Backup size always large; backups impact wireless KB & Mouse

I notice my hourly backups that used to be quick, now take much longer. I checked in on some backups and I am surprised to find they are over 500MB in size—no way I did that much work in an hour. In addition, they seem to take forever to finalize.
I have also noticed that while the backup occurs, my wireless keyboard will drop its connection as well as my wireless mouse. When I get the mouse to work, it drags extremely slowly across the page.
*Any fixes or ideas why this is happening?*

Are you using Entourage? Any slight change to email and the entire Entourage database updates, meaning that Time Capsule will backup the entire database, not just the small change. I believe this is known as a "monolithic" file.
There are other files like this, vmWare Fusion, Parallels Desktop, (Aperture?) come to mind based on input from other forum members. If you have one of these applications, you might want to exclude them from the regular TM backups to save space and time and back them up separately, maybe once or twice a day rather than hourly.
Speaking of backups, you might want to take a look at Time Machine Editor. http://timesoftware.free.fr/timemachineeditor/ It will allow you to schedule backups whenever you like.
Not sure on the slow mouse and keyboard symptoms as I haven't seen this on my Mac. Let's see if other forum members have seen this behavior.

  • Does Time Machine Backup irritate wireless Mighty Mouse?

    Hi there. I'm having a strange issue here. With an iMac that came with bluetooth mouse and keyboard, OS out of the box (no software updates installed because there's no internet connection), each time Time Machine is backuping files, the Mighty Mouse is acting weird. It actually feels like someone else is working with it. Even if I do not use it and leave it alone, the pointer goes wild on the screen. Trying to work during Time Machine backups is impossible, because I cannot use the Mouse properly.
    Does anyone of you have a similar, if not, the same issue? Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance,
    later, Stephan

    I am having a similar problem with my IMac and Time Machine. During wireless Time Machine backups, the wireless mighty mouse and wireless keyboard disconnect. If the mighty mouse remains connected, it moves very slowly and is virtually unusable.
    So far I've thought of two potential problems to troubleshoot:
    1. I experience this problem when I connect to the Time Machine through the "802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)" wireless connection (set in the AirPort Utility), but I don't experience the same problem when I connect to the Time Machine through a wired ethernet connection. So it appears the b/g compatible setting is causing interference. I haven't tested to see if the "802.11n only" wireless connections causes this problem or not.
    2. I also wonder if the IMac does not have enough RAM to complete the wireless backup. My IMac has 2gigs of RAM, and during backups it maxes out. I plan to upgrade to 4 gigs to see if the problem continues. (Stephan, how much RAM to you have installed?)
    peace,

  • Question: Will online backup impact database performance for DB6 V9.1

    Dear All,
    I would like to know will online backup impact the database performance? for eg: access will be slower if online backup is currently running. Appreciate if someone can shed some light on this as i'm new to DB6.
    I know for oracle it will impact due the performance due to tablespace are locked in backup mode and this will increaes I/O load due to every block is written to redo log during backup instead of just the changes.
    Hope to hear from you soon.
    Cheers,
    Nicholas Chang.

    Hello Nicholas,
    Here is some additional information on throttling utilities such as online backups:
    SET UTIL_IMPACT_PRIORITY command
    Changes the impact setting for a running utility. Using this command, you can:
    throttle a utility that was invoked in unthrottled mode
    unthrottle a throttled utility (disable throttling)
    reprioritize a throttled utility (useful if running multiple simultaneous throttled utilities)
    Scope
    Authorization
    One of the following:
    sysadm
    sysctrl
    sysmaint
    Required connection
    Instance. If there is more than one partition on the local machine, the attachment should be made to the correct partition. For example, suppose there are two partitions and a LIST UTILITIES command resulted in the following output:
    ID = 2
    Type = BACKUP
    Database Name = IWZ
    Partition Number = 1
    Description = online db
    Start Time = 07/19/2007 17:32:09.622395
    State = Executing
    Invocation Type = User
    Throttling:
    Priority = Unthrottled
    Progress Monitoring:
    Estimated Percentage Complete = 10
    Total Work = 97867649689 bytes
    Completed Work = 10124388481 bytes The instance attachment must be made to partition 1 in order to issue a SET UTIL_IMPACT_PRIORITY command against the utility with ID 2. To do this, set DB2NODE=1 in the environment and then issue the instance attachment command.
    Command syntax
    >>-SET UTIL_IMPACT_PRIORITY FORutility-idTOpriority----><
    Command parameters
    utility-id
    ID of the utility whose impact setting will be updated. IDs of running utilities can be obtained with the LIST UTILITIES command.
    TO priority
    Specifies an instance-level limit on the impact associated with running a utility. A value of 100 represents the highest priority and 1 represents the lowest priority. Setting priority to 0 will force a throttled utility to continue unthrottled. Setting priority to a non-zero value will force an unthrottled utility to continue in throttled mode.
    Examples
    The following example unthrottles the utility with ID 2.
       SET UTIL_IMPACT_PRIORITY FOR 2 TO 0
    The following example throttles the utility with ID 3 to priority 10. If the priority was 0 before the change then a previously unthrottled utility is now throttled. If the utility was previously throttled (priority had been set to a value greater than zero), then the utility has been reprioritized.
       SET UTIL_IMPACT_PRIORITY FOR 3 TO 10
    Relationship between UTIL_IMPACT_LIM and UTIL_IMPACT_PRIORITY settings
    The database manager configuration parameter util_impact_lim sets the limit on the impact throttled utilities can have on the overall workload of the machine. 0-99 is a throttled percentage, 100 is no throttling.
    The SET UTIL_IMPACT_PRIORITY command sets the priority that a particular utility has over the resources available to throttled utilities as defined by the util_impact_lim configuration parameter. (0 = unthrottled)
    Using the backup utility as an example, if the util_impact_lim=10, all utilities can have no more than a 10% average impact upon the total workload as judged by the throttling algorithm. Using two throttled utilities as an example:
    Backup with util_inpact_priority 70
    Runstats with util_impact_priority 50
    Both utilities combined should have no more than a 10% average impact on the total workload, and the utility with the higher priority will get more of the available workload resources. For both the backup and runstats operations, it is also possible to declare the impact priority within the command line of that utility. If you do not issue the SET UTIL_IMPACT_PRIORITY command, the utility will run unthrottled (irrespective of the setting of util_impact_lim).
    To view the current priority setting for the utilities that are running, you can use the LIST UTILITIES command.
    Usage notes
    Throttling requires that an impact policy be defined by setting the util_impact_lim configuration parameter.

