Backup questions for you

OK, so after a rousing discussion with my husband - here are my questions (I should add that this is keeping me from installing iLife '09 b/c I need the storage drive to make the space and consolidate/move libraries!):
1) Do you consider your photo sharing website part of your photo "Back up" plan? I have Phanfare's unlimited plan and have most of my photos there (60+ GB and growing) - meaning, there is no photo I add that doesn't go there if it's worth viewing, but I haven't really considered that "back up" as compared to external HDD, online back up companies (like Mozy) and physical back up. In my mind, that's not the complete files, just the photos. What's your take on the issue? (I should note that Phanfare offers a back up program where they send you DVDs of your photos quarterly but I didn't pay for it.)
2) Are you backing up 50+GB or more photo libraries (100+ GB) online (mostly b/c just incremental back up when photos are loaded - doesn't take that long) or just locally on external HDD or on portable HDD. Or, is that - as my husband contends - just not a great use of online given the file sizes.
3) Is there are particularly "mac friendly" online back up company? Or, does it really not matter. I get nervous with all the Mac structures (libraries, events, projects, packages) that something in an online company translation may fall apart.
I have a new 2 TB My Book (already have a 1 TB My Book connected) and I'm trying to decide if I should set it up RAID and duplicate my "essential" libraries OR just take the space locally in full, do one regular process of back up locally and one back up online (in addition to portable). I use the My Book as an extension of my hard drive now - and love that. Planning on putting most of my libraries on it once this one is set up (instead of locally - they're getting too big). So, I'm not sure about taking the whole TB out of the 2 TB drive for the RAID mirroring system.
Thanks for the answers / advice -

That is backup for your photos - but not for your iPhoto library (albums, projects, keywords, ratings, etc)

I have two local hard drives - one 750 GB I clone everything - system, iPhoto library, etc - to daily and a 1 TB Time Capsule that I run Time Machine to (hourly incremental backups) - plus I back up photos and music on DVD a couple of times a year
I also back up some things to my iDisk but the iPhoto library got too big to do that reasonably

  • Question for you Deathstalker

    Hi Richard.
I have a question for you about the MSI K7N2G-LISR (NVIDIA nForce2 IGP) motherboard we were discussing.
If this board has integrated graphics, why do I need a video card? I had someone else ask me the same thing but I didn't know the answer.
    Thanks
    Mike

Hi Mike, I not sure if I should step in and put in this reply, but couldn't stop myself not to as this is quite important.
Mobos that comes with on board/integrated/shared Memory Graphics usually dun ends up giving you good framerates and graphics details. I have a friend who spent Sin 2000 over dollars to D.I.Y a creative slix look alike com with on board graphics has regretted not getting a proper mobo with AGP slot. The graphics that are produced on his com are like running a TNT2 Riva 32MB card for games like warcraft 3 and any latest 1st person shooting games... juz imagining it...
I'm the type of person who are more for graphics and smoothness of gameplays and details of model as I do some 3D designs and picture designing. I juz dun understand why there are still people going for onboard graphics and complaining about poor fps produced which they should have blame themselves for it X( ... It's good that you've pointed out your doubts on that...
    All the Best...  :D !!!

  • Help with simple OS upgrade and backup questions for a dumb old previous PC user...?

