  • Time Machine backup slow in copying phase

    I've had a gander through Pondini's (excellent!) site and other locations, but still can't seem to get TM to backup at a regular pace.
    I've got it connected via ethernet, but with about 500GB to backup and a copying speed that managed to do only 40GB in 14 hours, it's waaaaaay too slow.  Current message says "Backing up: 44.01 GB of 499.82 GB"
    I've done various things like removing Sophos for Mac, relaunching Finder, checking the Activity Monitor to see if there's anything hogging CPU, re-booted my My Book Live NAS and a few other things besides.  Nothing's helped.  Below is a copy/paste of details from EtreCheck.  Can anyone help?

    In case it's useful to someone who stumbles on this some time in future, I had another look at Pondini's site and found mention of TechTool Pro causing issues, of which  I'm running v7.
    I went into System Settings/TechToolProtection and Disabled protection features.  After a minute or so, I got a bump in speed, with TM now copying a GB every 4 - 5 minutes.  Still very slow, but something of an improvement.

  • Time machine backup slow

    A few days ago I upgraded to 10.7.5. Since then I am NOT ABLE to complete a time machine backup. Last run was 12 hours and only 20% of the changes were backed up. In addition suddenly spotlight started to reindex and this also takes forever. Plus an important utility "EOS Utility" for managing pictures coming from Canon EOS cameras don't work any more. As soon as I plug in a camera the application quits.
    All this was running fine before the last minor upgrade!
    What's happening?

    All this was running fine before the last minor upgrade!
    Yes it was. Now it's not:
    time machine slow in 10.7.5
    Time Machine backup very slow in Lion
    Summary: the upgrade broke Spotlight, which manifests itself in absurdly slow Time Machine performance.
    We just have to wait for Apple to fix it.
    Don't know if your Canon EOS utility is related or not. Probably not I would think.

  • Time Capsule fast backup, SLOW internet!

    I hope someone can help me with this issue...it seems like it only just started a few days ago.
    So I have a 1TB time capsule and the wireless backup is really fast..like multiple MB/s.
    However, the internet surfing speed is really slow. YET, downloading speeds are relatively fast. It just seems like safari, firefox, AND chrome take an abnormally long time loading webpages. Is anyone else having this problem, or am I just crazy?? :/
    Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks ahead!

    Your not alone, there a loads of peaople out there with the same problem. I've got the same problem too. Only recently has this problem manifested itself.
    There a few suggested solutions on the internet, most seem to be with adding open DNS addresses in your network config panel. This hasn't resolved my issues. Others suggest adding a linksys router between the modem and Time Capsule...but spending more money on known problem doesn't seem the way to go. Wish I could help...

  • RMAN backup slow

    Hi,
    I have a Production Database (10204) running on HP Unix (B.11.11).
    Daily morning 6AM, a full RMAN backup runs. The db size is only around 225GB. But it takes 4.5 hours to complete.
    The syntax which I use is given below.
    RMAN> run {
         allocate channel ch1 type "sbt_tape";
         allocate channel ch2 type "sbt_tape";
         allocate channel ch3 type "sbt_tape";
    send
    'NB_ORA_CLIENT=jjcprd04-back.backup.ncsus.jnj.com,NB_ORA_POLICY=JJCPRD04-RMAN';
         backup
         format 'bk_%s_%p_%t'
         (database include current controlfile);
         sql 'alter system archive log current';
         backup
         format 'arch_%d_%s_%p_%t'
         (archivelog all delete input );
    Is there a way to increase the speed of this backup? Currently the backup is way too slow as it takes 4.5 hours to copy 225GB of data!
    Thanks!

