Backup (sync) - update purchased items- transfer?
As are many, I am frustrated with backing-up/syncing my iPad to my iMac and want to start over.
My preference is for my iPad to be synced, as I have it setup, to my iMac.
And to, occasionally, transfer some items on my iMac (like a movie) to my iPad.
This does not seem to be possible.
Ill-informed (or misunderstood) dialogue box choices can easily result in unintended consequences.
My solution (brilliant or not) ~ a New User account on my MBP 2011 just for my iPad syncs/backups.
(FYI: an Apple Store employee told me sync/backup was the same. I'm not convinced that is true).
That's done.
A Dialogue Update Box pops up:
"There are purchased items on the iPad that have not been transfered to your iTunes library.
"You should transfer these items to your iPad Library before updating this iPad.
"Are you sure you want to continue?" (No, I am not sure about anything now).
Is 'transfer' another word for sync/backup?
If so, well why not say so..... rhetorical...
What is recommended?
Update first?
Sync first? then update?
Also, if I manually check "Sync Apps" there is another Dialogue Box:
"Are you sure you want to sync apps? (well duh...)
"All existing apps and their data on the iPad will be replaced with apps from this users iTunes Library."
(Ouch?!!) There is nothing in this New User iTunes Library.
Now What?
Does this mean the Apps I do have on my iPad will disappear during sync and be replaced by nothing?
I get a similar Dialog Box on my iMac if I try to add a movie to my iPad.
"Are you sure you want to sync movies?" (Yes, but not so sure when asked that way)
"All existing songs, movies, and TV shows on the iPad will be removed and replaced with movies from your iTunes library."
All my songs and TV shows replaced with movies? Meaning, no more songs or TV shows- just movies?? That's the trade-off!
As you may guess, no movies are on my iPad to this day.
Can anything be as frustrating as this situation? ..... rhetorical...
Great hardware ~ but the software is getting a bit (no- VERY) skewed.
As it is, this situation cannot be eschewed in lieu of the hardware.
Any help, or a rope, is appreciated (just kidding about the rope).
On my iPad I have 67 books, 382 apps and 20 Videos and 1,651 Photos (FYI: some photos are triplicated on my iPad but in my iMac's iPhoto library).
Answers do not get any better than this. Thanks kostby.
This addition includes background information I'm 'sneaking' into this discussion. It's related to the backup/sync/transfer problem that I'd like to fix/repair on my iPad and to a desire to understand how these b-s-t processes either work or can be cobbled together to create 'as much as possible' the results I (and others) may want.
With more input, perhaps we can come up with 'clear' useable techniques, workarounds, and options that will benefit all of us who are frustrated with trying to figure out how these 'features' can be used to suit our individual needs.
But as they say, "fix your own house first."
Today, however, my schedule does not allow me enough time to parse through your thorough explanations and adjust some of the nuances to fit my original situation, figuring out where I might need more input.
I'll do that later this evening or morning.
As it is, I really appreciate finally having, in one place, information about the differences between B - S - T functions and an idea about the advantages and consequences to using each.
An aside:
Truly, I'd love to know where in the iPad User Guides (or 3rd party ones -useful links are welcomed) that this stuff is clarified, e.g. experiences like the Store above being more common.
If indeed some exist I'll gladly "eat my rope!"
You recommended the Sisal one, right?
Again, this is great stuff and very much appreciated.

~~~~~~~~~~ an additional layer of need~~~~~~~~
iPad - me a frustrated 'so called' semi-expert
iPad 2 - mom ~less than beginner, "I hate computers" type.
Totally different App and Music interests (of course).
Distance apart: 560 miles for the foreseeable future
No way to backup/sync/ etc. her iPad 2 - not a real problem.
A need to simplify her future needs, moving beyond the initial botched setup.
I'd been buying apps of interest, as you did, knowing they would eventually be for mom's iPad 2.
Before trotting over to the Apple Store, I'd 'backed' up my iPad to a User Account for her on my MBP (if there was a difference between sync- backup, this choice seemed to be smarter and thankfully it was).
With my MBP & iPad at hand I used the Store option because I expected an expert would correctly help sort out my needs for my mother's iPad. I'm not sure what they did.
