Backup of nohup.out

Hi,
I am working on an application in which logs are log in nohup.out file. So the file size is increasing continuously and the it is too large.
I want to take the backup of nohup.out file without starting the weblogic server in a regular interval of time.
Please help me out on the same.
Thanks.

  • Time Machine:The backup disk ran out of space unexpectedly. .....

    Hi,
I upgraded to Mountain Lion when it was released and yesterday I began getting this notice from Time Machine:
"The backup disk ran out of space unexpectedly. Time Machine will try to make more space available by removing expired backups during the next scheduled backup."
I have a one terra external hard drive with exclusively Time Machine.  It says it has 3.4 gigabytes available, but isn't deleting old backups and making room for new, like before.  I tried the "encrypting" solution, but it still keeps on giving me this message.  Should I erase and format?  If so, what option should I chose to format?
My Hard Drive has 240 gigabytes, so 1Tb should be more than enough.
    Thank you!
    Gloria

SuperDuper and Time Machine are two completely different backup utilities. If you want something like what SuperDuper does then don't use Time Machine. You have many other options that won't use up all the space on your backup drive:
    Backup Software Recommendations
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    SuperDuper!
    Synk Pro
    Tri-Backup
Others may be found at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
Do the following to erase your drive:
    Erase a Drive
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.

  • Trying to restore ipod from one that died. But restore from backup is greyed out in the itunes menu.

I have latest version of itunes on Mavericks, a brand new ipod nano, and I am trying to restore my old dead ipod from its last backup onto the new ipod. The previous (dead) ipod was inherited from my daughter and is called "Kim's ipod" and I didn't get the option to initialise with the same name when I first connected it to itunes. I suspect that might be the problem.
Restoring from backup is greyed out in the file menu.
This strikes me as a situation that shouldn't be too uncommon - I'm wondering what I am missing.
    - How to restore a new ipod from the backup of a new one
    - Why is the restore from backup option greyed out
    - Or, how to reinitialise the ipod so that the new one can have the same name as the old one in order to back it up.
Or anything else that I might have missed. FYIY the new ipod is NOT in recovery mode.

Hmm.  I came to realise iTune Match had downgraded 38 of my tracks, which I'd ripped from my own CDs long ago, with 256kbps versions.  I do have backup for the tracks, so I'd like to delete these 38 tracks (I've made a Smart playlist of them), deleting them from iCloud too; then with Match turned off, recover my originals (Add to Library) from an old Mac.
Can't do it!  As Richard Tench said at the top, from 27 July 2011, Edit > Delete is permanently grayed out if you have opted for iT Match.  And for me on iTunes 10.6.3 (Lion 10.7.4), that's not all:  Edit > Cut and Cmd-x both just produce the Bonk sound.  My Macbook keyboard has no Del key either.
But all the above are only true with Match active.  Store > Turn Off iTunes Match will ungrey Edit > Delete (& fn-bksp etc I imagine).  So I would then be able to delete the tracks locally.  But of course, if you turn off iT Match you can delete all you like locally, but they will still exist in iCloud, and if I turn on iT Match again, the lower-grade 256kbps ones will come down from the clouds to replace my CD-ripped ones again!  Won't they?
Is that right?  Is there any way to exclude these 38 tracks (out of ~6500) from iTunes Match so I can keep my better quality CD-ripped ones?  (Other than using Alt-Launch & creating a separate iTunes fileset for the 38 tracks - as you might have guessed, some of them fall right in the middle of albums.)   Help!