    I'll start by stating that backups directly to tape are generally quite slow.
    I'd still recommend moving to disk backups though... and just archiving it to a tape...Hi Jony,
    You can of course backup to disk. Thats a common solution. But you have to deal with space more than everything. In addition to that backing up to disk does not free you from moving/copying your data - depending on your backup strategy - to a long-term storage.
    So you have two different and not conjunct backup operations: the rman backup itself and the job which backups the rman area to another media.
    In recovery cases you might end up with RMAN requesting older backupsets which are not on disk anymore. This will most probably lead to recovery failures and manual intervention which is not desirable in recovery scenarios.
    Another point is the control of the data flow. Backing up via a MML (i.e. "to tape") does not necessarily mean "to tape". Instead it means "to the backup software" which is responsible for managing the backup data. Common scenarios involve backing up the full backups via SAN directly to tape and backing up the archivelogs or incremental backups over LAN which will be stored by the backup software on a hard disk and later copied and/or moved on to tape. The data flow (to SAN / to disk / whereever) is solely controlled by the backup software.
    The advantage here is one continuous backup and restore job. The backup software deals with "where is my saveset located" and requests automatically the needed tapes or disks in recovery scenarios. This makes recoveries far more flexible and comfortable.
    Regarding the throughput i have set up a rather large OLTP database ( 12 TB currently) which is backed up with EMC Networker. Full backups are written via SAN directly to tape. The average speed with four LTO-3 drives is approx. 550 MB/s (the tape drives compress the data in hardware; the database itself is text-only and seems rather good compressable). I guess thats not too bad.
    you can also compress the BACKUPSETS (this generates a little more CPU but less network IO)He said he is on HP-UX. These kind of CPUs tend to be not that fast. Using compression is an option worth testing but there is another point to test when doing compressed backups: The RESTORE TIME.

  • Time Machine backups slowing down after 25 days

    I am experiencing a peculiar kind of behaviour from Time Machine under
    Mountain Lion (10.8.2). In the multiple threads on Time Machine issues,
    I could not find this exact problem described so I am wondering if
    anyone else has seen the same thing or even has a solution.
    Like for many others, the basic symptom is that Time Machine becomes
    extremely slow. In my case this always happens about 25 days after the
    last reboot. I am using a Mid 2010 27-inch IMAC and a Mid 2010 Mac Pro,
    both connected to a Time Capsule via ethernet. Both are showing the
    same behaviour.
    Originally I was letting Time Machine do its regular hourly backups,
    this has now been changed to twice a day using TimeMachineEditor. The
    change has made no difference, backups are still getting slow after
    25 days. This is accompanied by kernel_task gradually ramping up
    its CPU usage, from below a percent to several percent.
    Here are the backupd entries from a "normal" backup:
    This takes 3-4 min, which I find tolerable - although I
    am always surprised by the rather large number of files that
    are backed up even if the machine has remained idle:

    I have now rebooted the machine, and things are back to normal.
    In about 25 days, I fully expect that things will start to grind to
    a halt again. On the MacPro, which has now been running for 16
    days, things should be fine for another 9-10 days.

    These are the messages from the first slow backup. This one was only marginally slower than a normal backup, but a sure sign that things were going awry nonetheless:

  • After ERP Upgrade online backup slow down

    Hello,
    We have upgrade the system from 4.6c to ECC6.0 , after the upgrade backup is running slow on production. it could be because of Resource requirements for ECC. I would like to know how resource Consummation increase from 4.6c to ECC.
    ECC 6.0
    Solaris 5.10
    Thanks
    Atul-

    > I would like to know how resource Consummation increase from 4.6c to ECC.
    Very difficult to impossible to state generally. 4.6c is an ABAP only kernel whereas the Netwaever 7.0 kernel has interfaces to HTTP and SMTP as well as a full internet transaction server integrated. As a rule of thumb one could say you'd need the double the CPU power (in sense of single CPU speed, not number of CPUs) to run at the same speed as your old 4.6c.

    What's the output of
    psrinfo -v
    on your machine?

    Is it a "perfect" solution? Well, did it make your problem go away? If no, then it is not a "perfect" solution. If yes, then it may or may not be a "perfect" solution . . . depending on what the root problem was.
    BTW, 9i is as out of support as it gets.

