Backup to Data Domain

Hey Everyone,
Recently my company purchased a data domain and obviously the plan is to backup oracle to the Data Domain. Has anyone setup an environment like this before, and if so, can I get some direction of how to approach backing up Oracle to a Data Domain. Such as, can i backup directly to a data domain, do i have to go through some software such as ArcServe.......??? Any help will be appreciated...

    Hello,
    No disconnection at all.
It doesn't work since a crash of the DP server during the DB backup.
When we move the catalog on the same server as the DB, the backup works but if we set the catalog to an other server (like the original setting) it doesn't work and we don't know why.
It seems that when a backup is launched thru Data Protector, RMAN can't find the DB catalog. But if we run (manually) the RMAN command that DP used to do a backup, it works...

how to delete multiple data domains with single step ?

You can go to your Endeca-Server domain home e.g.($WEBLOGIC-HOME$/user_projects/domains/endeca_server_domain/EndecaServer/bin)
    run
    [HOST]$ ./endeca-cmd.sh list-dd
    default is enabled.
    GettingStarted is enabled.
    endeca is enabled.
    BikeStoreTest is enabled.
create a new file from the output just with the domains that you want to delete and then create a loop
    [HOST]$ vi delete-dd.list
    default
    GettingStarted
    endeca
    BikeStoreTest
    [HOST]$ for i in $(cat delete-dd.list); do; ./endeca-cmd.sh delete-dd $i; done
Remember that this can not be undone, unless you have a backup.

  • Data Domain - Replication Acceleration vs Application Acceleration?

    http://www.datadomain.com/pdf/DataDomain-Cisco-SolutionBrief.pdf
I recently read an article by Cisco detailing the WAAS appliances capability to add addional deduplicaion to Data Domain replication traffic being forwarded across the WAN.  After reading the aricle and speaking with my SE.  He recommended a 674 in Application Acceleration mode vs the WAE 7341 in Replication Acceleration mode.  The article also states Application Acceleration mode was used.
Why is Application Acceleration mode recommended over Replication Acceleration mode for this traffic?
I have a project requiring 15 - 20 GB / day of incremental backups to be replicated between 3 sites.  The sites are 90 ~ 110ms apart and the links are around 20mbps at each site.  Would a 674 in Application Acceleration mode really make a difference for the Data Domain replications?

Is their any possibility you could dig up the configuration that was used on the WAAS Application Accelerator during the Data Domain testing.  I see Data Domain replication service runs over port TCP 4126.  My SE recommends disabling the WAE 674s DRE functions for the Data Domain traffic and simply reply on LZ & TFO.  How do you simply disable DRE, but still use LZ and TFO?
    I see 3 common settings;
    action optimize full                                                       LZ+TFO+DRE
action optimize DRE no compression none          TFO only
    action pass-through                                                    bypass
Can you do LZ+TFO only?  None of the applications in the link below show this type of action setting.  This leads me to believe my SE was really suggesting turn off DRE completely for the WAAS.
    This WAAS needs to optimize traffic for;
Lotus-Notes, HTTP, CIFS, Directory Services, RDP, and Data Domain
Can all applications above + Data Domain be optimized from a pair of WAE 674s in AA mode?

can a time machine usb drive conected to my mac book backup the data from an external usb drive connected to and airport extreme ?

Hi Adam, if you think yoiur HD may be failing you could do a TM restore onto the new disk. I would rather see you do a clone either SuperDuper or CarbonCopy Cloner.Of your internal drive. That way you have a bootable backup in case it does fail.
btw - what are the symptoms of your failing drive?

  • Satellite L350 - Can't install Vista and how can I backup my data?

    Hi to all
I have a Satellite L350 and recently I've installed Vista Home Premium in a different language (the OEM Vista was in English) hoping I could activate it with the OEM key, but I didn't succeed.
When I wanted to re-install the OEM Vista from WinRE I realized I can't access it and then I had a "brilliant" idea that if format the C partition with the Acronis Disc Director it would boot from WinRE. It didn't.
Fortunately Ive burned the recovery discs before. The only problem is that the recovery disc formats the entire HDD and I have data on the second partition I've would like to retrieve.
I tried to install again the retail Vista to backup the data from the second partition (yes, I'm an idiot, I didn't do it before) but it stops after the first reboot. I get a black screen with a low dash blinking.
I really need that data, please help!

    Hi!
I can tell you why you cant install a retail version of Vista by using the product key. This is pretty easy because the key on the bottom side on the notebook belongs to the preinstalled OEM version and cant be used by a retail version.
However, I think the best way to backup your data would be that you put the HDD in an external HDD case and then you can backup your data on another PC or notebook.
Such external HDD cases are not expensive but very useful.
    Bye

  • When installing new software, remember you MUST backup your data.