  • Time Machine problem: backup disk ran out of space unexpectedly

    Hi all,
I'm having trouble with Time Machine.  Each time it tries to do a backup, it errors out.
Here is the most recent log from TM Buddy:
    Starting manual backup
Backing up to: /Volumes/Time Machine Backup/Backups.backupdb
Using file event preflight for Macintosh HD
Will copy (740.5 MB) from Macintosh HD

2.43 GB required (including padding), 57.43 GB available
    Stopping backup.

Copied 111323 files (57.29 GB) from volume Macintosh HD.
    Copy stage failed with error:28
    Backup failed with error: 28
It usually errors out in the middle of trying to backup the very large "iPhoto Library (original)" file, so I went digging into this file back in time.  About a month ago, I emptied the trash in iPhoto for the first time, and the size of the iPhoto Library file shrank from 87 GB down to just 1 GB.  That seems rather extreme, and according to iPhoto, I still should have approximately 62 GB of photos remaining.  The last completed backup that Time Machine was able to make had the library file at 800 MB.  Even more strange, the current iPhoto Library file on my iMac is 83 GB.  So I think this is the reason why TM is trying to make another complete backup of this file.
I'm guessing that if TM is able to completely backup the iPhoto Library file, the errors will go away.  Does this seem like a reasonable hypothesis?
If so, then I'll need to delete files on the TM volume to make more room.  At one point last year, I had tried splitting my monolithic iPhoto Library into 3 smaller libraries, and later merged them again under the current name "iPhoto Library (original)".  These changes/instances of the libraries were all captured on TM.  If I delete the original monolithic iPhoto Library file (named "iPhoto Library") on the TM volume, will I also lose my current iPhoto library (named "iPhoto Library (original)"?  In other words, how does TM distinguish one file from another?  By the file name?  Or some other more permanent identifier?

The backup volume was full. That shouldn't happen, because TM is supposed to manage disk space by deleting snapshots as needed to make room for a new one, up to the last complete snapshot, which is never removed automatically. Normally, a snapshot won't be started if there isn't enough space for it.
First, I strongly suggest that you make a new backup (not necessarily with Time Machine) on another external drive. A single backup isn't enough to be safe.
One possibility is that you were writing other data to the volume during the backup. Apple recommends that no other data be stored on a backup volume.
If you've moved any files to the Trash on the backup volume, empty the Trash.
Sometimes a reboot will clear the error.
Otherwise, turn Time Machine OFF temporarily in its preference pane. Launch Disk Utility, select the backup volume, and run Repair Disk. That operation may take a few hours. If the volume is repaired successfully, or if no problems are found, try another backup.
If TM still isn't working right, boot into Recovery (command-R at startup) and repair the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Reboot as usual and try TM again.
As a last resort, put the backup drive aside and don't use it until you're sure you'll no longer need the data. Then erase it and start over. Do this only if you have at least one other backup device.

I keep getting the following message when I try to back up my MacBook using Time Machine: "The backup disk ran out of space unexpectedly. Time Machine will try to make more space available by removing expired backups during the next scheduled backup."
However, I have deleted everything from the external harddrive, which holds 500 GB. I have only used 38.9 GB of space on my computer. The errors being recorded are as follows:

  • TS3992 The option to select iCloud Backup under iCloud-Settings-Backup is "grayed out."  Why is that and what does this mean?

So I cannot tell if my ipad is backing up to iCloud or not.  Forgive me, but I am just figuring all this out!

Are you saying that when you go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup, "iCloud Backup" is grayed out at the bottom?  If so, is this an iPad from your employer or do you have your employer's exchange email account on it?  If you do, your employer may have installed a profile on it that prevents you from backing up to iCloud.  If that's the case you would see a setting called "Profile" in Settings>General near the bottom.

  • Message: Backup disc ran out of space!

Trying to do my first backup using Time Machine but keep as soon as backup starts, it stops and I get this message:
"Time Machine could not complete backup - disc ran out of space" -- but I'm using new external drive connected via firewire.

Is the new external drive larger than the contents of your hard drive? Is it formatted properly? (Mac OS Extended (Journaled))

  • The backup volume ran out of space unexpectedly!?!?

