Backup photo library on dvds

First time Mac owner here so forgive my Macnoobness
I want to back up my photo library onto dvds. I have close to 6000 images and it will require more than one dvd. What I am looking for is to burn my photo library without having to select my images in "groups" that will fit on each dvd. Basically, select the burn option and let the computer burn all images that can fit on a single dvd, then prompt me to insert a second dvd, etc. Can this be done?

Gary:
There is an application that might be able to take your Originals folder and burn it across multiple disks. It's called Disco. I suppose you would open the library package and drag the Originals folder onto the application and let it do it's stuff, adding new DVD's when asked for. I've not used it so can't comment on it's effectiveness.
You would not want to burn the entire library as that would include a lot of files that you're not interested in, i.e. database files, thumbnail files and the modified files. You, I'm assuming, just want to backup the original files.
NOTE: I'm not sure it will work with DVDs.
But the .Mac backup will work with both CDs and DVDs (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61791)
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Backup photo library

So with previous apps the photos were stored on the hd. Now I've transferred everything to Photos, so its on icloud. I generally don't have an issue with this, however i wouldn't trust it enough to not have backups on my hd. I remember 2 occasions where i didn't have a hard iPhone backup and had to restore from iCloud backup. Something must have got corrupted with that backup on apples servers as despite doing it numerous times my cam roll just wouldn't download fully and i ended up losing photos.
Anyway to get to my point, is there an easy way to back them all up? Obviously i can chose a particular album to download originals to my mac, but don't want to sit there ticking every single album, as i have hundreds. Plus my Photo library is stored on my local ssd and there isn't even enough space to download all the pics.
From what i can see however, there doesn't appear any other way then to do the above, then once all the pics have downloaded, to then make a copy of the Photos library.

Preferences > iCloud > check the Download Originals to this Mac option. This will result in full-resolution images being stored both, in iCloud Photo Library and in your local Photos Library. You can then continue to backup your local library as before.

  • How do I transfer my photo library to DVDs?

I am trying to transfer about 2500 photos from my MacBook to DVDs.  My DVDs have a capacity of 8.5GB but I get a window stating that I need a disk with 17GB capacity.  How can I transfer to multiple DVDs?

    1. When you burn from iPhoto it creates a mini-iPhoto Library on the disk, inclusing all the database, preview and assoicated files. This disk can only be viewed in iPhoto on another Mac. Is that what you want?
    2. iPhoto can span disks like that. The only way to do it is to select batches of Events and burn them.

  • Can't backup: Photo Library size too big

    Hey gang,
I've got about 20 pictures on my phone but it keeps saying that I've got 1.4GB of data in iPhoto when I go in to manage my backups. How can I get it to display the accurate photo information. My phone will NOT Back up and I don't have anywhere near 1.4GB. It's like it's trying to FORCE me to upgrade my iCloud storage and it's unfair.
    Any input appreciated, thanks,
    Dan P.

    What version of iPhoto?

  • Can't see the backup library to DVD any more on the File list is there any other way to backup my music library?

Backing up Library to DVD. On the latest version of iTunes there doesn't appear to anyway of backing up to DVD as a prefered way protecting purchases/Library completely.
Recently had problems with my home computer and wanted to backup my Library to DVD. So went to File on iTunes only find not there anymore, could not find any reference with help on Itunes.
Any help on this would be appreciated.

Apple removed it in iTunes 10.4. Locate the iTunes folder and back it up as you would any other.

  • Broke my Photo Library

Like other IPhoto users I've seen posting here, I found the "don't tamper with the library" prompt too late, after I mistakenly tried to trash photos in the Photo Library. Now I can't get the slideshow to work--the screen goes to black, nothing happens, and then the library screen reappears.
I am running 4.0.3. I tried to rebuild the library by launching the application with shift-option-Apple pressed. It starts to rebuild it and indicates it is repairing photos, but then the application quits and I get the "would you like to submit a bug report" prompt. And the problem persists.
I guess I must have damaged photos in the Library, because if I select certain recent additions, I can get slideshow to display those. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you.

