Backup servers in another network

Hi,
How do I create a distributed cache map and specify the specific servers that will act as backup servers?
Say I have the following servers:
- Network A: A1, A2
- Network B: B1, B2
I want to create a distributed cache such that all the servers on Network A use servers from Network B as a backup server, and vice-versa for Network B.
How can I do this?
thanks,
Brendan

Hi Brendan,
This takes a bit of configuration. I just sent you an email with the HOT/HOT WAN architecture document, which should address this use case.

  • Anyone successfull w/ continuing TM backups to another network?

    Ok my situation:
I have a Mac 10.6.8 server and a external HD connected to server and shared as a Time Machine destination.
My 10.8.5 iMac connects to this HD w/  and is backing up is backing up to this TM drive
I would now like to disconnect that external HD and connect it to another remote Mac (non server) in another location, out of my network, and CONTINUE my iMac backups. Why? so I don't have to start a new TM backup of over 1.25TB over the internet to my externally mounted TM HD.
I did this already; connected the external HD that had my iMac TM backups, to a remote Mac, connected to it over AFP*, mounted the external HD and on my iMac, selected it as another disk to backup to and... it never gets backed up to. TM fail..
    I get:
"The Backup volume cannot be mounted"
I then noticed I cannot make a file on the external mounted HD, and I get a Finder error -50 when I try to do so.
Obviously there a permissions is I have..
but my question is has anyone been able accomplish what I'm trying to do? From one network TM backup to another network? If so how?
    Thanks!
*I don't plan to use this connection method for the long term, just for this testing I did so.

I backup to an external drive on my Airport Extreme network using an OWC NewerTech miniStack NAS 500G drive. It works fine with Time Machine.
Just to clarify the terminology, a NAS is not the same as an external HD. It's a small, special-purpose computer with a hard drive, not just a simple hard drive.
The difference may seem minor, but it can have major implications for Time Machine. See the pink box in #2 of [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
However, I just noticed that when click on TM to look at my listing of backups, they are showing as being there but are gray'd out. If I close TM and reopen it, the lines for the backup dates are bright again and I can scroll through them.
That may be a difference in the way you get there. If you start with a Finder window pointed to a new folder, for example, the lines for backups before that folder was created will be grayed-out, since there were no backups of that folder on those dates.
If in doubt, use the +*Browse ...+* option, per #17 in the FAQ.
As long as the backups are there, they're probably ok. Since they're on a NAS, you may or may not be able to repair them, following the directions for backups on a Time Capsule in #A5 of [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Do be very careful, however, using the Finder on your backups -- if you accidentally move, change, or delete things that way, the backups can be corrupted, perhaps beyond repair.

  • Time Machine couldn't complete the backup due to a network problem

Firstly apologies for the long post, I've been bottling these problems up and could now use some expert advice.
I have a MacPro (10.6.3) with four internal drives (320GB system/apps. + 3x 750GB data, images etc) and a MacBook Pro (10.6.6) with a 320GB internal. With so much accumulated data (Mac user since SE FDHD) I wanted a reliable means to backup all my projects, books, papers, research, images etc. I had several bad experiences using Iomega drives (Ultramax and Storcentre) which were not very Mac compatible and shifted over to a 10TB LaCie 5Big Network 2 which is promoted as Time Machine compatible. Set up Time Machine (with a few hiccups) in Sept 2010 and it ran perfectly, backing up both main computers until March 2011. I have now experienced a string of problems backing up the MacPro, some of which have been resolved speaking to people, some by checking forums and some by using my own noddle to figure it out. The latest error message I am getting is "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup due to a network problem. Make sure your computer and the backup disc are on the same network, and that the backup disc is turned on. Then try again to back up."
The circumstances of this are as follows: TM seems to be trying to completely back up everything already backed up from previous months so I am using the "exclude" option to do this in manageable chunks (5.54TB of 7.99TB is available so there is a lot of stuff on there, hence my reticence to erase and start again). I started a backup last night which said it was 242GB and when I came back hours later (I estimate 30GB and hour or 500MB a minute) it has failed with the error message above. I asked it to back up again and it said it now had 191GB to backup, at the next failure it was 142GB, dropping by approx 50GB a time (if there a maximum it can manage in one go?), the next time it was starting again with 242GB.
I checked the disc it was backing up to, discovered it was now selecting Public-1, re-selected Public which houses the macpro.sparsebundle, dropped the backup size (Options) to 73GB and set it off again and it is backing up as I write. I am hoping it will complete and permit another chunk to be backup but the fact it looses network connection (seemingly) or has a maximum backup in one go, is annoying because it means you cannot leave it overnight and trust it to do the backups.
The other problem seems to be a shut down by LaCie 5Big because several times (and once this morning) I have had this message "The file server "LaCie 5Big" has closed down, followed by a complete Lacie shut down and auto-reboot with all lights and whistles. Lacie think this could be a power supply problem and say they are sending me another power brick. They also say they do not support Time Machine (they should check their own literature) and suggest I use LaCie 5Big for 'drag and drop' backup. If I wanted to do that I could pick up a cheap and nasty HD from PCWorld, not this high end 10TB drive which cost over £1,000 !
For a while y'day I could not even find the Lacie on the network but after changing the ethernet cable from Lacie to router (Linksys) it miraculously re-appeared so that problem may have been the original Lacie blue ethernet cable had developed a fault. Checking cables is an oft-overlooked option.
A catalogue of errors, some solved, others still all pervading, so any words from the wise would be gratefully accepted.

