Backup/restoring messages

Hi,
This is kinda a little long winded but I wanna give full details so you get the best idea what's going on.
I backed up my phone and hard reset it.  I restored my messages, then a couple of days later it occurred to me that before I had done the restore I hadn't changed the settings regarding the storage of sent messages which is by default set to only save the last 20 sent messages.  I always keep it at 999 because I use the Conversation app to browse messages.  This meant that when I restored the backup only the 20 most recent messages had been put on so I needed to put the rest of the sent messages back on.
I had been receiving and sending messages for a couple of days when I noticed this, so what I did was to export to a csv file all of the messages that I had sent and received since the backup had been created. I then restored the original backup and then imported the new messages back in.
1st problem - I could move the messages I had received to my inbox just fine, but it seems there is no way to move the messages I had sent into my sent items.  Does anyoe know if there is a way to do this as I now have my sent items folder and a seperate one for the messages I had imported.
Now, this would be no biggie if Conversation would still pick them up and recognise them.  Which it sort of does, however, this is the bigger problem that it seems when I created the backup it changed the name format from First Name Last Name to Last Name First Name. So now in Conversation I have 2 conversations for each person, one from the backup which is listed in Last Name First Name format (and refuses to change) and one from any messages I sent/received since which display in whichever format I choose.
I tried changing the naming format to Last Name First Name then refreshing my Conversations (as it was the backed up messages that refused to change name format and they were stuck in Last Name First Name) but it still kept them seperate...
I then tried changing the naming format to Last Name First Name and creating a new backup, then restoring this.  This worked to a certain extent in that all the received messages were now grouped together in the Last Name First Name format (which could not be changed), but my sent messages were kept seperate (and would change naming format).  So now there were 2 lists for each person, one that contained my received items which were all listed in the format Last Name First Name and changing how names are displayed wouldn't affect this, and one with my sent items in which did change depending on how I set the name format.
What I think I would like to do is to be able to backup what I have in there currently, then open the NBU file and see what is causing it to keep them seperate and edit that to be uniform throughout.  However, the only NBU software I have found just allows you to browse what is in there and export it, but not edit it and resave it as an NBU file.
Does anyone know of a way round this as it is annoying now that the conversation app is essentially rendered useless for any of my old set of messages...
I guess what would solve this is if there was a way to change the naming convention of restored messages.
Something else I have noticed is that with the restored messages I can't reply to them.
I think in future I'm going to back them up manually and just use backup to restore sent messages...
Thanks,
Chris

Why don't you just replace the old backup with the new adjusted settings? If you replace the backup, don't import the settings.

I have a 32GB iPhone; only 13GB used!!!  HELP!  iCloud backup/restore did not work either! How can I resolve this problem to restore from back up.

If you're not a developer then you really should not have upgraded.
I'm unsure how you can fix this as you have already done a back-up on iOS 7 and apple don't support firmware downgrades.

When i executed t code db6cockpit, it shows me an alert in backup/restore tree.
    1. Database Backup
               database backup
last succesful backup - the last database backup is too far back in time

missing log files - log files are missing or have not been archived successfully.
    Please advise me....
Note: we schedule a weekly offline backup.

    hi,
    1) First you have to change db2 configuration parameter in DB.
In configuration you have to  enable " First log archive method                 (LOGARCHMETH1)" this prameter. then take offline backup.
    db2 connect to <DBSID>
    db2 get db cfg
    db2 update cfg   <Parametername> <Parameter>

  • Restoring Backup Error message

    Hello,
I´m restoring it NOT from Time Maschine Aperture excluded by Time Maschine,
I use a specifiec harddrive 500GB only reserved for Apertures backup.
I just tested it again. Backup - Restoring - Aperture Error during restoring if creating the project. * Send error report to Apple.
Can someone recommend to delete and install the software new ?
Of course first I make a copie from my Labrary.
Or should I give the iMAC to the Apple Service provider, because my display must be changed anyway ?
Does they handle SW too ?
    - Aperture without a safe Backup system is worth nothing.
    - My iMAC without well working Aperture SW would I give away anyway.
    Have fun more or less

  • Backup/Restore from PC Suite with N71 worthless

    Hi,
I have used Backup from PC Suite (Version 6.82.22.0) to backup my N71 data before I gave the N71 to a repair shop. The N71 camera was not working.
After four weeks I got a N71 replacement. A brand new N71 with a different serial number which is not good because some S60 apps now no longer work.
But anyway the real surprise I got was after I run Restore from PC Suite to get all data back. The Restore finished without any error but almost nothing useful was restored!!
No Contacts, No Messages, No phone Setup (Themes, Bluetooth Config, Apps).
    Huh???
Is this really how Backup/Restore from PC Suite with a Symbian S60 3rd Nokia N71 us supposed to work??
If yes, than Backup is utterly worthless!!
I am not aware that I did something wrong. I have used Backup regularly and never got any error messages.
But it is painfully obvious that the most important data from the phone are not saved!
All the Restore did was restore some audio and image files and the Notes contents.
    Regards,
    Gagome

you can check the backup log for the details of the backuped content. or try this tool to view the content of the .nbu.