I have been backing up all my data to a 100GB HD for 9 months with absolutely no problem, until today it popped up and say
"The backup volume ran out of space unexpectedly. Time Machine will try to make more space available by removing expired backups during the next scheduled backup."
I still have 2.6 GB space available and the backup went on as usual, except after "preparing", the xxMB out of xxMB change together. I rebooted my macbook and same thing happened again.
Is there anything I can do? I thought TM would delete my old back ups in order to make some space for my latest ones.
    Many thanks!

Yes, usually it does. The "unexpected" part is not usual.
First, is there other data on the TM disk? If so, is it in the same partition?
Second, it sounds like TM may be trying to do a full backup (everything on your system). Have you had any of the following: Hardware repairs (if so, what?); done a full restore; gone more than a few days without a successful backup?
Third, how old is your oldest backup?
And there may be better messages in your logs. Download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget. It shows the messages from your logs for one TM backup run at a time, in a small window. If you see something there that seems suspicious, copy and post the messages here (be sure to get them all, as sometimes they overflow the small window).

Okay, so I had to re-install iTunes. My iTunes library is currently empty. I can make a new back up and the location of the songs not having changed, these will be available in my library?

  • Time machine--verify backup is grayed out on the menu.

When I go to the Time Machine menu and hit option to get the Verify Backup command, "verify backup" is grayed out. How do I verify backups?
I'm using a G-Drive Mini ext hard drive with a Mac Lion 10.7.2 machine.

I see mine is also greyed out but I know it's backing up by looking at the message as described in my first post and also by launching TM to see the backups.
If you are attempting to test the integrity of your drive you can try the Verify Disk and Repair Disk features in Disk Utility. This will work, you can also get third party applicaitons that do more in-depth checks, Drive Genius comes to mind.
I have been using TM for about 4 1/2 years, it works fine. If you want to learn more about it then I'd recommend Pondini's Time Machine FAQs & Time Machine Troubleshooting articles.

If the wi-fi remains greyed out, your device needs service.
If within warranty, it should be free.
If not, it will probably cost $199 USD + tax.

  • Nohup.out help

    Hi Guys,
Last week, my mac book pro (running tiger 10.4.6) ran out of space. When I looked at it in detail, I saw that the nohup.out file in my home directory was 46GB. I deleted the file, cleared trash, rebooted and thought life was good again.
However, a couple of days on, the file is now 8gb big. I've tried opening the file using textedit and vi, but to no avail.
Could it be possible that Terminal's standard out is going into this file? I run a constant ping (to google) as long as my mac is running just to make sure that my internet connection is ok. Could the ping output also be piped to this file?
Any help will be much appreciated
    Cheers

Tailing the nohup.out file resulted in the following being repeated again and again.
6:28:11.498 [stRelauncher ]CD is not yet mounted by OS
I have also noticed a strange terminal window that starts up with OSX that looks like this
Last login: Sat May 27 07:23:09 on console
    /tempwiz/launch.command; exit
    Welcome to Darwin!
    MacBookPro:~ divyakantbengani$ /tempwiz/launch.command; exit
    Process Id: 184
    sending output to /Users/divyakantbengani/nohup.out
    Process parent id: 178
    Process parent id: 169
[Process was terminated by signal 9]
I have no doubt that this is the process writing to nohup.out, but dont have a clue why. I then went into /tempwiz and looked at launch.command. It contained the following script
    cd /tempwiz
    nohup ./stRelauncher /Volumes/STRESR532v6/stInstall.app &
    id=`ps -o ppid -p $$ | tail -n 1`
    id2=`ps -o ppid -p $id | tail -n 1`
    echo "Process parent id: $id"
    echo "Process parent id: $id2"
    id3=`ps -o ppid -p $id2 | tail -n 1`
    id4=`echo $TERMPROGRAMVERSION | cut -d '.' -f 1`
    if test $id4 -gt 132
    then
    kill -9 $id2;
    else
    kill -9 $id3;
    fi
Now STRESR532v6 is the firmware for my ADSL router. I have no idea why/how this is getting called here. Somehow I feel it's looking for the cd and when it's unable to find it, it's redirecting the output to nohup. I'm not sure, however, what stRelauncher is. I can also confirm that there is no disk in my cd drive.
Any help will be appreciated guys.
    Thanks

