Backup then Restore problem

Yesterday, I had a problem with my iPad 3, iOS 6 which forced me to do a backup and then a restore. I backed up to my Mac via iTunes. The restore worked fine all my settings were the same EXCEPT all my installed apps were missing. Is this normal or did I screw-up the backup?  Thank you.

Really? This was the first time I've ever needed to do a restore so it is possible that I did not allow enough time. The iPad stated a Restore was in Progress. Then after a while I looked again at the iPad, it seemed to be turned off. On my Mac, iTunes showed no message like the restore was complete, nor did it show any message that the restore was still in progress. Therefore, I thought it was complete so I turned on my iPad and logged in.

  • 2008 MB with APM (not GUID), Clean install or Backup then restore?

I have a mid-2008 Macbook that has the Apple Partition Map as it's primary partition. It appears as tho when I did a disk upgrade a few months back for some reason it got switched from GPT to APM. Not sure how, but that's a different topic. Since SL will not install over APM, I must go through a disk partition effort.
So, I'm fairly new to Macs but as far as I can tell my options are:
    1. Backup disk (Time Machine), repartition, reinstall from scratch (same as 1), then restore from backup.
    2. Clone disk to another same size disk, repartition original disk using GPT, then clone back to original disk, then install Snow Leopard.
Which one should I go with? Frankly, I'd prefer NOT to have to reinstall everything, is #2 it even feasable? If I restore from backup (time machine) is my computer restored back to its original state? all apps, bookmarks, etc?? A time consuming process is not what I'm looking for, so getting the system up and running ASAP is what I'm all about. I have a spare 500gb USB drive for backup I can use.
Since I'm not a mac guy by nature any guidance is appreciated.

    netslacker2000,
Ah, but you didn't mention the fact that cloning was involved. Details are important! Yes, what you are describing is possible, and is in fact the method that must be used to create a "dual boot" external drive that will boot both an Intel machine and a PPC one.
But, let's clarify something right off the bat, so that there is no longer any confusion... A partition is not and will not have either a GUID format or an APM one. It is the partition mapping scheme that describes the partitions created on a drive, and thus it is a lower level aspect of the data written to a drive. The only exception to this is a rare one; it is the case that you find yourself facing right now. I'll try to explain as well as I can what is going on.
As I stated above, the mapping scheme- either the GUID scheme or the Apple Partition Mapping scheme (APM)- is the portion of a drive's underlying directory structure that describes what logical volumes exist on that drive. Intel machines can read either, but require a GUID mapping scheme in order to boot to the drive. PPC Macs can read either, but require a drive with the APM scheme.
However, since an Intel Mac is perfectly capable of mounting an APM drive, there is one way to "spoof" that Intel machine by a careful use of cloning. Under normal circumstances, a clone is made by reproducing one volume to another volume, or one drive to another drive. In this case, however, a drive has been cloned to a volume. The result is, in effect, like having a drive within a drive.
A volume cloned in this way will have its own partition map, its own volumes. So, in this way, one can "shoe horn" a GUID partition map- and any volumes that map describes- into a single volume contained on another drive. Is this at least a little clearer than mud?
So what do we do about it? Hmm, should be easy enough to fix. Let's stay away from cloning though, shall we? If I were in your shoes, I would first resort to restoring from Time Machine. I'm not sure how your current predicament may have affect Time machine, and your ability to restore the full system from it, but keep in mind that you can always just start fresh with a clean installation of Snow Leopard, using the Migration Assistant to pull your user data from the TM backup.
    1) Boot to your Leopard install DVD (not the Snow Leopard DVD!). Insert the disk, then restart and hold the "C" key. When the installer loads, select a language, then open Disk Utility from the "Utilities" menu.
    2) In Disk Utility, select your drive in the list on the left (select the drive, not the named volume that will appear indented below). Switch to the "Partition" tab. First, open the pull-down menu and change it from "current" to "Single Partition." Next, click the "Options..." button, and use the dialogue sheet that will appear to select "GIUD." Confirm your choice to dismiss the dialogue, choose "Mac OS Extended (journaled)" as the format for the new volume that will be created, choose an appropriate name for the new volume, then click "Apply." Quit Disk Utility to return to the installer.
    3) Once back in the installer, go back to the "Utilities" menu and choose "Restore from a Time Machine Backup." Connect your TM backup drive, and wait for it to be scanned for backups. Select the backup you wish to use (I would assume the latest one), then wait to select a destination. This can take a couple to a few minutes, since the backup you choose must be "weighed" according to its size, to determine where it can be restored. When you are able, choose your newly created volume as a destination, then click "Restore."
If all goes as it should, you will end up restarting to the restored installation of 10.5. Yes, absolutely everything will be restored (all user data, all applications, etc., etc.). You can then prepare to install Snow Leopard over this restored installation.
You will be anxious, at this point, to get to the installation of Snow Leopard. Do not rush into this!! First, I recommend you allow your computer to completely re-index your hard drive. This is something that is done any time you restore from a TM backup. Watch your Spotlight icon at the right side of your Menu Bar. When it stops "pulsing," the indexing is complete and you may continue with your preparations.
Next, open Disk Utility, select your startup volume (the volume this time, not the drive itself) and click "Repair Disk Permissions." Allow this to complete. It may take quite some time; it usually does after a restore from TM.
You are now ready to install Snow Leopard. Insert the Snow Leopard disk, open it up, and double-click the "Install" icon. Follow the instructions, and you are on your way to a new version of OS X!

