Backup nb205

The manual for the NB205 describes a backup procedure and specifies a cd-dvd procedure.  I want to use an external hard drive.  I can not find Backup in System Tools.

Coincidentally I found this thread while googling Verizon Sync Service Error while I was on the phone with a first-level Verizon rep who was trying fruitlessly to fix the problem.  by the time I got transferred to a Tech rep, I had followed your instructions and that fixed the sync, which is a good thing because I then lost the connection with the rep, while on my Verizon FIOS landline, I might add.
By the way, the rep just called me back and I told him what happened.  He got a laugh out of that and said they often google for the same reason to see if it is a known problem.
Next time I'll turn to forums first.

  • NB205 - very poor product and service, do not buy Toshiba!! Completely dead in 6 months

I am posting this to warn as many people as possible to avoid buying Toshiba in the future.  Not only was the product faulty, which I can understand sometimes happens w mass production.  But the service was completely unacceptable, which was the deciding factor for me.
    1.  My new Netbook NB-205/BL started intermittently shutting down for no reason (complete black screen, not even to blue screen).  By the time I returned home from my trip it had stopped working altogether.  The power light will come on, and the fan/hard disk will try to spin for a split second and then go silent and stop completely.
    2.  Upon calling tech support who walked me through a bunch of diagnostic attempts (removing and re-inserting battery, etc.), they concluded it was dead and I needed to send it in.
    3.  The only thing I really care about is my data as I had stored a bunch of invaluable photos and downloaded about $200 worth of Amazon MP3s since receiving the Toshiba NB205.
    4.  Tech support assured me they would back up the hard drive for me and ship either a fixed or new computer with all my data still intact.  They asked me to register it w their warranty department and call them back so they could send me a shipping box to send it back in.  I did all that and it's been >3 weeks and no box.
    5.  So today I called Tech Support again and the guy goes "Oh yes, you have shipped your computer in for a hard drive failure?".  At which point I had to explain how A) it's not a hard drive failure B) I haven't shipped anything anywhere because I never got the box I was promised.
    6.  Then I proceed to ask him again if my data would be safe, to which he informs me it's Toshiba policy/practice not to back up data for customers.  I found this to be unacceptable and then I didn't know who to trust so I asked for a supervisor.
    7.  This supervisor wasn't able to help me either as he further informed me that they will not back anything up for me AND that I had to pay for shipping AND pay an authorized Toshiba Repair Center to back my hard drive up.
    8.  I suggested what everyone who I've talked to has said:  Toshiba could send me a new computer since they've diagnosed the old one as being dead.  I could swap out the hard drives, or they could send me one without a hard drive.  And I could send them back the dead NB205.
    9.  NO was the answer.  Toshiba wouldn't do anything for me, because software issues are NOT under warranty.  And backing up my hard drive is considered to be a software issue.  I repeatedly told him that it's their defective hardware that is causing the need for data backup.  But this went ignored and I was told they don't cover anything in this case.
I either had to lose my data or pay probably $100 for a Toshiba dealer to back up my data for me.  Oh yeah, and there isn't one of those within 20 miles of me and I live in Silicon Valley!!  Oh yes, and they want me to pay to ship them the dead computer.
    10.  I finally asked him how he would feel if he was the customer, and if he felt this was any way to treat Toshiba customers.  He replied by saying they have a process, and this is the process!
Well the next time I and any of you are in our "process" of deciding which brand of technology to buy, I'm certainly not going to consider Toshiba anymore.  This is the second chance I'm giving Toshiba after having a very poor laptop AND service experience in 2000.  Well, it took me 9 years to give them another shot, and I'm never going to trust them again.  I told myself "well, it's a high quality Japanese brand, one that commands a premium in price that people are willing to pay so it should be an excellent product.  AND if things do go pooryly, Toshiba will stand behind their name."
I was SO wrong!!!  Let this be a message to all people out there, as I did read these forums before buying my product, but the NB205 was so new it didn't have many posts.
Fool me once, shame on you.  Fool me twice, shame on me!  I'm done with you Toshiba, it's really too bad that you will not honor your brand with fair treatment of your customers.

