Backup restore vs re-install

Hi,
I was led to believe if I do backup-restore, any device's (in this case my iPad's) performances become weaker compare to re-install individual apps. (I would lose all the settings though)
I think I heard it is because it is because any OS would store some logs and alphas(?) in their memory or drive.
I would like to know if this is correct piece of information.
Thanks all.

I would definitely use backup and restore. It will consume fewest resources and you *know* that the data is identical.

    Normally that i followed all instructions from your support site, and that i tried many things, but nothing helped :( !?
    my .json file isn't corrupted cause it was saved on another partition before formatting my OS.
    Please don't tell me that my bookmarks are lost :( cause i had many important things in that bookmarks, on 100.s pages :( ....

    Can you restore that JSON backup in a new profile?
    Did you make sure that it is really a JSON backup and that there is no missing or hidden other file extension?
    A JSON backup starts with: {"title":"","id":1,"dateAdded"
    A HTML backup starts with: <!DOCTYPE NETSCAPE-Bookmark-file-1>
    You can try if you can restore that JSON backup in a new profile.
    Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems
    See Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile
    If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile (be careful not to copy corrupted files)
    See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Firefox
    Please for administration of this support site, make possibility to quote someone's answer, on this way is dificult to answer somebody who wrote some suggestion!
    No, i can't restore JSON backup in new profile, even on fresh installed OS XP SP3, with fresh installation of latest version of firefox!
    MAN I TOLD YOU 10X IT'S 200 % JSON BACKUP FILE!!! I'M NOT IN IT FROM YESTERDAY, I WORK IN IT 12 YEARS!!!
    I tried restoring json backup in new profile, but nothing, i couldn't restore, cause that stupid error from screen shot which i posted again appears !
    Man i'm not totally noob i repeat 2nd time here, and normally that i know to create new profile, and that i tried that, but that didn't help!
    I can't believe that FIREFOX has not good support team, and doesn't care for yours users, this will not give me more reason to use in future firefox
    like borwser, if i don't have good support, and when i have problem like this, to loose all my very important bookmarks and passwords on them, and
    firefox support won't to help me to solve my problem!
    If somebody from firefox support team read this, i can give you Remote desktop access to my computer to try solve this problem, like other serious company
    like HP, Dell , etc. give remote desktop support to their users!
    Corel are you from firefox support team? Please don't write same suggestions, cause i know to read, and i understand well if you write once some suggestion!

  • Backup/restore a system that has 2 OS installed

    Hello Guys
    I have 2 OS –both are windows XP- installed on a machine on 2 different partitions
    Using Rescue and Recovery, I created a backup inside OS number 1,
    I tried to restore the backup, but unfortunately, Rescue and Recovery restored only one OS(and didn’t restore the second OS)
     So my question is:  how can I backup/restore a system that has 2 OS installed
    Thanks

    Dear Sir
    I am a graduate in computer science engineering .For
    the past few months I had training in java. There is
    serious doubt that has arisen & no body in my contact
    has the answer for it.Sounds interesting.
    My doubt is that can JVM be installed in a system that
    has only OS- DOSOS-DOS ? Is that a variant on the microsoft DOS (like e.g. DrDOS).
    1)     If yes then
    ?     Why cant sun Microsystems starts developing a well
    secure OS on that base like Microsoft did.They did, only microsoft failed and Sun worked it out nicely with Solaris (aka SunOS) which is a UNIX variant (which DOS isn't).
    ?     Can applet be run (or developed) in a purely DOS
    based systemYou can develop them, just not run or compile them ;-)
    >
    2)     If not then
    ?     Why java is said to be platform independent.Because it is, the specs are out there, you're free to write a JVM for DOS (I'd suggest version 6.22).
    Hope that my simple doubts will be cleared through tech personals.If those are doubts about a language I'd see you need to straighten out your prioritiets.
    Tech personals? Are those personal advertisements for technical dating or something?