    Ok...have mercy on me, please...
I am not completely dumb, I know typical board etiquette, and I have searched for various answers (and found many)...but I just want to confirm my personal "research" and get all of this clear up before I proceed with this insanity.  I know I could probably search more, but this is taking hours, because of all my various questions, one leads to 10 more...
I have an iMac with Mac OS X Version 10.5.8 (which, though not mentioned anywhere?...is apparently "Leopard", right?  Told you I was dumb...)
Processor:  3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory: 2 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
My main goal:  install an app that was in the Mac App store.
However, with Leopard, I can't access the Mac App store with Leopard, apparently.
I click on the Mac App store, and up pops up a Lion advertisement...telling me I should upgrade.  Ok, fine...probably a good idea, anyway...
But how do you upgrade to Lion?  Apparently through the Mac App store!
The web-redirects on the Apple site are amusing...taking me on an endless cycle...purchase Lion in the app store...click..."you need to upgrade to Lion"...OK...click..."you need Lion at the app store"...OK...click..."you need to upgrade to Lion to get to the app store"....etc.
OK...fine...google searches...ahh, I need to upgrade to Snow Leopard first, apparently!  Yes?
(Maybe the Apple redirects should detect that I have Leopard, and direct me to a screen that explains that I must upgrade to Snow Leopard...and then Lion!  Do you hear that, Apple?  Thanks.)
    Anyway...so here's my plan:
    1) Upgrade to Snow Leopard
    2) Access the Mac app store
    3) Upgrade to Lion
Question A:  With my iMac (specs above), is it really advisable for me to do this?  Can my computer really handle Lion?  It seems I barely meet the minimum with my intel core 2 Duo and 2 GB ram...yes?  Is this a dumb idea, even if "OK"?  I know that "minimum requirements" on a PC often meant:  "Well, it will work...but it will be slower than a snail and crash if you run 5 programs at the same time" (which I usually do...)  I don't want to upgrade if the "minimum" is really not enough.
Question B:  If the answer to A is "not a good idea", then  do I just need a new computer (i.e. better processor)?  Or do I need more Ram?  And can I add Ram to this computer, and is it relatively easy?  I have added Ram to PCs tons of times, and you always have to determine type of Ram for your board, make sure they "match", or whatever, and then open up the machine and install.  Kind of a pain, but once I have the "right" type of Ram, opening the CPU and installing is within my abilities.  Will it be harder for a Mac?
    = = =
    Next:
When upgrading an OS on a Windows, you pretty much format the harddrive and start all over.  Back in the day I was a PC user, there wasn't really a "great" way to back up programs and files, so this was a nightmare.  You could NOT just back-up software.  You typically had to re-purchase and install it all from scratch.  Is this the same with Macs?  Furthermore, personal files were scattered all over the hard-drive for the individual software...so trying to back all that up to get it back on the new system = nightmare!  I hate PCs.
Anyway...so, my iMac has Time Machine.  I am pretty ignorant about this, and based on my previous PC backup program nightmares, I have a distrust for it...and don't really understand how it works.  But in any event, my external drive crashed a few months ago, and I haven't replaced it, yet.  So, I am replacing it soon and will get Time Machine back up and running...setting it up again, etc...leading to question C...
Question C: When upgrading from Leopard to Snow Leopard to Lion, what is the best way to ensure I keep all my programs and files.  My wife and I both access the computer, so two user accounts.  Does Time Machine really do a good job backing up everything and all things?  Is it just a matter of upgrade to Snow Leopard...then immediately to Lion...and then some sort of "Restore" from Time Machine?  Anything for me to "watch out for"...or to do when I buy a new external hard-drive and setup up Time Machine for the first time on it, in order to make this work well?  Will I have to re-install all the various applications I have installed on this thing?  (like with PCs?)
    Thanks for any sincere help.

Apple has discontinued support for 10.5, it's a plaque of our platform that Apple only supports the last two operating systems in circulation.
Where as on Windows you can run the same OS version for 10 years and get updates free (if not stolen), on a Mac we get one year, two tops now and if you don't upgrade and break all your third party software and hardware drivers in the process, then your denied security updates.
On top of that, the OS X upgrades tend to break your older hardware too, or slow it down so much that it drives you to want to buy newer hardware.
It's funny Apple places the AppStore on your OS X version along with iTunes and Safari updates, but then doens't supply necessary security updates, your machine may be compromised and here you enter vital credit card info, banking  etc. thinking you have a secure machine.
My advice, since that's a 10.5 era Mac, is to upgrade to 10.6.3 via this disk, then use Software Update until clear. You'll get security updates and your present installed 10.5 software will work in 10.6 using Rosetta.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A
Rosetta is not avaialble in 10.7 so it could be a lot of your software will no longer function
    http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
I don't see the sense in you buying all new software for a machine that's at it's end of life stage.
You can buy software in the AppStore with 10.6.
Question A:  With my iMac (specs above), is it really advisable for me to do this?  Can my computer really handle Lion?  It seems I barely meet the minimum with my intel core 2 Duo and 2 GB ram...yes?
You will need to buy 4GB of RAM to run Lion well, the 2GB is just a bare minimum, and your processor is a bit dated.
Lion 10.7 is certainly slower than Snow Leopard 10.6, in fact so many wanted to go back to Snow Leopard and one of the resons was Lion was slow.
So I wrote a User Tip, here, but the Tips were implemented only recently.
How to revert your Mac to Snow Leopard

RAM is easy, you can buy it at Otherworld Computing or Crucial.com and install it yourself, there is a little door under the monitor.
    Videos online at YouTube.

