Backup of iMovie

If I make changes to a clip in the time line in iMovie, does time machine just make changes in the individual clip in the package or does it  backup the whle  package even though only a single change was made?  If the whole package, do you have any suggestions on how to run sensible backups, so I don't run out of space on my backup hard drive.  I have over a hundred movies, and I am constantly making minor edits to  my movies.

Hi!  I'm looking at System Preferences > iCloud > Manage > iMovie.  I'm wondering what specifically iCloud stores from iMovie and if I can delete it to save room in the iCloud without negatively affecting the work I have on iMovie (which is backed up on an external drive as well).  Thanks!

  • Do you backup your iMovie Events folder?

I don't because it's huge, and I figure, I could always just re-import the original AVCHD footage. For example, my Events folder is 1.1TB and it would cripple my Time Machine backup disk.
I do backup my iMovie and iDVD Projects, however.
    A few questions:
    - do you back yours up?
    - should I?
    - if/when I do need to re-import something (maybe need to re-edit a project I did last year), will my iMovie Project be able to find the newly imported events? As long, I guess, as I use the same Event name?

My Events folder spans several external drives.
For the AVCHD events, I just back up the archive file or disk image, but I do not back up the Event.
I have some DV, 8MM, and VHS events, that I would really prefer not to have to capture again, so I back these up.
See [this post|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12472813&#12472813] for more on how I back up.
Note: I do not use Time Machine, but I think it is a great idea to use Time Machine, especially for your Project files. The reason I do not use it is it used to be very slow and crashed a lot. However, I found that this was not the fault of Time Machine at all. I had a failing internal disk drive, so Time Machine could never finish. I will add Time Machine to the mix soon.

  • I want to backup my iMovie projects

    hi ,
    i am using a MacBook Retina 2,7GHz Intel Core i7   16Gb 1600 MHz DDR3 500 gb storage capacity  -  I am using iMovie 10.0.5.
I am trying to backup my iMovie projects. I have attempted this before and I have failed to do so and lost all of my work. Please assist me in the proper way of backing up my work. Please assist.

  • Manual backup of iMovie events

    So here is my problem.
I imported a lot of footage.
I cant edit it all that fast.
I already erased the original tape of my recorder.
Its there, my hard drive is running out of space.
I have a desktop PC, the one I used before getting my MacBook, so what I wanted to do is to copy some of the folders from the iMovie event folder (under ~/Movies) to it, and then delete them. This would bring me enough space until I get my external HDD.
Will this work? Will I just have to copy the folder back or will I have to re-import and loose all my tags?
    Thanks for your help

Thank you for the information, but it only partially worked.  I can do the first part
iTunes menu bar > File > Device > backup
But there is no option to do the second part
Summary page > select backup to this computer
When I do the first part, it starts the backup immedicately, but doesn't give me any options on changing the location from the cloud to my computer and viceversa.

  • Best online backup for iMovie clips?

    Hi,
I shoot a lot of video and make movies using iMovie. I import clips from a video camera using Sandisk memory cards into iMovie.
My question is, I am looking for the best online data storage that would allow me to upload the video clips on the memory card to an online service. Then, in the future if needed, retrieve the clips of my choice and bring them either directly into iMove, or put them back onto the memory card which can be used to import the clips into iMovie.
Any recommendations? Preferably unlimited storage, and would allow me to group clips into differnt folders, ie dates or project names.
    Thanks!

I am using CrashPlan for this.
CrashPlan lets you seed your cloud backup with a 1TB disk drive that they send you, so that you only have to send online new files, or files that will not fit within 1TB.
I currently have about 2 TB backed up to the cloud. I have all my DV, all my h.264, and all my VHS and Hi8 backed up to the cloud. For my AVCHD, I only backup the archive copy from the camera, and the completed movie, because the Apple Intermediate Codec versions of the Events are too large to backup to the cloud on a timely basis. So the Archive copy is fine, and it is the first generation copy anyway. I also backup my documents folder, my iTunes library, and my iPhoto and Aperture libraries to the cloud.
I have a fast internet connection with 50 Mbs download and 10 Mbs upload.
Note: This is only for backup. I keep a local copy too.
If you make camera archives with iMovie, you can import from those. You do not have to move stuff back to the card. See this section of iMovie Help. http://help.apple.com/imovie/#mov39f84817

  • FCE - Backup for iMovie imported clips?