I verified the macpro.sparsebundle and Time Machine backups in Disk Utility and it said both appeared to be Okay in green type. So that did not solve the issue. I did a Disk Utility repair a day or so again (despite Verify saying everything was fine) and said there was nothing to repair. I suspect two problems, the power brick may be faulty producing intermittent power and maybe causing the drive to close down (hopefully Lacie will send me a replacement to try) and second, I am thinking the network connection is getting dropped causing crashed backups without the Lacie shutdown/reboot sequence. The 73GB back up failed, I started it again at 54GB and it failed again, just started it again at 45GB - this is no way to progress!
Perhaps the relatively new (last year) Linksys router is the problem, I find my MBP says AirPort is active but it fails to appear in Go>Server unless I switch it off and on again and perhaps a similar problem drops the connnection to the Lacie.

  • Time Machine spends hours partially backing up and then fails with "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup due to a network problem."  Tried suggestions I've seen on the forum.

Time Machine spends hours partially backing up and then fails with "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup due to a network problem."  I've tried various suggestions I've seen on the forum but nothing has worked.  TIme Machine worked fine for the last two years and just suddenly started having this problem every time.  The only thing that was a little different is that the computer was off for a week while on vacation and then I added a large amount (20 GB) of photos. Now the requested backup size is 82GB, which is large, and process proceeds very slowly for 2-3 hours before failing with the message mentioned.  I have more than enough available backup storage space for it.  Before failing, Time Machine has backed up no more than 12GB or so of the backup.  It fails during different files each time.
I've turned off the computer sleep feature, and I've checked that the NAS is set to never automatically power down. I normally backup over Wi-Fi, but I've also tried connecting to Ethernet and it still has the same problem.  It's odd because I also have a MacBook Pro that is still backing up fine to the same NAS using the MacBook's Time Machine.
I am using an iMac with OS X 10.6.8 and an Iomega StorCenter ix2-200 NAS.
I have system logs that I can share if helpful.  The logged messages vary a bit from run to run, but here are some messages that I've been seeing:
I always get this message near the beginning of the backup:
Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: Macintosh HD
I've gotten this messsage a number of times:
    Bulk setting Spotlight attributes failed.

Those indicate that your NAS is not fully compatible with Snow Leopard.

Something caused a disconnect.  Can't tell from the log what it was.
I doubt it's a problem with something in OSX being damaged or corrupted, but reinstalling OSX isn't a major hassle, so might be worth a try.
To be incompatible with Snow Leopard, this NAS must be at least a couple of years old.  It may be beginning to fail.
Contact the maker.  See if there's an update to make it compatible with Snow Leopard.  If so, that might fix it.
If not, or if that doesn't fix it, see if they have any diagnostics that will shed any light.