Mac'soperaing system is seperate, it can be replaced or upgraded indepentantly of programs or user accounts on the machine.
There are some programs that install a kernel extension file at boot into OS X, those get knocked out, but those can be replaced with a new install of the software.
You should always backup your users files as those can't be repalced.
 Most commonly used backup methods explained
Question C: When upgrading from Leopard to Snow Leopard to Lion, what is the best way to ensure I keep all my programs and files.
OS X upgrades dont' affect User accounts but they can have a affect on programs installed, which most of your 10.5 programs likely will no longer work in 10.7
However they will (with a slight update) work in 10.6 just like before.
You need to backup regardless, I suggest a manual backup of users files to a storage drive, a 10.5 clone on another drive, the your ready to upgrade to 10.6
10.5 to 10.6 upgrade is rather painless, also 10.6 gives accelerated video drivers, so your machine will appear faster.
However once you install 10.7, you will slow down.
Does Time Machine really do a good job backing up everything and all things?
No, you shouldn't rely upon TM, have a multiple backup stragedy, TM files are hard to access directly.
Is it just a matter of upgrade to Snow Leopard...then immediately to Lion...and then some sort of "Restore" from Time Machine?
No need to restore, OS X upgrades and leaves everything else in place, just some programs (with 10.6) or a lot (with 10.7) when you try to launch them they will fail.
Also when you connect TM it will do a substancial change to reflect the new boot drive.
If you were using TM as a "storage drive" thinking you can use the archived versions later, that wil change upon the new OS X  upgrade.
But in any event, my external drive crashed a few months ago, and I haven't replaced it, yet.  So, I am replacing it soon and will get Time Machine back up and running...setting it up again, etc...leading to question C..
You need not only TM drive, but a bootable clone and user files on a storage drive.
 Most commonly used backup methods explained
Will I have to re-install all the various applications I have installed on this thing?  (like with PCs?)
No, depending upon what OS X version you stop at depends how many programs no longer work.
You will have to buy a lot of new or upgrade versions with 10.7, not so with 10.6 only updates mostly because of Rosetta on 10.6 and not on 10.7
My opinion, since that machine is a bit dated, is to upgrade to 10.6, Software update to 10.6.8, and stay there.
Later on 10.8 is being released after this summer, you may want to consider getting a new machine with 10.8 a few months later to ensure all the bugs are worked out of it.
Your not a comptuer savvy person, you like most Apple users expect your machine to "just work" I think going to 10.7 will be a bad experience for you.
10.6.8 will server your needs until 10.8 is released and on new hardware where Apple will hold your hand for free for three months, 3 years with AppleCare.
Your not a "OS X upgrader type of a person" and Apple needs to get of thier collective assets and pay better attention to it's most common users.

  • First 6 weeks with Mac Pro - Bunch of questions for you

I'm a new Mac convert and now after having my 1st Mac for about 6 weeks I've developed a list of questions I'd love to have some help with.
    1) How can I "minimize all" like in a PC
    2) Some programs seem to require an admin status to install. Can I do this without logging into a separate admin account? Some will ask for a name and password, but some just won't install correctly. Can I "run as admin" somehow from the start without logging out or user switching first?
    3) If I'm running a fullscreen app (i.e. game such as Age of Empires) is there a way to get to the desktop without quitting the game?
    4) Is there a quick shortcut way to get to the downloads window?
    5) Can I change my mail so that there is a delay before a message is marked "read" - right now even scrolling past it marks it read.
    6) Can I auto log in to a network drive? I have a NAS that i use for backup storage and want it available evertime I start my computer
    7) How do I control what app opens a type of file - for example for a long time until I installed the full adobe PDF program all PDF files were opening in safari and I couldn't adjust the view
    8) I have a hot swap / Firewire drive. For some reason it won't show up unless I physically unplug it and then plug it back in. Is there an "update" that will update all drives and scan for connected drives?
I appreciate any help with these questions - love my Mac and getting great work from Aperture. Have a project with Final Cut express coming up which will be my first movie project on the Mac - used Sony Vegas on the Pc in the past.