  • Erase and sync issues (backup/restore)

    Hello.
I have an issue with the backup/restore with my iPhone.
Sometimes, it is difficult to find an answer that fits your problem exactly on the forum!  Lots of good stuff though!
This post will be little longer than normal, but I need to get all the facts on the table.
I'll try to keep this brief.  Please hear me out!
    From another post ...
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/12273122
    Kwopau stated ...
if you do a restore, you only have 2 options, Restore as new, meaning nothing will go on it
and you will just have to start fresh and no contacts will go in there.
The other option is "Restore from Back up _______" it will completely restore your phone
from your last back up and everything will be on there.
    End of quote ...
    Here is my situation.
    I have a 3g 16GB iPhone.
I am still running IOS 3 (not IOS 4).
I do not use sync.  I  manually manage the music and books with iTunes.
    I have an HP laptop.
A while ago, I had to completely rebuild the computer.
The computer has a new computer and user name (I don't know if this matters in iTune/iPhone matchup)?
I have not been able to connect the iPhone since then.
    Let me rephrase that.
I can connect with iTunes.  I can see all that is on the iPhone.
When I try to add or delete music or books on the iPhone with iTunes or set the manually manage check box, I get the following message ...
The iPhone "myname's iPhone" is synced with another iTunes library.
Do you want to erase this iPhone and sync with the this iTunes library.
Most commands appear to be grayed  out,  I can't add or delete anything.
I do not have anything in current  iTunes library at the moment.
    My fear is this.
If I do the erase and sync as suggested  (iPhone message above) to the iPhone and then use the new iTunes library,  will I be able to use the backup (I just created) to restore to the iPhone that I just reset?
If so, will it have contacts and all the other stuff?
I can afford to lose the music and books, and perhaps the apps on the iPhone.
I cannot afford to lose my contact list.
I need to find another way to backup the contact list, Outlook, etc?
If there other posts relative to this, please point me to them.
I am afraid to pull the trigger for fear that iTunes will not recognize the iPhone after the erase and sync and then not allow me to restore.
Perhaps someone can put my mind at ease and convince me that it will all be good if I proceed!
Thanks for you time and help in this matter ...
    Bob

Do you know how to transfer purchases? Connect the iPad to the PC and launch iTunes. Click on the iPad nema on the left side of the iTunes window to select it. Then go to File>Transfer Purchases. That should put all of your purchased iPad content into the iTunes library on the PC.
Here are instructions in a very short, easy to follow article.
Transfer iTunes Library to a new computer
This discussion will be helpful to show you how to make the PC work wTunes from the iPad.

This is the discussion from which I borrowed the some of the text in my post from the discussion above.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/11527071#11527071
What puzzles me is that if you had updated with the PC, I would have thought that you would have backed up and synced with that PC as well, but read the articles and instructions and post back with questions.
You can email the pdf files to the iPad, or use iOS file sharing, and open and save them in iBooks or another pdf reader app, but start with getting your stuff onto the PC.

  • Oracle 11GR1, Backup / Restore etc.

    Hi together
I'm looking for a DotNet API to control status messages, exception handling and so on in Oracle 11GR1.

Rman is part of the database, and is the backup/restore tool. There is no other way then to use rman (in a normal deployment), except a cold backup (file copy).

  • PC Suite & Nokia N95 Backup/Restore

My N95 doesn't seem to want to do a Backup let alone restore...
Keeps hanging at 66% backup when it hits 'phone specific' stuff - the last one on the list.
I have the most recent PC Suite - has anyone else suffered from this problem?
Yup, life sure moves pretty fast...

Out of interest do you get any type of error message when PC Suite is attempting to backup your Messages ? Also - give it some time to back up - I've left it for a good 20 minutes just to see whether it times out or comes back with any specific error message.
I experienced a similar issue and it was down to having to reinstall the MMS Sync component of PC Suite.
Two things I would try are :
    1) As a previous poster recommended - just try backing up to the memory card to see whether this works OK or not. Not being able to do so would indicate it's not a PC Suite related issue and localised to the phone itself.
    2) Try reinstall PC Suite functionality on the phone itself. With the N95 connected to your PC, load up PC Suite (the main program which gives an overview of all the applications that collectively comprise of PC Suite), then goto the Help Menu and choose "Reinstall PC Suite support on your phone" - then try backing up again.
If both of these steps fail, I'd recomend wiping your phone to a factory reset condition (although your memory card should NOT be affected if you follow the link below - but to be safe I'd take it out nevertheless !). The only problem with this solution is that it leaves you in the recursive problem of having to wipe a phone you want to take a backup of (!). Hopefully however, you won't have to do this ...
To reset your phone, follow the instructions in this link :
    /discussions/board/message?board.id=smartphones&message.id=4007
However please be aware that doing so will wipe ALL the data from your phone such as information in your calendar, contacts and so on.
In order to save your data you can use the PC Suite application to save and restore the data from your phone - this software can be found here :
    http://www.nokia.com/pcsuite
If this doesn't work then it's likely you have a hardware fault and you should approach your local Nokia Service Centre to get your phone fixed.
    Hope this helps.
Please let me know how you get on.
    Regards,
    Edward

