Backup requires 1099GB , but only 300GB available !

I have at least figured out part of this problem. First I get the message:
"Are you sure you want to back up on the disk your original data is on."
But I am choosing the first partition of Bay 2 HD which is a 1TB partitioned into 2 500GB's.
I have a Bay 3 HD which is configured the same.
I say yes I am sure. Then I try to backup and I get the message:
Backup requires 1099GB, but only 300GB is available. I have computed the data on all 5 volumes and it turns out to be 1099GB. The 5 volumes are my main HD which is 500GB, and the 4 partitioned volumes in Bays 1 and 2. This is a total of 2500GB of which 1099GB is used.
Time Machine is trying to backup all 5 volumes on the selected volume. What can I do about this?

I did find one little glitch. If I mount an external drive for backup, etc. and the Time Machine is due to run, and the drive has enough data to put me over the limit of my target volume, then the Time Machine attempt fails. Not so bad, except all the Time Machine backup data is lost. The most recent is still there, but all past data is gone.
What is causing this?

  • IMac says 160GB on System Profiler but only 18GB available

    Hi All,
A friend's new 17" iMac Intel 1.83GHz only displays 126MB free of 18GB when pressing Apple i but the system profiler states its usual 160GB hard drive. Where can i find this extrqa storage? Is this something new to the Intel macs as i haven't used one of these before? Any clues will be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Carl.

Manufacturers of hard drives do not accurately advertise the space on their drives. This has been an ISO standard since the beginning. This standard has allowed them to call a 1000 bytes a kilobyte, a megabyte 1 million bytes, and a gigabyte 1 billion bytes. As such the drives are missing space based on the fact bytes form 1024 byte kilobytes, etc... If you read the spec footnotes, you'll learn formatted capacity may different and this user tip explains where other space is lost:

Tink2. I did solve my problem but I don't know exactly how. I reset FF which got rid of all my extensions and then added back just those few I really like, one at a time. So, I have just a few now and won't EVER add anymore until FF fixes whatever is wrong under the hood.
What works is Cool Previews, Forecast Fox, Personas, IE Tab 2 and Web of Trust. I won't add new ones, I'm tired of this nonsense. The good news is the plugins all work fine, it is the add on extensions that have problems. I had many but no more. Just those above that I know work and don't cause the "install missing" issue. :^) gene

  • The message I get is: Time Machine could not complete the backup. This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 111.27 GB but only 42.1 GB are available.

I have a problem with my Time Capsule.  The message I get is: Time Machine could not complete the backup. This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 111.27 GB but only 42.1 GB are available. As a result, my backups are no longer running. My umderstanding was that the Time Capsule would automatically delete old backups to make space. Can anyone help me figure out how to get my backups to run again?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.

  • Time Machine Error.  Backup is too large for the backup disk.  Backup requires 289.28 GB but only 177.01 GB are available.

My Mac has not been backing up for some time.  Tried Apple Support, but couldn't figure out problem.
    Receive the following error...
    Time Machine Error
This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 289.28 GB but only 177.03 GB are available.

See #C4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
If that doesn't clarify the situation, post back with:
How much data is on your internal HD (and any others being backed-up)?
How large is your Time Capsule?
Is there anything else on the TC besides these backups?  If so, what and how large?

  • HT201250 This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 1.42 TB but only 998.49 GB are available.

I am getting the error ¨This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 1.42 TB but only 998.49 GB are available¨ when I try to do a time machine backup.  I have a Retina Macbook Pro and am only using 250 GB on the internal drive.  My 1TB external drive that I am trying to use has been complete reformated (case sensitive journaled) and therefore completely empty.  Any ideas why time machine is saying my drive has 1.14 TB when its capacity is no where near that?

Well, at this point I might recommend that you reboot your MacBook Pro while simultaneously holding down the Command - R keys and booting into the Lion Recovery Partition.  There I would enter the "Disk Uility", highlight your Mac HD in the left hand column to select it and run "Repair Disk", and then run "Repair Permissions" twice.  They may resolve the hard drive's confusion in Time Machine.
    Hope this helps

  • Time Machine Error:  backup to large requires 523 MB but only 8.4 GB avail

For about a week now I am getting the following backup error:
This backup is too large for the backup volume. The backup requires 523.3 MB but only 8.4 GB are available.
    Then the latest backup fails.
This makes no sense to me. My backup volume is 150GB external USB Buffalo drive. It has been working great for months now. Based on some information I read in another post I excluded my application folder that added another 15.2 GB not needed to backup. I also tried unchecking the box that warns when old backups are deleted.
I have read through many post but have not found an answer yet.
    Any suggestions?

