Backup Oracle VMs using a direct attached tape library

Hello all,
I'm in the process of getting a specification for a new Oracle VM host server which will run OEL VMs and host Oracle databases (10g and others), currently we're looking at getting an HP DL580 and a MSL6000 tape library using SAS connectors.
Regarding backups, I understand that Oracle VM Server doesn't have a built in mechanism for backups so would need to use a backup method from within the virtual machines.
Is it possible, and advisable, to use a tape library directly attached to the host server and use an OEL VM running Symantec Netbackup which will then backup the other VMs, if so, are there any issues or gotchas I should be aware of?
If it is possible to do this, do I connect the tape library to the VM by editing the VM config file and add the tape library devices as 'phy:/dev/xxx'
Thanks in advance,
Martin.

NDMP is for backing up NAS platforms.
Does your backup software support "LAN-Free" backup ? Typically enterprise backup software like Netbackup, TSM, Networker require a special license/agent that gets loaded on server where you are going to implement LAN-Free backups. Without that software/license servers will be fighting for tape resources and it will be a mess (if it works at all). Also you want to use dedicated HBA or port on dual HBA for tape traffic, do not mix tape and disk traffic on the same HBA/port. In big shops people configure dedicated "tape" VSANs but that would be an overkill for your current environment.

  • How to setup and Configure the SCDPM 2012 R2 on Hyper- v VM to take the Backup in Tape Library

    Hi
    I have to configured a SCDPM 202 R2 on one Hyper-V VM to take the Backup in Tape.
    Can any one suggest that we can take the Backup through SCDPM  hosted on VM in to tape Library..?

    Hi,
    Currently, Windows Hyper-v does not support tape libraries on the Vfc - this is covered in the following TechNet article.
    Hyper-V Virtual Fibre Channel Overview
    Tape library support
    Tape libraries are not supported on virtual machines configured with a Virtual Fibre Channel adapter.
    Consequently, DPM cannot support something that Windows does not support, so we have documented that Fvc tape is not supported in a VM
    Preparing for installation in a virtual environment
    So your current options are to use Iscsi attached tape library, or use a Physical DPM Server.
    Good news is both the Windows and DPM teams are working with tape library vendors to get their tape libraries certified to work in a Hyper-V VM using Vfc - expect more news about that in a future release of DPM.

  • Cluster and L1000 Tape Library

    We are planning to purchase a tape library system for backing up the data on our cluster. I was wondering if any one ever used the Sun L1000 Tape library system with NetBackup. How do you like the L1000 and NetBackup? Is the L1000 tape library reliable? What kind of throughput do you get? We have a 2-node cluster E5500/E4500. I am planning to connect the tape library to an E250 and use it as the backup server.
    Thank you in advance.

    hi sjen,
    it depends on the size of you databases and filesystems. the sun 250 should be ok, if you have enough memory. sometimes the network-interface (dfx) is a bottleneck.

  • Combining ufsdump and a tape library

    Hi All,
    I have a question with regards to multi-volume backups using ufsdump and a tape library. Reading through the ufsdump documentation, I see that it has an option "l" (lowercase L), which says "When the end-of-tape is reached before the dump is complete, take the drive offline and wait up to two minutes for the tape drive to be ready again ...". However, when I use this option, and ufsdump reaches the end of the tape, it does not offline the tape drive. It sits there, waiting for a response to the question "DUMP: NEEDS ATTENTION: Do you want to restart?: ("yes" or "no")"...at no time does the tape drive go offline, which would allow me to write a script to detect the offlining of the tape, and swap it out for a fresh one.
    Basically, what i'm looking for is a way to allow ufsdump to span >1 tapes without operator intervention by having a script detect when it needs new media, and ask the library to load the next tape. However, ufsdump doesn't relinquish control of the tape drive, so I can't pop out the tape unless I kill it...
    Can anyone suggest a solution to automating multi-volume ufsdumps to tape?
    Thanks,
    -Adam Lundrigan

    I don't think you can do this AND have a variable sized output media. You will get the restart question when it gets a tape error (which you will get if you write out too much). I think the only way you can do what you want is to conservatively figure out what would fit on a tape with compression, and giving a tape length where the length*bpi will give you that figure (ie, no errors on tape writes).

