Backup Software for Solaris 10

Can anyone give me ideas on what software to use to back up Solaris 10 Servers ( V240, 490, & 890). We researched Veritas and they want $15,000. Is there any software with some of the same features as Netbackup? Thanks in Advance!!!

without buying any software, how about trying a flarcreate - it's the only software that sun "officially" - or has stated as such on a support line - for backing up for purposes of duplicating a machine in the event of a failure (like having to copy your storage to another machine and build it up)
you may be able to get a number of things like that (Symantec's BMR) - but all of the other choices are $$s..
I guess it really depends what you're asking -
are you looking to use a tape jukebox/silo/library, or periodically copy your rootdisk (or data disks) to some other near site storage
Consider you didn't even state the word "tape" in your initial post, it's kind of hard to figure out where you're going with this - so let's try this from the beginning... what is the purpose of backing up your machine? Is it for nightly backups, one time backup, periodic rootdisk copies, flash archives, DR?
regards, and thanks in advance...

  • Free Backup software for NAS Box??

Try Veeam Endpoint software. Free and you can use the NAS as a target.

Hi all, I need some advise on getting a free software for a NAS box Seagate Black Armor 400.  The license that came with the unit is only valid for 5 computers and I need it for at least 20.
Is any free backup software for that works with this NAS that I can use? Like have incremental backups, schedule backups etc...

  • Need backup software for Seagate external hard drive

I need a little handholding here. I have an iBook G4 running 10.4.10. My husband bought me a Seagate external hard drive to use to back up the hard drive on my iBook. The only problem is that I don't think the external hard drive came with any software. I'm looking for something that I can set once that will automatically back up my hard drive periodically. Does such a thing exist?
Thanks for any advice you can provide.

    Hi there-
Most good backup software allows you to schedule backups. I've tried a number of programs and the two best I've found are SuperDuper and Synk.
Both are very user-friendly--good for simple folks like me.
    http://www.decimus.net/
    http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html
SuperDuper is my favorite because it easily allows you to "clone" your hard drive, giving you a bootable backup in case the worst happens to your computer and you need to restore everything. It's MUCH faster than reinstalling everything. You need to make sure your external hard drive is capable of being booted from, however.
Synk is also very user friendly and you can try it for 30 days for free. I would highly recommend either of these.
    Hope this helps.

  • Where is the Apps 11i adpater software for Solaris ?

    Hi,
I installed interconnect 10g on Solaris for testing. In the CD, I can install the adapters for MQ, DQ, AQ, SMTP and some others. But, I can't finf any trace of the software adapter for the Apps 11i ?
Someone can help me to find it for Solaris ?
    Thanks !

    Gilles,
According to the Oracle Data Sheet for Oracle Application Server 10g Integration Adapter for Oracle Applications...
"The adapter is available for Oracle 10g InterConnect version 9.0.4.0.2, which is packaged with Oracle Application Server - Enterprise Edition."
It then goes on to say ... "Together with the Oracle AS 10g InterConnect, the Oracle Applications Adapter provides the necessary infrastructure to integrate Oracle Applications with the rest of your extended enterprise."
To me it sounds like the Apps Adapter doesn't come with OracleAS 10g Integration (or InterConnect :-) ), but with the Oracle Application Server - EE.
Hope this points you in the right direction.
    Cheers

  • Backup solutions for Solaris 10 systems

I am trying to put together a backup solution for a number of SunFire V240 systems running Solaris 10. We do run our backups using NetWorker, along with a couple of high powered back up systems. But this solution I am trying to create is something that can be performed by our first responders, our help desk folks. The systems in question are already in production but we do have days where we can bring them down for maintenance or whatever we need to do. Therefore, I can implement this new solution during the day(s) of maintenance time.
I was looking at using Solaris Volume Manager and its metadata configurations. But I am unsure how to start with files sytems already created. I want to be able to have a backup of the boot disk in the event that the hard drive in which it resides goes down. I want our help desk folks be able to immediately bring the system right back up with little down time during the evening to late hours.
I guess what I am looking for are exact steps to help configure this backup solution with Solaris Volume Manager for our production systems. Can anyone help?