It isn't that difficult to back up the data from the hard drive.  You can easily do it yourself for about $20.  http://www.datarecoverytutorial.com/recover-data-from-failed-laptop-notebook/
As for Toshiba backing up your data, ALL of the manufacturer's have that same policy.  NONE of them will backup the data for you nor will they guarantee that your system will be returned with the existing data intact.  This is spelled out in the Warranty documents and is fairly common knowledge amongst most computer users.
If the data was that important you should have been backing it up to USB flash drives, a usb external hard drive, or some other backup device on a daily basis just for this very reason.  The fact that you failed to do so doesn't make it Toshiba's problem.
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

  • Just installed SSD in my NB205 - mostly happy - it does "fly" now compared to "walking" before.

I'm happy to say that the installation of a 64 GByte SSD ($73 at crucial.com on sale, $10 off) has been successful.  I used an external USB HD that I had lying around to do a backup, and the installation recovered most of my User files - the only thing I found missing was my e-mail settings, and I don't store my e-mail on the NB, since it is not my main computer.
I did have to buy, as far as I could tell, the Toshiba recovery thumb drive for $40:
    SW Media - USB-MINI NOTEBOOK-NB205-Windows 7 32bit Starter-EN for mini notebook
in order to re-install Windows 7 Starter.  Maybe someone can post with a work-around for that.  I tried to make a bootable thumb drive, but that didn't seem to work.  I would guess that the difficulty is the way Microsoft prevents pirating their OS.
The one mistake I made, was that the backup to a disk image didn't work for me, because a disk image has to be restored to an identical, or maybe a larger, disk, and I went from a 160 GByte HD down to a 64 GByte SSD.
One other attempt can be made to restore added software and the updates would be to re-install the HD and do a different backup from which I could restore the rest of the stuff.
Responses to that would be appreciated.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm glad it's flying now!
The Toshiba Recovery Media Creator should be able to create bootable USB recovery media. Did you try it?

  • NB205 hard drive compatability

    Hi all,
This is my first time posting.
Quick question... are all the hard drives for the NB205 series the same dimensions?  For example, can you replace a hard drive from an NB205-312 with a hard drive from an NB205-325?
Same question in more detail...  I have an NB205-312 which has died.  Unfortunately I downloaded a lot of music and photos since the last time I backed up the netbook.  Rather than pay a computer tech $200 to retrieve the data from the hard drive, I figured it would be cheaper to simply buy a used NB205 on eBay, put my current hard drive into that laptop and then backup the photos and music.  I can probably buy a used one for less than $100.  Once it's done I then have a new NB205.
There are a lot of NB205's on eBay, but not many specific 312 models.  There are 325's and other models available.  So will I be wasting my money if I buy a different model NB205 and try to install my current hard drive?
    Thanks!

    Hi, Jerry!
Happy new year. Your comments are always helpful. However, I made two mistakes with offline files/folders. 1) Encrypting files makes them difficult to use as recovery copies; 2) compressing them is also problematic and I will not do either again. Therefore, a straight forward copying of important files to a backup device/harddrive is simply all that needs to be done.
Moreover, working with backup systems from Windows v7 to v8(.1) and vice versa has caused problems. The aforementioned problems were no better on v8.1 (8.0) than on v7 (Pro). I hope the new Microsoft CEO will deal with these issues and ensure that the OSs can all do as they are purported to do. These processes are very important. We no longer are in the entertainment/toy market as a general rule. Most users are serious about digital technology. Thanks!

  • NB205-N210 hard drive

Hi All, i am a proud new owner of a NB205-N210 (netbook).  I have upgraded the memory and would like to install another hard drive that i already have (250g SATA).  Where is the hard drive on this thing?  I assume it is under the cover with the torx head screws but i wanted to make sure before i invest the money in a new screwdriver set.  Overall, i am very impressed with the little netbook.  Yesterday, i received the computer in the mail with 83% battery life and it ran for nearly 10hrs with the wifi on.  I am very impressed. Also, has anybody with a netbook had an issue with one of the neoprene sleave cases.  I want to make sure they are ok to use.  Thanks for your help.