  • Xp_smtp_sendmail file size is larger than allowed max sizer of 65536 bytes

    Hi,
    We have a daily routine which generates a text file and runs xp_smtp_sendmail with the @messagefile argument to use the text file in the body of the email.
    It has always worked fine but recently we have been receiving the following error when trying to run it:
      Error: @messagefile "Drive\Filename.txt" file size is larger then allowed max size of 65536 byte
    Funnily enough the file in question is 66,220 bytes so only just big enough to exceed this limit. The file in question is created from scratch on a daily basis so maybe this limit has always been in place
    and we are now exceeding it. My question is can we increase this limit somewhere and if so where? The SQL Statement I'm running is:
    EXEC master.dbo.xp_smtp_sendmail
    @To = '[email protected]',
    @From =  '[email protected]',
    @messagefile = 'Filepath\Filename.txt',
    @subject='Test please ignore',
    @server='smtp.servername.domain'
    Thanks in advance for any suggestions anyone has!

    The figures you mention only make sense on your intranet.  Are you still using the same wireless router.  The verizon one is somewhat limited as far as max wireless-n performace.  For one thing it only has a 2.4 radio.   I like many people who wanted wireless-n performance before they even added a wireless-n gigabit router, have my own handling my wireless-n network.

  • Hi all! What is the best way to create the correct space for baseball jersey names and numbers? along with making sure they are the right size for large printing.

    What is the best way to create the correct space for baseball jersey names and numbers? along with making sure they are the right size for large printing.

    Buying more hard drive space is a very valid option, here.  Editing takes up lots of room, you should never discount the idea of adding more when you need it.
    Another possibility is exporting to MXF OP1a using the AVC-I codec.  It's not lossless, but it is Master quality.  Plus the file size is a LOT smaller, so it may suit your needs.

  • What can I do for "File size too large"?

    Spent 9 hrs creating a slideshow that I saved.  Closed PSE 11 and reopened and can no longer find the slideshow.  When I select Find, Media type, Project, nothing appears, but there is a gray box in my grid that says "File size too large".  Is this my slideshow and if so how can I recover it?  I am sick as this was a large time investment for my daughter's wedding which is very soon!  Please help if you can.

    I don't know anything about slide shows but if a picture is too large this is just a warning message, if I click a pic with this message it does show up. Have you tried clicking the thumbnail?

  • Always larger Swap memory than compressed in Mavericks 10.9.3

    I bought MBP about 3 weeks ago and had an update to Mavericks 10.9.3 a few days ago.
    I am not sure if this problem started after the update, but I had never seen any "Swap Used" at least before the update.
    Now, if you look at the screenshot below, which is my current memory status, there is always a certain amount of Swap Used, and the amount is always larger / comparable to that of "Compressed" memory.
    I have never seen that my memory pressure goes to yellow or red, and I am not a heavy user either.
    Also, I have not felt any slow down of my mac yet.
    To my understanding, Mavericks is made to compress as much as possible before it starts to swap the memory with hard disks.  But it seems like mine does not work in that way for some reason now.
    The link below provides an enlightening explanation on how Mavericks manages its RAM.  In the test done in the article, you can notice that the Mavericks compresses more than 8 GB before it actually starts the swap process under a heavy load.
    http://arstechnica.com/apple/2013/10/os-x-10-9/17/
    So, what did happen to my Mavericks?  Why is it using the swap before it compresses more, leading to more Swap Used than Compressed?
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks,

