Backup (not Time Machine)

I've just bought a Mac Pro and I'm using Time Machine with an external Firewire drive to back everything up and that's working fine. However, this drive isn't portable so I also want to back up to a more portable drive I have partly as extra security but mainly so I have a copy of my home folder so I can work with all my files when I'm away with my laptop (when I get home I'd just update the files I'd changed manually).
Because Time Machine doesn't seem to support multiple drives (properly) and also because it doesn't just copy my home folder to the external drive, I need some good backup software. I used to use LaCie's SilverKeep software which did exactly what I needed but this doesn't work with Leopard.
I really want some software that I can run manually (or create schedules) so that it copies my home folder to a specified place on the portable drive so that when I look on the drive it just has an easy to open folder with all my files in the same hierarchy as on my system drive (as oppossed to say, Apple Backup which creates some kind of single file archive of everything).
Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Hmm, seems to work pretty well but I just want an up-to-date backup, I don't want it to store previous revisions of stuff (I have Time Machine to do that). I just did a test with this CCC and it wiped the other stuff on the external drive (Aperture backups) because they weren't on the source disk.
Is there anything like SilverKeeper which will basically automate a simple copy? I could simply delete the old backup at the end of a week and recopy my up to date user folder but it seems there must be some software that will make this a bit more painless?

  • Back up Question when using backup not Time Machine

Hi there, I currently have my Time capsule configured as a file server sharing my files between 3 macs on the TC's wifi and also via the back to my mac service, while outside my home. The 3 macs connected also use the TC as the time machine back up disk. This setup works fine but I have concerns about reports that TC's can just die and the files contained on it could be lost. To combat this I have set my macbook to perform a backup using the backup program once a day. This is set to backup the whole TC excluding the 3 Time capsule files to an external firewire disk. The problem seems to occur after about a day or two, when the backup program reports a failed backup due to not enough disk space but I don't understand this as the external firewire disk has enough space unless it is trying to carry out a complete backup again. Once the initial backup is done (about 6 hours) I can manually trigger a backup which completes in a matter of seconds and is labelled on the firewire disc as incremental and contains a few mb. Can any one explain this to me? and any posable fixes.
    Cheers
    Here are the figures.
    TC = 500GB
TC Files= 87GB (Excluding the 3 TM backups)
    Firewire drive 160GB
    Initial Backup file size 87.7GB
Successful Incremental Backup file size 4.2mb (done on same day as initial backup)
2nd Sucsesfull Incremental Backup file size 2.1mb (manually triggered day after initial backup)
Error backup file size 29kb (auto triggered day after initial backup)

The current version of Backup won't do a full backup (after the first one) unless you tell it to, via +Plan > Full Backup+ from the menubar. But it will back up everything that was added or changed since the last backup, so an Incremental backup can be quite large.
A clue may be lurking in the log for the failed backup.
From the main Backup screen, select the Plan in question, then from the Menubar, +Plan > History.+ Then select the "event" in question and click the +View Details+ button at the bottom.
If the log doesn't tell you much, copy and post it here (but if there's a long list of files copied, leave out most of that).

  • Backup (NOT time machine) doesn't work

I want to backup a few files to iDisk (for off site storage). The Backup program creates archive, copies files, compresses archive, and starts to upload. The modem flickers. This Uploading goes on for over an hour. The How Much Is done bar goes up to about 3/4, then the next time I look it is back to 1/2. It acts like it is stuck in a loop.
This has happened since I loaded Leopard. Time machine works good, to a Hard Drive. Backup does NOT work.
    How do I fix it??

Why not post this to the Apple - Support - Discussions - iDisk forum?

  • HT3275 Since updating OS to Mountain Lion from leopard, I get the following error message when trying to backup with time machine on external drive.  Could not complete backup to media share.  The network backup disk does not support the required AFP feat

Since updating OS to Mountain Lion from leopard, I get the following error message when trying to backup with time machine on external drive.  "Could not complete backup to media share.  The network backup disk does not support the required AFP features."  What are AFP features and how do I get Time Machine to backup to my current external backup?

This means that your NAS does not support the required encryption. Update your NAS to the latest firmware or ditch it and buy a Time Capsule (they are the most reliable when using TM).

  • Hi, I have a macbook pro with a new hard drive installed. My WD external drive backup on time machine now wont let me access the files. I get a prompt saying 'you do not have permission to access the files'

hi, I have a macbook pro with a new hard drive installed and restored. My WD external drive backup on time machine now wont let me access the files. I get a prompt saying 'you do not have permission to access the files' After my new drive was installed I plugged in time machine and it started backing up. I paused it when I realised that it was running for more than a few minutes. I now realise that it probably started backing up the new hard drive all over again. Which makes me think that the original back up must be on the WD back I cant seem to access it. Any ideas would be helpful.

i recently deleted imovie 9 .and i don't have a cd and i have not made backup from time machine ..i want it back.plz help me..

