Backup of edited photos, any ideas?

Hi everyone,
Im a happy owner of LR running on a PC. (Yes you read it correctly). I have one problem with my work flow that I hope I can get some comments or suggestion on.
I import my photos into folders organized around year, disk and shoot. This structure is backed up to a secondary hard disk.
2005
2006
Disk1
Vacation
Paris
Disk2
Football
2007
Disk1
Christmas
When a "disk" folder is full, containing around 4Gb of pictures I store the whole folder to a DVD for long time storage. This is a scheme that has worked for me in the past years and it seems to work now except for one thing...
When I feel a picture needs some serious work I select Edit in Photoshop. Fine so far. The resulting picture goes into the same folder as the original. It is here that things starts to break down. I do want the picture to be associated with the original but end up in a different folder. The reason is that I do not want to burn a new DVD just to have a complete backup.
The thing I do know is to move the edited file to a folder called Edits, one for each year at the moment. Then I regularly backup this folder to a RW-DVD disk. This fulfils my needs as far as the backup to external storage goes. The remaining thing is to create some sort of association between the edited file and the original. My current approach is to store both files in a collection structure like this
Edits
2005
2006
2007
This keeps the photos together. But I would like to find a better way to do this. The best solution that I can think of is if LR would allow stacking to work across folders. If the destination of the edited files could be configured, great but not neccesary.
This works as long as the list of edited files don't grow to much. Is there anyone out there that has a better idea? I welcome any suggestion but solutions that don't interfere with my initial approach is most welcome.
Best Regards
/Thomas

Thomas,
You've brought up a complicated and confusing issue. You didn't mention one of the most perplexing parts for me. You mention editing in PS but you didn't say how much editing you do in LR, nor how you make your backups. You do know that the images LR has edited do not look like the edits have been applied if you take them from the LR folder, right? The edits are non-destructive (only in the "mind" of LR) and only applied if you view them in LR or export. So I presume you are exporting before you make your DVD backup?
I also would suggest that disk drives are very cheap now. I don't bother much with internal drives any more. Most of mine are external and the LR database and its repository are on external drives. As is the backup drive. I use something called Second Copy for backups. What you would prefer depends on your desires with respect to backup -- there are many philosophies. My "backup" is a direct copy.
I put all originals on CD or DVD. So far those are in this house, although I am planning a change to that. I sometimes put processed files on CD or DVD as well. In particular, we are scanning poor quality slides now and although the scanning program does a good job of trying to repair them, there is still a lot of hand work to be done on each one. So when I'm "finished" (is one ever finished?) I export that bunch and write a DVD.
However, I've also started a new project -- moving files to internet-based offline storage. A colleague in a photography club mentioned that she's using mozy.com. I looked into that and it didn't quite meet my needs (I use multiple computers in multiple houses) and I discovered that the web hosting company I use, bluehost.com, now offers 300G of storage to all customers. So I simply asked that my quota be raised and I'm using that for an additional off-site backup.
Which brings me to non-destructive editing. What I'm backing up there are the files directly from the repository and the LR database. I do have LR write out its metadata before I copy them. But being non-destructive, without a program to turn the XMP into edits, the files will not show the edits. Hence storing the LR database there as well.
Because everything is not yet written to the offline location (uploading is slow), I have an extra smaller disk drive on which I'm going to put the LR repository and LR database to take to our summer house to leave there so I have an offsite repository, albeit always out of date...
I would like to load all of the images from CD and DVD onto the computer before we leave, but it probably isn't going to happen. I think I have enough disk now to do that. -- It's not SO much storage because they are all jpgs and the older the digital images are the smaller they are.
My solution is not easy nor is it really satisfactory but it should save me from disaster, when I get it implemented. By which time I'll probably think up a better plan.

my iphoto 9.1 keeps crashing when I try to edit/rotate photos, any ideas?
It will let me do 1 or 2 and then will show 2 photos at once overlayed and then crash...I look for updates and it says I have the most current version...
    any help will be appreciated!
    thank you, angela

First make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

HELP!  I had iPhoto on my mac, for some reason it was not responding or damaged.   down loaded a new version but can't find my photos. any ideas please.  I thought once on the mac always on the mac.

Sorry but we need details to help
What version of the OS do you have? What has changed since iPhtoo worked?
What exactly is the problem - you say "it was not responding" - You downloaded a new version (what version)" -you can't find yoru photos" none of which is helpful
look in your applications folder - is there an Iphoto application there? If so get info and report the version
Look in the picures folder - is there an iPhoto library there? If so exactly (including exact error messages) happens if you double click on it?
what else can you tell us that might help us assist you?

i recently migrated to a new mac. in iphoto, some photos have a small flag on the upper left of the photo. any idea what that is?

That's called Flagging. It's a way to make a quick selection of photos. For instance if you're looking for the best shot to print you might go through the photos and flag candidates for further inspection. Then clicking on the Flagged Section on the left, you can see these selected photos together. You can remove flags by clicking on them, if you mouse over a shot you'll see the option to add a flag by clicking. This can also be done in the Photos menu.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • I imported events from iphoto into aperture and aperture is showing 2 photos for each picture, one original and one edited although none of the photos from iphoto had been edited. Any idea why this has happened and what I need to do to prevent this.