Thanks for the quick and accurate advice. Since I had never done this before it took me a while to figure out how to partition the drive as GUID. I did not understand I had to create a partition and click on options.
On Apple's Support website for OS X 10.5 Time Machine under Mac 101: Using Time Machine in Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard (see below) it should have information about how important it is to partition a new drive as GUID then how to do it. It just says I won't have to worry about backing up again. For me I had to erase all my backups - this time nothing was really important that was not on my main drive. It would have been good if I could have set it up correctly the first time.
    Getting started
The first time you attach an external drive to your Mac OS X Leopard-based Mac, Time Machine asks if you’d like to use that drive as your backup location (you may need to erase the drive first). Choose yes and Time Machine takes care of everything else, automatically, in the background. _You won't have to worry about backing up again._

  • My time Machine keeps saying, "Time Machine could not complete the backup. This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 345.74 GB but only 289.80 are available." I have already excluded files. I have a 1tb external drive. HELP!!!

For over two weeks now I have been frustated and not having my TIme Machine back up to my 1tb external drive. I dont understand why now its a problem.  It keeps saying
"This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 345.74GB but only 289.80GB are avialable.  Time Machine needs work space on the bakup disk, in addition to the space required to store backups. Open Time Machine preferences to select a large backup disk or make the bakup smaller by excluding files." So I have already excluded almost all of my files, and even deleted the backup disk yet, that quote still keeps popping up. I am truly at a wall with this. I have a Mac OS X version 10.7.5. CAN SOMEONE HELP ME PLEASE????

I am halfway through my 4s contract and wanted to buy a 5, but only see the 64 gig available to me for 649 but that requires a 2 year contract. Where can I buy w ou getting locked into a contract and for how much?

Your contract is with your service provider - it has nothing at all to do with Apple.
You can buy a contract free and/or unlocked iPhone from Apple and use it with whatever carrier you wish.  Your contract terms with your current service provider remain in effect for your iPhone 4s though, so if you cancel with them (or port your number out, which accomplishes the same thing) you will owe them early termination fees and so forth.
Even if you pay full retail but want to use the phone with your current service provider, you are still obligated to complete the terms of your existing contract.

  • I had to reformat my OSX 10.5.8 and i can't restore my emails from my time machine backup from an external hard drive - only the latest (post backup) time machine back ups are available to restore. Please can any help

I had to reformat my OSX 10.5.8 and I can't restore my emails from my time machine backup from an external hard drive - only the latest (post backup) time machine back ups are available to restore. Please can any help? I can find the mail folder in my libraries, but the Restore Button is grayed out

OSX treats the reformatted drive as a different one; it's the same as replacing it, and the old one is no longer connected.
See #E3 in  Time Machine - Troubleshooting to see and restore from the "old" drive.
And, you may not want to restore via the Finder; see the blue box in #15 of  Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.

Hi, I've tried charging continuously for 72 hours. But to no avail. It just stopped working out of the blue. Actually I believe I let the battery die off completely. When I tried charging it again, it never worked.
I had only used it for about 1 month.
I bought this in January at Best Buy, and still have the receipt. I was on long business trip and just got back. I can't get the 90 day customer service. How can I get this returned to Black Berry, they won't allow me to contact them without providing my credit card for incidence based service.
    Please help! Thanks.

do any LED color happen when you plug it in?
if only RED, then pug in until red goes out, wait 6 seconds and plug in again.
repeat 3 times and wait to see if 5 green flashes while plugged in
after 5 flahes, leave it plugged in for 90 minutes and it should boot up. if not hold power button down for 20 seconds and try again.
You have 1 year warranty, choose option other when calling in and not phone support. This is confusing I  know.

    Hi cloudsplitter,
An Internet connection is required the first time you install and license your desktop apps, but you can use the apps in offline mode with a valid software license. The desktop apps will attempt to validate your software licenses every 30 days.
For annual members, you can use the apps for up to 99 days in offline mode. Month-to-month members can use the software for up to 30 days in offline mode.
