Can I use an older (flat) Airport Express to attach an ext hard drive and backup time machine wirelessly? and how?

can I then connect a HD with itunes music and photos?
Now we are drifting from the original question.
Im alreadty using the HD attached to my Mac Pro...can I just connect it to the Extreme and access it wirelessly with any device on the wifi net?
You may get another opinion on this from another user, but I do not recommend this either, based on a number of experimens over the years with this.
Access to your data on the drive will be much slower. iTunes will tend to "lose" the library this way and you will have to re-point the iTunes application at the library on a regular basis.
Things are even worse with the iPhoto library. The experts over in the iPhoto support area strongly advise that you do not do this, since any break in communication between the iPhoto application and iPhoto library can easily corrupt the entire library.  A wireless connection makes things even more dicey.
My advice......Use a drive connected to the Extreme for storage or other backup copies of data.....not for "working" files or libraries.
But, you may get some other opinions from users here.

  • I had to reformat my OSX 10.5.8 and i can't restore my emails from my time machine backup from an external hard drive - only the latest (post backup) time machine back ups are available to restore. Please can any help

I had to reformat my OSX 10.5.8 and I can't restore my emails from my time machine backup from an external hard drive - only the latest (post backup) time machine back ups are available to restore. Please can any help? I can find the mail folder in my libraries, but the Restore Button is grayed out

OSX treats the reformatted drive as a different one; it's the same as replacing it, and the old one is no longer connected.
See #E3 in  Time Machine - Troubleshooting to see and restore from the "old" drive.
And, you may not want to restore via the Finder; see the blue box in #15 of  Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.

For the past several days, I have been getting this message during backups:
Time Machine could not complete the back up.  The backup disk image "Volumes/Data/bhoppy2's iMac.sparsebundle" could not be accessed (error-1).  When I click on the 'help' icon on the message, it reverts to a blank page, and I cannot find anything online regarding the term 'sparsebundle.'  In addition, I cannot access previous backups any longer.

i baught Seagate Backup plus 2T hard drive to use as my Backup time machine. But its not working. when i connect to time machine its not coping files, it keep saying preparing files. Can someone help me please...

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Change which old backups Time Machine keeps

Any body know how to change what older backups Time Machine keeps?  I know how to change how frequently Time Machine backs up (sudo defaults write /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.backupd-auto StartInterval -int XXXX),
but what I want is for it to not save so many recent backups and keep more of the old ones.  Right now it saves hourly backups for the last 24 hours, daily for the last month, and weekly for each month until you run out of space.  I don't need all the daily stuff, and would really like to keep more of the monthly.  The older the info, the harder it is to recover by other means.  What I'd like to do is keep older backups and lose more of the intermediate ones.
    Any ideas?

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Post the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — edit that out, too, but don’t remove the context.

  • During backup, time machine quits unexpectedly...

During backup, time machine quits unexpectedly and says the external disk was removed (but it wasn't even bumped). This has happened repeatedly every time I attempt a backup. Any ideas?

There are a few things that might be causing this.
First, open the Energy Saver preference pane in System Preferences and uncheck the box labeled "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible," if it's checked. Some hard drives don't respond well to that setting.
The external drive should be plugged directly into a built-in port, not into a hub. Check that the data cable is securely inserted at both ends. If you're using a 3.5" external drive, it should have its own power supply.
To be on the safe side, launch the Disk Utility application, select the backup volume (not the startup volume), and run "Repair Disk" (not "Repair Permissions.") If any problems are found, you should repeat until the volume is clean. You should also give serious consideration to replacing the drive if that happens, because a volume should never develop directory damage unless there's a hardware fault.

  • External HDD/Backup/Time Machine Questions

Hi gang. Another question for you all...
I have a MacBook Pro as well as .Mac and a 500 GB G Drive external HDD. Normally I've been dragging my iTunes and iPhoto folders over to the G Drive, along with any other documents. And I use Backup (from .Mac) to backup my iWeb websites. That's been fine.
Now I want to get a little more safe and have another backup option/source. So I've been thinking about Time Machine. It seems pretty cool (from the marketing I've read on Apple's website) and I figure two backups are better than 1 (especially when I have a ton of music and photos to backup).
So what are my best options? I budgeted myself at $500 and just bought a G Tech G Raid2 (which is 1 TB Raid 0). I haven't opened it yet. Should I use that with Time Machine, or should I use my 500 GB G Drive with Time Machine and do the "manual backups" (i.e. dragging files over) on the 1 TB? Do I leave the G Raid2 as Raid 0, or can I change it Raid 1? Does Raid mess with Time Machine at all?
Or do I return the G Raid2 and get a 1 TB or 500 GB Time Capsule in two weeks time? I would have to imagine (although it's purely speculation at this point) that the G Raid2 must be better hardware (hard drive wise) than Time Capsule, right?
Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated!
    -Keith
    MBP 15" 2.33 C2D with 10.5.2