  • Nb205 recovery media

Does anyone have a disk image of the recovery media for a nb205?  I didn't make one before installing Ubuntu and damaged sections of my MBR.  Toshiba does not have them available online.
    Thanks,
    Zach

Re my NB205-N325BL with OEM Windows7 (32 bit, Starter)
If I understand your comments and the User Guide, pressing "0" key will return the system to its original ("just out of the box") status using the information in the Recovery Partition on the hard drive.
A couple of questions, if I may:
(info) The original disk configuration had another partition "behind" my C: drive. Using the windows disk mgmt tools - "shrinking" C: and then "stretching", I think it was called,  I have expanded that partition, the trailing partition, to use all of the area vacated by the shrink. Current configuration is: "c:" about 100 GB and the trailing partition about 50 GB.
    (Questions)
1.Any Idea how use of the disk-embedded recovery would be manifest given the above changes?
If it is an "image" type recovery, it wants to re-write what was, where it was, correct? I dont know if in the shrinking process some of the OEM software was originally occupying some of the "shrunk" disk space, and thus "moved" to accommodate the shrink, or whether it was simply empty space.
Depending on that situation, it may be advisable for me to "rebuild" that HDD recovery partition, so as to reflect the "new" configuration. IS THAT POSSIBLE? I can see the recovery partition using disk management, at it reports as "healthy", by windows.
    2. What does the "Recovery Media Creator" bring to the party, except to perhaps act as a separate physical backup of that Recovery Partition? Will it include all the additions and configuration changes that I have made? (like user accounts and each of their files, etc.)
Any Ideas why that tool gives me a "NO RECOVERY PARTITION"? The Windows backup tools also fail (image and/or standard backup), but the "Repair Disk" creation process seemed to write to a DVD on the Toshiba "portable SuperMulti Drive" that I bought with my system. So at least I've got that going for me.
    3. Not on the topic of recovery, except that it only seems to be "recovered" by a system restart, but; Any Ideas why the Fn-Fx (Function-Fx key combinations) just seem to arbitrarily quit working from time to time? Or more appropriately, Anything you might suggest that I can try to restart them when they seem to quit? I like to use the Fn-F3 to "sleep" the system, not that going to the start menu is such a bother, but it can be disconcerting when they quit.
This was very disconcerting when I used them once to disable the touchpad (as commented in the users guide) for "easy typing". Only after SEVERAL restarts and full shutdown/start cycles did the touchpad start working again...
Lets just say I don't do THAT anymore!
    Thanks and regards

  • No HDD Recovery Area, Windows 7 backup process fails.

(similar problem to Mr. archegudnam posting)
This new Toshiba NB205 Running Win7 consistently fails attempts to use the Recovery Media Creator.
"No HDD Recovery Area" is the quoted cause. However, the Windows Administrator Disk Management Tool reports the partition to be healthy.
Additionally, Windows Backup Tool fails. No backup media is created, including disk image option failure, regardless the backup data selection criteria (windows choose or I choose ). Following the logs to the failure report indicated, specify an "unsupported file system".
All available updates (Windows and Toshiba) have been requested via automatic update tools.

    Mr. archegudnam
You are not alone. I have a new Toshiba NB205 running Windows7, and I too receive the message "No HDD Recovery Area" from the OEM Toshiba Recovery Media Creator s/w bundled on the machine, as received at purchase.
Using Windows Backup also fails, sees an "unsupported file system", will not back up or even create a simple disk image.
The only thing I have not tried yet is the image creator built into the u-lead s/s bundled with the Toshiba CD/DVD (USB) Optical Drive accessory, the one advertised alongside the NB205 on Toshiba web site.
Mr. Jim - Is there any help from Toshiba on the horizon for this issue? I have already attempted to find posted updates with the built-in update tool.

  • Can not see historical data in Time Machine backup

    Hi folks
    First my setup:
       MBP Late2012
       Samsung Evo 840 SSD
external USB 3.0 1TB as TimeMachine HD
       Mac OS X Mavericks
    Now my problem.
After updating to Mavericks I've made a full backup with Time Machine.
Then I swapped the former 500TB HDD to the Samsung Evo 840 500TB.
A clean setup of Mavericks follows.
After that I restored the Backup from Time Machine.
    Everything ok. Til now.
Because everthing works fine in the past, I did not control the Time Machine.
Today I wanna restore a File from my "Pictures" folder.
    So I opened Time Machine.
    Oops.
There I can only see the latest run.
Also in the timeline on the right side the only entries are TODAY and NOW.
I can not scroll into the past.
All windows behind the current window have a black titlebar.
In Mountain lion the titlebars are grey if there is data available
and the title contains the date of the backup.
    What is the problem?
    Is there a bug?
    Did I something wrong?
    Thanx in adv.