  • Disadvantages of taking user manged backup directly on tape

    Hi,
    I have oracle 10.2.0.4 database on aix 5.3 Operating system.
    My all the datafiles,controlfiles,logfiles reside on /oradb filesystem.
    I have shut down the database & listner, & without copying all the database files into another file system.
    I have inform to backup team to take backup directly on tape by giving database file liocation /oradb.
    Please let me know the disadvantages of taking backup directly on tape by using user managed backup.
    Regards,

    All the list points are advantage of rman and are not available in user-managed so are the disadvantage of user-managed.
    ==> There are simpler backup and recovery commands.
    ==> It automatically manages the backup files without DBA intervention.
    ==> It automatically deletes unnecessary backup datafiles and archived redo log files both from disk and tape.
    ==> It provides you with detailed reporting of backup actions.
    ==> It provides considerable help in duplicating a database or creating a standby database.
    ==> It lets you test whether you can recover your database, without actually restoring data.
    ==> It lets you verify that available backups are usable for recovery.
    ==> It lets you make incremental backups, which isn’t possible by any other means of backup.
    ==> It lets you perform database duplication without backups by using the network-enabled database duplication feature, also known as active duplication.
    ==> It automatically detects corrupt data blocks during backups, with the corruption relevant information recorded in the V$DATABASE_BLOCK_CORRUPTION view.
    ==> When only a few data blocks are corrupted, you can recover at the data block level, instead of recovering an entire datafile.
    ==> You can take advantage of the unused block compression feature, wherein RMAN skips unused data blocks during a backup.
    ==> Only RMAN provides the ability to perform encrypted backups.
    ==> You can use RMAN with a variety of third-party storage systems.
    ==> You can use a powerful yet easy-to-use scripting language, which lets you write custom
    backup and recovery scripts quickly.

  • RMAN Backup Direct To Tape

    Hi,
    Can anyone out there give me assistance with setting up my database in order to backup it up directly to tape, via RMAN. We have the following setup:
    MS-Windows NT4.0 SP6.0a
    Oracle 8.1.7
    Veritas Backup Exec for Windows NT Ver7.3
    Tape drive is a Compaq DLT 40/80 (x2) with a TL891 mini library.
    Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks
    Carl Scotson
    DBA - West Of Scotland Water

    If you don't already know the syntax for allocating a channel for a backup to tape here it is:
    ALLOCATE CHANNEL <channel_name> type 'sbt_tape';
    As for sending the backup to tape instead of the storage pool that will have to be setup on the media manager side. We do that for our backups with Tivoli, but it was setup to go directly to tape through the Tivoli media manager software.

  • What commands used for taking backup of oracle database using BR*Tools

    Can somebody please help me urgently to know what are the commands used for taking backup of oracle database using BR TOOLS.Also specifythe commands in detail which can be used for taking backups of oracle database ,Online Redo log files in databse using BRBACK tool,Archiving of offline, redo log files using BRARCHIVE, and Restoring a Database using BRRESTORE tool Commands(Plese specify the commands with their Syntax used).Also specify the commands with their Syntax which are used for taking backup of oracle database(online,Offline redo log files) into Tapedrives using BRTOOLS commands.
    Thanking You for helping (in advance).

    Dear Ashish,
    BRBACKUP / BRARCHIVE calls the operating system command to copy the files.
    Simple approach to get the commands is as follows.
    1. Set the BR_TRACE (as given in the SAP note 29321) and run the command for which you need to know the OS / SQL commands.
    2. This will generate the log file with the trace information. This trace has the information of the commands used by the job you have run.
    Hope this helps.

  • Hot Backups - Oracle 9i, 10g and 11g

    Are all hot backups run outside of RMAN as an OS file copy? If so, isn't this a very risky exercise.
    I understand that RMAN will check for corruption where as hot backups won't. RMAN can also track backups in a recovery catalog.
    If using a hot backup, it seems like corrupt data could be backed up with the good data.
    What exactly are the advantages of using a hot backup. It is understood that the databases can be up during a hot backup, but can't they also be up with an incremental RMAN backup?

