Backup stops burning

Having been unable to use file sharing to move my iTunes library from an old PC (XP Home Edition), to my new iMac, I resorted to making backup data disks. Tried first with DVD record drive. Although iTunes recognized the drive when I chose it, it will not write to it. (Will start initializing a DVD-R disk, then eject it and ask me to please insert a blank disk. Tried other fresh disks to no avail.) Drive works otherwise and still burns DVDs OK.
Switched to the Dell's other drive to try burning to CDs. Process works smoothly until I get to the fifth or sixth disk (16 are need for entire library), whereupon the drive stops burning and begins ejecting every disk I insert, telling me to "please insert blank disk."
I cannot figure out why this happens, but I'm starting to believe that the PC somehow senses it's being replaced and is making a desperate bid for survival.
My iPod's set up for Mac, so I can't use that. I'm wondering if I shouldn't just burn as many disks as I can, delete what's been backed up, and try burning what's left, five disks at a time.

Meanwhile, I solved the Problem by uninstalling the following components about "System" / "Software" / "uninstall" in the given order:
itunes
QuickTimes
Apple Software Update
AppleMobileDeviceSupport
Bonjour
Apple Application Support
Then I restarted Windows.
Next Step was downloading itunes and installing iTunes again.
Then I connected my iphone  (3GS) and backup started.
The hint came from the german c't - Magazin, No. 19, 2011 page 162.
p.s.: this solved the problem AppleMobiledevicesupport.exe needing permanently about 50% CPU-Usage, too.

You didn't have enough battery power left when performing the update, and it died? That's bad.
You should be able to reinstall OS X using OS X Recovery or in the case of an older MacBook Air running Snow Leopard, by using your original System Install DVD and Remote Install OS X from another Mac.

  • Backup stopped before completing. The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process

I am working with a client who is attempting to backup to a NAS device
The device is a linksys NSS6000 (Cisco device).
It’s a dual 1Gbit LAN device that supports CIFS / FTP and NFS transfers. It has only 1Gbit lan connected.
The device has 4 *  500 gb sata drives in raid 1  attached.
Cables go from cat 5 to fiber back to cat5. (The NAS  is located at a neighboring office) The switches are 1gbit.
Server is a win2k8r1 fully up to date.
When backing up to the NAS device, the following error occurs:
Running backup of volume Local Disk(D:), copied (86%).
Running backup of volume Local Disk(D:), copied (90%).
Running backup of volume Local Disk(D:), copied (94%).
Running backup of volume Local Disk(D:), copied (98%).
Backup of volume Local Disk(D:) completed successfully.
    Backup stopped before completing.
    Summary of backup:
    Backup stopped before completing.
The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.
If we redirect the backup to a folder on a 2008 share, the backup completes successfully.
Only when backing up to the linksys NSS6000 does the error occur.
No other backup processes are writing to the NAS device so I can't understand why the process thinks the file is
    being used by another process.
One thing we did notice that when the backup to the NAS device occurs, throughput is about 150 mbit average
On the 2008 server shares we successfully backup to, the through put is 500 mbit.  Not sure if that is important, but
    might be worth mentioning.
The following event log entry was noted at the end of the backup.

Event store UUIDs don't match  naming your internal HD or any other drive/partition being backed-up.  Time Machine can't be sure the OSX internal log of file changes that it normally uses is correct.
This happens in the following circumstances:
•The first backup of a disk, or to a new location
•After booting from your install disc, Recovery HD, or a different OSX volume (usually)
    •A full restore
•Certain hardware repairs (e.g., new internal disk or logic board)
    •Removal of large exclusions
•A very large volume of changes (especially an OSX update)
•An improper shutdown of your Mac, or improper disconnection or power loss on the Time Machine drive
•If it's an external HD, an improper shutdown or disconnection of the drive
    •A failed or cancelled backup
    •Many days without a backup
It usually causes a lengthy deep scan/traversal (below), so if you see it frequently, you need to figure out why it's happening.

  • Drive Stopped Burning Audio Discs

My Disc drive (G5 3 years old) seems to have stopped burning Audio discs using Toast. It seems to be doing data discs ok, but it appears domestic and computer players will now no longer accept my audio discs (Even both my Macs). Its always worked fine in the past and nothing has really changed to my system. Is this the sign of an ageing drive and do I therefore need a replacement? Is there anything I can do? I have tried burning different speed settings.
    Thanks folks

If the G5 is also having trouble reading the discs it sounds as if the drive is producing really bad burns. Having either the cd or dvd side of things stop working properly is a classic sign of a drive on its way out. The drive begins to produce burns with much higher error rates, and more serious kinds of errors, than usual. All drives produce errors with each burn, but it's the kind of error and intensity of the error that matters. Drives have built in error correction circuitry that can handle the most common error type as long as they are below a certain level. Older drives often begin to either produce much higher error rates that the reading drive can't compensate for, or produce a non-correctible type of error. To make matters worse, the number of errors depends not only on the drive, but the relationship between the drive and disc being used. Each drive has firmware written to tell the drive how to write to different brands of media. Apple rarely updates the firmware on their drives, so after a few years the drive has to guess the writing strategy for each disc and this too can lead to high error rates. And to confuse things even further, companies that sell discs rarely make them, but buy them from oem manufacturers. So one batch of say TKDs may be Optidisc and another CMC and you have no way of knowing by just looking at the disc- you are thinking you are using the same discs but aren't.
So one or more of these factors is giving you burns so bad that the drive the disc was burned on is having trouble reading it, and that's a very bad sign. I would suggest from my experience with many drives that a drive behaving as yours is - one that is 3 years old - should be replaced. A new drive will only run you about $40, it will have new firmware allowing it to work with current discs, and should be faster also.
If you have access to a pc there are actually a number of programs that will allow you to test the discs and see what type and how many errors the burn has produced (I find this one of the few redeeming values of PC's). These programs are invaluable in situations like yours, and as I said, from my experience, the programs usually indicate with your symptoms very high error levels or errors that cannot be corrected.

  • Replacement MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-875 drive stopped burning cd's

My replacement MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-875 drive has stopped burning cd's in iTunes 10.  The error msg is: "The attempt to burn a disc failed.  The disc drive didn't respond properly and can't recover or retry".  When attempting to burn files from the finder I got the msg:  "The disc can't be burned, because the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media."
Is there any hope for this drive? It hasn't been used very much.

    ust a note of interest.
You don't mention the brand of CD and DVD's you use.
Remember there is a huge difference in the Media you buy and choose.
There is also a big difference in the Software you use to burn with.
There are several schools of thought on th entire subject of burning period.
Apple burners are historiclly very picky, and do not like CHEAP Media.
Here is a good guide to use, it is for DVD but I would use like brands with CD's

As I mentioned above the software you use can and does have an affect on your success.

  • The Finder cannot complete the operation?  Backup stops midway

Very often in OSX when I'm copying a disk or large number of files (backing up) I get this message:
"The Finder cannot complete the operation because (x) could not be read or written. (Error code -36)"
When I hit OK, the backup stops at that point.
I'll delete the offending file and sometimes that works, but many times the same thing will happen with a different file again.
Why is this happening and what can I do to stop it?

a great response. I've been having the same problem . Using copy for Backup because it seemed easier than learning a backup program, and hard disks are so big, now. The bigger question is what to do about broken files. In my case, I think the problem was interaction between OS 10.4.11 and Itunes 6.0.1 which I hadn't upgraded to 6.0.5, and that's all my hardware can do. I've rolled back to 10.4.10, and reinstalled Ipod software and Itunes 6.0.5 -not sure if the problem is solved. Wanted to backup 1st before a major test.
But adding podcasts to Ipod leads to hang up, force quit, hang up, turn off power. *So what to do about files that stop copy* (especially when they seem to be hidden, (aside from using Carbon Copy Cloner)
    i.e. spotlight can't find them (i.e. 0F54AE5Dd01),
or old versions don't seem to help (Abstract.dplmageCache).
are they a problem? I've deleted some, but this abstract file seems to freeze shutdown when it's not there. and I can't delete what I can't find.

  • Restore from iphone4 itunes backup stops after upgrade to ios6. does it have to do with my computer settings as it starts hanging and cannot connect to the internet anymore either till I restart.

I have the latest version of iTunes and the iOS6 installed on my iPhone4. The restore from my iTunes backup stops at the end of the recovery process though. Do I need to change anything in my computer settings to let it totally finish?

  • Time Machine Backup Stops Unexpectedly

My Time Machine backup has worked pretty much without a glitch for years, but two days ago it stopped working.  About the time it stopped working, I was burning a number of discs with iDVD.  Some of the burns were not successful and required that I reboot the computer (iMac updated to 10.8.3 this morning) in order to get the disc to eject.
When Time Machine starts running it says that there is 62GB of 1TB available on the backup drive and that there is 1.19GB to be backed up.  At some point, the amout of data to be backed up starts increasing and eventually gets to a point where it exceeds the 62GB available.  Then this message appears:  "The backup disk ran out of space unexpectedly. Time Machine will try to make more space available by removing expired backups during the next scheduled backup."  It looks like the oldest backup is from June, 2010 and I see no problem with deleting these old backups, if necessary.
I suspect that iDVD has created some file somewhere that needs to be deleted, but I don't know where to look.  I have updated my OS and rebooted the computer, but this has not helped.  Does anyone have any ideas?  Thanks!

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.

  • Automatic backups stopped - no errors

Sometime last week, I noticed that Time Machine was no longer backing up on a schedule. It works if I manually initiate the backup, but if I leave it alone, the set time will pass and nothing will happen.
I get no errors. It just never happens.
    I verified:
    1. Time Machine is enabled.
    2. The interval is set to 3600. Yes, I played with TimeMachineEditor in the past, but I put it back to every hour (by telling TME to use the defaults.)
    3. I looked at the hidden file (.001ff35a7920, in my case) on the drive and verified that it is writeable.
    4. I saw someone else's suggestion about deleting the Spotlight index, and tried that, but no joy.
    5. I've rebooted, to no avail.
About one minute before TM is supposed to do its thing, the external drive will spin up, but then nothing happens. Like I said, there's no errors anywhere. There's not even a record that it tried to backup.
I've left it on since 5:30 this morning, and it still hasn't done anything. the last backup was yesterday at 12:03 pm (which was the last manual backup).
    Help please!
EDIT: I should add that I have verified all the launchd items are there and are loaded.

TM may have been confused by deleting that file. If it thinks certain exclusions have been removed, it has to do a "deep traversal," looking at every file and folder on your system, to figure out what to back up.
There will be some messages in your logs that may explain it. Download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget. It shows the messages from your logs for one TM backup run at a time, in a small window. Navigate to that backup, then copy and post the messages here (be sure to get them all, as sometimes they overflow the small window).

Looking at the backups folder, it finished that first backup at 1:13 am, and then ran another at 5:24 am. I'm not sure why there weren't backups in between.
Could your Mac have been asleep?
    Nope. It was not asleep.
So I woke it up at 10:25 tonight, and it said it would run at 11:24. 11:24 came and went, and nothing happened. And again, there's nothing in the logs. Time Machine Buddy comes up blank as well. Last backup was 5:24am today.

processing the slideshows, it automatically stops the burning and it says "there was an error during movie encording" idk why it always comes out,
what i'm doing wrongor if it just doesnt work anymore :S it also opens a new mini window that says "you have insterted a blank DVD.
Choose an action: (open finder) (open iDVD) (open iTunes) etc" so this tells me it's reading it...
i've picked all the options and it still doesnt work with any of those at this same point. I've also tried changing the preferences, the screen mode,
the video quality, EVERYTHING! nothing works! DX
anyone knows how to fix this?
    it'd be truely appreciated!!!
    Yours Truely, DANIELLA.

So today, I deleted that original file (this gave me the ~18.5 GB free) off my internal HD and tried to burn the project.
So the DV file iMovie is using is on the external again? If so I assume iDVD knows that...
Have you tried making a disk image?
Suggest you create a disc image and then burn the DVD. File/Save As Disc Image...

This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Toast to burn the DVD. Disk Utility to burn the .img file. Usually, you can select a burning speed in Disk Utility.
There are variations to this process based on which OS X you are using...
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (maybe the .img) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. A new window should drop down and your SuperDrive tray will open after clicking the Burn icon. Insert a recordable DVD. (Verbatim DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Select a burn speed. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and did change in Tiger.
Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD Media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)

You could go to the iDVD 5 group and search the group for that error code. There was plenty of those there. Not much here.

  • Why does my dvd stop burning ?

I am trying to create a slide show using I dvd.  I imported my IMOVIE to IDVD and go to burn it.. Then it goes half way through and stops with four minutes remaining and then pops out while it says WRITING LEAD IN.. What am I doing wrong?

    Hi
    A. iDVD cares about duration/time only. This is two parts - Movie time + Menu time. Menu can take 15 minutes or more from total duration. Gbs and Mbs is of no interest at all - I've movies on 500Mb that are to large to fit and on 50Gb that fit's nicely. Only time counts.
    B. Brand of DVD matters - Memorex a known problem maker - I use Verbatim (more organic dye in them)
    C. Type of DVD matters - +/-RW usually fails - I use DVD-R as they play on more even older DVD-Players
    D. Burn Speed - matters - I use x2 or x4 ==> Less Burn Errors - Plays on more Players and better.
    E. Material used matters - What video codec and what audio file format and photo file formats was included in Your product ?
    I use
    • Video - StreamingDV .dv
    • Audio - only .aiff 44.1kHz or 48kHz - NO .mp3 .vma etc
    • Photo - only .jpg - NO .bmp (goes red)

  • Backup stops working, please help

I have an original iPhone (metal Back) and for the past 4 days, my phone will not backup in itunes. I'll get an prompt saying "AppleMobileBackup.exe stopped working. Windows will now closed program" I close out the prompt, and itunes will sync my music like normal but will not backup the phone. I tried uninstalling itunes completely then reinstalling it. I still get the same message when i sync. I also checked my previous backups so that way i can restore, but when i checked, it showed that itunes had no previous backups stored... so i'm really resistant to restore as a new iphone since there isn't a backup to restore to. Any idea as to why im getting this error message. This has never happened before. I have the current 3.1 OS as well as iTunes 9.0.1 What should i do???

    Hi
What follows is a fix that should get your 2g iphone back up and running.
    Prep:
Iphone os 3.1 updated downloaded and saved somewhere on your mac or pc where it can found without much effort.
    Iphone 2g 3g 3gs
    Itunes 9
    Sync cables.
1: Start up Itunes and making sure iphone is powered on and in restore mode plug it into computer.
2:At the same time press and hold both the power and home keys and continue to hold them until the phone powers off (about 10 seconds). Once the iphone powers off release the power key but continue to hold the home key for another 15-30 seconds or until it is recognized by itunes. At this point the screen on the iphone should be black but you will see an indicator pop up in Itunes stating iphone detected in restore mode.
3:Click continue or okay and once you get to the restore screen hold shift or ctrl options key and click restore. It will open a file browser window. Navigate to the folder holding the 3.1 updated and select it and hit ok.
4: now your iphone should begin the update process its screen should turn white and then to the apple logo with the loading bar.
This process works by placing the iphone-itouch in dfu mode to do a restore.
If this does not work for you or if you cant get it into dfu you mode google iphone dfu mode and you should find a walkthru.
    Hope this helps!!
