Backup solutions for FCP 5 with external FireWire LaCie disks

Hi guys!
I'm using a G4 mirrored door Dual and OS 10.4.8.
On external LaCiel d2 disk (160 to 300 GB) I store my footage, project files and other assets for different projects.
After having some trouble with lost "partitition table" on one disk and accidentally replacing an existing Capture Scratch with an emtpy one, I realise I must look for a system to backup my disks.
What do you suggest? I guess a disk-based system is cheaper, but tape feels more reliable.
What tape format should I look into?
All suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Listen to Shane.
You've already got all your footage on Betacam... hang on to it. It may not be environmentally friendly, but tape is cheap and when stored properly, lasts a long time. I can go back a recapture things I shot on Betacam long before the concept of footage on hard drives existed, and believe me, it comes in handy when a client wants to put a corporate history show together.
The only thing I put to tape for archive is a DV copy of my completed timelines. I find these come in handy when a client wants a simple change (cut out Joe cause we fired him last week) If it's simple enough I simply recapture that master tape and edit using it rather than re-capture all the footage necessary to recreate a timeline.
Have fun

  • Backup Solutions for my MacBook Pro+

I have a Macbook Pro (2010) w/500gb hard drive. I have one 500gb external hard drive that holds movies and my Aperture library. My current backup solution is a 2nd external hard drive (2TB) that I attach to my laptop while my smaller external hard drive is attached (it is not excluded from the backup).
I manually attach the laptop and 500gb ehd every week or so to backup to Time Machine
The problem?  My laptop is approaching it's limit and I'm thinking that I need to move my iPhoto library off to an ehd as well.
I'm wondering if backing up to my Time Machine drive with a laptop and two ehd (each 500 gb) is smart or if I need to backup those hard drives to other ehd separately.
Also, I plan to buy an iMac for my family in the next couple of months.  Not sure how that should impact my backup configuration.
I've also heard that in addition to Time Machine I might consider getting an ehd specifically with the purpose of being a bootable drive (via Super Duper)
With all of these options my head is swimming a bit.
Would love recommendations for a backup workflow/solution based on my equipment.
    Thoughts?

Pretty much any drive will work, but for a laptop, you might like to get a portable drive (doesn't require that you connect it to power) with USB3. Thunderbolt drives are also available, but they're more expensive and no faster than USB3 for a single hard drive.
I personally like the Lacie rugged series: http://store.apple.com/us/product/H9377ZM/A/lacie-1tb-rugged-hard-drive-triple-u sb-30-5400-rpm?fnode=5f
If you shop around you should be able to get it a little cheaper than Apple's prices.

  • Serious problems after Mavericks installation with External Drive Lacie P9220.

Experiencing serious problems after Mavericks installation with External Drive Lacie P9220 1TB. Mac Finder totally locked!
I had to format the External hard drive with a Windows PC (fat32), then format again with my IMac (mac Journal.) and hopefully restored data from time machine backup.
So far so good but system looks unstable. Some software were not able to write on the hard drive. Some strange things happens. With Mountain Lion never had an even minor issue.
I read many discussion regarding problems with WD, just wondering if anyone had the same problems with Lacie and if there is any tip to solve the
    problem.
    Many thanks.
    Marco

Thanks very much for your reply.
Unfortunately I couldn't find a solution because the article refers to whom have configured the drive with included software and drivers that came with the drive.
This is not my case, I never used any third party soft ...only OS X disk utility ...

  • What is the best & cheap backup solution for a macpro laptop?

