BackUp over WAN (with MobileMe)

Hello,
I can remotely connect to my TC (when on the road) using my MobileMe account and "Back to my Mac". I can see it on finder, connect to it, read/write to files all is well.
But I just can't do any backup with Time Machine. It says the backup disk is not available. If I try to manually select a disk, there is only the option "None" in the list, the remote TC disk is not available. Any clue ?
Thank you.

Some folks have gotten that to work, but backing-up over the internet is excruciatingly slow, at best.

  • Time machine backup over wan with bonjour: are transfers encrypted?

    Hello,
I have setup a dynamic global hostname and am sharing the connected disk over the WAN with Bonjour, and am able to backup files to the disk connected to the airport extreme over the internet when away from home. Very handy. My question is: are these file transfers encrypted? I've been searching around, but have been unable to find a definitive answer.
    From this doc: http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/documentation/Networking/Conceptual/AFP/A FPSecurity/AFPSecurity.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40000854-CH232-SW1
"Only Mac OS X Server can be connected to via AFP over SSH - AND you have to enable it at the server end. You cannot connect to a Mac OS X Client with AFP over SSH."
So, I take it this means the authentication to the disk is encrypted, but the file transfer itself proceeds in plain text?
    Thanks,
    Bob

You need to know that Time Machine backups to a USB drive on an Airport Extreme are "iffy" and +*not supported by Apple.+*
See Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Time Machine does not do encryption (or compression).

  • Airport Extreme and External Hard Drive. Backup over WAN?

    Hi
I'm new to Mac's and just got a macbook air and a airport extreme.  I connected my external hard (toshiba) drive to the AE and my computer will recognize it, but when I try to connect to it using Time Machine my external hard drive is not recognized as a device that I can backup to over my WAN.  I'm not sure if this is possible, but I would like to be able to backup over the WAN if it is possible.  Is it possible to backup using time machine over WAN using an AE and a non apple external hard drive?

Time Machine cannot backup to a hard drive unless it is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled), also known as HFS+.
You have me scratching my head about backing up through the WAN port. Normally, the WAN port would be used for a connection from a modem.....or another router.
However, if you have the AirPort Extreme configured to connect to another router via Ethernet, and the AirPort Extreme is set to operate in Bridge Mode, then you don't have a WAN port, they are all LAN ports, so it would not matter which of the ports that you used.

  • No FTP access over WAN with Airport Extreme 802.11n v7.3.2

    hi there,
I've read through a few different posts on this topic (both here and in other forums) but I can't seem to find the answers I need.
I have an AEBS n with version 7.3.2 of Airport Utility. attached to the AEBS is a hard drive. I want to enable file sharing (mostly FTP, but AFP would be fine too) to access the drive through the WAN port.
    here's what I've done:
    - connected a USB drive. This is available through my LAN and is accessible using my OSX account login & password)
    - enabled filesharing and "share disks over ethernet WAN port"
    - enabled NAT and default host on the AEBS
    - configured port mappings for FTP and ARD (I couldn't enable any other file sharing because of a port conflict. Is this because the hard drive connected to the AEBS is already set to use these?)
I created an account with DynDNS to resolve my ip to a domain name.
when I ping either my domain or the IP, I get the same results. it sees my isp but the destination host is unreachable.
port scanning my domain from 20 through 548 shows that 139, 445, and 548 are open. but no 20.
what am I doing wrong here?
    thanks in advance

  • True copy over wan with HDS

    hello
we are replicating two storage systems HDS9980 with "true copy", the replication is over stm1.
from HDS with uses cisco MDS 9200 to convert FC to GeTH and from there cisco 7600 to convert GeTH to stm1.
we use a full synchronous replication.
my question is , what improvements can we implement: such as jumbo frames , FCIP write acceleration or other suggestions?

From an MDS perspective we can go either FC or FCIP.
200km is not a problem for FC. We have 250 buffer credits standard per port which allows you to go the 200km @ 2Gbps. If you want to use 4 Gbps you will need the extended buffer credit feature which is part of the enterprise license and allows you to define up to 4095 credits per port (more than enough).
For FCIP you can use the write acceleration and hardware compression features.
Portchannelling and VSAN trunking as well as inter-vsan-routing can be used together with QoS mechanisms to optimize the connectivity for both FCIP and FC.
It all depends on how much data needs to get through and what the latency requirements are and what type of connectivity (IP, dark fiber, DWDM) you can get at what price.
You should work with HDS and your local Cisco Storage SE to sort out what is best for you.

