Backup question - presets, metadata sets ?

What do I need to backup to ensure that my metadata sets, and other presets are backed up in the event of a hard disk failure ? I presume these are not included in the vault.

You should be backing up your boot drive on a regular basis. The vault is for backing up the Library. A remote FW800 drive and SuperDuper as a backup management program is a good way to go. eSATA would be 5%-10% faster, but require an internal card.

Planning question metadata set vs. group

Trying to figure out if I should just stay with a single metadata set and then multiple metadata groups.
For example, say there are two different assets b-roll and finished shows. (neither are uploaded from projects but one at a time as single clips)
While they are "different" assets (in some minds) they are still basic QT movies.
The difference will be during the upload, they will have different data entry fields. B-roll will have the shooter, location fields while the finished show will have director and rights fields. I will need to create different metadata groups to do that, but is there any real reason to make different metadata sets?

If you use 1 single Metadata Set you'll have both groups in the same asset regardless of the clip type and you might have some issues with users filling up the wrong group or so. If you use 2 metadata sets AND 2 groups you can separate both types of clips so there's no confusion and you'll see and will be able to catalog only the right group for that asset. You can also have more control on the permissions for both types since you can filter trait permissions, asset filter and production filter depending on the metadata set (you cannot do that with groups)

Removing default Metadata set

I am creating very specific metadata fields, groups and sets for one of our clients. however, i cannot seem to delete the custom Metadata Sets, for example: 'Show' has no relevance to us, but I can create new sets fine. Please if anyone knows how to do this or know a good workaround, any help will be much appreciated.

Sure, FCSvr is highly customisable.
Having the default metadata there gives one options, you don't have to use it all. Only the admin should ever see it if setup correctly. You see it, ignore it and move on.
Or, I may be misunderstanding your question. Are the end users seeing a field you don't want them to?
I know you can delete certain fields - but backup your database first.
Even deleting a seemingly useless (to some deployments) metadata group such as Documents, can totally wreck the database.
You can install a custom metadata set which will require a lot of work to build from scratch. If you do want to go that route it will take many man hours to construct database fields, lookups, sets, etc.

Metadata Sets... can I edit?

Is there a way to add/edit the list of Metadata Sets? Not presets, but the sets that come pre-defined. I want to add an extra field and maybe remove a few others. "Default" is close to what I want, but not close enough.

The Metadata-Viewer Preset Editor plugin makes it easy to construct new custom metadata tagsets. If you're technically minded, you can download the LR SDK, and there's a section in the documentation that explains how to edit the config files yourself. (But expect to spend at least an hour or two climbing up the learning curve.)

You don't. Email comes in either by push or when you invoke the email app. Ther is no password except when you first set up the account. If your iPad is not being used as your personal device and you need to shield emails from other users, then don't use the email app. Instead, use web mail if available from your provider.

Get/Set metadata set by XMP Custom Panels in InDesign CS

I am using XMP Custom Panels to set metadata unique to my application in InDesign CS. That works well. I would like to be able to retrieve or modify those properties with a script.
Can you identify the object that would contain the metadata set by XMP Custom Panels and the properties or methods I would use to access them?

Thanks for the confirmation. This is a serious and surprising limitation. And if Bridge isn't going to handle complex types properly, it should at least not go ahead and stick invalid data in the field, as it does now.
I guess the only way to update complex types is to use a metadata template, or another tool.

Metadata set, how did I do it?

It's two years since I created a Metadata Set called Feb 07 and now I can't remember how I did it.
Library module, Metadata panel, just to the left of the title word "Metadata" is the small panel containing Default, All, EXIF and so on and there is my very own "Feb 07". Can anyone remind me how I did it please?

We are using webcenter content 11.1.1.6 with Record Management component installed on top of it
While trying to checkin a new document from a normal checkin screen or from Manage attachments screen two options come at the top 'Switch Profile and Auxilliary Metadata set'
How can these options be disabled?

The xExternalDataSet is already an empty string on the check in page
When i append &IsJava=1, the variables have these values

xExternalDataSet:isSetDefault=1
Isn't there a config variable for this, as I see this component has come as part of record management but no option to disable when I configure record management

Custom metadata sets for Productions?

I've added a new metadata set that suits our needs, but it is not showing up as an option when creating a new production - is there some option that I missed in order to allow this, or is there a completely different process involved with creating a new metadata set for production folders? Can someone tell me what I missed or walk me through how to do that? Thank you!

Did you make sure to assign the new MD Set to Productions and not Media? If so there must be something else wrong with the way you set it up. Make sure the ID says:
paproductionyourmetadatasetname
If it does not ID this way it will not show in new Productions.

Great answer, and it led me to where to solve the problem. In the field definition screen there is a category drop down list. If you choose something other than none from the category drop down list then that field won't appear in the list of fields when you attempt to batch import a group of files.

Problems with Metadata Set and video clip size... I think....

Ok, I can't figure this one out... any help would be much appreciated.
Background:
I started server using the Video Production default customer profile. Then I created a few new metadata Sets including one called Finished Programs which is a media asset.
Problem:
When I upload a video clip and select the Finished Programs metadata set it always changes to the Media metadata set. Now this only happens when I have used MPEG Streamclip to take the video off of a DVD. If I upload a clip (mov) file that I used in Final Cut Pro it works fine.
My settings in MPEG StreamClip are Apple DV/DVCPRO-NTSC 720x480 Interlaced Scaling and Reinterlaced Chroma.
If I upload two clips at the same time and select Finished Programs metadata set, one that I used MPEG StreamClip and one that I digitized into FCP, it will place two clips in FCPserver, one with the Finished Programs and one with the Media Set.
Any ideas on how to fix this????

Could be. If it's not the metadata it must be something else. You would have to figure it out by trial and error. Maybe you should try giving it the highest priority and maybe turn off all automated scans and see if it works then. just to make sure that nothing intervenes with the process while it is going on and see if you can get it to run fully and see what the outcome is then.
I have files over 1 GB that get attached to the right medadataset. I have failures on thumbnail creation to, but FCSvr then starts the same job over and over till it succeeds.
I have never user MPEG Streamclip clips in FCSvr. Hopefully somebody else has and could share their experiences.

Forgot password for users for whom challenge questions are not set

Hi,
I have a scenario here where initially the environment property for force setting challenge questions during first login was not set to true.
But it has been set to true later. But for users created prior setting this property to true, the forgot password link is taking to a page to answer challenge questions which obviously is not working.
Is there anyway to handle this scenario without doing ADF customization? For example say, to force all previous users also to set challenge questions for whom the challenge questions are not set.

Hi, In your scenario, since user has forgotten his/her password and he has not set his answers to questions, so the only option left is calling Help Desk. Help desk guys should educate end users that go to OIM->My Information -> Set Security Questions. This is the only easy way I can think of.