What is the best & cheap backup solution for a macpro laptop? easy & simple to use

    Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components: 1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences; and, 2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    SuperDuper!
    Synk Pro
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined.  It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.)  You can purchase hard drives separately.  This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice.  Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu.  You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available.  You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports.  I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.)  You can find enclosures at places such as;
    Cool Drives
    OWC
    WiebeTech
    Firewire Direct
    California Drives
    NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover.  Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

  • Backup solutions for Solaris 10 systems

I am trying to put together a backup solution for a number of SunFire V240 systems running Solaris 10. We do run our backups using NetWorker, along with a couple of high powered back up systems. But this solution I am trying to create is something that can be performed by our first responders, our help desk folks. The systems in question are already in production but we do have days where we can bring them down for maintenance or whatever we need to do. Therefore, I can implement this new solution during the day(s) of maintenance time.
I was looking at using Solaris Volume Manager and its metadata configurations. But I am unsure how to start with files sytems already created. I want to be able to have a backup of the boot disk in the event that the hard drive in which it resides goes down. I want our help desk folks be able to immediately bring the system right back up with little down time during the evening to late hours.
I guess what I am looking for are exact steps to help configure this backup solution with Solaris Volume Manager for our production systems. Can anyone help?

    Hey there,
Have a look at this excellent guide. I think that you may find what you need here. If not drop an email back. To begin with you need an extra disk(s) since you will mirror your data. This is sort of a pre-requisite.
    Good luck,

Hi sir im using fcp 7 for video editing in i mac, how can i edit mts files in fcp 7 without log n transfer, is their solution for fcp 7?

    >No, you are not right.
Going to question the biggest contributor to this forum?  (Yes, my ego is talking).  OK then...
    >Install the QT-Plugin, restart your Mac and you will be able to import and use .mts files in FCP 7.
Sure...yes, that makes it POSSIBLE to read the files natively in FCP...if they come from a Panasonic camera. BUT...just try working with those files.  Right away the system won't be nearly as responsive as it would if they were ProRes. First...there are no sequence settings for that format...so you'll have to use ProRes and have a green render bar.  BUT, that's no big deal.  The big deal is trying to work with the AVCHD format, which is VERY processor intensive...inside an application that doesn't like to work with much outside of the FCP editing codecs.
Is it possible? Sure? Will it work well...will you be as zippy and error free as if you converted to ProRes? Not by a long shot.  OH, but don't just take my word for it.  Go ahead...try it and see.  No skin off my nose...no waste of my time.  See how well this works.
I'm just here to relate real world working solutions to issues.  And yes, I did try that plugin, and boy, was editing a pain.

    - OS tar command"  to copy the Oracle application which is represented by the apps* folder --> correct me if I am wrong, I am not sure...Correct.
    - I am not sure what is the function of the INST folder and what is the best way of backing it up.Please refer to the "Oracle Applications Concepts" manual for details about the INST folder.
You need to use the OS command to backup this top, just the same way you back up the application tier node files.

  • Help needed for choosing Cisco recommended VM Backup solution for UCCE & CUCM 8.5

    Hi
We are planning to install a reliable backup solution for our UCCE platform ( ESX(i) 4.x & 5.x  )
if someone can share the details of Cisco recommended VM ware backup solution for UCCE 8.5 , it would be really helpful .
    Regards
    Renni John

    Hello,
    -    Snapshot procedure of VMs is not supported by Cisco for UCCE servers.  Please refer table "VMware Feature Support for Contact Center 8.0(2) through 10.x" on below link:
    o    http://docwiki.cisco.com/wiki/Unified_Communications_VMware_Requirements#Supported_Editions_and_Features_of_VMware_vSphere_ESXi.2C_VMware_vCenter_and_VMware_vSphere_Client
    -    Same above link refers to use "Copy" feature of VM to take backup of servers, but it is a very lengthy procedure which requires extensive command line knowledge of UCS.  Moreover VM should be shut down for this procedure.   This can be used as one time backup of server; but cant be used as scheduled back up method.