  • Time Capsule backup slow

    Backup with time capsule takes a long time

    How is the TC setup?
    If you are using join a wireless network,.. that is worst possible world.
    If you use Lion there was a bug in the first update released.. 10.7.5 and there is a supplement. The bug was slow TM backups.

  • Time Machine backups slow down TC internet connection

    I'm having a problem with my TC internet connection slowing down dramatically. When I connect my DSL modem directly to my Mini, it's fine. When I connect it to the TC there are big slow downs off and on. I'm wondering if the backups done by TM slow down the internet connection and the network as a whole.

    Over ethernet no, it would have almost no effect.. over wireless yes.. it can have a big effect.
    How big are the backups generally? These should only be incremental and relatively small.
    Measure your actual speed of copying a file to the TC.. if you can put numbers to it, that will help. Use the Activity Monitor and see what is the average speed copying a file or when TM is backing up.
    Any improvements to the wireless speed will reduce the time the backup runs and how much time your internet is slow. Wireless is highly range and signal dependent. You might find a network rearrangement where you use the TC close to the Mini can solve the issue.. especially if you can connect to it by ethernet.. and then wireless bridge if you need to.

  • Incremental backup SLOW

    I'm using Time Machine to back up to an external drive (a sparsebundle on a drobo) and since upgrading to Snow Leopard, I've noticed it being ungodly slow. It's backing up much of the time, which is annoying because the computer as a whole is sluggish when it's backing up. According to the logs found through the TM Buddy widget, it backs up at a rate of roughly 1MB/minute. There are no indications of errors or anything off in the logs, but this obviously isn't how it should be.

    Yes, there are some reports of trouble backing-up to Drobos. Search this forum (and/or the Leopard Time Machine forum); you may find something useful there.
    If your backups seem to be too large considering how much you've changed, see #D4 Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip* at the top of this forum.
    If the size seems reasonable, but they're slow (as yours sure seem to be), see #D2 there.

  • Backup slow when syncing

    When I sync my iphone, it begins the backup process.  It seems to either stay there for an ungodly amount of time or it may never pass the backup stage.  How can i avoid this?  Thanks.

    I've discovered that iTunes is not actually hanging while backing up; it's just doing the job very slowly (as in 8 1/2 hours to do half a backup, at which point I gave up and pressed the X next to the progress bar).
    After that, the syncing itself went fine.  So I'm living a bit dangerously without a backup of my iPhone, but at least I've got all my info.
    If anyone hears of a fix for the slow-backup problem in iTunes, please pass the word.  I've already done a full reinstall of iTunes and restored my iPhone.  Neither of which seemed to have any effect of the slowness of the backup.
    Thanks.

  • TM backups slowing Snow Leopard to a crawl

    Every time TM backs up it takes four or five minutes, during which time the system gets unusably slow - up to a minute to activate a different window or bring up the dock, for example. I can't believe it's meant to be like this.
    I've had a look at the Troubleshooting and FAQs and searched the last years worth of posts, but nothing seems to quite address my problem. Please do point me in the direction of any solutions if there are any knocking about!
    I got hold or TM Buddy (the last log is below). TM is using about 80g of a 120g partition on an external firewire HD, which doesn't seem to have any other problems; backups are about 700meg, which seems large - I'm mostly wordprocessing, browsing or emailing.
    From the other posts, my current guess is that while TM does have a performace hit, it's not meant to last more than a few seconds. Is this right?
    If so, it's either deep traversal, or because my Gmail IMAP account is fully synched and it's about 1200mgs. It certainly takes Mail a while to load up. I'm a bit loathe to start archiving the mail because for me the whole point of Gmail is being able to search all my mail... however is there a solution for that I"m not aware of?
    Or shouldn't TM be hitting performance in the first place?
    Either way, how do I stop this happening?
    Thanks for your help in advance.