I named her iPad 2 with her name at the store.
My goal was to use my Apple ID to pay for any apps she wanted on hers. (I assumed this would be as if I owned 2 iPads~~ and if she does not learn how to use hers, I may!). Perhaps, this arrangement is one many parents might want to do, if they knew how.
There were no apps on her iPad 2 when I returned home. OK, sorta expected that and certainly did not want to spend the time deleting most of my Apps from her iPad.
FYI: I was not aware of the new iTunes 'Purchased' feature as I hadn't installed those updates on my stuff yet.
I manually 'installed' some of the apps (free and purchased) I'd picked out for her.
FYI: it was upsetting that after adding iBooks that "Winnie the Pooh" was no longer free. Perhaps the 'purchased folder' is a workaround for that or Apple will be generous and make it available for all again.
FYI- a small portion of my photos were on her iPad. I think they were some free wallpaper ones. When I download some WP apps to her iPad 2, the test documents I'd made showed up. All very interesting, part of the backup system I suppose.
As far as iTunes music: Later I will import her CD's to her MBP User's iTunes library, meanwhile I will purchase any new songs she wants to add to her iPad 2.
Thankfully she will only have a few dozen of the hundreds of Apps I've installed on my iPad.
All this effort seemed to be the simplest solution for her and I. And may yet still be so.
In any case, the whole process is more complicated than it should be and will require diligence to maintain and sort out properly, if indeed it can be.
But, as I know, I've got to "fix my own house first."
~~later~~
and thanks so much for your time helping us all out
Hi ,
I would like to ask you about purchase item transfer to ipad from mac book Itunes, But This message will be notified on screen
"This ipad could not be synced because this computer is no longer authorized with that purchased item on this ipad"
I did authorized in the store, but still did not transfer to the mac. Could you please to tell me what should I do it? Please let me know that as soon as possible.
Regards,
Thank youThe iPad is fine. But the computer you're syncing with needs to be authorised with the Apple ID that was used to buy the material on the iPad. You do this by picking the 'Authorize' item from the menu in iTunes and entering the account name and password.
Cannot Sync iPad Purchased Items b/c not Authorized but it is
After updating to iOS 5 on my iPad 2, updating my i7 iMac to the latest OS version (and a recent re-install of Lion b/c of an unrelated problem during a firmware update) and iTunes version I get an error that states:
"Some of the purchased items on the iPad "my name", including "AirPort", could not be transferred to your iTunes library because you are not authorized for them on this computer."
It goes on to list 8 other purchased apps that I cannot transfer/sync --> "TWCable TV", "Trailers", "Teavana", "TBS", "Pages", "Mac|Life", "Cut the Rope", "Civ Rev".
This computer is authorized! I deauthorized all computers and then re-authorized this computer. It is currently the only "authorized computer". Still, I am unable to sync. This is frustrating.
I haven't experienced this problem with either my wifes iPhone 4 or mine.
Thanks for any advice.
iMac - 27" - 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7; 8 GB RAM; OS 10.7.2
iTunes 10.5
iPad 2 w/ iOS 5Based on some helpful information that was recently posted on another discussion, I found a solution.
I have my iMac authorized under my Apple ID user name.
I then repeated the process and authorized it under my me.com user name as well. It now claims that I have 2 computers authorized, but it backed up the purchased Apps. I am unsure why, but this seemed to work.
What I don't know at this time is whether authorizing under the me.com user name will alter anything else withint my iTunes.
Itunes library sync problems. Purchased items only music that syncs.
Itunes library problems syncing. Purchased items from apple all syncing. Progressively losing ability to listen to my CD's I've loaded myself. ie: library music or store bought CD's. Some albums unplayable and some albums only a few songs playable. It's almost as if apple has decided that if I don't buy from them I won't be able to play it. New problem this week only. Cant fix despite frequent attempts to sync ipod. Library seems to be freezing or something at stage 7/7 of syncing items in library.
what computer are you using? if it a windows computer make sure you update your itunes version to 11.1.2
are you able to play the songs from your computer?
try this go to edti> preference> devices > at the bottom click the reset sync histore and choose ok close itunes pull up a new one and try if it work
Good morning
I am trying to upgrade my iPhone via my macbook but the following message keeps coming up and the download does not work
"There are purchased items on the iPhone “Mark Price’s iPhone” that have not been transferred to your iTunes library. You should transfer these items to your iTunes library before updating this"
Please advise how I can transfer these files, I am not sure what files are in question.
