Backup/restore via diskutility: error

I´ve been following the instructions below to the last letter trying to backup and restore my Macbook pro osx 10.6.3 via disk utility. When trying to restore, all I get is this error:
"Could not validate source. Bad file descriptor."
I can see from other postings that I am not the only one with this problem, but so far I haven´t seen a solution. Can anybody help?
Raymond
Instructions followed:
Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility
1 Connect an external hard drive (FireWire or USB) that has sufficient free space to hold at least one copy of the contents of your Macintosh HD.
2 Start from your Mac OS X 10.5 or 10.6 Install DVD. (Insert the disc, then restart and hold the C key.)
3 Select your language. Do not start an installation.
4 Choose Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
5 Select the disk you wish to back up (your source disk, such as Macintosh HD) in the source pane on the left.
6 Click the "New Image" button in the toolbar.
7 Give your image a useful name such as "04-15-2009 Macintosh HD backup". A date in the name makes it easy to tell when the backup was made.
Note: For additional security, you can encrypt the backup disk image. From the "Encryption:" pop-up menu, select either 128-bit or 256-bit AES encryption. When prompted enter a password for the encryption: Use the password assistant to help you make a good password, or see this link for information about how to choose a good password.
8 Be sure the Save destination is a location on your external hard disk, then click "Save" to continue.
9 Enter your admin name and password if prompted. The imaging process will begin. The time it takes to complete the imaging process depends on factors such as the amount of data on your Macintosh HD. Approximately 1 GB per minute will be imaged, depending on various factors.
10 When the process is complete, quit Disk Utility (press Command-Q).
11 Press Command-Q to quit the Mac OS X installer; you will be prompted to restart.
Restoring the backup disk image's contents to your internal Mac OS X disk
Note: If the Mac you are restoring to is not the same Mac you used to make the backup disk image, use Migration Assistant instead of Disk Utility to properly transfer the data back to your Mac.
Important: These steps will overwrite data with the same name in the same location, such as files on your desktop and in your Home folder.
1 Connect the external disk you've backed up to.
2 Start from your Mac OS X 10.5 or 10.6 Install DVD. (Insert the disc, then restart and hold the C key.)
3 Select your language. Do not start an installation.
4 Choose Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
5 Select your internal Mac OS X disk that you want to restore to.
6 Click the Restore tab.
7 Drag your internal disk to the "Destination:" field.
8 Click the "Image..." button next to the "Source:" field.
9 Navigate to the location of the backup image you want to restore (located on your external disk).
10 Click "Open" to continue.
11 Click the "Restore" button. Confirm you want to "Restore to Disk" by clicking "Restore" again. This will replace data on your Mac OS X volume with data from your backup that has the same name and is in the same location.
12 Enter your admin name and password when prompted. If the backup disk image is encrypted, enter the disk image password if necessary. The time it takes to restore from the image depends on factors such as the amount of data on your backup disk image.

Hi Raymond,
The first thing I would try , after step 4 and before step 5 in the "restore" component of the process you list, would be to:
4a) Select the hard disk you wish to restore FROM in the left hand panel of Disk Utility
4b) use the "First Aid" tab in Disk Utility to "Repair Disk"
4c) Repeat the same repair process, but this time select the .dmg file in the left hand panel.
If it comes up with things that can't be repaired, post back, but otherwise then try following through steps 5 etc.
Cheers
Rod

  • Problems with Disk Utility backup & restore via DMG disk images

I attempted to backup and restore a 2TB external raid storage device using the recommended Disk Utility procedure for 10.6.6. One of the HDDs in the raid enclosure had started to fail.
First step was to create a new image from the 2TB device. I accepted the defaults of compressed image format and no encryption. The image took about 15 hours to create, and when complete, I was left with 2 files:
    OWC2TB.dmg (1.1TB)
    OWC2TB.002.dmgpart (486GB).
To check the DMG I ran the Disk Utility "Verify Disk" on the DMG, and got the message "The volume OWC2TB appears to be OK". The DMG is described in DU as:
Description: Apple UDIF read-only compressed (zlib)
    Connection Bus: Disk Image
    Total Capacity: 2 TB
    Disk Write Status: Read Only
Partition Map Scheme: No partition map
I then replaced the failing HDD in the enclosure, recreated a new 2TB filesystem on the device, and attempted to restore from the DMG image.
The first attempt was to use Disk Utility "Restore" function. I specified the DMG as the source and the new device as the destination, and chose "Erase Destination". This failed immediately with the error "Restore failure. Could not find any scan information. The source images needs to be imagescanned before it can be restored".
After researching this error I tried to correct it by selecting the DMG in Disk Utility and running Images => Scan Image for Restore. This failed immediately, complaining there was insufficient disk space. More research revealed it needed the same amount of spare space on the same disk to do an imagescan. So I had to free up an EXTRA 1.5TB of space in addition to the space the DMG consumed. Not very user friendly.
The next attempt to imagescan the DMG got further than the "insufficient space" error. It displayed "Scanning image OWC2TB.dmg, Block Checksum Partition #1". This ran for about 10 hours. At the end, it displayed a new error message "Unable to scan OWC2TB.dmg (internal error)".
Next I tried to mount the DMG and copy the files manually. My first attempt at this resulted in a "Verifying..." phase which looked like it will take about 10 hours, so I clicked "Skip". Soon after I got an error message "Unable to attach OWC2TB.dmg (no mountable file systems).". Now I am trying a mount with the Verify option...
Can anyone suggest what I can try next to restore the DMG?
I think the problem might be the fact the DMG is split in two parts, but the imagescan/restore software does not know how to read the second part? Is there a way to join these into a single DMG?

