Backup Power for travel??

Does anyone know if there is a portable backup battery source for the iPhone. For instance, to use on international flights...

Well, other than the one middleamerican has been burned by (figuratively, that is)...

Oh, and there is a solar one... Let me know if you need me to dig up a link...

  • Backup power for iPhone?

Wondering if anyone has found a suitable backup power source for charging when one is not near an AC outlet? I looked at Energi to go but could not determine if the adapter would work with the iPhone. I ask because I've been giving it heavy use and had a couple of times on the commute home when the battery died. Would have been nice to be able to plug in a battery pack for some juice. There are no such products listed on the Accessories section of Apple.com. Any third party ones worth looking at?

I've seen good comments about the Javoedge, but no personal experience.

There is also this at your local Radio Shack, again no personal experience.

  • Backup power requirements?

There are many posts on this, but I haven't found the needed item. I would like to have much more than a few hours' backup power for phone and would like to have internet as well. That means plugging the ONT into a UPS. Question is, how big a UPS? So I'd appreciate knowing how much power the ONT uses when running full phone and internet service (no TV).
Router only uses about 14W, according to Kill-A-Watt, so a regular office UPS will take care of that. And I have a couple of netwbooks with 8-hour batteries. But no idea on the FiOS interface. I could check with the Kill-A-Watt by disconnecting the battery - is that safe for the system? But hoping that someone here will know.
    Thanks for your help-
    Cten

The battery does not constantly draw power. It doesn't even get warm. Feel it if you don't believe me. Just leave everything as it was and don't concern yourself.

  • Reliable battery pack for backup power?

I was looking at the Energizer brand battery pack for iPods, but I don't know if its "Touch" compatible since its not listed. Anyone have hands on experience with a good (safe) backup power device for the Touch? I have the 3g 64gb model.

So, in iTunes, when you look at the shuffle's content (in the sidebar) and click on the playlist under the shuffle, over to the right, the songs are in your desired order, correct?  Where do you look, or what do you do, that indicates the playlists are in alphabetical order?  Are you saying that when you play the songs while using the shuffle, they play in alphabetical order?
If so, when you listen to the songs on the shuffle, are you using the playlist, or are you using the All Songs list? If you are in the default All Songs list, with the shuffle's power switch set to play-in-order (the middle position), the songs play alphabetically, I believe.
The 3rd gen shuffle uses VoiceOver.  If you are in the All Songs list, you need to use VoiceOver to switch to the playlist (see manual linked below for details).  When you are in the playlist (with the shuffle's power switch set to play-in-order), then the songs should play in playlist order.
There are more details in the manual for the 3rd gen shuffle, which is online here
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/iPod_shuffle_3rdGen_UG.pdf
See page 22 for the section about setting up and using VoiceOver.  The part about switching playlists starts on page 23 (Using the Playlist Menu).

You can export ONLY Camera Roll photos and videos.

Sign in to iTunes Store (on desktop itunes) with your ID. Plug your iphone to itunes, right click on it and choose transfer purchases.Right click again and choose backup. Then you can sync with iTunes.

What is the problem with iCloud? iCloud has nothing to do with iTunes syncing.

  • Firewire power for portable hard drive

I just replaced my hard drive on my Macbook Pro, and I bought a Tango Pro external enclosure (portable) from Acomdata to house the old drive. I want to use it as a backup drive for my iMac 800 G4 flat panel running 10.4. My Macbook Pro recognizes the external portable, but my iMac does not seem to have the power necessary through the firewire port (or the USB port, but I would like to use the firewire) to spin the portable. Is there a power issue for the iMac G4 flat panel with portable hard drives?