I've only had the MacBook a couple of days, I am PC savvy but this is all new to me so please keep it as simple as possible. I am a brit based in Bahrain.
Regards
Mark Priceokay I've done everything regarding the transfer process (via file>transfer purchases) and syncing, so everything on my iPhone device seems to have been transferred to my iMac... however, I still get that message ("There are purchased items on the iPhone..."), trying to upgrade the iOS Have tried several times the same process of hitting transfer purchases via file, but nothing seems to make that message go away! Would have been nice to know which files I actually do need to transfer, which I don't get any info on of course...
Starting to get really annoying this thing.. Any smart suggestions what's going on? -
How do I find all the purchased items on my iPhone? When I try to update the iPhone iOS while connected to my MacBook it says there are purchased items on the phone that have not been transferred to my iTunes library and that I should transfer them before updating.
Thanks. This seems to have worked easily.
I think I have transferred all purchased items but I keep getting the same message and I am afraid that i will lose all my purchases when i update it if I choose to continue.
With the device connected, select File > Transfer purchases.
If there is content from multiple Apple IDs on the device, each Apple ID must be authorized on the computer. -
Warning message says :
There are purchased items on the iPad "Joce's iPad" that have not been transferred to your iTunes library. You should transfer these items to your iTunes library before updating this iPad. Are you sure you want to continue?
Since I don't want her stuff on my pc, is there a way to update and not loose anything on the iPad?
Hello m2205
Check out the article below to troubleshoot your authorization issue within iTunes, you may need to remove the SC Info folder.
When I am trying to upgrade my iphone to IOS7.0.2 by connecting my my iphone and macbook, it shows "There are purchased items on the iPhone “asingh’s iPhone” that have not been transferred to your iTunes library. You should transfer these items to your iTunes library before updating this iPhone. Are you sure you want to continue? ". I hit the same issue and lost a lot of apps from my iphone. Can someone help on how to resolve this issue? I can automatically upgrade my software on the iphone but how shall I resolve any future updates of "Apps"?
I appreciate the answer, but what you describe is not entirely accurate. First, to even see view, you have to enable the menu by clicking on the icon in the upper left. View allows you to show the sidebar.
Second, you will NOT see your devise listed in sidebar or anywhere else. Instead, you have to click on "devise" from the sidebar menu, wait a minute, and then it will finally show up under "devise." Or maybe it just takes a minute to show up whatever you do.
Third, right clicking on your devise will take you to a menu with "transfer my files" on it, but then iTunes will refuse to make the transfer. Instead, it will tell you that <your apps> on your <devise> could not be transferred to iTunes "because you are not authorized for it on your computer." Apple unhelpfully suggests going to store> authorize this computer. There is a "store" menu item on the sidebar, but it has no "authorize this computer" sub-menu. Instead, go to the horizontal menu at the upper left, and THERE you will find "store" and the "authorize this computer" sub-menu. Now you can transfer your files, to who knows where.
My iPhone 5 is my first Apple devise. So far my experience has been, to do A, which must be done right now, you must first do B. To do B you must first do C, which is unexplained save in answers in user forums. To do C you must first do D, which, after several hours of research and puzzle solving, can eventually be done. -
When trying to transfer my purchases on my phone to my computer, I went to file>devices>transfer purchases, and said I have done so. But if I try to update my iphone a box pops up and says I should still transfer my purchased items first. But I already have, am I doing something wrong?
No, just a reminder that you should do so beforehand, which you have already done.
want to update iPad 2 to ios6. I am warned by itunes not to do the update until I transfer purchased items (books) to my computer. When I try to transfer into itunes I am warned that I will lose all the books I have on iPad.....there's lots of them.
To transfer the books, highlight the iPad in the iTunes Devices list and right click on the iPad's name. Choose transfer purchases.