If I import clips into FCE, which I captured in iMovie 08, I will not have the chance to batch them in case of loss or am I mistaken?
Is it usefull to get a disk and also backup those clips?
Does an external harddrive with eSATA and only 5400rpm serve for cutting HDV material?

You are correct. DV material captured in iMovie cannot be recaptured in FCE. Nor will the audio work correctly in FCE without rendering.
If you're talking about HDV material, that can't be recaptured in FCE even if it was captured in FCE. The timecode data is lost on conversion, but you won't have the audio rendering problem.
5400rpm is kind of marginal for Apple Intermediate Codec material.

  • IPhoto Videos (iPhone backup) in iMovie 09

They display as clips in the bottom right hand window but do not behave like normal event clips. i.e. Split event before selected clip is greyed out. Help!

I have been struggling with the same issue (I have iLife 09 + 10.6.1). I spent a few hours with the Apple support to figure out the issue. Here is the cause of this problem, in my case:
In iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced, Importing: the default is to "Copy items to the iPhoto Library". I have unchecked this option, which means I don't want to copy my files into iphoto library. After upgrade to Snow Leopard, any videos imported into iphoto without copying don't get listed in iMovie.
Apple support now has accepted the bug (they reproduced it on their own machines). Of course, I don't know what that means. We may see a bug fix in the future.

  • How to backup an iMovie project that is too large for the dvd?

This may be obvious, and it was probably answered elsewhere, but I'm trying to clean off my hard drive by saving my iMovie projects to two sets of dvds (one for home and one set for safekeeping at work). When saving one project as an archive, it just says this project is too large for a disc. Is it possible to stuff it as a .sitx file and then save that onto dvd? Is there a better solution than an external hard drive (which I've had a couple of fail on me).

DVD's can only hold about 4.7 GB's of DV Stream format (the format used by iMovie).
DV Stream is 13 GB's per hour of recording so it would take 3 DVD's to "store" your data for a one hour capture.
"Export" (back to tape) or use iDVD to "burn" an MPEG-2 version of your file.
Only the "tape" version would not require some type of conversion on import.

  • Can no longer see projects in library viewer in imovie '08 and need to find a different apple editing program

Can no longer see projects in library viewer in imovie ’08 and need to find a different apple editing program
I had approximately 15 projects that I can no longer see in imovie. I have read almost every thread on this community for imovie regarding error messages associated with looking for clips. In each case I have rebuilt the project.  However, today I continually received a message to search for a .dv file. I have located the file and even changed the .dv file to .mov file and yet none of my projects will appear. I have rebooted, deleted the plist and nothing works.
I was planning on buying a new Mac in 2014 with new editing, and use my old Mac as a backup for imovie files. Very frustrated that I can’t work with any projects now! I se the files in my Movies/imovies/iprojects folder but they don’t appear in the viewer.
Does anyone have a suggestion on how to get back my projects into the viewer? Or, can someone recommend a basic program compatible with imovie 08 that I can use to import my exiting projects into?

No, Wasn't sure if I could continue to upgrade to 9.0.9 since my Mac is relatively old.
Just don't understand why I have to keep starting a project over and over again. As I type this, the imovie icon is jumping and asking for "clip 135-02-05-05;27:15" cannot be found. Without this file, the movie cannot play properly."  I have located this clip and pointed imovie to the clip, and nothing happens. I even try to locate the corresponding clip in the event viewer but it is not there.
Today is the first time I have not been able to see my projects in the viewer.