While an older Mac (PPC) can see and use an Apple Partition Map
(APM) and Journaled HFS+ formatting for a boot system, generally.
A newer Mac can see and use, to a degree, both kinds of partition
map schemes, especially on an external drive that may support a
clone or files to be (perhaps, if capable) used by more than one
Mac. So, by default, the newer Intel-based Mac would tend to put
its favored GUID partition mapping on at attached hard disk drive
in the process of setting it up for use; however it can also use the
older standard APM on an external drive.
Also, it is best when two computer systems are expected to use
a single external hard disk drive device, that the internal drive in
that unit be set up to contain more than one partition, and the
Disk Utility can be used to set that up, too. And when using two
sets of software to create projects that may not be compatible
under both different OS X versions, you can keep those apart
from each other in the external drive in their own place.
Not saying the total and full answer is to just use the best possible
partition map for the correct vintage OS X version, but to use one
that is compatible for both the newer & older, on the external HD.
And to change that mapping scheme would erase the drive.
And I am always open to someone who is more current and has
a great deal more recent experience in these matters, to reply
and set the course straight with a short, quick, workable answer.
Now, I have to go and see about helping someone get a pile of
old firewood from the backyard they were given two years ago.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Thinking of replacing my macbook with an ipad for travel overseas, can I plug my iphone4 into the ipad for charging?

thinking of replacing my macbook with an ipad for travel overseas, can I plug my iphone4 into the ipad for charging?

    no
the USB does not out out enough power to charge anything.
And if you want to share chargers it's best to share your iPad charger with your iPhone. the iPad charger is a 10W charger, the iPod ones are 5W. So it'll charge, just not as fast as 'normal'

  • UPS backup measuring for an IPT implementation

A client of mine wants an accurate idea of how long thier voip network will stay up on backup power. I am to recommend UPS models based on these figures for thier enviroinment of 3560s and 7960/40s. Does anyone know of a good tool or web resource for these figures?
    Appreciated.

On the spec sheets for the 3560, you just need to see what the max draw is on the switch. any switch POE or not will only draw a certain amount of amps and watts from the outlet. If you figure "worst case scenario" of the draw, then use this number for the APC model you select.
for instance: the Spec sheet for the 3560 off Cisco Site:
    ? 45W (Cisco Catalyst 3560-24TS)
    ? 485W (Cisco Catalyst 3560-24PS)
? Dissipated power: 115W, 393 BTUs per hour
    ? PoE: 370W
    ? 65W (Cisco Catalyst 3560-48TS)
    ? 530W (Cisco Catalyst 3560-48PS)
? Dissipated power: 160W, 546 BTUs per hour
    ? PoE: 370W
    ? 100W (Cisco Catalyst 3560G-24TS)
    ? 540W (Cisco Catalyst 3560G-24PS)
? Dissipated power: 170W, 534 BTUs per hour
    ? PoE: 370W
    ? 160W (Cisco Catalyst 3560G-48TS)
    ? 590W (Cisco Catalyst 3560G-48PS)
? Dissipated power: 220W, 690 BTUs per hour
    ? PoE: 370W
370 Watts is the number you need figure in to the APC unit.... how long will 370 Watts run on APC model XXX
And if you less IP phones, it will run longer.... etc

  • Running on backup power message

Hi, for the last week or so I m getting a message that my mac is running on backup power. I have it connected to a standalone UPS which shows that the input is between 113-117. Any suggestions as to the cause of the problem would be appreciated.

    Pondini wrote:
You're probably having very short (in the millisecond range) spikes in your utility power (either above or below the limits), much too fast for us mere mortals to see on a display, or notice dimming lights.
Another possibility is an intermittent power connection at the input to the UPS or its connection to a branch circuit, especially if it is a different one from lights or other electrical devices that would otherwise alert you to the problem. Most UPS devices that support messaging to the OS and/or have digital readouts also have audible alarms or some other feature to alert you about this, but not always.
Reviewing the product manual or data sheet will usually help. If not, you can try temporarily connecting a small lamp to an unprotected outlet on the UPS if one is provided, or to the same outlet that the UPS is plugged into. If it flickers or dims, you have a pretty good indication of the source of the messages.

  • UPS Warning! Running on Battery Backup Power..?