    Yes, that's rather long.
    It does include my gmail and previous postings would indicate that might mean a lot of small files, which might be taking the time.
    Since this was the first backup after disabling Spotlight, might the cleaning up time have included removing Spotlight info?
    No. They're entirely separate. They do both use the same mds (MetaData Server) process, and usually don't get in each other's way, but now and then they conflict. That's mostly on an initial full or other large backup, though.
    The external drive is a three month old Freecom, on a direct FW connection. I'm guessing this is 800 since it's newish.
    That depends on the drive and shape of the connector. But either way, your backups are rather slow.
    Certainly, it comfortably handles video files in Final Cut on a different partition so I don't think it's a HD issue as such.
    That could be a problem. If you're busily doing video editing on the same drive, both processes are contending for the same port. And if that partition is being backed-up by Time Machine, all the data has to go from one partition +*through your Mac+* and back to the other one, via the same port. And it's rather scary; when the TM drive fails (they all do, sooner or later), you risk losing both copies.
    Edit: My Gmail account has about 4500 messages, so not huge.
    Yes, that's large, but not huge. Are most of them in a single mailbox? If so, that could be a minor problem. Try quitting Mail, running a backup (via +Back Up Now+ from the TM icon in your menubar, or right-clicking the TM icon in your Dock), waiting several minutes, then running another backup. If the second one is much faster, that may be the problem.

  • Why is one backup slower

    I have 3 identical iMacs wired through a brand new gigabit router to Time Capsule in my loft.
    The backup speed of one of the iMacs is about 30% slower than the others.
    What could be causing this?

    It could be interference by another wireless signal, or perhaps the data on the slower iMac isn't as compressable as the data other two iMacs.

  • Time machine Backups slow

    It is best I describe my setup first.
    I have a mid 2011 iMac and a late 2008 MBP that both backup to Time Machine.
    The Backups are on a HD attached to the iMac. The Hard Drive is partitioned, one for each Time Machine Backups. So the iMac backs up directly, and the MBP backs up over my wireless network, and "through" the iMac.
    This setup has run fine for nearly a Year under Lion. After upgrading to ML on both machines, the Time Machine Back ups on the iMac are fast as before, but the MBP backups are very much slower than before. As I had swapped the HD in the MBP for a SSD about a Month ago, I wondered if all these changes had caused some problem with Time Machine, so I reformatted the MBP backup partition & did a brand new backup. This took about 36 Hours for 90GB, and the subsequent backups still seem slow, though a little better
    I understand the Apple do not encourage this way of backing up, but as the problem did not exist before, any suggestions on a fix, or just a matter of waiting for Apple?

    Take a look over at the Lion discussion area.. there is a huge bug in the Lion update that just came through.
    Everybody is struggling with TM and Spotlight.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3190305?tstart=0
    There are many more threads but at 29pages and counting this is the biggest.. 100,000views suggest a lot of people are in your boat .. if that is of any comfort.
    At least you can sink together!!
    This is what comes of trying to keep two OS up to date at once.. they manage testing on neither.

    Size of this database:
    SQL> select sum(user_bytes)/1024/1024/1024 from dba_data_files;
    SUM(USER_BYTES)/1024/1024/1024
    456.025085
    I have another database that runs on the same hardware platform, eith the same configuration, and under the same OS. and oracle instance has the same configuration (except oracle version: there is 9.2.0.8);
    Size of this, database is ~700Gb, and this database load is heavier that database with slow rman;
    But on this database rman makes full-db backup in 10 hours, usually;
    I read note 360443.1, and I checked - how long rman perform full database backup with validate option;
    This time, practicaly, is equal database backup time ~24 hours;
    Almost all database datafiles are splaced on disk array - stripe 10 and /db/u11 and /db/u12 - are mount points of two partitions created on this disk array;
    /db/u13 - this is raid 5;
    Now I wish to know in details - where time is spent and my question is: can anybody suggest me - what should I do for find it;

    You can see here that parameter filesystemio_options      has value DIRECTIO;
    This is becouse last week I had accident on this database and, as result, I had to turn off async io for oracle;
    All time before, since database mirgate moment, this parameter had value SETALL, and disk_asynch_io parameter had value true;
    And rman has kept his inappropriate behaviour since this time (e.g.: since database mirgate);