  • Creating a backup of functional drive removed from broken laptop

I have a new Macbook Pro running Mountain Lion that is damaged and won't turn on. I have the drive removed and can access it using a docking station attached to my iMac running 10.6.
What is the simplest way to backup the data from this drive so that after the laptop is repaired I can return my data to the Macbook Pro?

Using Disk Utility to clone a drive will automatically erase the Destination drive if it isn't already erased. To backup to a drive with stuff already on it you would need to use a backup utility like one of these:
    Suggested Backup Software
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Data Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Others may be found at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
Be sure the backup utility is NOT configured to erase all files on the destination that are not on the source. If there are files identical to those already on the drive, then they will be overwritten.

  • Manually Backup to PC - incl. Voice Memos?

After reinstall OS and new iTunes - my iPhone data wouldn't transfer to iTunes. I did manual back up (to PC) and I'm about to restore my iPhone.
What's very important for me is NOT TO LOSE VOICE MEMOS that are on my iPhone. Are Memos included in manual PC backup?
Or: A) Is there a way to get voice memos (copy, save to my PC) without using iTunes
          B) Find in my PC from backup those voice memos? (Before I take the chance - restore my iPhone and find out if voice memos made it...?)
    I have iPhone 5S(or C), using OS Win 7 64x.
    Thank you

Not sure about that, I don't use voice memos so I'm not familiar if they can be transferred to your computer via iTunes sync.  But from the Voice Memos app itself you can send them out via email and they'll be an .m4a attachment that you can save.  Just tap the send icon (rectangle with arrow pointing up).
But you cannot extract your voice memos out of your iOS backup if that's what you're thinking.

  • ASA 5505 backup interface

  • ACS 5.3 Default Backup Password

When doing a backup on any of the ACS 5.x appliances by default the backup is encrypted with PGP. What password is used for that? Is it configurable?

It is not configurable and that information wasnt made public. However, when you restore it should be able to decrypt it just fine.
You can try opening a TAC case but when I was in TAC wasnt able to find that key either.

  • Forgot password to access my Airport Time Capsule, can't restore Time Machine backup

It is stupid, I know, but after the first time I setup Time Machine in my Airport Time Capsule (6 months ago) i never had to use the password because it stayed stored in my Keychain.
Anyway, couple days ago I had to format the hard drive of my MacBook Pro and I did it thinking that I had a complete data backup stored in my Airport Time Capsule (encrypted data). It was late when I realized that I did not have the password written/stored anywhere. Nothing to do about it, just move on and start all over again.
I need to clean up my Airport Time Capsule and set it to factory default. I already accepted that I will lose all my data and it is okay. So far all I found was how to reset the wifi user/password but nothing about deleting stored data or reset to factory default without having the encrypted password. Can you please help me? Thanks in advance!

The encrypted data is not related to the Time Capsule.. that is purely Time Machine.
Very sorry for you.. it is one big danger when you encrypt.
    Reset to factory.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
Wipe the hard disk. Open the airport utility go to the disk tab. Click on erase disk.
Select just quick erase.. it just deletes the file table and is not secure but fine for your purposes.

  • Does iTunes have a default password for initial encrypted backups?

I have an iPhone that was connected to iTunes for the first time today.  It is a company device and IT has set a policy to require backups to be encrypted.
When I first plugged the phone in, iTunes automatically did a backup as it had never seen the device before.  Due to a software issue, Apple recommended that I do a restore to factory settings and then restore from backup, so once the initial backup was completed, I performed the restore to factory just fine.  However, when I attempted to restore from backup, I was prompted for a password even though I was never prompted for a password when iTunes created the backup.  I have tried every password I can think of including my company domain password, iTunes password, iPhone passcode, etc...etc...to no avail.
Does anyone know if there is some default password that iTunes using when doing an initial backup without prompting the user for a password?