It depends how you installed it.
If you installed from your iLife 11 DVD, then you can insert the DVD and install it again.
If you purchased it from the Mac App Store, you can open the Mac App Store, go to the Purchases tab, and reinstall from there.

  • Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "Time Machine Backups".  The backup disk is not available.

I have received an error message today - Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "Time Machine Backups".  The backup disk is not available.
I am using a WD 1.5tb  Help!!!  Everything is on there and the files are not showing.  The WD SmartWare icon is on the Desktop but the Time Machine icon is not.  When I save a file I open the Time Machine file and save it in there.  What do I do?  How do I get my files back??  I do not keep anything on the macbook pro.  Help PLEASE!!!

    Hi Yaann,
Thank you for your reply.  Yes I did try that, but no luck.
After several hours of calls to a very unhelpful WD and further calls to Applecare, there was nothing anyone could do.  Out of frustration when holding the WD 1.5TB hard drive, I smacked it (NOT recommended).  Well, to my surprise the WD reappeared on my devices list.  Let me tell you, I pulled my files off as fast as I could on to my MacBook Pro.  I breathed a huge sigh of relief when I confirmed that everything transferred back to the MacBook Pro fine.  I spoke with the Applecare tech and he talked me through the set up on a new Lacie hard drive.
What I can say is that after further research into external hard drives and now personal experience - Lacie is the top of the line and you get what you pay for.  I would NEVER ever recommend a WD to anyone.  Given one, I would still through it away.
    I was LUCKY.
I must say the support and understanding I received from Applecare was outstanding!!  I would never own a apple product without applecare and from long term experience it is worth every penny.
    All the best,

I think it is remembering backing up onto previous external hard drives, which I don't own anymore.  How do I do a new full backup?
When I bought the new (used) iMac, I also bought an external hard drive for backups.  It worked fine, but my husband stole it.
Then I bought a new external hard drive (Seagate) and it worked fine for three weeks, then died.
So I just got a new external hard drive, which was put together from an internal hard drive and a hard drive enclosure.
Time machine did the first backup today, and it should have taken 9 hours like it did on the previous first time full back up.  Instead, it took 30 minutes.  That can't be right.  I want to start over and do a full backup to make sure everything gets onto my new external hard drive, but I can't figure out how to do that.  Please help.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
    tmutil compare -E
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command will take at least a few minutes to run. Eventually some lines of output will appear below what you entered.
Each line that begins with a plus sign (“+”) represents a file that has been added to the source volume since the last snapshot was taken. These files have not been backed up yet.
Each line that begins with an exclamation point (“!”) represents a file that has changed on the source volume. These files have been backed up, but not in their present state.
Each line that begins with a minus sign (“-“) represents a file that has been removed from the source volume.
At the end of the output, you’ll get some lines like the following:
    Added:
    Removed:
    Changed:
These lines show the total amount of data added, removed, or changed on the source(s) since the last snapshot.

  • Multiple iPhone backups in Time Machine

I have my wife's iPhone and she was charging it on our Mac via cable. Our iTunes is instructed not to sync automatically. We have two phones in iTunes. Child comes along and somehow resets or wipes phone: not sure which one.
My question is, if I were to enter into Time Machine is it possible to discern which backup is for which phone? The phone is not synced often and I'm guessing the last one was in September, if she even synced at all during that month .
I'm on os x10.8 which was a recent upgrade. Our previous version residing on Time Machine is SL. I have been told to be careful on the restore just in case we need to resort to other (cough) measures in order to (cough) the data.
    Thanx

Is there a way to delete multiple backups in TIme Machine and not have to delete old files one by one by slow one by one?
Yes, sort of.  You can delete indiividual backups, or all backups of selected items, via Time Machine.  See #12 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  You can only select one backup at a time, but they're deleted in a separate process, so you can select another before the first one completes.  When you exit from Time Machine, you may see one or more progress bars for the individual deletions.  (As noted there, never delete anything from your backups via the Finder.)
But you really shouldn't have to do that.  Time Machine will delete your oldest backups automatically, when it needs room for new ones.

  • How to delete the old backup in time machine?