    1) How can I "minimize all" like in a PC
    There are several options
    a-Use Expose ( F9, F10, F11 & F12 keys)
b-with the program whose windows you want to minimise active, while holding the option key, click the yellow window widget. All open windows in that program will minimise to the dock.
c-while holding the option key, click on a running programs icon in the dock and choose "hide others" from the popup menu. This will hide all running programs except the one your working on.
    2) Some programs seem to require an admin status to install.
You should be able to enter your admin name & password to install anything. This will affect where some things are installed sometimes, so you can also consider turning on fast user switching, so you have quick access to each account. If all that is not doing it for you ...
You can go to the accounts panel in System Preferences and set the admin account to auto-log in, or to log into the admin account and wait for you to enter the password. If you wanted to run as admin full time, you would do better to change your user account to an admin account and then delete the original admin account. No need for two admin accounts. While it is good practice to run and admin and a user account, the vast majority of Mac users run as admin.
    3) If I'm running a fullscreen app (i.e. game such as Age of Empires) is there a way to get to the desktop without quitting the game?
Command-H will hide most running programs. Clicking on the programs icon in the dock will restore the full screen window.
    4) Is there a quick shortcut way to get to the downloads window?
I like to keep a copy of the download manager in the Finder sidebar. You can get to the download manager from any Finder window, plus you can drag & drop URL's onto the icon to download files.
With the Finder active, press Shift-Command-G, which will open the "Go to Folder" window. Download manager is in /System/Library/CoreServices, so type /System/Library/CoreServices and hit the "go" button, At the bottom of the list, is an application called Verified Download Manager. Drag it to the sidebar of the open Finder window, placing it in the section below the iDisk/Network/HD.
Be careful not to move the actual program, you just want a link to it in the sidebar.
    5) Can I change my mail so that there is a delay before a message is marked "read" - right now even scrolling past it marks it read.
Not that I've found. You might want to visit http://www.hawkwings.net/ where you'll find a lot of Mail.app tips
    6) Can I auto log in to a network drive? I have a NAS that i use for backup storage and want it available evertime I start my computer
You can, several complicated ways come to mind ... I'm going to skip over them as they probably won't work with a PC type NAS anyway. What you could do, is to mount or connect to your NAS, so it is visible in the Finder, then, open the Accounts panel in System Preferences and click on the login items tab. Click the + button to add an item and the navigate/select your NAS.
This will mount your NAS at Startup, but could cause really slow startups and all kinds of other problems if you're using a laptop, or otherwise unable to connect to the NAS at startup/login. If the NAS is always available, this should work fine.
    7) How do I control what app opens a type of file - for example for a long time until I installed the full adobe PDF program all PDF files were opening in safari and I couldn't adjust the view
Select/Click-on (highlight in the finder) any file that you want to modify, and then press Command-I
This will open a get info window for the file, where you can choose "Open with..." to select what application to open this file with, then, just below, notice the "Change All" button, which, when clicked, will change every file type like the selection to work with the chosen app in the future.
You really should consider using Preview fro PDF's unless you need Acrobat advanded features - it's nicer/faster etc.
    8) I have a hot swap / Firewire drive. For some reason it won't show up unless I physically unplug it and then plug it back in. Is there an "update" that will update all drives and scan for connected drives?
Best way to deal with this is to make an alias (aka shortcut). While the drive is mounted, highlight it in the Finder and press Command-L
You can also add it (or the alias) to the sidebar, just like the download manager.
Both options let you click to mount the drive, which is handy to allow you to unmount it when you don't need it.

  • Here's a question for you!!