You didn't mention anything about having a bootable backup - if not, I'd seriously consider doing that. As for the rest of it, I don't know how much space you need for your music and pics, but whatever your decision will be, I'd partition the external(s) for a bootable backup and another for the tunes and pics plus any other partitions you may want for other files (i.e. I keep copies of all installers on an external; that way, if anything goes wrong, I don't have to download them again). I don't know if Time Machine is capable of creating a bootable backup (I couldn't find any mention of it on the website). I have a bootable Leopard on an external as well as bootable copies of Tiger on externals for both my iMac and MBP and backups of all my important files there and on CD's, so I have not found a need for Time Machine or .Mac at all.
That said, if you need more space, I'd go for another 500 GB or more external if needed; create partitions, make a bootable backup of your entire system, and copy your music and pics to both.
I'm sure you'll get more (and different) suggestions..

  • Time Machine & iTunes Lock Up iMac

I use Time Machine on my iMac (running OS X 10.5.7) and backup files to a 1 TB Time Capsule wirelessly. During hourly backups my system will lock up or "freeze" forcing me to turn off the iMac and turn it back on. This happens almost daily and has been going on for quite some time now. It seems like iTunes could have something to do with this. When the system locks up iTunes is playing music and is always the first program to stop responding. From there, any other open application stops responding until the entire system locks. Is there a known conflict between Time Machine and iTunes? Any ideas?
    Thanks - Jay

There have been reports of issues between Time Machine and iPhoto 8.0, but not iTunes that I am aware of. Try this.
    Reboot, the Mac.
Once you are logged back in initiate a backup without any other applications active. Does is complete successfully?
Now, launch only one of the applications you normally have open when the "freeze" occurs and initiate a backup. Does is complete successfully?
Do this with each app leaving iTunes for last.
When you launch iTunes don't play any music yet, just initiate a backup. Does is complete successfully?
Now play some music and initiate a backup. Does is complete successfully?
Also, are you playing the music only on the Mac, or are you streaming it to another device on your network?
By process of elimination you may be able to narrow down the conflict. Cheers!

If I used external hard disk for back up time machine, is it possible to use that external hard disk to save another else from diffrent computers?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can do this, but you should make a new volume on your external disk. Time Machine needs a volume that is only used to store backups, so you can't store other data in the same volume as the one you are using for making backups.
If you want to create another volume on your external disk, use Disk Utility to do this > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU3.html Anyway, you should get another external disk to store other files, but if you don't want to, you can create another volume in it

  • How to backup Time Machine itself, after upgrading to firmware 7.6.1?

I recently updated my Time Capsule to 7.6.1.
The option "Archive" that I used to backup my Time Machine disk to another disk connected via USB disappeared...
How do I do to do it now?
    Thanks

I suggest that you download and install AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion if you need more functionality.
You can keep both AirPort Utility 6.0 and 5.6 on your Mac and use the application that you choose.

  • LOst all my Backups Time Machine

Happy in the knowledge time machine was backing up my macbook.
I did a clean install of snow leopard after verifng disk and permissions and doing a zero erase.
Now can find spare bundle from sept 2010 but cannot mount it, where has all the info from sept-jan gone ?????????????????????

How are you looking for your backups -- are you using +Setup Assistant+ when your Mac first started up after installing OSX?
Or did you set up a user account, and are trying +Migration Assistant?+
    Or something else?
Before you erased, were you able to see the recent backups via the "Star Wars" display?

  • Backup Time Machine Once A Day?

    Hello,
I'm looking for a Time Machine application that will let me backup once for twice a day instead every hour, any ideas?
Thanks for reading my post and your help.

    Is Time machine editor stable?
I don't use it myself, but some do. I have seen a few posts to the effect that if you decide to stop using it, you have to turn it off before deleting the app, otherwise it leaves it's last schedule in effect, and TM doesn't resume it's normal hourly backups. So check whatever instructions or Help there is. Other than that, I've seen no adverse reports.
May I ask why you want to alter the hourly schedule? Depending on how you use your Mac, those incremental backups are usually quite fast and don't interfere with normal activity. On my small (~30 gb) system, just as an example, TM's hourly backups rarely run over 30 seconds, and I usually notice them only if I happen to see the icon spinning.
There are, however, some OSX features and 3rd-party apps that cause large incremental backups, but there are also ways to minimize the effects.

  • Wiederherstellung vom Backup Time Machine

    Hallo @ All,
Was hab ich falsch gemacht??   (typisch Frau)
    Freu mich auf Feedback.
    Vielen dank im voraus

  • Backup Time Machine folders into another External Drive

I wanted to know if its possible to backup five different Mac computers Time Machine folders into one major external harddrive. Right now, each mac computer has a external harddrive for backup using Time Machine. I wanted to Backup each of these external hard drives with Time Machine folder into one major external harddrive. How can I bypass that.

It's possible-just select the desired disk on all the macs.
Unfortunately, you won't be able to continue using the same backups you have now; you'll have to start from scratch on all the computers.
    Good luck!