  • Connecting Cisco AIR-CAP2602E over WAN with WLC - Procedural Details

    Hi,
I have a Wireless LAN Controller Installed in one of the subnets where some AIR-CAP2602E's are connected with the WLC. WLC acts as DHCP for the AIR-CAP2602E Devices.
I have additional AIR-CAP2602E access-points at other location (Subnet) and Need to connect them with WLC.
Challange faced by me is creating DHCP on Cisco 2950 (L2) or 3750 (L3) with DHCP option 43. Can any one has detailed configuration of enabling DHCP for specific VLAN on Cisco L2 and L3 Devices.

If you have control of the DNS environment for these network segments, just make an entry for :
cisco-lwapp-controller aliases cisco-capwap-controller (IP list) as the CAP will hunt for those two name sets.
My WLC provides DHCP support only to the wlans supported by the AP but not the AP it self..
    hope this helps

  • SCVMM over WAN

Is it possible to use SCVMM for another sites over wan with ping delay with about 60 ms?
Does the SCVMM need a lot of bandwith?
    Thanks

Hi Possible. I have deployed a VMM in HQ to manage 3 sites (using WAN) before.
In 3 sites, setup VMM Library
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/vmm-library-server-best-practices.aspx . Just a file share to store ISO, VHD base,
etc to avoid any large file to transfer through WAN.
You can check on my blog about the port that you need to open .

  • So, iDisk (great with MobileMe) is closed! Ok. I got the most expensive iCloud Plan and LOVED storing files online. Is that REALLY OVER??!! (besides Numbers', Pages', and Keynote's docs sync).. Will I REALLY have to downgrade to "free" on iCloud?!!

So, iDisk (great with MobileMe) is closed! Ok. I got the most expensive iCloud Plan and LOVED storing files online. Is that REALLY OVER??!! (besides Numbers', Pages', and Keynote's docs sync).. Will I REALLY have to downgrade to "free" on iCloud and PAY for "DropBox", "Google Drive" or "Microsft's Sky Whatever.."?!!
I could not log in to this Support Community with my UPDATED Apple ID (and this is another issue I can't believe Apple just says "NO, you CAN'T!" - deleting other (old) Apple IDs we've created by mistake or a long time ago and being able to have it all on ONE SINGLE UPDATED Apple ID - ALSO saving Apple's storage servers, etc.).
Anyway, my Apple ID for better communication is [email protected] (but I really couldn't log in here - it kept saying that the e-mail is already registered, etc. I know it, I'm trying to use it here, that's all...
So, really. Of course a lot of people don't care about the iDisk issue. That's fine, we all love and hate specific apps or software.. But why has Apple just shut it down, since it was so EASY to use (as DropBox) on all our Apple devices?!! So, we really can't upload/store any kind of files anymore and that's it?!
I used iDisk when MobileMe was still alive, and it was great to have my files from work, home, any backup (whatever we want) uploaded and synced and used in our Macs, iPhones and iPads. If we have the OPTION of an iCloud Plan (the top one, for example), but we just don't like the automatick backups for the iPhones and iPads, nor the Pictures' sync function.. Why can't we just have the SAME simple and efficient/great service of the iDisk installed in each device?!
Do we really have to go back and downgrade back to the free iCloud Option (just for keeping the e-mail) and paying extra for DropBox, Google, Microsoft, any other services?! I have nothing against them - I actually have DropBox and it works great because it REMINDS me of iDisk!! But WHY NOT just keep it simple and closed with 1 company/platform/option - Apple's iOS, OSX, etc.
That's why I decided to have a Macbook Pro, an iPhone 4S and an iPad 3rd. Generation (for example, along with other products and services such as Apple TV).. I know I'm CHOOSING to stay with 1 world, that's fine. And that's why I didn't (yet) go for a Samsung phone or another tablet.. I wanna stick with 1 pattern and I have chosen Apple's..
Just can't understand such an innovative company make such decisions (such as shutting down iDisk or not letting us just DELETE Apple IDs we do NOT use anymore).. Please, just some guidance or confirmation if that's correct: No way of uploading files others than Numbers', Pages' or Keynote's!!??
    Thank you very much!!
    Peace.

