  • Should Time Capsule backup my 1st Ext HDD?

I keep my documents on an External Hdd and store Time Capsule backups on a 2nd Ext Hdd. When TM runs it doesn't backup the Document Hdd, only the Int Hdd. Is there a setting I need to enable?

    Hi
having bought a 1TB TC i was hoping it would back up my MBP Hdd and any external USB/FW Hdd that i have been using to store Docs, iTunes and other data such as photos and Final Cut Video projects on.
Problem i have is when i go into the Time Machine prefferences the external hdd connected to the MBP usb ports are already in the exclude list and the - icon to remove them from the exclude list is greyed out.
    Any ideas??
    Cheers

  • Why does ext HDD / time machine run slow?

Apologies if this is answered else where, but I can't find any answers.
I have a MBP running OSX 10.6.8. Connected to it as a Time Machine is a Freecom 400GB 28147 uk, external hardrive connected over USB 2.0. I also have a Mac Mini running 10.6.8.
When connected to my MBP, I have found that it is extremely slow to read files. I gave up using it for Time Machine a while ago as I thought there was a problem Time Machine software causing it to run slow. I have also tried to read the time machine backups through finder and they are still slow to read.
Today (don't know why i didn't do it before now) I plugged it in to my Mac Mini with USB 2.0 and found that I can read all the time machine files at lightning speed, far quicker than my MBP which can take 2-3 mins to open a folder. I have noticed that the hard drive doesn't make its usual whurring noise when im trying to open a folder using the MBP, right up until the last minute before the folder opens.
Does any one have any idea about what might be causing the problem when the the ext HDD is connected to my MBP?
Any thoughts or suggestions greatly appreciated.

How are you connected to it? Network problems could explain at least some of what you're seeing.
More often then not I don't know how long the backups take because when it becomes to annoying I stop the backup.
That guarantees that Time Machine will have to do a "deep scan" the next time, comparing everything on your system to the backups.   That does take a while, but if there are no other problems shouldn't have a major impact on performance.
All of that said, I can't say for certain that there isn't something else going on.  Generally the way I notice the slowdown is when my keyboard inputs come out screwy -- ingB instead of Bring, pplAication for Applicaton for example.  When I know that this is happening I can work "around" it by typing the first letter, pausing for a second or two, then typing the remander.  Does any of this ring an bells?
I've not heard of that specifically, but if you're connected to the Drobo wirelessly, and using a Bluetooth keyboard, there are reports of interference between the two. Try a wired keyboard temporarily, and/or different WIFI channels.

  • How to identify damaged files in ext HDD?

    Early 2008 iMac - iMac8,1 - Intel Core 2 Duo - OS X 10.6.8 - (int) Samsung SSD 840 EVO 500GB - (ext) OWC Qx2 enclosure w. 4x2TB TOSHIBA DT01ACA200 - Wacom Intuos Pen&Touch tablet (no mouse) - DSL - Flash Player.
I think hardware is the place for this question.
I inherited this iMac back in May/June, spent a month or two with it, did a fresh install of Leopard, and then Snow Leopard on top of that. Everything seemed fine. Speedy response. Decent browsing speed, even with my crappy 3 Mbps DSL.
I added two separate HW upgrades: a SSD int hard drive + RAM to 4GB (installed by reputable local shop), and added a 4-bay ext HDD set up as 4 independent drives, JBOD (purchased from OWC). I feel I made a mistake in doing both of those things at the same time, as I immediately encountered glitches that have been hard to troubleshoot. The worst was the ext HDD / enclosure suddenly un-mounting all by itself, complete with error message ("was not ejected properly"), promptly after which the drives reappear on the desktop, with their contents seemingly in place.
I'm not looking for help troubleshooting; I think I've found the problem, at least for the un-mount issue (bad FW port, thankfully there are two). There might or might not be lingering stall-when-opening-folder issues, too soon to tell. Both vendors have been helpful with their responses.
What I'd like to know is how (or if) the contents of the ext HDDs can be scrutinized for damage? This un-mount thing happened at least a dozen times, and several other times I was forced to manually shut down the HDD enclosure when everything else was frozen. I have to think something's been corrupted or damaged with all of that un-ejected off-and-on activity.
Any input is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

No, I've always avoided those like the plague. The pop-up ads for that crap are the obvious cues to stay away!

The only meaningful test of whether there are "corrupt files" is to use the computer. If it behaves normally, you can assume that the operating system and applications are intact. As for your other files, open the most important of them and see whether the contents are what you expect.
Though swapping the FW port SEEMS to have stopped the sudden un-mounting (maybe not enough time spent scrutinizing that yet), there is still problematic behavior. Just this evening, after the desktop was on all day but saw little use (Safari, iTunes), I tried simply opening one of the hard drives:
    - 8 minutes to simply open the window. Spinning beach ball. Window changed dimensions from prior use, appeared as though it was opened for the first time. It showed no contents.
    - 20 more minutes to show contents. During this time, the spinning progress wheel spun. Contents finally showed up.
    - 8 more minutes to open one folder. Spinning progress wheel.
Contents appear to be there. This is a storage disc, no backups ever performed. This new 2TB drive contains only 100GB.
This stall seemingly caused other stalls elsewhere. Namely, a simple text copy-and-paste function in TextEdit. When the HDD finally decided to finish, TextEdit was available to me again.
    Welcome to my world.

