as ASM disk header changed now ?
    Thanks,
    Vipin

Yes.You can do these and restore/recover your database.First you need startup your ASM instance then create your ASM disk groups and do following:
1.Edit pfile and change controlfile location to diskgroup(Consder that +dgr1)
2.Restore controlfile to this disk group using backup of controlfiles(you say that is cold backup)
    rman target /
/*Instance  need starting up from pfile*/
    startup nomount ;
/*then restore controlfile, give full path of controlfile from coldbackup*/
    restore controlfile from 'coldbackup_location\coltrolfile';
    alter database mount;
    catalog start with 'coldbackup_location';
    backup as copy database format  '+dgr1';
    switch database to copy;
    alter database open;