This is from my own personal FAQ on my own website, but given the number of people who find themselves in a lurch with Snow Leopard, I had to post this again as a reminder for those not privy enough to find it by internet search engines, or look through this board.
It is not a question of if data will be lost, but when. User error, data corruption, hardware failure, bugs in installers all play a part in potential disasters that only a backup can recover from. While you don't have the viruses or worms on the Mac like you do in the Windows world, it should be no excuse to not backup. These incidents can happen at anytime, and frequently without any warning.
User error is the number one cause of lost data. You drag a file to the trash without meaning to, or use a keyboard shortcut used to send a file to the trash, or take a file out of its prescribed location, and the system gets broke. Before moving preinstalled folders or adding files to preinstalled folders, know what files belong where. Ask if you are unsure. And only start moving files once you know your critical files are backed up. In addition, if you lose track of files, and their location, having a backup you know where it exists will help you find those files which you lost. Manage your backups so that information isn't lost by accident.
There are many disk utilities which claim to help keep your hard disk in good shape, and some are better than others, but if you don't have a backup, any of them could actually be worse than the backup software to your data as a simple power failure during use of one of those utilities can make the data get lost forever. Data corruption is probably the number two cause of losing data.
Hardware failure. Eventually all hard disks, tape drives, CDs, DVDs, Zip drives, Zip disks, floppies, tapes, and even drive controllers fail. Hopefully most will not happen during the time between now and when you can afford your next computer, but it could happen. Getting an external source to backup your data to will lessen the risk of any one component making your data get lost forever. Whether it is an external hard drive, CD burner, tape drive, or a zip drive, the more backups of your data you have, the better off you'll be. Some will even say an off site backup is a good idea since a disaster could happen to your home or office that ruins the media on site.
And then there are installers which without warning will remove different versions of programs, and in a few cases have been known to remove all the data on the system by accident.
Always have at least two copies of your data at all times. As the loss of one data source due to any of the above failures means you will need the second backup to recover your data.
And one copy should also be in a remote location in case something happens to the home location whether it is theft, accidental damage, or natural disaster.
In the meantime if you aren't able to make the investment in backup software or hardware at least make yourself a hard copy of all your documents by printing them out. While not as easy to recover from as digital backups, at least you won't be trying to create the data from scratch.
Apple includes Time Machine with Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6.
Apple includes a variety of methods of burning discs:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/index?page=search&src=support_site.results.disambigu ation&q=Burn%20a%20CD%20or%20DVD%20using%20Mac%20OS%20X

    http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html
Apple also warns one in the documentation that comes in PDF on the installation DVD, but it does appear that some don't other to read this.
Data recovery techniques exist, but none are 100% reliable, and some can cost thousand of U.S. dollars if you have failing hardware. So don't think for one moment backing up is optional. The day will come when you wish you had one.

That you can always put on http://www.apple.com/feedback/

  • How to recover backup user data after a restore

I had a disk fail and could not boot. while in the restore software I was able to backup user data to a USB drive. Now that I've restored from the restore partition and got it running windows 7 home again, I don;t see how to recover the user data made with the low level software. Windows back up doesn't seem to recognise it and I can't find an HP utility to get at it.
A program saved with the .wim back up files brought up an HP restore manager application that then copied the filed to my new C drive but how do I actually get it to recover them into their appropriate places and recreate users etc.
Or, should I just consider myself lucky to still have copies of the files at all?  I'll not be real happy about that because it will be a tom of work to recreate everything manually even with the files.
I'm hoping someone out there has a better solution for recovering all my user data into my new restored initial image.
    thanks,
    -dcb

Hello dcbrower, You may be able to use the program Universal Extractor to extract the files in the .wim file.
This is a Free program that can be found at this  Link. .
Just extract the files in the wim file to a location you would like.
Please click the White Kudos star on the left, to say thanks.
Please mark Accept As Solution if it solves your problem.

  • Using DVD-R as backup for data

I thought I could use a blank DVD-R disc as backup for data/files, as I've done with blank CD's in the past. However, loading a blank DVD just starts iDVD and I can't figure out how to transfer files, plus there is no disk icon on my desktop. I'm sure this is a real beginner question, but I just got my iMac. Thanks, David

    Hi David
First thing you need to do is change your preferences so that the DVD mounts on the desktop. Open System Preferences by click the Apple menu in the top left corner of your screen and selecting "System Preferences..."
The select the CDs & DVDs pane in System Preferences. You can change the "When you insert a blank DVD" option to "Ask what to do". You can now close System Preferences
The computer will then ask what you would like to do when you insert the blank DVD, selecting "Open Finder" will mount the DVD on the desktop.
    Hope this helps

  • Unable to create data-domain in Endeca 3.0v

    Hi,
I have installed Endeca 3.0 server in non-SSL mode. The verification URL http://localhost:7001/endeca-server/ws/manage?wsdl is opening up. I could login into the WebLogic Administration Console and could see that the oracle.endecaserver Web application has a State of "Active" in the Administration Console. But when I try to create data-domain using through command prompt I get an error as: 'java' is not recognized as internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
May I know what is preventing from creating data-domain.
    Thanks,
    Anusha.R

It sounds like you are running endeca-cmd[.sh] create-dd as a user who does not have the Java JDK on its PATH.
To set this temporarily for the life of one shell you can follow the instructions in the JRockit Installation and Upgrade Guide, http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E15289_01/doc.40/e15065/post_install.htm#i1066387 . To make this permanent, for Linux you'll want to add this to your shell startup files (.bash_profile) or on Windows follow the instructions to add an environment variable.

  • Tablespace level backup using data pump

    Hi,
Im using 10.2.0.4 on RHEL 4,
I have one doubt, can we take a tablespace level backup using data pump,
bt i dnt wnt to use it for transportable tablespace.
    thanks.

Yes, you can only for the tables in that tablespace only.
Use the TABLESPACES option to export list of tablespaces.*here all the tables in that tablespaces will be exported*.
and you must have the EXP_FULL_DATABASE role to use tablespace mode.
    Have a look at this,

A controlfile create is a fairly trivial task, for either a cold backup or hot backup scenario. Well, its an easy task after you've done the process a few times.
If you have a healthy oracle instance running any place else, preferably at 11gR2, or even a 10g instance can work as an example, get a system connection and do an `alter database backup controlfile to trace;` and the instance will create a new trace file with all SQL commands needed to rebuild the controlfile in the instance trace directory.
Have a look at the trace file, a `show parameter diag` reveals the diagnostic_dest parameter, look for the "trace" directory under that folder, for the latest *trc file. In 10g its `show parameter dump` and the trace file goes straight to the user_dump_dest directory, no digging required.