  • How to backup a Scale Out File Server

Can anyone explain to me how i am supposed to backup my Scale Out File Server? It is used to host our VDI environment but we have thrown a few other minimal shares on there for stuff relevant to the VDI setup. Profile Disk/Scripts etc
    Per this topic http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/15561919-963b-4164-a307-e3696f5d21e1/adding-scaleout-file-servers-to-dpm2012-sp1?forum=dpmfilebackup
"DPM does not support protecting scale-out file servers (SOFS) for file shares.
I do not really know how to proceed. To make sure everything is backed up.

    Hi,
Scale out file server support in DPM is for VM's (and SQL DB's I think), only and to be honest because of the metadata overhead using scale out file server and CSV as a general file server is not a good choice.  To protect VM's running on a scale out
file server the VM's are backed up from the Hyper-V hosts but the Scale Out file servers do require a DPM agent on them.  SMB 3.0 has a new feature which enables Remote VSS therefore the volumes (shares) are snapped from the Hyper-V hosts.
This document will give you the basic steps (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh757866.aspx)
    hope this helps,
    Regards,
    Paul

  • Can I use Time Capsule only as a WiFi backup disk w/out having to configure it as my main router?

Can I use Time Capsule ONLY as a WiFi backup disk w/out having to configure it as my main router with my Internet modem?
Yes, you have two options here, each with advantages and disadvantages.
Option 1...connect the Time Capsule to your AirPort Extreme using an Ethernet cable connection. Turn off the wireless on the Time Capsule since your AirPort Extreme is already providing wireless.
Advantages...easy to configure, you can backup either over wireless or plug directly into one of the Ethernet ports to backup large files 3-5 times faster than wireless.
Disadvantages...none, except it requires a wired Ethernet connection to the AirPort Extreme.
Option 2....configure the Time Capsule as a wireless only hard drive.
Advantage.....you can locate the Time Capsule anywhere you want as long as it can receive a good wireless signal from the AirPort Extreme.
Disadvantages....harder to configure, backups will occur only over wireless.

  • Hard drive full! Huge nohup.out file?

I am a new mac user and have had my imac since December 06, so not very long. I mainly use my mac to edit video and found that this took up a large part of my 250GB hard drive. I deleted alot of this and freed up a huge amount of space.
Since this clear up I have only installed a few applications such as iZoom and Office, only a few GB. However, everytime I have rebooted my mac my hard drive has filled up more and more. I am now left with no free space, with messages appearing within a number of programs saying my disc drive is full. I can't even save images to my desktop.
I went through a few interent forums for help and downloaded a program called WhatSize to try and locate any large files on my mac. What I found was that my music and video folders were about 5/6 GB each, which I expected. Other than this my documents folder was around 2GB. However, at the top of the list I had a huge file called nohup.out weighing in at 198GB. Is this the problem and the file that is taking up all my hard drive?. Even with all my software and documents, there is no way they all add up to 250GB.
I couldnt find any information on the net about this nohup.out file so I have no idea if this file size is usual or not. Can I delete this file to free up space or will this corrupt my system? Like I said I am a fairly new mac user so I have no idea about any of these sort of files.
Any help with this issue will be much appreciated!
    Cheers,
    Duncan

Hi, cheers for getting back to me. I looked through some of the google searches but really couldn't understand it, so seeing as you said you couldn't find this nohup.out file on your system I decided to just delete it. At first it wouldn't let me delete it, but a quick restart of the system and it went fine.
So I now have 198GB free on my 250GB hard drive, which is shown when I click the "Get Info" option from the hard drive icon on my dektop. However, underneath this icon it says that I only have 33GB free, as if the icon hasn't updated. I tried restating to get it to update but it has remained the same. Is there anything I can do to correct/update this?
    Thanks for all your help,
    Duncan