I imported several events for iPhoto into Aperture3 and in Aperture it shows two photos for each photo imported, one original and one edited although none of the photos imported were edited. Why has this happened and what do I need to do to prevent this in future. I have only recently got Aperture and am trying to learn as I go along using the Focal Press guide. Thanks for any help.

A photo that was rotated in iPhoto will also show up as iPhoto edited.
This is not what I found to be the case in a recent experiment using iPhoto11- I did repeat it to be sure.

Quickly, what I found is that only the ones I did actual adjustments on brought over two images.  Images that were simply rotated, had "quick fixes" or "Effects" did not bring in two images.  More importantly, among the ones with adjustments that did bring in two images, the ones with the keyword  "iPhoto Edited" appear to be nothing more than iPhoto's 6MB JPEG Previews.  The master was a 25MB RAW image.
I don't know why some users are experiencing doubles on everything, but I recommend caution in deciding which ones to remove or you may find yourself deleting masters and keeping previews.

  • Can't install Air on XP home edition (sp3) any ideas?

I'm getting the error:  An error occurred while installing Adobe AIR. Installation may not be allowed by your administrator. Please contact your administrator.
I've been all over this forum trying all sorts of proposed fixes and still have no luck. Any suggestions would be deeply appreciated.

Great news I was finally able to resolve my problem...It was related to an older version of Adobe Air still being installed on the system under (All users).
Here is a step by step fix that I used to get the Air Player installed.
Step 1. Download the Windows Installer Cleanup utility here: http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/Windows-Installer-CleanUp-Utility-Download-18442.htm l
Step2. Install the program from step one.
Step3. You will need to run the cleanup utility program by doing the following:
Step4.Go to Start=>All Programs=>Then find Windows Install Cleanup ...Double click the icon to launch the utility program.
You should see this window open:
Step5. When the window opens...look for a file named Adobe Air [1.?.?] as the version. (Mine has the new version installed so you can see it at the very top entry.
Step6. If you see Adobe Air listed with a previous version...select it and the remove button will become active. Click Remove.
Step7. The utility will remove all the previous version of Adobe Air.
Step8. Grab the latest version of the Adobe Air runtime and Install it. In my case, the new version of Adobe Air installed right away with no problems.
Summary: I think that my mistake was assuming that the installation of the windows cleanup utility was the actual cleanup process. It's not...you have to install the utility and then go to Step3 and actually run the utility after you have selected the outdated version of the Adobe Air.
    Hope this helps...Kerry

  • All my photos have another photo overlying the original photo any ideas how i can fix the problem?

unexpectedly all my photos are covered up by another photo(the same one). When I click on the photo the one underneath is revealed. How did this happen and how can i fix the problem?

Launch iPhoto with the Command + Option keys held down and run the option to rebuild the thumbnail files.  With iPhoto 8 (09) it would be the two options circled in red in this screenshot:
It could take more than one attempt to get them all.

  • Edited Photos Disappear

I am having issues with iPhoto.  OS 10.8 operating on MacBook Pro.
To edit a photo, I first duplicate the photo, then edit, crop and adjust the photo to the desired end product.  Then hit "apply" and "done."  The photo then disappears and I get the prompt "The file “HannaHead_2_2.JPG” could not be opened because it is empty."  This happens frequently with virtually any photo that I desire to edit.
Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Edit photo bar - no "done" button

When I open a photo for editing, there is no "done" button on the edit menu bar at the bottom - the space is just blank where it should be. I realized this when I watched a tutorial on the Apple web site - I had just been using the forward and backward arrows to save my edits. Any ideas why it is not displaying?

Quit iPhoto and delete your iPhoto preference file - "your username" ==> library ==> preferences ==> com.apple.iPhoto.plist - when you launch iPhoto again it will create a new fresh, default preference file - reset any personal preferences you may have changed and if you have moved the iPhoto library repoint iPhoto to the new location

  • Created document on Mac Air Pages, saved it to USB drive formatted to ExPat but on Windows 8.1 desktop, this file came up as a JPEG image.  Any ideas please?

I created a document on new Mac Air 11.6 Pages and saved it to a USB flash drive, formatted with ExFat.  However, on Windows 8.1 desktop, this shows and opens as a JPEG file rather than in MS Word.  When I try to open it with Word, it cannot be edited.  Any ideas please?

Of course Windows (Office) can't open a pages document.... you have to save as word or export to word.
I took it for granted you knew this (that's my fault). Each word processor has it's own language (programing). Saving the pages file to a disk and putting it in a windows machine then opening it is like someone mailing you a newspaper  or magazine in a foreign language you do not read and wondering why you only looked at the pictures.
Not only are you new to Apple it's now apparent you are unknowledgeable about using and understanding technology.
This is basic stuff... Some classes or books on how to transfer/exchange files from one application and operating system to another will help you... or ... just stick with one operating system and applications.
