Backup.tly in photoshop elements 10? what is it?

What is the backup.tly file for in Photoshop Elements 10? I recently switched to a new computer and tried to resotre (what I thought were) my back up files for photoshop elements, but it did not restore correctly causing me a ton of work. I had been using "backup.tly" to "incremental" backup faithfully about every week for over one year, but when it came time to utilize my back up files (because I switched to a new computer) they wouldn't restore corrctly.

Anatomy of a PSE backup:
- It's a folder with the name of the catalog
- It contains renamed copies of all of your picture files (to avoid problems with duplicates). They are named B000..... plus the original suffix : jpeg, tiff, mov, mp3, xmp... Those files are the backup of your media files -- the catalog itself is a database file : catalog.pse10db, which is copied and renamed catalog.buc in the backup folder.
- It also contains the backup.tly file you have noticed : it's a file containing the cross reference between the real and full path original media file, and the renamed versions in the backup. PSE recognizes this file to undertake the restore process.
What about incremental backups ? They are identical in structure, which means you must create a new folder for each backup, whether full or incremental. How does this work? Practically in the restore process, you point first to the last (most recent) incremental backup (which contains an up to date copy of your present catalog), then you have to follow the on screen instruction to point to each incremental backup folder so that the files are correctly restored.
I suspect your problem is that your incremental backups were not done on a new folder each time.
When you want to move computers, you have to use a full backup.

  • I downloaded photoshop elements, now what?

I downloaded photoshop elements, now what? I can see all the files and whatnot, but now what do I do? Is there other steps to start using the free trial? I'm not that computer savvy, yet if you tell me in plain english I'm sure I can figure it out;)

Which operating system are you using?  I would recommend you begin by launching the setup application to install Photoshop Elements.  You might also find the document Install | Adobe Premiere Elements | Photoshop Elements | Windows | Mac OS helpful.

There is no serial number in my new Photoshop Elements package - what do I do?

The serial number is often on the white liner box inside the printed box, if you got a serial number. But these days you often get a redemption code instead, which you use to get a serial number. The redemption code may be on your receipt:

  • My backup disk of Photoshop elements 11 seems to be empty. I don't know what to do.

I bought photoshop elements 11 and I backed it up on a disk when I got rid of my old computer. But the disk seems to be empty. I made a mistake somewhere. Can I download Photoshop elements 11 ? Now there seems to be only elements 12.

Alternatively you can download the PSE11 trial version from http://prodesigntools.com/photoshop-elements-11-direct-download-links-pse-premiere-pre.htm l
Follow the Very Important Instructions on that page first BEFORE you click the download links.
Install the trial then enter your serial number to license it.

  • How do incremental backups work in Photoshop Elements?

I'm trying to figure out INCREMENTAL backups in Photoshop Elements.  I've performed an INITIAL backup on a Seagate Backup Plus external drive.  Now when I try to perform an INCREMENTAL backup to the same folder, I get this warning:  "! A backup already exists in that folder, do you want to overwrite it?"  When I say no, it won't let me save the INCREMENTAL back up in the same folder.  Is "yes" the correct answer?  If so, please explain how this works.  I want to make sure I don't lose anything in the initial backup.

Once you have a full backup you can make incremental backups in future which will be much quicker.
Don’t use the same folder, make a new one. Once you have a full back up you can make incremental back ups but you need to follow a set routine. It’s not very intuitive.
Start by creating a new folder or label a new CD/DVD Disk - it’s best to use dates e.g. “PSE12 incr backup 2014-June-04”
Press Ctrl+B and check Incremental, then click Next
Highlight your drive containing the last backup and click the bottom Browse button (previous back up file) then navigate to the TLY file and click open.
Click the Browse button above and navigate to your new folder “PSE12 inc backup 2014-June-04”
    Click Done.
If your full backup originally contained 500 images, the incremental backup will only contain changes since the last backup e.g. files B000501.jpg, B000502.jpg etc
If you ever have to do a complete restore you start with the TLY file from the latest incremental backup. The program automatically recognizes the number of incremental steps and you will be prompted to insert a disc or navigate to the appropriate drive/folder.
Incremental backup’s are obviously much quicker to write to disk but I recommend that you periodically perform another full backup and delete any earlier backups.

  • What is the 3rd Disc in Photoshop Elements.  What does it do?

    Hi All.....
I am a neophyte.  Just got the new Elements 10, and am in awe about all it can do.  Have been running the tutorials.   I have 3 discs in my packet.  The first disc which I installed is the Photoshop Elements program.   The second disc which I did not install is a trial of the the Premier version...for movies.   The third disc is the focus of my question.   I have put it into the computer and the dialogue box that opens asks for photo places on the computer.  I have called CS but they tell me the 3rd disc is supposed to be templates for printing.   I have opened the files on the 3rd disc but only see the formulary for the things the program needs in terms of space and speed from the computer to function.
Question:  What is the 3rd disc for and how do I use it?
    Many thanks....