  • The backup location does specified does not contain any backup. Specify another backup location.

We have our server set to backup to an internal HDD (E:), and then copy all the files in E: to different locations for storage (a NAS for instance).  I scheduled a copy to a USB drive, but I can't get the recovery wizard to see the backup it now contains.
I choose "A backup stored in another location" and then "Remote shared folder", as the USB (G:) does not show up in Local drives.  I now need to enter a UNC (it won't accept the "G:\" path), so I shared the USB drive and
enter "\\SERVER\G\2014-09-23", which is the path to the parent of the WindowsImageBackup folder on the USB drive.  At this point I get the above error "The backup location does specified does not contain any backup"
All the files look to have copied OK, and have the same Date Modified as on the server: as far as I can tell it's identical, and yet it won't mount. Help?

    Hi,
I would like to confirm the exact backup process:
When creating the backup, are you choosing "local drives" and then "G:", or Remote shared folder and then \\server\g\folder?
If it is a network path, could you restore it with \\server\g\folder instead?

    You might want to update Safari to 3.12. I would empty the safari cache. (Safari>Empty Cache). Then quit Safari. System Preferences>Network>Show:Airport>TCP/IP. Insert the following into the DNS Servers box;
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
then hit apply. Now launch Safari. You should also try powering down modem, router and Mac and power up in 2 minute sequence; modem, router, Mac.

  • Ftp to mac from another network

    Hi
I own an iMac running 10.4.8. I have enabled ftp access in the System Preferences.
Is it possible to access my Mac via ftp from another network?
What would I use for the Host Name instead of ftp://computername.home? Surely this would only work for computers on the same network...
Thanks for any help, this is really bugging me.

alright Im back. First a Small note. You may consider what other users offer as alternatives, depending on what it is that your trying to do. You also need to know that Any time to activate tools like FTP, your computer opens Ports to the Internet, which act like a Bug lamp to hackers scripts. Your computer is certain to be subject to attacks. Be sure to TURN off Web-Sharing or FTP when you dont need them. Or configure your Firewall for constant use.
This is going to be Long... You may want to Print it.
    That said, lets get started.
we will go from the point where in I will assume you currently have Normal Internet access. I will also assume that your internet is like mine, where the IP address rotates at intervals.
First thing you need: Static Address
since your ISP rotates your IP address, others will only be able to see you at that address until the Next rotation. This is a Dynamic address. What you want is Static IP. However your ISP, probably wants lots of $$$ up front to turn of the rotation for you... So then to get around this, for now anyway. You will need to sign up with a provider of Static addresses. It to is a scam, but it works so one need not ask to many questions. I personally use no-ip.com but there are many other providers, mostly free, no strings attached. A couple sites have been already suggested above take your pick.
Once you have settled on a provider you like, and hopefully has a decent User side Application! Register with them, and Follow their instructions. Choose something simple as your Unique web name appendage (like making a Profile nickname for a login). The address they give you, in full, is your computers base address. You can try it in your browser but it will probably time out.
You will now need to install the Software which should have also downloaded by now, and enter your registration info. The application now identifies your current IP address, and contacts the Home Server which is a massive Name Server. Now when some one on the outside enters that address, it goes to your IP providers Name Server. The name server knows your current IP from the program you installed. The visitor is passed along to your machine, without knowing the difference.
Now then, you need something to send out to the web! Built in to OSX are both a simple FTP utility, as well as Apache Server. You can Turn them on and Off from the Sharing Control panel.
As a Test you can now Turn on, Web-Sharing. Now enter your new address into your browser. You should get a Apache server page. This is the default installation on your computer. If you see this everything is working.
If you dont see the Apache page try again in about 5 mins. The server may not have updated the IP yet.
If it still fails, check the providers Application you installed. Check your settings. Mine are set to "Remote IP retrieved from Server."
If it still fails you may have a setup issue in the Router. But thats a topic for another reply.
Assuming that your Apache page came up. You can turn off Web-Sharing in Sharing. Your test is over. Your live! But wait, this isn't over.
Each user has their own append that the file system automatically handles. Its your user name preceded by a "~" or "/~username" Understand? You will need to add this appendage to your web address in order for others to see your "Personal" FTP or HTML. Otherwise they all end up at your default folders, the Apache folder. The servers config defined Root.
Your address should look something like this:
    http://trevsComp.no-ip.info/ (base)
    http://trevsComp.no-ip.info/~trevtherev (user directory)
for FTP, you will need to replace the HTTP, with FTP
if you dont, it wont work.
    ftp://trevsComp.no-ip.info/~trevtherev (user FTP)
To test your FTP connection enable the FTP in the Sharing Control. Then enter the Full address including your user name into your browser. If your in Safari, OSX will take over and a Drive Icon will pop up on your desktop! Its a Read/Download only, but perfect you simple downloads.
For more complicated downloads you may want a Real FTP application to actually login and have Read/Write access. But like others said, your passwords are sent unencrypted as TEXT and any one can intercept them.
If you dont Disable your FTP between uses.
    Your going to need Protection.
there is a File on your Drive called "ftpusers" I insist that you add your user name on this list. This Locks your name out of the FTP. This way No one can ever login with that user name. Why? Your the admin! its a huge risk!
Save the File and touch nothing Else in the Directory, that is unless your using Terminal to change the File. This is an Expert tip meaning if you found the Directory, dont tinker unless you know what your doing.
Now create a New user! Make sure that this user is Dumb. Meaning they have no access to any settings or other OS functions. You can put your Files in this users FTP folder, and enjoy far more safety. However, you will probably need to set up the Application you installed in your account, to be on this new one as well. So the new user may need Admin abilities only until your set up. Turn them off before enabling FTP.
You dont have to be logged in to the Dummy account for others to access it from FTP. It will still work. Be sure they have the Correct address. Remember the users name dictates where a Visitor will end up!
    ftp://trevsComp.no-ip.info/~dummy