    Hi all,
As I have use the TM for a year, the backup folder is on a network dirve. HOw can I delete the old backup (eg 6 months ago) in order to release more space?
    Thank you
    Gary

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
I'll assume you mean a NAS (Network Attached Storage) device, not a Time Capsule or external HD connected to a Time Capsule or other Mac on your network.
If so, you can delete individual backups via Time Machine. See #12 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). That may not seem to gain any space, since the backups are in a rather odd container called a +sparse bundle.+ It won't shrink automatically when you delete things, but the space will be reused for new backups.
You may be able to limit the size of the backups by limiting the amount of space available to Time Machine on the NAS, but you'll have to use whatever facilities the NAS supplies, not OSX. Some allow the disk to be partitioned as on a normal disk, or allocate space to shares.

  • Trying to backup my time machine..

I am trying to backup my time machine but keeps coming up with error 6584 can anyone help please
    <Re-Titled By Host>

First, if this is your only backup, you must make another full backup to a locally-attached external hard drive. One backup is never enough to be safe, and backing up over a network is less reliable than backing up locally. Then try each of the following steps that you haven't already taken.
    1. Restart the backup device. You can do that by disconnecting and reconnecting the power cord.
    2. Hold down the option key and select Verify Backups from the TM menu in the menu bar (not the Dock icon.) This operation may take a long time. If the menu-bar icon (a clock that runs backwards) isn't showing, check Show Time Machine in menu bar in the preferences.
    3. Erase the backup device. With a Time Capsule, you do that from within the AirPort Utility application; see its built-in help for details. All backups will be lost, so don't do this until you've backed up to another device. After erasing, select the TC again as a backup destination in the TM preference pane. The first backup should be made over a wired connection, if possible.

  • What is the easiest way to restore to a previous backup of Time Machine?

I was adding some simple album cover artwork to my iTunes collection when the computer locked up. I got the spinning beach ball and was unable to "force quit." So, I did a re-boot using the power key. I then launched iTunes and it opened properly with all the new Album Artwork. The files were not large in size and the "Album Artwork" folder is only 99.8MB.
I did a Time Machine backup yesterday and the only thing changed on the computer was the artwork. However, when Time Machine launched to do a backup it said there was 30GB(!!!) to back up?!?!?
I am assuming something got corrupted in the iTunes library file during the crash and now it thinks it has to back up part of the music.
So, that is what caused the problem. My question is, what is the easiest way to simply restore the backup the Time Machine had completed yesterday before all this happened?? It doesn't seem like there is a simple way to accomplish this. It looks like TM is used to back up specific files or folders and not to restore the computer to a previous state.
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!!

Time Machine backs up all files except those you exclude in TM prefs. It doesn't "know" what kind a file is; it just compares info about a file on the source drive to see if it has already been backed up, or if it is new or has changed and needs to be backed up again. For unchanged files or folders, TM simply creates another hard link on the backup drive.
iTunes artwork files are separate files. The assignments of artwork to particular music files are saved in another file within the iTunes application (which is actually a package, a folder containing other files). So if all you did was add album artwork, TM would back up each new artwork file, and a new copy of the hidden file within the iTunes application containing the artwork-music links.
The following is speculation on my part, but it seems logical:
TM uses records in the hidden File System Events log to identify any new or modified files. However, it is possible to have an FSE entry as to a particular file without modifying the file (e.g. open, then close). So TM doesn't "know" until it actually compares the source file with the backup file (if one exists) whether a file is new or has been modified.
    Hope this helps.

Once you have the drive connected to your Mac, click System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
    Click Time Machine
    Click Options
Be default, the hard drive will be Excluded from backups. Click the drive to highlight it, then click the "-" (minus) button at the bottom of the list to remove the drive from Excluded items.
The drive will be backed up on the next Time Machine pass
Everything above assumes that the hard drive has been formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as Time Machine will only backup drives in that format.

  • Backup to Time Machine failed due to large iMovie Library

    Hi All
    I have had issues backing up to Time Machine since upgrading to OS Mavericks and iMovie 10, the likely culprit is my large iMovie library.  I have deleted my previous iMovie events, so only have the 1 iMovie library file related to the current version of iMovie.  I have the following situation;
    - iMac HDD - 1 TB with 0.5 TB free
    - External HDD - 2 TB with 0.5 TB free (used for iMovie library which is 1.5 TB)
    - External HDD - 3 TB with 1.0 TB free (used for Time Machine backup)
Now I have just imported some additional video into my iMovie library.  When I try to do a backup I get the error "Backup Failed, Time Machine couldn't back up to "Time Machine"."  Then further details suggest "The backup disk needs 1.55 TB for the backup but only 982.04 GB are available. Select a larger backup disk or make the backup smaller by excluding files."  This seems to suggest that Time Machine wants to backup my entire iMovie library (ie, 1.55 TB)
Two questions; does Time Machine backup the entire iMovie Library each time there is a change rather than just the incremental imported files?, and how can I get my backup to work again?