    I would not be concerned about such tiny amounts of Ram

  • Individual cache size too large: maximum is 10TB

    Hi All,
    When application is trying to open environment the following error occur:
    individual cache size too large: maximum is 10TB
    All BDB parameters are default. Environment created with the following flags: DB_CREATE | DB_INIT_TXN | DB_INIT_LOCK | DB_INIT_LOG | DB_INIT_MPOOL | DB_THREAD | DB_REGISTER | DB_RECOVER;
    BDB version 4.8.24. OS Debian Linux 2.6.26-2-amd64
    What can cause this error?
    Modification of cache size in DB_CONFIG does not help.
    Thanks
    Edited by: user3578137 on Dec 17, 2009 7:54 AM

    No, cache parameters are not set, they are default. So it is strange.
    Here is the code:
    env_flags = DB_CREATE | DB_INIT_TXN | DB_INIT_LOCK | DB_INIT_LOG |
    DB_INIT_MPOOL | DB_THREAD | DB_REGISTER | DB_RECOVER;
    rc = db_env_create(&dbenv, 0);
    rc = dbenv->set_lk_detect(dbenv, DB_LOCK_MINWRITE);
    dbenv->set_event_notify(dbenv, db_event_callback);
    rc = dbenv->open(dbenv, work_dir, env_flags, 0);
    error checks are omitted.
    It works fine on machine with Fedora x64 and 1GB RAM, and error occurs on Debian x64 4GB RAM

    kernel panic, machine check, status 4 or 5, Uncorrected error is an uncorrectable (typically double-bit error) RAM Memory Error in a Mac Pro with Error Correcting Code ECC Memory.
    If you get lucky, the Address or the exact DIMM can be detected. You were not lucky in this report.
    If the same DIMM is detected bad at Startup, it (and its partner) will be marked "absent", and you will see that it is missing.
    If errors are being corrected before an uncorrectable error occurs, you can see those corrected errors show up:

  • The estimated project size is larger than the target media chosen

    I am at a loss for trying to author a project using Adobe Encore.  I first tried to author the project using version CS2.  When attempting to export I received the following message:
    "The estimated project size is larger than the target media chosen.  While this is an estimate, the project may fail to build."
    I have authored hundereds of projects in the past, but have never received that message before.  I first thought that the problem was with the version of Encore I was using, but I received the exact same error when trying to author the project with Encore CS5.
    The project itself has one menu, a motion menu, and one video file.  The video file last 152 minutes, and I was attempting to export that to a dual layer DVD.  I have since tried exporting the file using Adobe Premier CS5.5 using a variety of settings.  I am trying to export it to a DVD-2 file, with the match soure attributes being set to the highest setting.  The setting on the main concept MPEG encoder is set to 5. I have tried exporting the file using both constant and varaible bit rates.
    When I recently exported the file using a contant bit rate of 6.5, I still had 650.4 MB remaining on my Encore project.  I still received the same error about the project size, and so I am thinking that something else is wrong.
    I have even exported the video file as an uncompressed AVI file, and then tried encoding it again using both Adobe Premier CS5.5 and the Adobe Encoder.  I still get the same error message about file size.
    Any help and/or suggestions about how to solve this problem would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

    Using the Imgburn product worked! It also helped me figure out what the real problem was...
    As it turns out, some single-layer DVDs had been mixed in with my dual-layer DVDs. I feel very foolish about this.  All of my discs are printable, and so there is no indication written as far as what their capacity is on them.
    Encore can be a bit vague in identifying a problem such as this. For example, I can set the settings to plan for a dual-layer disc, and it will display a graphical status indicator with that capacity in mind. When I saw the original file message error I honestly believed that there was a problem with the encoded file instead of the type of disc itself.
    Imgburn instantly displayed the discrepancy in the type of disc I had loaded and the needed capacity for the type of project that I was trying to create.
    Thanks again for your help!

  • Help! VerifyError: stack size too large??

    I seem to have a class file with which the class file verifier has a complaint:
    D:\test\out>java Probe
    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.VerifyError: (class: Probe, method: main signature: ([Ljava/lang/String;)V) Stack size too large
    Can anybody point me towards documentation about what the algorithm is or should be to calculate the correct stack size. Or documentation on the message?
    I assume the meaning of the message is that the operand stack size is larger than used by the code for the static method main.  However, I haven't a clue as to the algorithm I should verify the size against.
    Thanks for any help suggestions

    Thanks for the suggestion. I am running a modified Class file and have read the jvm spec. I was hoping somebody would have a suggestion as to what the error message actually means...
    For example does this mean that the declared size of the operand stack is greater than that required by the code? Or perhaps that the declared size is too large for the code?
    The actual method is quite small (on the order of 500 instructions).
    I know that the jvm has a requirment that the operand stack have the same size along all control paths (loops, gotos, etc) to a specific instruction. I don't know what error the verifyer would give if this was the problem.
    Is there any documentation anywhere the verifier's error messages?
    Thanks for any help you can give.