    I think you need to read the documentation again. Check on tahiti.oracle.com
    A cold backup is when the database is shutdown (can be done by file copy or rman)
    A hot backup is when the database is running (can be done by file copy or rman)
    RMAN has the advantages of backing up at block level, and going directly to tape, and compression, and incremental backup, and block checking, and backup from ASM, and catalog ......
    File copy has the advantage of being logically simple (e.g you can see exactly what is happening when you copy a file).

  • If I need a full rman restore which backups will it use?

    Hello,
    I have a database 11.1.0.7 with 8TB. Block change tracking is enabled.
    At the weekend I take level 0 backup and during the week level 1 cumulative.
    For some weeks the level 0 backup is failing, so I only have level 1 cumulative backups taken every week day with a 4 weeks old level 0 backup.
    If I need a full rman restore which backups will it use? Will it be the last level 0 backup with the last level 1 cumulative?
    I ask this because grid crontrol tells me that the recent level 1 backups input size is smaller than last week level 1 backups and in between I dont have any level 0 sucessfull backups. Shouldn't the input size of level 1 cumulative increase until the next level 0 backup ?
    The grid reports:

    From http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/backup.111/b28270/rcmvalid.htm
    Validating Backups Before Restoring Them
    You can run RESTORE ... VALIDATE to test whether RMAN can restore a specific file or set of files from a backup. RMAN chooses which backups to use.
    The database must be mounted or open for this command. You do not have to take datafiles offline when validating the restore of datafiles, because validation of backups of the datafiles only reads the backups and does not affect the production datafiles.
    When validating files on disk or tape, RMAN reads all blocks in the backup piece or image copy. RMAN also validates offsite backups. The validation is identical to a real restore operation except that RMAN does not write output files.
    You can monitor what RESTORE VALIDATE does.
    Make precautions, so you do not damage the production DB!!!

    I'm a DBA, but I was a developer years ago (about when Oracle 7.3
    was considered a giant step forward): I installed the Oracle 10.1 db
    (a complicated job for a developer) and I got the Full Client
    installed as well, for free, so I was happy to compile one of the demo C sources
    (those that you can find in the Oracle Pro*C manuals:
    by the way, Oracle Pro*C manuals are really worth reading).
    Good luck