So I installed the 3rd disc (have a mac)...I have disc two in the computer and it does not prompt me to install, it sounded like it installed something though?  I do not see an eject to remove it...
I am gathering from the previous answer, one only needs to install disc 3 for Elements10  Mac usage?

  • I presently have Photoshop Element 6. what is the best to upgrade to?

I presently have Photoshop Element 6. What should I upgrade to and why?

Did you intend to post this in the Photoshop General Discussion forum?
In any case, I use to use Photoshop Elements 9 myself and wanted more than what Elements offered so I ultimately decided on Photoshop CC.
Yes, it's a subscription. It's pretty cheap enough at $10 USD/month via the Creative Cloud Photography Program. You get Lightroom on top of it and any and all updates and new features to both as they're announced.
The alternatives are the latest version of Photoshop Elements (version 13 now, if I recall) and Photoshop CS6. Both are "permanent" licenses; no subscriptions needed. However, in CS6's case, it's permanent in the sense of "no more updates/new features other than critical updates." Take into account CS6's cost and what I just typed.

  • Photoshop Elements Organizer: What is the procedure to follow step by step to split a catalog of 30,000 images in 3 smaller catalogs?

    Photoshop Elements Organizer:
For example : I have pictures taken on 6 continents all stored in the same catalog and I want to create one catalog for each continent (Africa, Asia, etc).
    How to proceed?
    Thanks

Use tags instead of splitting the catalog. There is no built-in procedure to split catalogs.

    Hi,
You can download the trail version of the PSE from Download Photoshop Elements products | 13, 12, 11, 10 and then provide the serial key to get the full version privileges.

  • I have photoshop elements 9. what's the best to move the application to a new PC?

I have photoshop element 9. I will be getting a new PC. Would a software migration tool like Laplink's PC Mover work? Or, is there a better way

I'll be going from Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit to Windows 8,1 if that matters.

I would use the pse 9 installer to install pse 9 on your new computer
If you don't have a dvd or download of pse 9 you can get it from here:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/kb/photoshop-elements-7-8-9-downloads.html
Also, if you don't plan to use pse 9 on your old computer, deactivate it on your old computer before installing on your new computer

  • Saving JPG files in Photoshop Elements 10 - what size?

I have used the raw converter to tweek my photos. I want to save file in Jpg format.
Elements asks me what size I want to save:  Low, Medium, large, or maximum.
    I will use the Jpg files for printing either 4 x 6 or 8 x 10.
What dictates the file size to use?

For printing, you would want maximum quality.

  • Convert Catalog from Adobe Photoshop Album to Photoshop Elements 13

    Hello Community!
I've searched for this question in Google, but I didn't find an answer that helped me.
The old computer from my client with Windows XP OS is getting replaced by a new one with Windows 7.
There was Adobe Photoshop Album on the old one which isn't supported anymore. My client had over 15'000 pictures on his old PC which I've already copied on the new computer. Now he wants his albums, tags and these things from Adobe Photoshop Album back, so I decided to install Photoshop Elements 13 because of the Elements Organizer tool.
Now I've seen answers in forums that sayed that all these informations are saved in the "My Albums.psa" Catalog file, which I've already found on the old computer and copied on the new one. Some people sayed it would work with the "convert" option in PSE, but this doesn't work for me, because PSE doesn't see the .psa file. So I tried to convert my .psa file with this Tool, but in the middle of the progress it says that it failed and that I should try to repair the file in PSE. I'm now stuck here, with several different solutions, and yet I don't know what to do now.
I've read something about the folder structure and that the pictures and folders have to be on the harddisk when trying to convert the .psa file. All pictures are on the new computer, but of course the folders aren't the same on the new OS.
It would be glad if I find a solution as soon as possible from someone in the community.
Thanks and have a nice day!

Finally I could solve the problem.
I tried to import the Backup.tly in Photoshop Elements, but without success. Even there an Error appeared. The conversion tool also still got this failure at a progress of 15% conversion... So I searched a reason for the failure in google and found this helpful article from Adobe. It says that you should look for the corrupt images in the log file. So did I, and I found the error causing picture on the old computer and deleted it. After that I opened Photoshop Album, clicked on "File > Reconnect all missing files" and deleted this picture from the catalog.
Now I didn't want to make the backup again, because the last nearly had 1h. So I decided to try it again by just copying the catalog.psa from the old computer to the new one and to convert it again with the conversion tool. The error came again, but at a progress of 22% So i had to do this a few times: Searching the corrupt image in the log file, deleting it on the old computer, deleting the missing file in Photoshop Album and converting it. And finally, it worked, no error after conversion! I let photoshop elements 13 open the new .pse13 file. Now, all tags and albums were back on Photoshop Elements. Eventually, I let the programm searching the new paths of all the images. It takes a time but it works great now. Thanks for your help, I would recommend the Adobe Community & support!