    Thank you Roger.
That's exactly what I was afraid of...
During all the time I have been a loyal customer of Apple's products and services, these have been the only 2 issues that I really can't understand (specially when we look at Apple's strategies and management)...
    1) Not being able to DELETE (simply delete or deactivate) old or duplicated Apple IDs... I have 3 different Apple IDs but only one is the real Apple ID I use for everything, with all my purchases and services (such as e-mail) related to it (Why won't Apple jus let people delet, deactivate or - at least - merge Apple IDs?! That would help everyone, including Apple when we think about costs, storage, database maintenance, etc.) - Actually, even when I gave up on trying to delete other Apple IDs, I tried to have the one I really use and have organized to use my @me.com address as the Apple ID itself (as Apple asks us to do - and makes sense, of course). But never worked. Just because I created that Apple ID with a @hotmail.com account (since it asks for a valid e-mail when you create an Apple ID, it NEVER lets me now change my Apple ID to my @me.com e-mail address - I mean JUST having my @me.com e-mail address as my primary e-mail and my Apple ID (for example, having that old @hotmail.com e-mail address out of it, cleaned..)!
    2) The other issue was this one, about iDisk. Of course there must be reasons for having it shut down, maybe the apps used by iPhone and iPad, along with the folder on Mac OSX, is way too complicated, expensive, full of bugs, I don't know. But if we decide to pay for 50GB of online storage, why even THINK about different options for files we use?! I have Dropbox, I've read about Google Drive and Microsoft SkyDrive, etc. But I just wanted to STICK with a single ALL-APPLE solution.. That is.. Pay the annual fee for the 50GB and just still keep any file I want on the cloud with iDisk. So, what Apple tells me is that if I have other files than iWork or PDF (and some few exceptions), I should actually downgrade to "free" iCloud and decide to PAY for another solution (organization), such as DropBox, Google Disk or Drive (I don't really know), Micrsoft's SkyDrive..
Of course there's the strategy of getting more and more people to use Pages, Numbers and Keynote (buying them for iOS and Mac OSX, as I already have and love them). But "killing" iDisk and just telling users to look for other storage solutions doesn't really sound like Apple.
I have seen so many questions here about both issues (deleting or merging Apple IDS + iDisk back since we pay for storage) that I really believe Apple should reconsider these issues or, at least, open the issue and let us know what would be the best "partner solution" for iCloud...
    Thanks a lot!
    All the best...
    Eduardo Rocha.

  • Why Iphone (old) backup gets priority over (more recent) MobileMe Sync?

My Iphone crashed and had to restore it.
As my Iphone backup in Itunes was a month old, I seemed to have lost all the new contact/ical/safari info I had accumulated in the meanwhile.
I obviously do not sync with Itunes as often as Mobile Me does. It however seems that the iphone (one month old) info got priority over the more recent Mobile Me. Is there a way to avoid this to happen?
With MobileMe I obviously do not really need and want to sync the iphone with itunes except to backup the phone settings.

I've had to add my MobileMe account many times, since I end up restoring my iPhone a lot. I setup MobileMe to sync my contacts, calendars, and bookmarks with my macbook as well, so even if something happened to Apple's servers, my data is still safe. I do not backup that data in iTunes though since it's being synced over the air via MobileMe. If you go into the Info Tab of the iPhone section it will tell you if it's being synced via MobileMe.

  • Time Machine "Backup Disk Not Available" over WAN

I have port forwarded port 46 (TCP and UDP) to port 548 a Mac mini server running Mac OS X 10.6.8, and I have Time Machine backup disk on it set as a share point with Time Machine support enabled. On my Mac Pro running OS X 10.8.5, I am able to connect via AFP to my server with the address "afp://my-ip-address:46" and can read and write on the backup disk share point. I tested that, and it works. When I am on the same LAN as the server, I can use that disk for Time Machine and have been doing so for years. However, I cannot do a Time Machine backup to that share point over the WAN. When I open Time Machine preferences, I can select the share point as my backup disk, but once I start the backup, it says "Backup disk not available" and fails to start. How could I fix this problem?
In case you're wondering, I forward port 46 to port 548 instead of port 548 to port 548 to minimize hacking attempts. Last time I used a default port, a computer in Taiwan started spamming SSH authentication failures.

I did find this article via Google
    <http://www.macgurulounge.com/make-time-machine-remotely-back-up-to-your-time-cap sule/>
Personally, I use CrashPlan (free option using my own disks) to backup over the internet.  It works very well when I'm away from home.  Everything is encrypted.

A customer has several offices. Each office has a separate Exchange Server. The partner was considering a single Unity deployment connected to all of the exchange servers over the WAN, but has decided against that because the latency of the WAN is too high to do this. They are looking for a best practice way of deploying Unity for these multiple Exchange servers at multiple sites. This might mean a separate Unity server for each exchange server at each site .
However, we’re wondering if there is a better way to do this. With multiple unity servers we’ll likely have different prefixes for each unity server at each location . This is something that the customer would like to avoid. We’re wondering if there any best practices for a deployment like this that we can offer as options for the customer.

I have found some related information but really customer is altogether looking for an option away from Exchange networking over WAN.
    I found:
    “Multi-Site WAN with Distributed Messaging”

Design Guide for Cisco Unity also talk as much is there in the first URL.
    Please Help!