    Goal
    This article will show you how to install and configure your 10g Instant Client (IC) Software for the Mac.
    It will install the following packages:
    the Basic package
    the SQL*Plus package and
    the SDK package
    and then test its connectivity to an Oracle database using SQL*Plus.
    It will also show you how to setup and test a sample program, cdemo81.c, that uses the Oracle Call Interface (OCI)
    to connect to the database.
    The sample program is located under the <Instant_Client>/sdk/demo directory.
    Solution1. Download the following three (3) files from the Oracle Technology Network (OTN) website.
    You will need an account to do this.
    Macintosh OS X 10g Instant Client Software
    a. instantclient-basic-macosx-10.1.0.3.zip (32,395,622 bytes)
    b. instantclient-sqlplus-macosx-10.1.0.3.zip (326,740 bytes)
    c. instantclient-sdk-macosx-10.1.0.3.zip (293,913 bytes)
    NOTE: The above three (3) files will be updated as new patches are released for the 10g Instant Client software. 10.1.0.3 or later versions (10.1.0.x) of these files may be used similarly with this article.
    2. Save the following text into a file called tnsnames.ora:
    # If you receive an
    # ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified
    # error when running the setup script and attempting to connect to Oracle
    # from SQL*Plus then the name of your SERVICE NAME (i.e. ORCL) may require
    # that you include the DOMAIN (i.e. US.ORACLE.COM) in order to connect successfully.
    # To obtain the DOMAIN of your environment, type "hostname" from your shell
    # and it should report this information back to you. Configure your SERVICE
    # NAME to look like Example 2.
    # Example 1
    ORCL =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = database_machine.us.oracle.com)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)
    (SID = orcl)
    # Example 2
    #ORCL.US.ORACLE.COM =
    # (DESCRIPTION =
    # (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = database_machine.us.oracle.com)(PORT = 1521))
    # (CONNECT_DATA =
    # (SERVER = DEDICATED)
    # (SID = orcl)
    3. Save the following text into a file called sqlplus_script.sql:
    SELECT user FROM dual;
    SELECT sysdate FROM dual;
    SELECT 'successful ' AS TEST_RESULTS FROM dual;
    exit;
    4. Save the following text into a file called setup1:
    # ===========================================
    # MAC OS X INSTANT CLIENT 10g SCRIPT - SETUP1
    # ===========================================
    # DESCRIPTION
    # ===========
    # This script will install and configure your 10g Instant Client (IC) Software
    # for the Mac. It will install the Basic, SQL*Plus and SDK (OCI/OCCI) packages
    # and then test its connectivity to an Oracle database using SQL*Plus.
    # Once this script has completed, you will need to run the script SETUP2 to build
    # and run the CDEMO81.C sample application located under the <IC>/sdk/demo folder
    # in your newly installed Instant Client home.
    # NOTE: In order for this script to run successfully, you MUST perform any
    # necessary actions required under the SETUP section below.
    # SETUP
    # =====
    # (1) You MUST be in a directoy with ALL of the following files
    # BEFORE running this script:
    # 1 - instantclient-basic-macosx-10.1.0.3.zip
    # 2 - instantclient-sqlplus-macosx-10.1.0.3.zip
    # 3 - instantclient-sdk-macosx-10.1.0.3.zip
    # 4 - tnsnames.ora (configured properly)
    # 5 - sqlplus_script.sql (connectivity test)
    # 6 - setup1 (this file)
    # 7 - setup2 (will run this file later)
    # (2) Edit the TNSNAMES.ORA file and update it with the necessary information
    # to connect to a database on your network. Be sure to note the comments
    # in this file. You will have to change the following information:
    # SERVICE NAME (orcl or orcl.us.oracle.com)
    # HOST (database_machine.us.oracle.com)
    # PORT (1521)
    # SID (orcl)
    # (3) Go to the end of this scrip and modify the following line:
    # ./instantclient10_1/sqlplus scott/tiger@orcl @sqlplus_script.sql
    # Replace "orcl" with the SERVICE NAME you used in step (2) above.
    # (4) To run this script use the command: ". setup1"
    # BEGINNING OF SCRIPT

    # ===========================================
    # MAC OS X INSTANT CLIENT 10g SCRIPT - SETUP2
    # ===========================================
    # DESCRIPTION
    # ===========
    # This script will build and run the OCI sample application CDEMO81.C inside
    # your Instant Client (IC) software located under the <IC>/sdk/demo folder.
    # NOTE: In order for this script to run successfully
    # (A) you MUST have already run the script SETUP1 successfully
    # and
    # (B) you MUST perform any necessary actions required under the SETUP
    # section below.
    # SETUP
    # =====
    # (1) You need to edit the CDEMO81.C application PRIOR to running this script to
    # change the connection information. By default, the application will attempt
    # to connect as user SCOTT with password TIGER to a local Oracle database using
    # the BEQ-LOCAL network protocol. This will not work.
    # (A) You need to make sure you have the SCOTT/TIGER schema created in your database.
    # If not, have your DBA create it by running the script "SCOTT.SQL" from your
    # <ORACLE_HOME>/rdbms/admin folder.
    # (B) You need to modify the CDEMO81.C application to connect to the database
    # you have configured inside your TNSNAMES.ORA file.
    # (i) Open the CDEMO81.C file located under the <IC>/sdk/demo folder.
    # (ii) Find the following line of code:
    # (void) OCIServerAttach( srvhp, errhp, (text *)"", strlen(""), 0);
    # and change the two empty strings to the SERVICE NAME you are using like so
    # (void) OCIServerAttach( srvhp, errhp, (text *)"ORCL", strlen("ORCL"), 0);
    # (iii) Save the file.
    # (2) You MUST be in the initial directory where you copied all of the files listed
    # in script SETUP1. In this same location you will find SETUP2. Run SETUP2 from
    # this location.
    # (3) To run this script use the command: ". setup2"
    # BEGINNING OF SCRIPT