" just copied my folders over to the external HD. It worked fine"
copying to an external HD does not mean that iPhoto will now operate from the copied library on the external HD. You have to point iPhoto to it!!! Did you do that? Because iPhoto could have very well operated the "old" library on your internal HD, and then if you did anything to the library in the internal HD, and iPhoto still operates it, it's no wonder that's all messed up.
You also say that "it's slow as mud", now assuming you have correctly pointed iPhoto to the external library on the external HD, what's the speed of teh HD? is it a 5400rpm? Most internal HD are 7200rpm. That couls vhave something to do with it (maybe).
    "Do I trash the folders"
Folders???? are you talking about the iPhoto library? and in which location? internal or external HD???
" then reload the program Iphoto 5 from my system disk?"
If you are already running iP5 there's no need to re-install it!
"I was able to move them all over to the external HD"
you moved the slide shows???? are you talking about Quicktime slide show? or modules coming from inside the iPhoto library???
"if I can backup the library on DVD or external HD and then dump all the folderS and reload"
what do you mean but dump all the folderS (S is emphasized here.... meaning more that one folder) why so many folders? Which folders are you talking about? IPhoto library is only one folder. (And yes inside there are many other folders.) but if you dump the Iphot library it is only one folder!!!! BTW never dump anything before you back it up.
To re-load it.... I'm not even sure that the library is not damaged by some of the Ventured trips you made inside the library.... and if it is damaged, copying a damaged library, will only transfer the damage back and forth!
if you wanted to talk live, and don't mind calling California, (cell phone have cheap rates- sometimes free accross country) I'd be willing to give you a hand on the phone, because there's something that is lost into the typing and terminology you use and what i perceive your are trying to say might be 2 different things, as you can see by my many questions above.
If you are up for a call, let me know , I will let you know what is my e-mail and will give you my phone # and best tie to call! You are not the first one that I have helped like that.... the ball is in your court!

  • How do you backup a large photo library?

My photos library hits 14,000 this month, what's the best way to backup? I have a 250GB Lacie D2 external drive and dvd for my routine backup. I don't want to back up the same old picture every month, know what I mean? Please share you idea..... thanks Alex

Use a back up utility that will do incremental back ups - Chronosync or DejaVu are two - but there are many others: search on MacUpdate

  • How do I create a dvd backup of library in the very latest iTunes, with windows xp?

How do I create a dvd backup of library with itunes version 11.1.4.62? Using windows xp.

    Hi meatmailbox,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
The best way to backup your iTunes library is to an external hard drive.  The article below will explain how to do this.   If you want the files on a CD or DVD, you would need to create playlists.  I'll include that information as well.

  • Does iCloud photo Library just duplicates my iCloud photos Backup? or uses the same copy?

    Hi,
So i want to enable both iCloud backup AND Photo Library. But, i was wondering, how will it be held?
After turning on the iCloud Photo Library, will the photos in the Backup get deleted? or it uses them and share them between the two services?
Or it just upload all the photos again and i'll have two copies of my photos in my iCloud?

  • How does iCloud Photo Library backup photos & save iCloud space

I was reading about how to free up some space on my iCloud account (5GB).
Since the Camera Roll is the only thing that is backed up to iCloud, I would periodically import all my photos to iPhoto and delete them from my device.  This would make the Camera Roll pictures move over to my other albums which are NOT backed up to iCloud.  Now I ran into some apple documentation which explains what exactly gets backed up on an iOS device and its reads like this:
Photos and videos on your iOS devices, unless you turn on iCloud Photo Library beta on your iOS 8.1 device. If you turn on iCloud Photo Library beta, your photos and videos are already stored in iCloud, so they aren’t included in your iCloud Backup.
So basically if I turn on this iCloud Photo Library on my iOS device, it won't back up any photos to iCloud, because they are already stored in iCloud?  What does that mean?  Is this going to free up some iCloud space if I turn it on on my device?  If so, how exactly does it work that will save me space?
    Thanks

And of those 4.3GB of backup, my Photo Library is 1.4GB.
So my question is, how do I prevent my Photo Library from being backed up to the cloud, since I already have a backup of it everytime I connect to iPhoto and it copies all those photos to my mac?
I don't know, sorry. It's supposed to work alongside Photos & iCloud, so that photos are stored only once. When it doesn't work you have a couple of options as I see it –
Delete the old backups on iCloud to hopefully start over (I don't like deleting the only backup of anything).
Forget about iCloud backups & use iTunes to backup instead, it might not be suitable if you have no computer etc.
    Buy more storage for iCloud.
I don't use iCloud backup, it bemuses me with issues like this, there is no easy way to resolve when it fails.
And one more question while we are at it...can I erase iphoto from my computer now that I have the new Photos app?
That is up to you. If you are happy you do not need it & have a backup of it go ahead & remove it. You can re-download it from the app store if it is already in your Mac App store account.

So this is a 2 part question:
    1) how to I backup the Photo Library to my new hard drive (as the last one was unrecoverable but previously backed up)
    2) how do I remove the Photo Library form my phone (preferably after backup in item 1)
    Thanks, Janis

Since it has always been very basic to backup your computer and all it's data, Apple provides no way for you to transfer music from your iPhone back to your computer.  As you know, you can re-download all iTunes purchases, but music that you ripped yourself you'll have to just re-rip again.
You can try and find 3rd party applications that might help you.  I'm sure you'll pay, however.
Let this be a very important lesson learned.
    Best.

  • I downloaded the new iphoto to my macbook pro. Now when I open it, there is a message telling me that "your photo library is damaged or unreadable and cannot be opened. Please restore from a backup." What do I do I had 16,000 pictures.....PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Try download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