  • Disk Utility Unable to Repair External FireWire Hard Disk

    Hello all.
This is the External FireWire Hard Disk that has been giving me problems for days, it is a Backup/Clone Disk of my sis's Mac mini Core Duo, and may explain why it was so hard and took so much pain to copy some of the data out, at times it failed to mount, and I manage to rescue some data after using Disk Warrior, but Disk Warrior was also unable to replace it with a new directory.
Anyway, so I (was able to) mount the hard disk, and I was successful in erase and reformating it.
But when I (try to) repair it with Disk Utility's First Aid, this report is what I get:
(The usual 'Checking...' text lines, text in BOLD indicates RED colour text)
    Checking HFS Plus volume
    Checking Extents Overflow file
    Checking Catalog file
    Checking Catalog hierarchy
    Checking volume bitmap
Volume Bit Map needs minor repair
    Checking volume information
The volume Untitled could not be repaired after 3 attempts
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
    Repair attempted on 1 volume
1 volume could not be repaired
Then a window dropped down from the top says:
    First Aid failed
Disk Utility stopped repairing "Untitled" because the following error was encountered:
The underlying task reported failure on exit
    (OK Button)
I guess this hard disk is really a gone case?? I am quite OK just to replace it with a brand new one... maybe all the trouble I had in the beginning is because I may already have a faulty backup drive to begin with???
    Thanks and cheers

    Hi Kappy,
I knew there was something about "not mixing" PPC and Intel versions of dealing with the external drive.
The drive was originally prepared on an Intel Mac mini Core Duo. But it should also mount normally on a PPC mac as an external hard drive right?
    Here's the sequence of events:
    1. Tried to boot from the Back Up/Clone Drive of the Mac mini Core Duo, through my MacBook Core 2 Duo, but failed to boot up
I had to shut down the MacBook (prolonged Bluescreen)
    2. When I reboot the MacBook, and tried to mount the ext drive as normal, nothing happens, I knew something was wrong
    3. Able to reach the vendor, use the Mac mini again to erase and reformat the drive, then check with DU, everything is OK
    Clone with SuperDuper
After that check again with DU, not everything is alright, there are errors.
    4. Brought the drive home, try to mount on my iMac G5, nothing happens.
I did a check on this forum, and the reply was that I should be able to use Disk Warrior 4 (Universal) on a PPC to fix an Intel-based ext drive. I was very specific and detail in my post/question
    5. So anyway, I have no other option, I ran Disk Warrior 4 from my PPC iMac G5 and scan the ext drive, trying to fix it.
It reported the drive is too damaged to be replace with a new Directory, but gave me a Preview Mode. I use this to copy some data out.
But not sure if the data is OK or not.
    6. After that, I was able to mount the drive in my iMac G5, so I just use DU and erase and reformat the drive, with Zero Data
    7. Ran DU again, and that's where I am now, at the very first post, getting error messages that I cannot fix the drive
    Thanks and cheers

  • What's the best external backup solution for the 2011 MacBook Air?

I'm really considering moving to a new 2011 13" MacBook Air for my primary machine and I'm curious to know what ya'll might suggest for the ideal backup solution.
Currently I use a Firewire 800 drive with my MacBook Pro consisting of a Bootable OS backup, Media volume backup, Time Machine backup + blank volume for files.
The current external options available —Thunderbolt release date anyone?—are: USB 2.0 and Time Capsule. Lately—and a first up until now—I've started thinking about potentialy moving my backup solution online. I'm curious if anyone has experience with an affordable, simple, online solution?
Also, don't suppose any kind of storage solutions could utilize the SD card slot in any way?
I look forward to hearing about your backup solutions!
    All the best,
    —Jordan

Redundancy is more important than speed when it comes to backup.
I like a have a clone of my internal drive to an external drive of the same size. If your internal drive fails you can boot from your external clone. I use SuperDuper!
If your data is important to you, you should keep a backup off-site and have more than one backup set.
Cloud storage is an option if you have fast broadband and small data volumes.
I like the simplicity of Time Machine with Time Capsule for incremental and version backups.
Rather than invest in Thunderbolt (expensive and fast), invest in redundancy (cheap, slow).