    # Then you did not modify the CDEMO81.C application with proper SERVICE NAME
    # information. See step 1B under the SETUP section in this script to resolve
    # this error.
    6. Take all seven (7) files and move them into the same directory on your OS where you want to install the Instant Client software from:
    1 - instantclient-basic-macosx-10.1.0.3.zip
    2 - instantclient-sqlplus-macosx-10.1.0.3.zip
    3 - instantclient-sdk-macosx-10.1.0.3.zip
    4 - tnsnames.ora
    5 - sqlplus_script.sql
    6 - setup1
    7 - setup2
    7. Open the file tnsnames.ora. Be sure to review the comments in this file. You will have to change the following information to connect to a database on your network:
    SERVICE NAME (orcl or orcl.us.oracle.com)
    HOST (database_machine.us.oracle.com)
    PORT (1521)
    SID (orcl)
    Save the file.
    8. Open the file setup1, go to the end of this script and modify the following line:
    ./instantclient10_1/sqlplus scott/tiger@orcl @sqlplus_script.sql
    Replace orcl with the SERVICE NAME you used in Step 7 above. Save the file.
    9. You are now ready to install the 10g Instant Client software for Mac OS X. From the location where your seven (7) files reside, issue the following command:
    [macosx]/oracle> . setup1
    NOTE: Be sure to include the period "." and a space " " before the word "setup1" so all environment variables persist for the current session.
    This will install the Instant Client Basic and SQL*Plus software and connect to the database specified in the tnsnames.ora file.
    10. Here is the sample output of a successful execution of the setup1 script:
    [macosx]/oracle> . setup1
    MAC OS X INSTANT CLIENT 10g SCRIPT - SETUP1
    TNSNAMES.ORA FILE
    # If you receive an
    # ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified
    # error when running the setup script and attempting to connect to Oracle
    # from SQL*Plus then the name of your SERVICE NAME (i.e. ORCL) may require
    # that you include the DOMAIN (i.e. US.ORACLE.COM) in order to connect successfully.
    # To obtain the DOMAIN of your environment, type "hostname" from your shell
    # and it should report this information back to you. Configure your SERVICE
    # NAME to look like Example 2.
    # Example 1

    [macosx]/oracle>
    11. Once you have obtained a successful execution of the setup1 script, you are ready to configure cdemo81.c to connect to the database you have configured inside your tnsnames.ora file.
    Open the cdemo81.c file located under the <Instant_Client>/sdk/demo folder. Find the following line of code:
    (void) OCIServerAttach( srvhp, errhp, (text *)"", strlen(""), 0);
    Change the two (2) empty strings to the SERVICE NAME you used in Step 7 above.
    (void) OCIServerAttach( srvhp, errhp, (text *)"ORCL", strlen("ORCL"), 0);
    Save the file.
    12. You are now ready to run cdemo81.c. You MUST issue the following command from the initial directory where you copied all of the files in Step 6:
    [macosx]/oracle> . setup2
    NOTE: Be sure to include the period "." and a space " " before the word "setup2" so all environment variables persist for the current session.
    This script will configure your environment, build and run the OCI sample code connecting to the database specified in the tnsnames.ora file.
    13. Here is the sample output of a successful execution of the setup2 script:

  • RMAN backup in HP Ultrium 3-SCSI(3mn) tape device

    Dear All
    IS it possible to take online RMAN backup in HP Ultrium 3-SCSI(3mn) tape device?
    Note: this is not a tape library, a stand alone tape device.
    Thanks & Regards
    Quazi Abdur Rab

    In RAC, Please note that you can take backup from any node and you can able to restore from any node.
    If you taking backup to disk then you must mount the same backup mount on both servers in order to able to backup and restore.
    In your case you are taking backup to FRA and from there taking to tape.
    The TSM wtih tdop agent is congiured on Node1 and not on Node 2 thats why you are not able to restore from node2.
    27029, 00000, "skgfrtrv: sbtrestore returned error"
    // *Cause:  sbtrestore returned an error.  This happens when retrieving a
    // backup file during a restore operation.
    // *Action: This error is returned from the media management software which is
    // linked with Oracle. There should be additional messages which
    // explain the cause of the error. This error usually requires
    // contacting the media management vendor.
    /u01/home/oracle:DBA>
    If you restore from FRA or using RMAN both nodes know the backup location and able to restore.
    Hope this helps,