  • Blackberry Pin assigned to another network provider

I have bought a Blackberry Curve 8520 off the internet and when I have contacted my mobile provider I have been told the BB Pin is assigned to another network.  How am I able to retrieve the details of this or resent the pin so it can be added to my current provider.

Only the previous user or yourself can request that the PIN be released from the previous account.
Normally that network will do this... and only not do so if the previous account is is unpaid or overdue, or the device was reported as lost of stolen.
So you need to get your seller to handle that, or get your money back.

  • How do I restore my iPad to a previous backup made on another computer (Mac)?

How do I restore my iPad to a previous backup made on another computer (a Mac)?
I made copies of the backup in the /mobilesync folder and put them on a hard drive. Now I'm in an endless cycle of restoring/syncing which keeps erasing data off of my iPad on the new computer (which is just a hard drive reformat...it's the same computer, technically, but in theory brand new after a hard drive formatting).
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Normally backups are incremental, and you can only restore the latest. EXCEPT that a backup of an earlier version is archived, and the first backup of the new version is thus complete. You should be able to restore a 6.1.4 backup to iOS 7. Click the Restore Backup button. The dialog that comes up should have a dropdown where you can select a backup to restore. If the old one does not show up it cannot be restored.
However, since you appear to have a Mac, if you use Time Machine you can restore an earlier backup over the current one from your Time Machine history.
You can also back up to iCloud, even if you don't sync to it. See: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5262
One well hidden feature (for future use) is archiving backups. If you go to iTunes Preferences/Devices, right click on the current backup and choose "Archive". The next backup you make will be a competely new one, and the old one will be preserved and can be restored at any time.

Using the personal hotspot feature on the iPhone 5, I am able to connect to the internet.  We also use Juniper NCP client to access our local system from a remote location.  A VPN connection is created, but I am unable to access servers in our network.  This same functionality works using my colleagues iPhone 4.
Both phones are running iOS 6.1.3.  I tried to reset network settings, but still unable to ping servers in our network.  This is a feature that our sales team relies heavily on when out of the office.  Hoping someone has some suggestions on what is different between the 2 phones.

    Hi,
Generally, this issue should be related with something called split tunneling, since you’re using a F5 vpn client, you need to look for something related to split tunneling in the F5 VPN client's documentations.
Here is an example, share it with you as a reference.