  • Backup Solutions for our iMac

We just narrowly escaped losing our hard drive due to maxing it out - 319GB or 320 used.  The reason?  I procrastinated creating a backup solution.  Now we need to move forward and am looking for suggestions as to the best route.  As background, our system currently consists of:
    (1) Macbook Air (2012)
    (1) iMac (mid 2007, Intel)
    (1) 2wiregateway wireless router (AT&T Broadband)
Online back-up via Backblaze (am considering switching to Crashplan or Carbonite)
We need a solution that will provide:
automatic wireless back-ups of both machines though I could hardwire our desktop if need be - TC?
external disk storage for our media (e.g., photos, music and video files) - WD, SG, IOM linked to TC, needs to be backed up using TM
media server - access from Macbook Air, iPad (future), iPhone (future), any wireless device playing iTunes; e.g., Denon receiver (future need)
I purchased and tried to set-up a Seagate GoFlex Home option but the wireless set-up via the 2wire has been difficult and I've had no luck with linking it as a drive for Time Machine. I plan to return based on feedback (regarding my set-up options).  Like everyone, we want to 'future proof', however, we're NOT large media purchasers so excessive storage is not an issue - mostly photo files.  We're mainly focused on ease, durability and costs.
This is what i was thinking:
automatic wireless back-ups of both machines - Time Machine/Time Capsule ($300+)
external disk storage for our media - external harddrive (WD, SG, IOM) connected via Ethernet to TC or as it's a store server, hardwire this one (firewire) to the desktop.  This too will need to be backed up using Time Machine  ($150+)
media server - ?  Again, secondary future need
    Thoughts?

Thanks for all of the feedback. I've sat down and drawn out an updated solution (see below).  I think this will meet all of our needs but would love all and any feedback including on my drive selections/options.  Our modified 'need' list.
external disk storage for our media (e.g., photos, music and video files) [External Hard Drive FW800 connection]
automatic wireless data back-ups of both machines [Time Capsule]
bootable local back-up of both machines [External Hard Drive with Super Duper linked to Time Capsule]
media server - access from Macbook Air, iPad (future), iPhone (future) [iCloud]
    network printer connection [Time Capsule]
off-site data back-ups of both machines [Back Blaze/Carbonite]
Does this make sense?  Overkill?  Thoughts regarding Iomega drives?

  • Best storage solution for FCP HDV projects?

What is the best storage solution for Final Cut Pro HDV projects (i.e. internal or external drives, SCSI, external firewire drives, etc.)?

Don't forget you can also use the "Send to Tape" command to send your footage back to miniDV HDV tape. This isn't the ultimate solution, but is a good way to cheaply "backup" large projects to inexpensive tape without killing your drive storage with every project.
Here's a new feature request for Media Manager... Forget that. I'll start a new post for it.

  • What online backup solution is best with Time Capsule?

I am trying to find an online backup solution that is compatible with Time Machine's Time Capsule.  I tried ZipCloud, but while using ZipCloud my Time Capsule failed to backup.  It would issue an error something-"sparsebundle" was already in use by another program and therefore Time Capsule would not backup.  I worked with ZipCloud's technical support, but was unable to find a solution.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    cfirtion wrote:

See #C12 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting, but that's probably unresolvable.
I don't know how that app is supposed to work, but usually only one user can access a sparse bundle disk image at a time.  If the app is supposed to be backing-up your backups, instead of your Mac, that's not a good idea in general and unlikely to work with a sparse bundle anyway.
I did hear from one developer a couple of years ago, about an app that did the backups separately, but used the same rules, etc., as Time Machine, so the operation was, theoretically, separate.  I can't recall the name now, though.  They had lots of trouble at first, and I haven't heard of them in a while.  I'll post back if the name comes to me.
For secondary backups, whether local or not, it's usually prudent to use a different app entirely;  that way, you're also protected against a failure of either app.
If you have a lot of data, it's probably not worthwhile trying to back up your entire system to the Internet; it would take much too long to download it all.  If your HD failed, you'd have to install OSX first anyway to get connected to the remote location.
EDIT:  By the way, just to reduce misunderstandings, a Time Capsule is Apple hardware combining a wireless router and HD; Time Machine is the software that does the backups, to a Time Capsule, internal or external HD, shared drive on another Mac, Mac Server, or (sometimes) a NAS.