I just got my first Battery Backup UPS - a Tripplite ECO750UPS. Connects to my Mac Pro with a USB cable to detect when my Mac shuts down or sleeps, in order to go into Eco "power saving" mode & turn off peripherals.
I've noticed a couple times this warning message popping up seemingly randomly - "Warning! Your computer is now running on battery backup power, save & shut down soon." No idea why. This thread - http://discussions.info.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11173663 - offered little help but let me know others are having similar issues.
Running 10.6.4 here, anyone having these problems with previous versions too?
edit: OK I think I have some insight into what is causing this. I know that whenever my air conditioner unit switches on, it causes an electrical dip - the lights noticeably dim for half a second. Each time this has happened ever since I plugged into it, the UPS battery has switched on and the warning has come up on Mac OS. So it's just happening in order to maintain a constant electrical output load.
It's not bad or wrong, it's just a minor annoyance to have the warning come up every time my AC switches on. Is there any way to turn these warnings off?

Your UPS and Mac Pro should not be on the same circuit though.
Your Mac Pro needs 1000VA UPS.
Use the UPS for other equipment in the house or your office, and try to get the A/C on its own circuit. Ideally have an electrician come in, and recommend running a new outlet to your room.
I agree totally with hatter on this. I can share many instances of hd corruption, etc, that were eventually linked back to horrible power sources.
The hundred or so bucks spent to get a dedicated circuit for "computers only" is well worth it in the long run.
Also, please note that many "consumer level" ups don't have voltage monitoring/regulation. They merely trip to battery when it detects a drop.
The higher level ups monitor and regulate voltage to keep any dips from ever reaching the computer.
Be prepared to spend $500 on a good UPS for a prosumer MacPro setup (additional internal drives, large and/or multiple displays, scanners, etc).

  • Is the iCloud a backup tool for your computer?  How do I get my data back -- off the iCloud?

Is the iCloud a backup tool for your computer?  ---- Apple care suggested using iCloud for a backup to my documents.  I do not have an iphone, ipad or laptop.  Just an iMac.  Nothing to share the data with.
Now I am unable to access some of my documents on my computer and saving documents is cumbersome because it always wants to save it in iCloud, not my computer.  The documents I am unable to open are my old MS-Word.  One is a macro enabled word doc.   I am using os x mountain lion.
After over an hour chat with apple care, the issue is not resolved.  I did not have more time to resolve the issue today and it will be continued next week.  Per apple care, I do not have any documents in the iCloud however I am almost at the free capacity with  contacts and documents.
My question is -- If I purchase backup from a clould provider - other than apple, back up my files in documents in their cloud (make sure I can open them) and then delete the link to iCloud.  Would I preserve my data? Has anyone tried this?  I am open to suggestions.
    Thanks,
    Phyllis

Is the iCloud a backup tool for your computer?  ---- Apple care suggested using iCloud for a backup to my documents.
Not really. You can store "Documents in the Cloud" but this applies only to documents created by Pages, Numbers, Preview, Keynote, and Microsoft Office documents created on your computer stored in iCloud's "iWork". Within that limited purpose, iCloud works very well.
My question is -- If I purchase backup from a clould provider - other than apple, back up my files in documents in their cloud (make sure I can open them) and then delete the link to iCloud.  Would I preserve my data?
I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean by "purchase backup from a cloud provider" but if you're considering a service such as Carbonite, I don't advocate any of them. To back up your Mac, use your own backup device - Time Capsule or an external hard disk. It's inexpensive and reliable: two elements essential for a backup strategy, that no subscription service can offer.

  • Recently backing up my ipad onto my macbook, which is the backup server for all of my gadgets.  This includes all my photos and tons of music.  The macbook said it could not backup the ipad because there was insufficient disc space to do so. What now?

I have a macbook operating OSX10.6.7.  Recently backing up my ipad which had lots of photos from a recent vacation.  I use this laptop as the backup server for all of my gadgets so it has thousands of photos and tons of music.  It just told me that it couldn't back up the ipad bc there wasn't enough disc space.  I was afraid that this would happen eventually.  What next?  Newer laptop with more space?  I'm not sure what files I could sacrifice to free up more space as most of these are important.

What size hard drive do you have in your MacBook? The cheapest options are, a larger internal hard drive, or an external drive. Or you could get a cheap desktop PC and network to it for storage. I've got one that lives in the hall with 3 Terabytes (That's 3000gb) of storage.