  • Back Up iMovie 6 to External Hard Drive

I have a desktop Mac with iMovie 6, with OS X, version 10.4.11. I am about to upgrade to Snow Leopard, but wanted to backup my iMovie files to an external hard drive first. I copied the .iMovieProject file onto the hard drive, and it will open from the hard drive onto the desktop with no problems.
But then I plugged the hard drive into my Mac laptop, which runs iMovie 8, with OS X 10.5.8 and tried to open the iMovie file. When I looked at the file on the hard drive, it was no longer a single file but a folder with the extension .iMoveProject. Inside, the project had been split into Cache, Media and Shared Movie folders, with one .iMovieProject file that was 12 KB and unreadable by iMovie.
So, my question is, how can I backup my iMovie 6 files to where they are readable by iMovie 8? Thank you for your help!

iMovie 7 and 8 ('08 and '09) are very different from iMovie 6 (and previous). They can't read projects created in iMovie 6.
You can use Migration Assistant to move iMovie 6 from your old Mac to the new.
Or if you remove iMovie 8, you can install iMovie 6 from your iLife '06 disc. Then reinstall iMovie 8 if you like.
Finally, it sounds like your external hard drive is PC-formatted. It must be "Mac OS Extended" when you store iMovie projects on it (even if it's just a temporary storage).

  • In iMovie 10.0.2 Why can't I find iMovie projects or events to transfer to external harddrive?

I am trying to backup my iMovie Projects and all of the media for a number of events. I have been having trouble with iMovie 10.0.2, but it could also be my computer. I am running a Mid 2010 MacBook Pro with Maverick. I have a MacMini that I would like to transfer things over to. aybe I just can't process and that is why I am having so many issues with iMovie. Regardless, I cannot find my iMovie Projects or Events in the finder and cannot seem to figure out a way to find transfer them. They seem to have been lumped into a new library (similar to iPhoto) and I cannot for the life of me figure it out. Any ideas?

Yeah, since they switched to using the iLibrary format I didn't recognize things. I figured it out and was able to transfer things. Funny enough, I was trying to solve for the problem described in the other thread.
Sadly, trying a different comp (my MacMini) I was not able to make those darned clips work. They just seem doomed. Thanks for all the help though! I shall now give you more points!

  • "Library Corruption Detected" in iMovie 10.0.3

I'm getting this error when opening movie libraries on my external drives:
We detected a possible corruption in library <EX-MovieName-WD>. Would you like to proceed with trying to open this library.
Unfortunately it is happening with SEVERAL movie files and large projects Ive been working on for months. I can browse the package contents and see that all the original files are there but is there any way to restore the edited files with the transistions and trimmed clips??? Please don't tell me I have to start over from the beginning!
Running iMovie 10.0.3 on Mavericks 10.9.2
    Thanks!

So what happens if you choose to proceed with opening the library?
Do you have a library backup, for example on Time Machine?
I have automatic dated backups of all my iMovie 10 libraries but I can't remember how I set it up and there is no mention of backups in iMovie help.  (It is doing the same thing as FCP 10.1 does).  I have never tried to restore from them though.

  • Content library not showing in iMovie 10.0

Content Library not showing.  No answer found.  It is NOT at the top as some say.  Where did it go and where is it?  What's the best alternative to this stupid iMovie program.  So frustrating.  It was working a month ago.

So what happens if you choose to proceed with opening the library?

  • Project Backup Help! No disc burning device found?

Hello, I have a iBook G4 with a SuperDrive and Iam trying to backup a iMovie project. The version of iMovie is 6.0.2. The problem is that iMovie for some reason is not realizing that the SuperDrive is there. I go to File>Burn Project to Disc..., and I get "No disc burning device found, if you have an apple supported drive check your connections." I know it is an apple supported drive because it works with all other iLife programs-including iDVD. I find this annoying especially since I need the project backed up to put on another mac. The drive I have supports DVD-R(RW) & DVD+R(RW). I would appreciate any help I can get. Thanks in advance!

    Hi-
Forrest, you're absolutley right about Tiger and DVD support, but, Patchburn will more fully allow utilization of the optical drives abilities, and provide better media support (broader compatibility).

  • Losing file info during backup to external HD

I have been trying to backup an imovie project to my lacie external HD. When I test the file - as in try to open the imovie project, I get a ton of error messages as is "the transition 01 could not be opened". Is there a way to avoid this? A better way to backup files to the Lacie? OR do I need to get a different type of drive?
    Thanks!

That link you provided mentioned reformatting the disk if it isn't in extended disk format bu using the disk utility. This is what I'm trying to do now - but of course it isn;t that simple. I can't even verify the lacie hd - so what do I do?
Hope this isn't too much to ask! You've been super helpful already.