    Hey there,
Have a look at this excellent guide. I think that you may find what you need here. If not drop an email back. To begin with you need an extra disk(s) since you will mirror your data. This is sort of a pre-requisite.
    Good luck,

  • Backup software for early '04 iBook?

I bought a used early '04 1.07GHz 12" iBook (M9426LL/A) w/no restore software. Tiger was already loaded which I have updated to 10.4.11 but I'd like to have backup software. Apple tells me this iBook had Panther 10.3.3 installed when new. Question: Is there any need to purchase original software as backup (in case of a crash, resale, erase personal data from hard drive, etc.) or, at this point, will a retail copy of Tiger suffice? I have looked for 10.3.3 restore software on eBay and Craigslist but seems hard to come by unless I want pay Apple $$$.
    Thanks all.

Gotcha. I guess what's confusing are eBay ads like this one:
    +MAC OS X 10.4 TIGER INSTALL DVD - FULL RETAIL VERSION+
+This Mac OS X Tiger is a FULL INSTALL version of 10.4 upgradable to 10.4.11 free through Apple website and it will install on any Mac as long as you meet hardware requirements listed below.+
+You will receive 1 DVD with full version.+
    +System Requirement:+
    +-Power G3, G4, G5.+
    +-DVD drive.+
    +-256 MB memory at least.+
    +-3 GB available HD space.+
+This is a FULL version, NOT an upgrade which can't do a full install.+
I've seen retail Tiger UPGRADE discs available on Craigslist and eBay. It's a little confusing which does what and which is the one I might need.

  • The best backup software for mac os 10.4.8?

    Hi,
I'm new on mac, I just got tired of PC and windows so I decided to make a change, a really good change.
First of all to say that I've been looking for an answer of this question around the forums, but havn't got what I'm looking for. What I've found is that people prefere freeware, I just want good stuff.
I'm not sure if this is the right forum to place my topic, but is not a bad one either.
    Anyway, here is my question.
I need to clone and do incremental backups, but I have to be extremely sure that the software I use is completly trustfull and secure, so I do not care if I have to pay 100€ (not much more thouh), just want to be sure I get everything works right.
I also prefere software that only does clone and backups than a multitask soft.
Well, if u have any question just ask, u're the ones who really know about this things.
    Thanks, everything is wellcome here.

You will find information on backup in this:
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.0 is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.2 is Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. The current version, 1.5.1, is Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.

  • Backup Software For backing up Raid Drives and main hardrive system

i'm, looking for the best software for backing up raid drives. i have rocstor raids. they said retrospect was best but after reading reviews they were not that good. i use super duper but they said for raid drives you need more than a free program
    any ideas
    thanks

I use Time Machine in conjunction with SuperDuper for my backups. I tend to use the simplistic of >the restores in Time Machine for restoring files whereas I like the speed of SuperDuper if a clone is >required. I also like the redundancy of multiple backups by different techniques.
Yes I think its a good strategy. Time machine is great for "undeleteing" if you see what I mean but a clone gets things working again very quickly after a disaster and even if you don't have time to restore you can still boot your computer. I have CCC do an incremental backup every evening at 3am.

  • Recommend Backup Software for OS 10.3?

I need to get some backup software so I can backup only new files and files that have been changed. Can someone recommend a good utility for doing this on OS 10.3?
    Thank you!

If you get the downloads through another computer online,
be sure they are the correct stand-alone items; then you
can choose to never go online with the 10.3.x computer.
I have and use a USB thumb drive or flash drive to get
extra files between computers so they don't need to go
and do the same duty in duplicate online; this would also
work to get the actual files you needed via another Mac.
Be sure they are the correct ones, first, of course.
There are no currently supported browsers, for the most
part, for Panther 10.3.9; so secure online browsing is a
thing that may be problematic or issue-prone; yet the
internal server to Support updates, and the Software Update
app can probably be used to get info or the files you'd want.
And you need not install all of the found updates; yet by
now, those in-between and questionable ones would be
fewer than they were in the day they were new. I had a
few issues in Panther (and avoided some, then) in the
updates in-between. So, by now, there should be none.
In one sense, the Software Update app may be helpful
in finding the correct names of the files, then get the
few you actually may need, more manually from Support.
The 10.3.9 Combo, and the last security update, plus any
Java update(s) are likely to include actual useful offline
update materials. A few Panther/Tiger users had an odd
issue with going/staying online after one of the small step
updates to 10.3 at one point, and it was problematic. A
last Combo plus security update may avoid the issue.
This may be a mute issue at this late a date; but may be
worth checking into further, as far as it goes. And most
items made for Panther 10.3 generally were updated as
far as the last full stop 10.3.9; a few required that level.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Best backup software for individual folders?