Hi guys... just a quick question really. On my computer, I do alot of DVD Backup's for my personal use (all legal just to point out) .
Now, this involves different stages for what I want them for...
1: I might put a DVD in a use Backup Software (this could take a few hours)
    or...
2: I might put the DVD in and just simply copy the VIDEO_TS folder onto my desktop. Again, this could take about an hour.
Which ever way I wish to do it, it's gonna take time either way. My question is, does it depend how much time it takes on what computer I have.
For example: I have a Mini Mac... but would the same process take less time on say an iMac, or a Mac Pro?
If I was looking at a new computer.. what factors do I need to take in? e.g. RAM? Memory? GHz? Etc...
Would a new computer make a big difference?
    Cheers guys.
(I'm looking out to buy a mac pro... will it be a big difference from a mini mac?)

You could try Toast and then use two internal SuperDrives, or even one internal and 2nd FireWire optical device.
The G5 and later optical drives use EIDE ATA/100+
The Mac Pro lets you have 4 or more internal drives quite easily so you aren't copying to and from and interfering with what the system boot drive has to do.
Anytime you work with a 4GB+ file you are going to see some serious system bandwidth bottlenecks. A fast boot drive, lots of space, and having some other drives, ideally a stripped RAID for data, can beef up bandwidth and I/O somewhat.
Working on IDE with two optical drives is a bottleneck because both use the same bus and don't share nicely (not concurrent I/O) so the separate FW400 optical is what I use.
I can be writing to two optical drives; or reading from one and writing to 2nd.
I do all backups to multiple eSATA and Firewire 400 and 800 drives. Mostly FW800 but also 2-3 eSATA drives. That is 60MB/sec. Not sure how many GB per hour.
RAID for backup isn't considered as safe obviously, but you can get 1GB copy done in one minute too.
I only use DVD rarely as needed for backups. End of year. Major file I can't lose. Otherwise, more than two backup sets as a minimum seems fine. And I can take a cheap drive, pull it and replace and have it work years later if needed so far.
    300GB drives are under $70.
The Mini etc use 2.5" drives which are slower than FW400 and limiting factor. FW800 or SATA would be an improvement. Your internal drive and SuperDrive (on PPC Mini) may have shared the same IDE bus? I think the Mini moved to SATA which helped some.
Asking the same question in same sub-forum etc usually isn't necessary or 'polite' as it is just 'duplication'.

  • Easy Facebook Question for you!!

When i'm trying to post a message or write on someones wall i type in the textbox, however it doesn't word wrap..Is there a way to have it word wrap?

Can someone tell me if its possible to get the cursor back to the end of the msg so i can continue posting if i where to move my cursor..

    * Select '''Pages''' and enter the range of pages you want to print. For example, selecting "from 1 to 1" prints the first page only.
    * Select '''Selection''' to print only the part the page you've highlighted.

  • SQL - PL/SQL question for you SQL degenerates.

I wish to create a view from a tableZ as follows. I have a table with 4 columns. I want to group col1,col2 and col3 based upon the value of col4. The value of col4 is based on a algorithm that needs to search for the lowest number in that particular grouping. So, from the example I am listing the value of col4 in the first block (A,A,A) is 1 since the smallest number in that block of 4 rows is a 1. Second block value would be=4 (A,A,B) since there are all 4's in the last column. Third Block (AAC) would be = 2 since we have 2,2,3,3. Fourth block (AAD) would be = 3 since we have 3,3,3,4 and the Fifth block (AAE) would be a 1 since we have 1,1,1,1. Remember the value is equal to the lowest integer of the four. The integer 1 is the lowest value in any list so if you loop and search the list and find a value of 1 you can exit at that point and automatically assign a one. So the Summary view would look like this based upon the sample values in the tableZ contents.
    A A A 1
    A A B 4
    A A C 2
    A A D 3
    A A E 1
    Table Z Contents of
    col1,col2,col3,col4
    ========================
    A A A 1
    A A A 1
    A A A 2
    A A A 3
    A A B 4
    A A B 4
    A A B 4
    A A B 4
    A A C 2
    A A C 2
    A A C 3
    A A C 3
    A A D 3
    A A D 3
    A A D 3
    A A D 4
    A A E 1
    A A E 1
    A A E 1
    A A E 1