  • "Sounds like a bad install. Backup then restore via iTunes. Restoring iOS Software"

Cant back up because the phone turns off so quickly.  Is there any way to reverse the install quickly?

Assuming you have a default itunes installation, that list should keep you covered.
It's got a lot of folder paths for XP, though.Your profile says Win 7 which  uses this folder, for instance in step 11.
    \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
    XP uses the \Documents and Settings\; W7 doesn't.
Here's an apple article on iphone backups:

The main file to backup for ratings, play lists, etc is the ITL file.
Don't forget to deauthorize your PC before you wipe it.

I do not wish to go to ios 7 at this time.

Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
Basic troubleshooting is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.
If the issue continues, contact the carrier to troubleshoot the network connectivity issues.

  • I just had to reformat the external hard drive that houses my iPhoto library, then restore it from a backup. Now Time Machine is telling me my backup hard drive suddenly does not have the space to complete a backup. I also noticed when I go in to Time Mac

I just had to reformat the external hard drive that houses my iPhoto library, then restore it from a backup. Now Time Machine is telling me my backup hard drive suddenly does not have the space to complete a backup. I also noticed when I go in to Time Machine, there are only about 5 backups recorded on the ext. hard drive. There were many more before. Any idea what happened and if I have to buy a new back up hard drive?

    Hallo  Kieth ,
I am not quite ready to restore the full iphoto library , as I have days of work re - imputting titles, descriptions and enhancement . I hope that your suggestion works , as I use my Macbook basically to work with digital photography. Through time , I will need to delete my library to recover more disc space and I would hate to have to spend more time re - imputting titles and descriptions all over again .
Thanks for your interest and advice.

  • My question is about the 'Restore Backup' option on iTunes (Not 'Restore iPhone'). So, if I click on Back Up Now, then 'Restore Backup', would that go through the process of erasing everything on my phone as new then restore whatever iTunes has backed up?

My question is about the 'Restore Backup' option on iTunes (Not 'Restore iPhone'). So, if I click on Back Up Now, then 'Restore Backup', would that go through the process of erasing everything on my phone as new then restore whatever iTunes has backed up?
I do not want this to happen, as with previous experience iTunes doesn't restore a mirror of what the iPhone was when it was backed up as is the case with iCloud backups.
What I am trying to do is, as I've found a method on Youtube, there is an application where I can delete all the multimedia saved in my 'iMessages' so clear up some space. As doing that manually through the phone would take a lifetime. The method is to backup on iTunes, then using the backup created, importing that into the application then deleting the messages through that then restoring the phone using that amended backup.
So back to my question, would restoring through 'Restore Backup' just restore the backup internally or would it flush the entire phone and then restore the backup? And if it does so, what would be lost in the restore?
    Thank you all,
    Fahmid

iCloud should overwrite your phone with the data stored in your account, preserving your newer data.  However, to be sure I would go to Settings>iCloud and turn data syncing to Off before restoring the backup.  Then, after restoring the backup, turn the data syncing back to on, and when prompted about Merging with iCloud, choose Don't Merge.  This will ensure that the data in your iCloud account overwrites the data on your phone (which is your goal).
Also, you don't sync text messages with iCloud so you will end up losing your more recent messages when they are overwritten by the backup.