I already use Carbon Copy Cloner to make a clone of my Macintosh HD to my External HD, but now I'm looking for backup software that will back up just my music, photos, individual folders etc. I like Apple's Backup, but I'm not prepared to pay the money for .Mac when I'm only going to use 1 app. Any suggestions? (preferably freeware, but I don't mind shareware)

i like deja vu very much, although it, too is not free...

  • Best Backup Practice for Solaris 10 running Zones

What is the best practice for backing up a solaris 10 server with zones?
I have solaris 10 installed here on a v240 running 4 zones. All services run off the local zones. We use Veritas backup exec 9, and I have the solaris agent. Should I backup the Data on each of the zones as if they were their own system , or should I only run the backup exec agent on the global zone?
It would make sence to just backup from the global zone, as it is only one system to backup.
We are working on our backup procedures now, and I want to make sure that we are doing this the best way possible.
    any thoughts?

    Hi immi74
You could use Logomanager but hardly cost effective as would need software and cable.

Perhaps consider SIM backup reader instead.

  • Cloud Backup Software for mac?

    Hello
At this moment we backup our Server Data to an external RAID1 and take them out of the office 3 days a week.
Now we intend to store the Backups to an own Cloud Service at a private place, with an NAS or an macmini server. The Speed of the Internet ist Fast Enough Down 250000 kbit/s - Up 15000 kbit/s.
We can't subrscribe to most of the most of the cloud service availible because of legal rules the sensible data doesn't allowed to be stored abroad.
Is their a got software which is able to backup the data over the internet device connected in the net. (If possible without an NSA BackDoor)
    regards
    Gérard

If there is some national security entity is interested in or actively targeting your organization, then you're already toast.  Such entities are far better funded, with far more experience and tools, and have far greater reach than most any private entity can ever manage.
cpragman has discussed some of the details of the general backup sequence, if you're using some of the standard, commercial tools.
If you're thinking of "rolling your own scheme", and based on what I'm inferring was a reference to OwnCloud (or to running your own storage on your own (remote) server, that's little more than encrypting your data locally, and pushing the wads of data to your own remote storage server.  Biggest issues here tend to be the recovery testing, the details of the implementation of the encryption used, and also obviously scrupulously controlling access to your keys; PKE will work here and means you can keep your private keys more tightly controlled — encrypt the data to the public key of the "backups"), as will AES or similar symmetric encryption.  The data encryption itself is a fairly isolated part of this whole backup processing, and various security mistakes tend happen with the handling and with processing around that — not within the encryption itself — when you're using the typical encryption tools correctly.
Compress your data before you encrypt it.  Only then transfer it.   Properly encrypted data does not compress.
I'd probably then transfer the files to the remote site with sftp or similar, or via VPN.  Preferably with PFS enabled, if you're sufficiently paranoid.
Calculate using your 15 ~Mbps link speed against the volume of data involved; against the average backup transfer size when compressed and encrypted.   That'll tell you how long the transfers will require, and whether that link is fast enough.  If it's not, you'll either need to do partial transfers — which are more complex to manage and to restore — or you'll need a faster link.
Test the complete recovery process from whatever you implement.  At least once, and preferably periodically.  Document it, too, as you won't be thinking as clearly when the server(s) are down.
Some comments from folks that have used OwnCloud on Mac and Linux.

  • Backup software for 10.2.8

OK, now that I have an external hard drive - I am trying to backup my Mac on OS 10.2.8. Per input here, I checked out Super Duper. This program does not seem to support OS 10.2.8. I want to back up, but really do not have time to fool with a complicated (or expensive) program, etc. Any other ideas??? Thanks!!!

    http://www.versiontracker.com/macosx/
If it exists, they'll have it. I do all my backups manually in 10.2.8. It only takes a few seconds and I know exactly what has been backed-up.