This may be counter to your customer's desire or requirements but I must ask the question.  Has the customer considered Unity Connection vs. Unity?  Granted, Unity Connection provides integrated messaging whereas Unity is the unified messaging application; however, CUC has become Cisco's flagship messaging product over the last couple of years and I only see this expanding to be honest.  So, for new installs - I push hard on Unity Connection.  Sometimes, it's a sell but sometimes the customer has a hard requirement for UM and thus you have to go with UM.  In your scenario, your customer could potentially save a LARGE amount of money as CUC is not dependent upon Exchange at all; however, you still have the option to tie into Exchange 2003/2007 as an external service where users can access messages in a 3rd-party message store and also access calendar data and so forth.  The platform is very feature rich.  Many of my current Unity customers are migrating off of the platform to the more "agnostic" CUC platform to avoid issues caused by such dependence on AD/Exchange.  In addition, as Microsoft continues to develop and push it's own UM solution - integration for Unity is being forced to change (ex: changes to MAPI in 2010 caused problems for Cisco and required them to rework a bit of the underpinning integration points between Unity and Exchange).  With CUC, you also have the flexibility to implment a dial plan within voicemail system itself...not to mention it is extremely scalable.

  • Sharing Airport Extreme with attached HD over WAN to Windows

So I've never gotten this to work. I have three external HD's attached to my airport extreme, the extreme is set to share over WAN, and any Mac can connect with zero problem using AFP. However, I've never had a Windows computer connect successfully using Samba. I have connected over LAN on windows just fine (not with Samba, of course, just with the built in windows systems) but I've never had anyone using Samba be able to connect from over the web.
Has anyone else had this work? Any guidance to offer? A friend of mine said the Samba port (445) was closed on my IP - because this is being shared via the Extreme, I can't very well set port forwarding to deal with this issue, so I'm clueless. Help!

Your drive is most likely formatted with NTFS, which the Mac and the Airport will both read, but not write to.
The drive needs to be Mac formatted.

  • Time Capsule backup fails with MobileMe synchronization

Update:  this should have been posted to the Snow Leopard discussion area - was put here by accident.  Posted as question to:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/16560106#16560106
After working flawlessly for some time, my Time Capsule has stopped completing backups (automatic or manual) whenever MobileMe syncing is enabled - Time Machine finds the Time Capsulse, scans my files for updates and starts the upload, but then it always hangs partway through.  I've tried giving it as much as a day to see if it will continue to conclusion but it does not.  I have to re-start my system just to clear the hangup, and I've had to disable automatic Time Machine backups to stop the issue happening all the time.
Curiously though, if I go into System Preferences --> MobileMe --> Sync and disable "Synchronize with MobileMe", reboot my computer and then still ensure the MobileMe icon in the top menu bar isn't swirling, I can then initiate a manual backup which runs all the way to conclusion without problem.  I can then re-enable synchronization with MobileMe until I wish to do another Time Machine backup.
(If I disable Synchronize with MobileMe, but fail to reboot my computer, Time Machine still hangs.  Also, sometimes after disabling synchronization and rebooting, the MobileMe sync icon in the menu bar may start showing activity - if I start a manual backup during that, or if it happens during a manual backup, the backup hangs and fails.)
After many repeated failures, Time Machine prompted me about an error and recommended wiping all the backups from the Time Capsule and starting with a fresh backup.  I did that, but it did not resolve the issue.
Has anyone else seen this behaviour?  Does anyone have any recommendations on how one can fix this?
    Thanks very much!

Not much experience with either TM or MM, but...
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
    Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.

  • Time Capsule 2TB missing "Share Disks over WAN" option

I bought a time capsule about a month ago. Setup was no problem. Have a MobileMe account. Successfully setup remote access using MobileMe. Needed to select "Share Disks Over WAN" under the file sharing tab which is under the disk tab in setup in order to make it work.
Bought another time capsule yesterday and trying to setup in another location. This model does not have that "Share Disks Over WAN" option. Am I missing something? Did Apple make a change? I am not able to access this new drive remotely now, even with my MobileMe account active.

  • Where to place files and folder in shared disk over WAN

Hello, I have a new Airport Time Capsule 3TB and I want to share my disk over WAN for remote accessing.
When I log to the server with my MacBook or iPhone, I see "Data" folder, and inside it I see my Time Machine backups.
My question is: where, -in the Time Capsule disk-, do I have to place the files / folders that I want to share over WAN. I am afraid to damage or corrupt my Time Capsule backups.
    Thank you in advance.

It is not possible to partition the Time Capsule drive.....unless you.....
Pull the drive from the Time Capsule case....(voids the warranty)
Install the drive in a separate enclosure or caddy
Connect the enclosure directly to your Mac
Use Disk Utility to partition the drive
Reinstall the drive back in the Time Capsule
This is a lot of work....and should best be left to a technician.
All things considered, it would be better if you dedicated the Time Capsule for Time Machine backups only...and added another drive for your shared file needs, but few users seem willing to do this.