  • Backup restoring problem

i recently updated my n95 with the v20 update.
before that i backed up my phone data using the content copier from the nokia pc suit.
after the update what ever i try it wont restore my data back to the phone...???? very infurating as you can imagine,
anybody have a solution to this problem
i use the 6.82.22.0 nokia pc suit version....
    cheers

I hope that by now you have that problem solved.
It is in fact infuriating. I've been there...
And that is only one of the vast array of problems Nokia PC software brought me.
However I recently reinstalled Nokia Nseries PC Suite latest version, and just out of curiosity I tried the backup and restore, and bingo, it worked fine.
But as it was too good to be true, the included Nokia Music Manager refuses to run.
Owning a splendid N95 8GB for 6 months now, I learned very early to use a 3rd party PC software...

  • Had 3G, moved to 3GS.  Backed up 3G and restored 3GS from backup with no problem.  When I want to add songs, I get itunes message that the new iphone is synced to another computer and now wants to erase everything.  How can I add music?

Had 3G, moved to 3GS.  Backed up 3G and restored 3GS from backup with no problem on a Dell computer.  But now when I want to add songs, I get itunes message of death that the new iphone is synced to another computer and now wants to erase everything.  How can I add music without erasing everything on my new iphone?

Yes, I was aware of this but the phrase "Any items imported from audio CDs or acquired from other sources will not copy from your device to the iTunes library." is what worries me.  Will this eliminate my Notes, Calendar Events, etc or will it apply mostly just to the music?

  • Can I backup one iPad to another temporarily and then restore them both at a later time?

My older son is autistic and is non-verbal.  He uses his iPad to communicate with people around him.  I need to put his iPad into the shop to get the screen repaired.  I have made backups of both, my iPad and his.  Can I restore my iPad using his backup to make mine look like his, so he can borrow mine while his is in the shop, and then when his is repaired, restore mine to my backup?  Both iPads are iPad 2, and both have the latest IOS.  Both are also 64 GB.
    Thank you for the help.

If you have a computer, yes you can do that. You can't back them up to each other though.
Using a computer (presuming you set it up with one, if you didn't then it gets trickier), back up yours. then go into the settings, reset, erase all content and settings, which puts it back to being straight out of the box. Hook his up, do a full back up. Unplug it. Plug yours back in and set yours up, and when you have the choice to set up as new or restore from backup, choose that and his data will clone onto yours.
Take his in, when you get it back, it should be wiped, restore it from the backup of his and you can then wipe yours and restore yours from the backup
But how are you getting it fixed? If it's going to an apple store and you're getting an out of warranty replacement, you won't need to do that because you'll take it in, pay the fee, walk out with the replacement and you can then restore that one from the backup, so you'd have no need to juggle the data.....unless you're mailing it in and it'll take a few days, etc.

    Hey jtom234412,
Thanks for the question. Based on the information you have provided, it sounds like your device is not detected in iTunes for Windows. The following resource may help resolve this issue:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1538
Furthermore, if your device is in recovery mode (displaying an iTunes symbol, with a plug), see the relevant information under Step 5.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • My problem is that since I update my iphone 4s ios 8 and then restore it and when I connect to itunes does not sync my music only applications

my problem is that since I update my iphone 4s ios 8 and then restore it and when I connect to itunes does not sync my music only applications

I had a similar issue and I was told that my iTunes match was on.
I had to disable iTunes match on my iPhone.
Following which - after you plugged in your iPhone to iTunes, select your iPhone on iTunes menu. You should see a summary page of your iPhone where it provides options to update or restore. On the bottom there should be an option to select "sync only selected music/playlists". I can't remember the exact wording. Once that's been checked, select your iPhone's music tab and it should allow you to select the music playlists you want to sync.