    No problem.
    p.s. to other guy that posted that IBM wrote MsDOS (aka DOS, the most widely spread version, which I'm assuming we're talking about), no they didn't, microsoft did, that's where Bill Gates got his money with.
    IBM had it's own variant and was pushing the PC hardware market (the ancestors of our pc's were either IBM or IBM compatible).

    I did an icloud backup on my old 4S with iOS 8.3 and wanted to install on my new iPhone 6 but it only has iOS 8.1.3! Can I do/use the backup after I chose "install as new iPhone"?
    Because I cannot update the software until I chose if I want to begin with a new phone setting or download a backup.
    But the backup is of course not compatible with the old iOS.
    So will it be possible to get the new iPhone going, then do the software update to 8.3 and then download / use the data from
    my 4S icloud backup?

    1. Settings > General > Software Update > Update the  to 8.3
    2. Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content & Settings
    3. Reactivate phone and follow prompts to restore iCloud (or iTunes) backup.

  • System Copy/ Oracle Backup/Restore as part of migrating from 32 to 64-bit

    Source system (I386): R3E47 Ext Set 2.00 SAP_BASIS 620 Kernel 640 Windows 2000, Oracle 10.2.0.4, non-unicode
    Target system (x86-64/AMD64): R3E47 Ext Set 2.00 SAP_BASIS 620 Kernel 640 Windows 2000 Oracle 10.2.0.4, non-unicode
    Am using method System Copy/ Oracle Backup/Restore to migrate from 32 to 64 bit (HOM System Copy).
    Actions on source system:
    a) Upgrade from 9.2.0.7 to Oracle 10.2.0.4
    b) Used ora_br_copy.bat to generate CONTROL.SQL and init<sid>.ora
    c) Switched logfiles
    d) Performed offline backup
    Actions on target system:
    a) Installed Oracle 10.2.0.1 and patched it to 10.2.0.4
    b) Used CD 51033746 "6.20/6.40 based products Installation Master (Edition May 2008)" to install the CI
    c) Started installation of the DB instance selecting System Copy/ Oracle Backup/Restore (same <SID> for source and target systems)
    Relevant input parameters used:
    Database schema: SAPR3
    Database character set: US7ASCII
    d) When SAPINST stopped to allow for restoring of datafiles, logs and init<sid.ora>:
    - copied datafiles and logs to the usual place
    - copied CONTROL.SQL (edited to include utilrp.sql and utlrp.sql for the migration from 32 to 64) to the DB-instance intallation . directory.
    - copied generated init<SID>.ora to the <ORACLE_HOME>\database
    e) Resumed SAPINST.
    David Byrne in a previous post suggested: "check your oracle alert file in case there are errors there you may need to update the word size for the 64bit install. Errors like this in the oracle alert file would suggest that.,
    ORA-12012
    ORA-06544: PL/SQL: internal error, arguments: [ORA-06544: PL/SQL: internal error, arguments: 56319], [, ], [, ], [, ], [
    ORA-06553"
    Well, I am getting ORA-06553: PLS-801: internal error [56319] but then my edited CONTROL.SQL (which is mainly a CREATE CONTROLFILE as it would be obtained with a ...BACKUP CONTROLFILE TO TRACE) includes at the end this:
    shutdown immediate
    startup upgrade
    spool utlirp.log
    @?/rdbms/admin/utlirp.sql
    spool off
    Shutdown immediate
    Startup
    Spool utlrp.log
    @?/rdbms/admin/utlrp.sql
    Spool off
    exit
    which is supposed to do just that... (I think)
    Help, anyone?