I am using a fairly common slang use of the word in Information Technology offices throughout the United States[Humpty Dumpty language|http://www.wordspy.com/words/HumptyDumptylanguage.asp]
    n. An idiosyncratic or eccentric use of language in which the meaning of particular words is determined by the speaker.
    As in
    "There's glory for you!"
"I don't know what you mean by 'glory,' " Alice said.
Humpty Dumpty smiled contemptuously. "Of course you don't—till I tell you. I meant 'there's a nice knock-down argument for you!' "
"But 'glory' doesn't mean 'a nice knock-down argument,' " Alice objected.
"When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean—neither more nor less."

  • Hey all you pros, question for you...

I am a new convert, and I and trying to learn all the ins and outs of mac worship. With the one-button mouse (i got myself a cute little wireless one here...), are there shortcut keys to do more with the mouse? I wasn't particularly fond of the mighty mouse, but I am already missing scrolling and the such. I assume there is something to alleviate this, as so much is keyboard driven anyways...
    Thanks for you help...!

You can get the equivalent of a right-click a couple of ways. One way is to hold down the control key when you click. Another way is to click and wait a second before releasing the click. This is my preferred way for activating context menus, etc.

  • I have a question for you: Inserting Word document in BLOB column

    Hey Experts,
I have found a good info and a sample on how to achieve this on
    http://www.sys-con.com/java/source/5-6/code.cfm?Page=76.
    declare
    f_lob bfile;
    b_lob blob;
    begin
    insert into sam_emp(empno,ename,resume)
    values ( 9001, 'Samir',empty_blob() )
    return risumi into b_lob;
    f_lob := bfilename( 'MY_FILES', 'MyResume.doc' );
    dbms_lob.fileopen(f_lob, dbms_lob.file_readonly);
    dbms_lob.loadfromfile
    ( b_lob, f_lob, dbms_lob.getlength(f_lob) );
    dbms_lob.fileclose(f_lob);
    commit;
    end;
I have a jsp project and the users ( on the client side)must be
able to create a word document and send it to the server with an
uplaod servlet. With another servlet or jsp i want to process
this word document in BLOB column using JAVA. The sample above
uses PL/SQL to achieve this. Is there a way i can do this in my
servlet/jsp to do the same thing?
    Any hints are welcome!

  • Ipod Touch Update question; How long does a backup take for you?

I have updated my ipod before and the backup took a few hours lets say around 5 or so... and i was just wondering because this is the second time it has asked me to do this for a new patch and i started around 3:40 p.m. and it is now 6:20 p.m..... the progress only has a 11 bars out of the entire bar (windows xp)... so i was wondering is somthing wrong i also want to know how i would disconnect it because it is taking to long and i might have to leave and i want to take it with me.
also i dont usually back my stuff up and it has like 600 mbs of apps, atleast 5gigs of music and a few videos with some pictures. (8 gig ipod touch first gen got it before speakers /cry)

I have, just now, about 9 GBs of stuff on my 2G 16 GB and I'd say 8 minutes but I think it's less than that.
I'm constantly switching play lists and changing movies and TV shows as well as pod casts (I won't miss Rachel Maddows if I can help it.) so sync gets a work out.
It's true I've only got 3 apps so if you've got pages that might make a sync longer but not that much longer!
Something isn't working right with your sync.

  • Now can't get back to my first question for you! Hate new Firefox - how to revert?

Well, I just asked a question about bookmarks - they are lost after updating Firefox. Now can't even find them anywhere. My computer switched to Yahoo! and I want to use original Yahoo. Strongly dislike new toolbar - where is print, etc.? I can't get back to a link for my original question now, so please answer all of this here.
I really just want plain old Yahoo.
I want things like print on my toolbar.
    I need my bookmarks back.
Thank-you. I need step-by-step directions; please don't just tell me to look at the Yahoo! site because I have and can't figure out how to get this stuff.

Previous versions are available here: http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/
You may also wish to back up your profile for safekeeping prior to rolling back: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Profiles
If you roll back, you will want to change your update regime to make sure you won't automatically update against your wishes.