  • Nokia 5800 (Backup Restore Problem)

    Hi!
Yesterday I made a Full phone backup with  PC Suite.
After that I was going thru all my message (approx 940 of them) in PC Suite, its much eaiser to go thru all with that.
And suddenly all messages dissapeared, I tried to reload but no message showed up....
I checked the inbox in my phone and everything was gone there to, even my GMAIL message and account information....
So I tried to restore the recently created backup BUT it said:
     Unable to restore : Messages
I unhooked the phone and clicked into the inbox and got this message:
"The selected memory isnt avaible, new messages will be saved in the phone memory"
So I tried to restore an backup from 21st December... same **bleep**.. unable to restore messages....
I had to go to a backup from 19th december, but now im missing several messages that I need..
Why isnt the 2 recently created backups working, is there something I can do to fix it ?
The difference was that on the 20th december I changed the message memory from phone to memory card.
And the phone moved everything to the memory card.. and it worked fine, I made an backup the day after.
and the 25th (today) and none of those 2 can be restored....
Only the backups with the message on the phone memory.. (everything else on the memory card works, pictures, movies, music etc etc. so the card is working..)
So PLEASE help me, I really want my messages back again.
    Best Regards, Dan Norberg

    Hi again (sorry for spamming)
Just finnished up formatting memorycard and soft reset of phone.
I have restored everything but my messages, The inbox says 974 messages.
But There is only arount half of that restored and in the inbox (only half showing in PC Suite)
Tried to restore the backup from yesterday with all my messages, but when I have done that (only messages/textmessages) and restart the phone it says: "The memory you are trying to use isnt avaible, messages will be saved in phone memory"
The strange thing is that I have opened the .nbu file with ABC Amber NBU and in that program I can see all messages until the backup was made...
So why are the PC Suite not restoring the messages correctly into the phone ?
I have the 8GB card that came with the phone inserted now instead of my 16GB Sandisk one.. (seems like the sandisk 16gb isnt good at all, 2nd time I had to format it....)
So any ideas what todo now to restore the messages inside the backup from yesterday ?
Cause if ABC Amner NBU program can read all messages then it should be possible to restore them to right ?
ATM I have saved all messages on the phone instead of the memory card, I dont trust the cards anymore..
So Please help me, I really want my text messages back into my phone..

  • Backup/Restore App -- stores backups where? "Delete record" does what?

I had used the Backup/Restore app under 4.1.x to backup the table to itself. Upon installing the 4.2.2 update, there was some message about did I want to delete unusable 4.1 Backups? IIRC, I said no. Went into the App to make sure I knew what I was about to "delete" and did a "Delete Backup Record".
Concern is that free storage changed much less than I expected. Not sure how big the backup would have been but it sure took a lot longer to write than only the hunderd or so MB freed up would suggest.
Any idea where the locally stored backups are stored ? Went looking with Astro and found nothing obvious...
Anybody can confirm "Delete Backup Record" actually deletes the backed-up data not just the metadata of it having been done?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Backups are stored in the folder ".semc-fullbackup" on the internal storage or SD-card. This is a hidden folder so you need to select Show hidden files in Astro.
Deleting a backup from Backup & restore show remove all files in that backup.

  • IPhone Backup / Restore questions

Maybe this has been covered here, but I am confused about backing up the data on my new iPhone -
    1) When iTunes says "backing up iPhone" before the sync . . . what is it backing up? Contacts? Music? Pictures? Applications?
    2) What does Restore do? It seems to indicate you will lose all of your data on the phone if you run restore.
    3) If I replace my phone . . . or Apple does at some point for a battery . . . will the Backup/Restore features in iTunes restore all of my contacts, music, pictures and applications to the new phone?
While most things with the iPhone seem pretty intuitive, this whole process has me confused.
    Dave

The backup that is created and maintained by iTunes stores data such as most iPhone settings, email account settings, SMS messages, notes created with the Notes application, recent calls, call favorites, data created and stored by 3rd party applications, and photos captured by your iPhone.
No need to backup iTunes content since your iTunes content remains on your computer and should be included with your computer's backup.
Regarding contact information and calendar events, the iPhone is designed to be synced with a supported application on your computer. The exception to this is with an Exchange account or MobileMe account, which provides for over the air syncing with this data.
With Vista, you can sync contact information and calendar events with Outlook 2003 or 2007, or Windows Contacts for contact information.
A Restore completely erases your iPhone followed by re-installing the current firmware version. After the current firmware version is re-installed, you are prompted to restore your iPhone from your iPhone's backup (which is the default selection), or as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup.
This must be followed by a sync with iTunes to re-transfer data not included with your iPhone's backup such as all iTunes content, 3rd party applications, contact information, calendar events, bookmarks, and photos transferred from your computer to your iPhone.