    > Trying to cheer me up, are you?
    No
    > It is NOT free that reorganization! Quite expensive, actually, paid for in time! But you're right... the database needed a reorg anyway :-\
    True, not "free" - it takes time but the data will be nicely aligned then
    > And why would I have to reconfigure all those 10.2 features? Everything's either in the database or init<sid>.ora, ain't it? And my database is a pretty 10.2.0.4 with all those nice features already activated...
    No - not really auotmatically if you upgraded from 9.2 And "init<SID>.ora" is past, you nowadays use "spfile" If, of course, e. g. Automatic Undo was activated in 9.2 then it's there of course in 10.2 too.
    > One sticky point... I haven't really read the r3load procedure yet and I will before I import, but... I would say I don't have to do anything about the 32->64 bit, right? I mean, it should behave properly while reloading on 64-bit...
    The exported content is about 10 % of the size of the system, it's database and OS independent so yes, you can import it nicely on 32bit. Another tip: make sure you don't just use the default configurations for R3load, it will take a HUGE amount of time. Use the package splitter (builtin-in in sapinst) so you get a much higher parallelism when importing.

  • Backup/Restore for my demo database

    Howdy all. I am running Oracle 10g Standard Edition on Windows 2K Server. I have the following situation ...
    I would like to make a standard demo database for my company. This database would be put on several machines and used by sales people to demo our software to possible customers. I need to be able to restore this database on a machine with Oracle 10g installed and then run our software on it.
    I can make the database and run our software on it just fine on my machine. I am, however running into problems when trying to learn how Oracle and RMAN work with backups and restoring those backups. I am coming from the MSSQL2K environment where backup/restore is fairly simple and straightforward.
    Will somebody please give me a basic idea of what I need to do in order to take the database on my machine and back it up and then restore it on another machine. I don't want to have the restore depend on a given file/directory structure. Our software depends on two tablespaces in the Oracle database. So, if it is easier to somehow backup the two tablespaces and restore them than it is to backup the entire database and restore it - then that is great. I will do it that way.
    I am basically looking for the simplest approach for restoring this demo database wherever I want to quickly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    wally

    Jeffrey, here's what I use to do this, I have a production database that on occassion I need to make a copy of to perform some testing on, so I just use this to create an "auxiliary" database using the RMAN backups from the production database. I thought in 10g there was a database clone function, I'll have to look that up and get back to you, anyway, here's the instructions I use.
    Target Database = RMAN Target (Source database to be copied.)
    Auxiliary Database = RMAN Auxiliary (Duplicated database end result)
    1. Copy the target database’s init.ora file to the auxiliary database’s location.
    2. Modify disk locations for control files, archive logs and dump dests in init.ora if required
    3. Create locations for data files, dump dests, control files and log files
    4. Copy RMAN backup files and archive logs to same location on auxiliary DB server as they are on target DB server
    5. Create Oracle Service using ORADIM utility
    6. Start instance in nomount
    7. Create listener.ora entry on auxiliary server
    8. Create tnsnames.ora entry on target server
    9. Connect to rman catalog, target and auxiliary from the target server:
         RMAN> connect catalog rman/<password>@<catalog db>
         RMAN> connect target sys/<password>@<target db>
         RMAN> connect auxiliary sys/<password>@<auxiliary db>
    10. Run the following (modify the sequence count and datafile renames as required.)
    run{
    allocate auxiliary channel d1 type disk;
    set newname for datafile 1 to 'e:\ORACLE\ORADATA\MTSD\SYSTEM01.DBF';
    set newname for datafile 2 to 'e:\ORACLE\ORADATA\MTSD\RBS01.DBF';
    set newname for datafile 3 to 'e:\ORACLE\ORADATA\MTSD\USERS01.DBF';
    set newname for datafile 4 to 'e:\ORACLE\ORADATA\MTSD\TEMP01.DBF';
    set newname for datafile 5 to 'e:\ORACLE\ORADATA\MTSD\TOOLS01.DBF';
    set newname for datafile 6 to 'e:\ORACLE\ORADATA\MTSD\INDX01.DBF';
    set newname for datafile 7 to 'e:\ORACLE\ORADATA\MTSD\SMDBDATA.DBF';
    set newname for datafile 8 to 'e:\ORACLE\ORADATA\MTSD\SMDBIDX.DBF';
    set newname for datafile 9 to 'e:\ORACLE\ORADATA\MTSD\SMDBTEMP.DBF';
    set newname for datafile 10 to 'e:\ORACLE\ORADATA\MTSD\AUDITDATA.ORA';
    set newname for datafile 11 to 'e:\ORACLE\ORADATA\MTSD\AUDITAR.ORA';
    duplicate target database to mtsd
    logfile
    'e:\oracle\oradata\mtsd\redo01.log' size 10M,
    'e:\oracle\oradata\mtsd\redo02.log' size 10M,
    'e:\oracle\oradata\mtsd\redo03.log' size 10M,
    'e:\oracle\oradata\mtsd\redo04.log' size 10M;}

  • Backup/Restore App -- stores backups where? "Delete record" does what?

    I had used the Backup/Restore app under 4.1.x to backup the table to itself. Upon installing the 4.2.2 update, there was some message about did I want to delete unusable 4.1 Backups? IIRC, I said no. Went into the App to make sure I knew what I was about to "delete" and did a "Delete Backup Record".
    Concern is that free storage changed much less than I expected. Not sure how big the backup would have been but it sure took a lot longer to write than only the hunderd or so MB freed up would suggest.
    Any idea where the locally stored backups are stored ? Went looking with Astro and found nothing obvious...
    Anybody can confirm "Delete Backup Record" actually deletes the backed-up data not just the metadata of it having been done?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Backups are stored in the folder ".semc-fullbackup" on the internal storage or SD-card. This is a hidden folder so you need to select Show hidden files in Astro.
    Deleting a backup from Backup & restore show remove all files in that backup.

  • IPhone Backup / Restore questions

    Maybe this has been covered here, but I am confused about backing up the data on my new iPhone -
    1) When iTunes says "backing up iPhone" before the sync . . . what is it backing up? Contacts? Music? Pictures? Applications?
    2) What does Restore do? It seems to indicate you will lose all of your data on the phone if you run restore.
    3) If I replace my phone . . . or Apple does at some point for a battery . . . will the Backup/Restore features in iTunes restore all of my contacts, music, pictures and applications to the new phone?
    While most things with the iPhone seem pretty intuitive, this whole process has me confused.
    Dave

    The backup that is created and maintained by iTunes stores data such as most iPhone settings, email account settings, SMS messages, notes created with the Notes application, recent calls, call favorites, data created and stored by 3rd party applications, and photos captured by your iPhone.
    No need to backup iTunes content since your iTunes content remains on your computer and should be included with your computer's backup.
    Regarding contact information and calendar events, the iPhone is designed to be synced with a supported application on your computer. The exception to this is with an Exchange account or MobileMe account, which provides for over the air syncing with this data.
    With Vista, you can sync contact information and calendar events with Outlook 2003 or 2007, or Windows Contacts for contact information.
    A Restore completely erases your iPhone followed by re-installing the current firmware version. After the current firmware version is re-installed, you are prompted to restore your iPhone from your iPhone's backup (which is the default selection), or as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup.
    This must be followed by a sync with iTunes to re-transfer data not included with your iPhone's backup such as all iTunes content, 3rd party applications, contact information, calendar events, bookmarks, and photos transferred from your computer to your iPhone.

  • Backup/restore questions LMS 4.2

    Hello,
    I have several questions regarding data migration from LMS 3.2.1 to LMS 4.2.We will perform backup and restore procedure on new LMS4.2 server machine .
    1. I am wondering what will happen with admin password aftrer restore, and all the other passwords in LMS. What will be effective? What will happen with database passwords?
    2. Other thing is : LMS 3.2.1 is installed on D:\ProgramFiles\CSCOpx and the new LMS 4.2.1 is installed in D:\CSCOpx
    Will there be problems during restore, because the paths on old and new LMS server are not the same?
    3. When to perform the licensing?  Should I apply license before restore? I think I would have to apply it before beacause customer has 300 devices and eval license iz for 100 only.
    4. Does PI_CM license - Compliance  Management License comes with the product? How do we get this license? I am aware that this CAAM is new feature in 4.2 version so I am not sure does the customer have rights on it. They have bought upgrade from 3.2 to 4.1 and they have valid support contract so we will go to 4.2 version.
    Thanks!
    Marija

    Following are the answers :
    1. LMS's user info and passwords are stored in cwpass file under NMSROOT\lib\classpath\com\cisco\nm\cmf\servlet, which is also
    backed up with DB backup. Hence restore would bring all previous user names and passwords.
    2. Ciscoworks has a mechanism which doesn't bothers the install directory. It sets environment variable as NMSROOT which is replaced by
    the install directory and hence there should not be any issue. Please note that Inter-OS resotre are not supported.
    3. You can apply the license anytime, but it is good to install it before backup restore, else the excess of devices, more than 100
    will go to unmanaged state and will have to be brought back to managed state once lic is applied.
    4. CAAM lic has to be purchased separately. You can contact lic. team or your accounts team for this.Till that time you can use it with its 60 days eval lic.

    I have substituted XXXXX for the name of my backup file
    I really need some help here. My database was lost and I need to restore the backup. We have a lot of hours of cataloguing and metatagging in there!
    thanks

    Hello Everyone,
    I haven't solved the problem, but I have found the root of it. The short answer is DO NOT RUN FINAL CUT SERVER 1.1.1 ON A MACHINE WITH SNOW LEOPARD SERVER!!!
    I finally realized through a long and painful process of trying to restore our database, rolling back to Leopard server, upgrading again to Snow Leopard Server, and going back again to Leopard Server, that ALL of our database backups created after the Snow Leopard Server upgrade cannot be restored in FCServer 1.1.1. I don't know if FCServer 1.5 will read them, and I'm not about to spend the money to find out.
    I'm really disappointed here. Apple does say that FCServer 1.5 is the compatible version to run with Snow Leopard server, but they certainly don't warn of the disaster that could occur if you try to run FCserver 1.1.1 with Snow Leopard Server.
    Right now I'm trying to figure out how to extract the data from hundreds of items that have been entered so that we don't have to re-enter them all again.
    So again, be warned. If you are upgrading to Snow Leopard Server, upgrade your FCServer too. At least I hope that's all it takes. For our part, we're back to Leopard Server and staying there for a while.

    Hi Angie,
    You should always mention OS details while drafting message.
    First, CHeck you must selected same SID as earlier while installation or Oracle and DB.
    Secondly, you can skip this phase in SAPInst, bit technical for you.

  • Homegneous System copy Specific DB method Oracle Backup/Restore Sapinst

    Hello colleagues,
    Following the documentation, I´ve one doubt about the above method, is it needed to install again the SCS instance when the system is installed in one host and we want just to refresh database.
    I mean, we want to refresh CRM quality system from Production system. It´s a ABAP+JAVA system, so i have to prepare a backup and export Central instance through sapinst in source system.
    Afterwards it´s needed to follow the three steps in sapinst, Install SCS instance, Install database instance and install central instance (database copy section) . Or as we´ve already installed our quality CRM system, it´s just enough with installing database instance and central instance (using backup/restore method and exported data from source system)
    Thanks a lot for this info because in the SAP guides it´s not clear from my point of view.
    Regards

    Well i didnot get your question properly, but as per my understanding if you have only ABAP instance installed then you can go with the Database resoration method but as you said ABAP+JAVA instance both are there so in that case you need to build the export of complete system through Sapinst and then you cn perform the same export file to install the target system which will be your Quality.
    Another option is that just restore the database via database restoration method then try to restore the JAVA stack by file system method which is i think not supported by SAP if i am not wrong but it can be done i tired the same on XI system.