  • Restore from backup gives a cryptic error - help please!

    Hi,
    I have a iPhone Classic (pre 3G), with Software v 2.0
I wanted to get back some files that an application created (recorder) which got erased on upgrading the application!
So, I did a restore from backup operation via iTumes v 7.7
My phone is restored to factory settings, and when proceeding to the next step with the screen
"Restore from backup of..", I simply get an error after lot of disk churn
"iTunes could not restore the iPhone "xxx" because the backup was corrupt or not compatible with the iPhone that is being restored.
I am very disappointed lately with a series of issues with Leopard and now with the iPhone.
    Thank you in advance.
    Anand

I had the same exact problem. I decided to quit iTunes (praying it would work upon reopening). I got the same error message on the first 5 backups I tried. Eventually a back-up from almost 2 months ago worked. I lost a lot of info but was thankful it worked.
Oh wait! Well I'll be darned. It DIDN'T work. As soon as it was "done" restoring, it brought me to the same "Set Up Your iPhone" screen. Only to go through the same thing again.
Bottom line: 2.0 Software/7.0 iTunes are completely screwed up. I'm thoroughly ****** off.

  • HELP! Lost ALL my bookmarks & Bookmark Toolbar is empty. Attempts to restore from the backup files yields an error message that says, "Unable to process the backup file." Have tried opening nearly all 10 existing backups w/same result.

I was in the midst of a Firefox session w/two windows open. Nothing special about the sites. No fancy javascripts or anything. When I closed the second window and opened the "History, Show all History" pull-down, the Library screen had no data in it.
I looked for the Bookmarks.html file in my profile and it is missing. I tried renaming an old .bak file from a couple years ago and I can open it as a file and see the text of it displayed but Firefox will not recognize it as and open it as the Backups file.
Following the directions already posted - using "History, Show all History" then the "Import and Backup, Restore" process - allows Firefox to see all the backups, but trying to restore from any of them yields the "Unable to process the backup file" error message.
I have re-started my machine from a cold start - twice now.

The file that stores bookmarks is probably damaged, for details on how to fix that see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Unable_to_process_the_backup_file_-_Firefox

That usually means that there is something wrong with the backup and it cannot be used.  You can try restoring the backup again, but if you continue to get the same message all you can do is restore to a different backup, if you have one.

  • [Forum FAQ] Cannot perform a backup schedule via Windows Server Backup and receive "The system cannot find the path specified." Error

    Symptom One
    You attempt to
schedule a backup every day via Windows Server Backup on Windows Server 2008 R2. At the beginning, the backup works without issue. But after a few days it failed and you receive the error “Windows Server Backup:
The system cannot find the path specified.”
    Cause
The issue may occur if there is
no shadow copy storage space available on the backup volume.
    Verify
You can use the List ShadowStorage command to check if you have enough storage space to store the newly created shadow copy. If you've reviewed the size of the backup snapshot and discovered
that there is no allocated space for the storage association, you need to resize shadowstorage.
    Solution
You could run the command below to create shadow copy storage space on the backup volume:
    vssadmin resize
    shadowstorage /for=<ForVolumeSpec> /on=<OnVolumeSpec> [/maxsize=<MaxSizeSpec>]
    More Information
    Vssadmin resize shadowstorage

    Symptom Two
    When you add
another external hard drive to backup schedule via Windows Server Backup on Windows Server 2012, it fails and you receive the error “The System cannot find the path specified.”
    Cause
The issue is due to the
Original Destination Disk was not attached to the server.
    Verify
You could check the disk status in Disk Management to see if the Original Destination Disk is offline or removed.
    Solution
    You need to attach
Original Destination Disk to the Server then choose another external hard drive as backup target. After that, you could remove the Original Destination Disk.
    Workaround
To work around this issue, please use the WBADMIN command line tool to add disk.
    WBADMIN ENABLE BACKUP -addtarget :{ DiskID}
The AddTarget parameter takes disk ID as parameter. It can be retrieved by running "WBADMIN GET DISKS" command.
    Example:
    WBADMIN ENABLE BACKUP
    -addtarget :{ aa123d14-bba0-1dd9-0d93-80aaaa6bbb63}

  • I cannot get my add-ons to install. I get an error message. I had 3.0.19 working fine and had to reformat and somehow it will not restore via mozbackup the original way I had it. What am I missing?

I am trying to mnaintain my sanity when browsing and had No-Script, Request Policy and Ad Block installed and working well. I made a mistake and some malware got in there. I reformatted my drive and tried to restore via Moz backup but it will not install any add-ons in ANY version I have tried thus far.

Might be totally unrelated to the problem you're having, but saying it since it's still important: you should definitely upgrade to Firefox 3.6 asap, as 3.0.x is no longer supported by Mozilla. This means that you're no longer patched for security holes and are exposed to online threats like viruses, etc.
Upgrading is easy - just go to mozilla.com and download the latest and greatest version of Firefox. Good luck!

  • New iphone, restore backup failed with - An error occurred. How do I fix this?

Have tried to follow the transfer instructions but it does not seem to work.
Everytime I choose to restore a backup when I set up / activate the new iphone, it fails after some 10-12 seconds with the message that it could not restore because an error occurred.
It says nothing else about what the error is and I have to start the set up / activation all over.
So how so I solve this?
Other 'answers' says how to transfer, but it does not work for me and the answers I have found does not address this issue.

Search the error code in the support search and you should find something that will walk you through it, but without an error code it's a little hard to know what you're talking about
