Backup of the content of an iPod Touch 4g 32gb

Hello everyone,
I am a very happy owner of the iPod Touch 4g and I have already put on it lots of apps movies and selected songs from my HUGE music collection.
Now I do have all my mp3s ripped at 320 or 256 but I sync my iPod touch telling itunes to do the conversion for a lower bitrate.
I do have about 120 gigabytes of music and I wonder if without all the apps on my touch i could fit that much music.
Problem is I already have a nice selection of music where i picked song after song and it was a huge work.
Question is can I possible do a backup of all my data on my mac - then erase everything on my ipod, and try to manually put all the music in my library only?

If all the music in one your computer all you have to do is to restore the iPod to factory defaults/new iPod. Then select manually manage music in itunes and select what songs you want to sync to the iPad. This article discusses manually managing music.

iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod “(my ipod name)”. Go to the Summary tab in iPod preferences and click Restore to restore this iPod to factory settings.
i click ok then iTunes says:
The software required for communicating with the iPod is not installed correctly, and you must manually eject the iPod before each disconnect. Please reinstall iTunes to install the iPod’s software.
I am NOT restoring my iPod as i know this is iTunes' problem. I went to the apple website and downloaded iTunes for mac and then installed it Installer said it was succuesful but after opening itunes i get the same problem. What do i do?

I've the same problem too.
I had made iPhone sync on my PC in the past. But my HDD went in trouble and I had to buy another and reinstall Windows, so I lost my iTunes library.
Having no sync was ok, since I was comfortable with the photos, applications and music in my iPhone.
But yesterday my iPhone went out of disk space, and my problem started. I then needed to sync. I tried to extract my paid applications from iPhone using "transfer purchases from my iPhone". Unsuccessful, since it did not copy every application. I've tried to download the applications again, but iTunes say I need to pay for them. And now, after some unsuccessful purchase transfers and backups, iTunes says "iTunes cannot read the contents of iPhone", so I think I'm forced to restore the original settings.
What should I do?
I don't want to pay again for the applications I already purchased.
I don't want to loose my application data.
I don't care about my music, photos and videos, cause I can get them elsewhere anyway.
Is there a way to save my iPhone, applications and data?

The content on my iPod touch cannot be read

My nearly 4 week old brand new iPod touch 8GB's content cannot be read on iTunes and it says that I need to restore it, which I don't want to do, so could anyone help me? I would be really grateful if someone can as I have lots of content on my iPod.

If you still get the error all you can do is restore the iPod.

iTunes is one way only, computer to iPod, except to transfer iTunes Store purchases.

The sync is one way - computer to ipod. The exception is itunes purchases: File>Transfer Purchases
You need to copy everything from the old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer, to your new one.
The ipod is ot a backup device. It simply irrors the selected content of your computer.

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.

You can't backup the iPod t iTunes then. You will have to use an existing iTunes backup.
If iCloud backup is turned on and the iPod is still working (not disabled), the iPod will automatically backup daily if an internet connection is available and the iPod is connected to a charging source.

No music in iTunes library and it wont read the content of my iPod? Help please!

So I recently updated to iTunes 10.7 and when I did, all of the content in the iTunes library was gone! i have tried many different things to get it to work, like restoring to a previous iTunes library, but it appears that all the previous iTunes libraries were also deleted when I updated! If there is no other way to get the music back than finding the original files and putting them into iTunes, I guess that will be ok.
The second problem I am having is that when ever I try to sync my iPod it takes a very long time to load, and then it says that iTunes can't read the content of my iPod and that I should restore to the factory settings, but because there is no music or apps in my iTunes library I dont want to do that, because then I will have no way of getting all of my content back on. Backup the device to the new installation
Transfer your purchases into a newly authorized library
Recover any other media using third party tools as suggested in this post
Restore the device from the backup
This process should switch the association of the device to the new library, preserving the data and settings in your apps.
May also be prudent to attempt a backup to iCloud directly from the device before you start... Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > iCloud Backup > On. It won't save any media but it would preserve the general account settings and documents in case anything goes wrong while you are trying to extract your other data.
When you get it all fixed, make a backup!

Am trying to get the contents of my iPod onto a different computer/iTunes

I got a new computer (hooray!) but unfortunately my iTunes is on old computer, and I'm giving it away. Also unfortunately, I have no idea if a) it's possible to get the contents of my iPod onto the new iTunes, and b) if so, how. So, if anybody can give me any tips, I'd really appreciate it. ^^

1). Connect your iPod to your new computer. If it is set to sync automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod.
2). When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you continue to use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
3). Once you are connected and your iPod is safely in manual mode there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. iTunes will only let you copy your iTunes Store purchases directly from an iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
For everything else (music from CDs, other downloads and including iTunes purchased songs and in some cases, videos and games) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. 4). Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.
5). I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive
