Backup strategy - how to user the vault?

Hi there,
Like everyone else, I also accumulated thousands of images with aperture. So my question is this: How can I backup my entire projects/images (both metadata and master)?
I just bought a new external harddrive 500GB and would like to have the backeup vault there.
Also, I wonder, in case of crush, how can I import the data?
THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Only you can answer this. If you read the options in the import dialog, it will specify exactly where the files are going. You will have 2 or 3 options:
* Import the photos into the Aperture library (this is "managed")
* Copy the photos to a new location and import (you need to specify where this is -- it will default to the last location)
* Import the photos in their current location (this is only an option if you are importing from disk... if you are importing from camera or from a card reader, this is not an option).
Have a good hard look and examine what's actually going on, as you're missing something.

  • 160 GB to backup approx how large should the backup made by TM be?

Just completed my first TM backup. 160GB took up about 19GB in backup space. Does this make sense? Did it get everything? This is my first Mac. Loving it! I remember back when making a zip file on a PC was a big deal, so I'd like to make sure that I actually have a complete backup and that the file sizes make sense.

Hmm, no. It should be about the same - usually a little bigger including overhead. How are you determining the size of the backup? Is this a drive dedicated to Time Machine, or is there other stuff on the drive? If you go into Time Machine preferences, under Options, are there any excluded locations?

  • Large Aperture file backup strategy

    Hi All,
I my Aperture library is just a little north of 800GB in size on a 1TB LaCie FW 800 HD (primary).  My previous backup strategy was to copy the library via a spare Mac Server  via 1 GB ethernet to a 36TB Isilon NAS and then copy this back to an identical 1 TB LaCie (backup).  This gave me three backups in three locations.
This worked fine and only took about 4 to 5 hours to backup the primary disk to the Isilon and I didn't care how long it took to make the LaCie backup.
Once I hit 800 GB the time to backup the drive to the Isilon started to get in the range of 12 to 14 hours with more than a 1/2 million files being copied.
Obviously this isn't working from an efficiency standpoint and I need to come up with a better backup plan one thats reasonably easy to use and faster to get done without sacrificing security of multiple backups in multiple locations.
    Thanks
    Mike

First, make and confirm two back-ups of your Library and of any Referenced Masters.  Your originals and each of your back-up sets should be on separate spindles.  Move one of the back-up sets off-site.  End of terror: it is now virtually impossible to lose any work you've done up to the point you made the back-ups.
A good set-up to end up with is this:
    - Library on SSD
    - Masters older than 60 days on external FW800 drive (these will be Referenced Masters; let's call this drive your Referenced Masters Drive).
    - - - These constitute a complete Aperture "set".
    - Back-up Library _and_ Referenced Masters to _another_ external drive (1st Back-up Set)
    - Back-up Library _and_ Referenced Masters to a third external drive (2nd Back-up Set)
    - Keep one Back-up Set off-site.  Never have all three Sets in the same location.
    - Import new files into Library as Managed Masters.  Set Previews to be the size of your laptop screen.
    - Every 60 days, using a Smart Folder to identify Images with Managed Masters older than 60 days, relocate those Managed Masters to your Referenced Masters external drive
    - Back-up regularly
The above is just a template:  adjust to suit.  (Added:) How you get there will depend on where you are.  I didn't untangle your post.
When Images' Masters are off-line (you laptop is not connected to your Referenced Masters drive), you will be able to do all metadata administration, including moving Images, etc.  You will not be able to make Adjustments, Export, or Print.  (But you can drag the Preview out of Aperture and use it.)

  • Backup strategy when library starts getting LARGE

I have been using Vaults with my (managed) library, backing up to external 80GB firewire drives. My library is now approaching 75GB and will soon exceed the capacity of these little drives.
What are some solutions people implement for backup up large libraries using vaults? My main concern is to always have an off-site backup (ideally two)

I have two External 400 GB drives in an external SATA case, RAID 1 (mirrored with OS X software RAID). I also have a third 400GB drive that I swap out with one of those two drives every week or so, and keep offsite.
The mirrored RAID provides for instant backup in terms of data recovery if a drive fails. The third drives provides for true backup in case I get really clumsy with delete or a cat runs across my keyboard, forever removing inumerable files in the process (pretty hard to do, but you never know when you might make a change you can't recover from).
I do not use Vaults at all; they are a good idea but I think beyond a certain size mirrored drives are more instant a backup and a little easier to manage and even recover from (no library rebuild if you just have an exact duplicate of your library there). They are more complex to set up though so for a lot of users the Vault makes much more sense.
Looking forward all that may change with Time Machine - I think what will happen is that the next major version of Aperture will replace the concept of the Vault with some kind of Time Machine integration. This would give you the instant backup of changes that I like about mirrored RAID, while also allowing you to skim back through the history of adjustments in any version, something you cannot do today. I think then what I would do is have a primary drive for the Aperture library, a larger secondary drive for Time Machine (it needs to be larger to hold data and revisions), and a third drive in another external enclosure that I hooked up once a week and do an clone of the Time Machine drive with (using SuperDuper).
I actually have a second 300GB mirrored RAID set that acts more as offline storage but I didn't want to confuse things bringing that up.

I wonder how pro photographers use aperture?I shoot raw and my harddrive is alreay full.I'm not able to import new pictures. I don't know what to do. I created a vault. My plan was to create a vault(put all my master files into an external harddrive) and then delete all my projects in my mac pro's harddrive. Is it the correct way to do it ? What should I do if I have thousands of raw files ? How should my workflow be? Can I use an external HD and use aperture through the vault, without keeping the master files on my computer's hard drive?? Or should I shoot raw+jpeg and store raw files in an external backup harddrive and import only jpegs into my aperture library?

There's a bit to learn.  It will slowly make sense.
Aperture is an empty field.  You're given a tractor and a whole bunch of attachments. What you grow, how, and where, is entirely up to you.
Vaults are for back-up and only for back-up.  They have nothing to do with storing your working files.
When your Library outgrows your system drive (and for good performance, you should leave c. 20% of every drive empty), it's time to convert some of your image's Masters from Managed to Referenced.  ("Managed" and "Referenced" refer to Masters, not to Libraries.)
There are hundreds of posts in the forum, and several pages in the User Manual on using Masters.
Many people run Aperture with the Library on their system disk, and most (or all) of their images' Masters on external FW drives.  This is a good set-up.  Note that you will likely have to take steps to back-up the data on your external drives.
If you do the above, there should be no reason to delete any Projects.
The choice of RAW or RAW+JPEG or JPEG depends on the kind of work you are doing.  I capture RAW only -- but I don't do any commercial shoots.  Pros on deadlines report that the RAW+JPEG works well for them.  Capture JPEG if it saves you time.  IMHO, there is not a good reason to shoot JPEG to save space (space is cheap; time expensive).
Short-term solution: buy and use a FW800 external 1 TB drive, formatted "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)", and using Aperture relocate the Masters of all images older than 30 days to that drive.  (Be sure to change your back-up strategy to include this new drive; you may need a second new drive.)
This general post of mine might help you understand more about Aperture.

  • I want to set up my time capsule on a completely new network & location without losing the old backups. How do I do this?

I want to set up my time capsule on a completely new network & location without losing the old backups. How do I do this? I cannot find anything in the user manual.

The TC is very hard to just move.. it retains too much of the old network setup.. buried deep in the bowels of the firmware configuration files.. or even on the hard disk special partitions used by the TC.. invisible to you btw.. !!
Do a factory reset and setup from scratch.
That factory reset will have no affect on your backups.. even if you rename the TC.. not a bad things since you also want clients to respond to the new network.. simply reset TM to the new TC name and location.
    See A4 here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
    Factory reset.
    The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
    Factory reset Gen 5
Hold in reset for about 5sec until the status light flashes quickly.
If your AirPort Time Capsule still doesn’t respond, do a similar reset to the Gen1-4.
Unplug your AirPort Time Capsule .. hold in reset and power the TC back on.. without releasing the reset.. wait until status led flashes rapidly.

How to recover the Safari 5.1.7 autocomplete data from a Time Machine backup on Mac OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard)?

    HD/Users/~/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
    HD/Users/~/Library/Safari/Form Values
    HD/Users/~/Library/Safari/History.plist
but other autocomplete data is missing, including the one when filling web form search fields in web pages, for instance, and also some username and password login data on some web sites.
How to restore all such data from the Time Machine Backup?
    Thanks!

    I also recovered:

  • How to backup files from other user logged in as administrator

RE: How to backup files from other user logged in as administrator AND/OR how to repair drive with "Invalid catalog PEOF"
    Hello,
My MacBook Pro computer’s hard drive is not booting.
I booted with the base operating system and ran Disk utilities and I got the following messages:
        Invalid catalog PEOF
The volume could not be verified completely.
This disk needs to be repaired.
Disk utility can’t repair this disk. Backup as many files as possible, reformat the disk,
        and restore your backed-up files.
The problem is that I have a couple of USERS set up on this computer, and it won’t let me backup the files of the second user.  The folders are locked and I can’t access them, even though I am logged in as the administrator.
I made a boot disk on my other computer ( a MacPro Early 2008 ) desktop computer with the DiskWarrior 4.4 updater,
but it won’t boot on my MacBook Pro.
How can I backup these user files so that I can copy them back once I fix the drive?
or better yet,  How can I repair the Invalid catalog PEOF on this drive?
Thank you in advance for your time!

Try using Disk Utility/Restore to copy the backup to a new location. Please note that this will reformat the destination partition which will erase all data.
Do a backup. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors.  Reformat the drive using Disk Utility/Erase Mac OS Extended (Journaled), then click the Option button and select GUID.