  • Ext HDD seen by 2011 MBP but not 2014 MBA

    Hi all
My GF just unboxed a new 13" MBA. One of the models refreshed last week
She wants to set up fresh & just bring over some data from ext HDD's she used with her old MBP.
It is a 2Tb Seagate Drive (USB 3), which has an external power supply.
The drive is formatted into 2 partitions, a 1.5TB OSX Journaled and a 500Gb FAT-32 (for when she needs to transfer files to/from a PC).
The drive shows up fine on her MBP just fine. In Finder & Disk Utility.
However on the new MBA, there is no signs of it at all. Disk Utility & Finder shows nothing.
Both left & right USB ports on the new MBA work ok. I can see a different Western Digital (USB 2) powered ext. HDD no problems.
The Seagate drive LED lights up when plugged into the MBA and you can hear it spinning, it just won't show anywhere in the OS.
    Any ideas brains trust?
I've done all the usual troubleshooting.
Could it be something to do with the firmware on the MBA needing upgrading?
    Thanks, Luke

    hi
typo mistake, what I meant to say is that your external HD is recognised by you old MBP and it is running in MBA but not shown (not being recognised as external USB) as you said that "The Seagate drive LED lights up when plugged into the MBA and you can hear it spinning, it just won't show anywhere in the OS." , have you checked that the power for the exHD on? because as I said ealier that I have ex HD imation 1 Tb used as backup for TimeMachine and someday forgot to turn on the power supply but when the exHD was plugged, the LED ON and I could hear the drive running, unfortunately not recognised by me MBP until I turned the power on. If the power is ON in your exHD then I suggest to contact apple customer service not the community only as you MBA is 2014 and under warranty

  • Exporting iTunes Music to Ext HDD

    Hi all,
I just bought a Seagate 300GB Ext HDD with Firewire.
My intention is to move all songs from iTunes currently in my iMac HDD to the Seagate Ext HDD. Thereafter, I hope to access my iTunes from this ext HDD.
    Pse advise on
    a. Whether there is a need for me to partition the HDD further as I have partition it into 80GB (for iMac HDD backup) and 320 GB.
    b. How to export all somgs in iTunes fron my iMac to the ext HDD
    c. What else I need to do?
I am also seeing a few folders in my finder, they are :
    a. Music.- Inside this folders, I am having:
    - a few other artiste music folders
    - a iTunes folder
    - gararage band folder containing my own mixes
    - music art work for some of the CD covers
    - plus a whole list of MP3 music.
    b. New Music. - Just MP3 music
I am currently using iTunes Ver 6.0.4(3) and on OS X ver 10.3.9
Looking forward to freeing up space on the iMac.
    Thank you
    TC

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Good choice getting an external drive. On the iMac partition (80gb), look into using SuperDuper for creating a clone backup. Great app. Another choice would be CarbonCopy Cloner.
The partitions are really up to you. My choice would be to create one partition matching your existing computer HD, a second parition for holding a "bare-bones" copy of OS X (perhaps including Utility apps. and a browser), and the 3re partition for music etc.). Use Disk Utility to create the partitions after plugging in your drive to the computer.
iTunes - best way to move the music is simply drag/drop your music folder (if you want all music on the external), or your iTunes folder (if you only want iTunes related items on the external) to the external drive after partitioning. Remember though, any music you move to the external to "free up space" still leaves you lacking a backup copy. Something to consider, especially regarding music, garage band items etc. you value. Lacking another external source, and not wanting to keep music on your main drive, consider burning your more valuable items to DVD.
Once the music is transfered to the external, go back to iTunes>Preferences>Advanced>General>Music folder location and select "change", redirecting iTunes to the new external location.
Post back with results, or any other questions.

  • Problem with Time Machine or ext HDD?

I am using a Western Digital Firewire800 ext HDD for my Time Machine back ups. In the past the ext HDD will turn on by itself when my iMac is turned on and the light remains on. Of late I notice sometimes the light turns off and the ext HDD icon on the desktop disappears. I would need to press the power button on the HDD for the light to come back on and the desktop icon to re-appear.
More importantly, in the past Time Machine will auto back up every one hour. It no longer does that. I made an effort to pay close attention yesterday. TM said that the next back up was scheduled for 2.54pm. When it was 2.54pm, even though the ext HDD light was on & the desktop icon was there, TM did not to an auto backup. And the wierd thing is, when I went into TM properties, it now said that the next back up was scheduled for 3.54pm as though it had already done a back up at 2.54pm.
I had to do a manual backup. Do you think something is wrong with my ext HDD or with TM? I still have ample space in my ext HDD btw. Thanks in advance!

It's hard to tell whether it's the drive, the connections, or something in Time Machine.
The 2:54 backup may have been "delayed," due to the drive not being available. See #A1 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), for a handy widget that will display the backup messages from your logs.
See if there was a backup attempt at that time; if there's such a message, that's the reason.
If so, check all the connections to be sure they're snug and secure. Try a "full reset" of Time Machine, per #A4 there. If that doesn't help, try repairing the backups, per #A5 in Troubleshooting.
If still no help, try removing the check from the +Put the hard disk(s) to sleep . . .+ box in +System Preferences > Energy Saver.+ Not all drives respond to that setting, and some WDs have a proprietary "spin down" feature that's near-impossible to remove, but it's worth a try.

It is a hard one.. laptops with small drives are a pain.
What you need is a home media server.
Some people use a PC running itunes for cost.. but that is nothing like as good as using a Mac mini.. they make great little HTPC device.. you can plug in large hard disks and store all your files and media. And share it with the network.. Read up apple's instructions on home sharing.
    https://www.apple.com/au/support/homesharing/
For cost you can buy a mini from 2011 or 2012.. I would not recommend earlier ones.. the advantage of 2012 is they have USB3 ports. But you will pay more for them.. new mini is not as useful.. they have soldered in memory and you cannot upgrade.. the old mini was the most easily modified mac in the whole range. Uses little power and can be bought for a $300US for a good one second hand.. maybe less.

  • Airport Extreme freezing when accessing ext HDD

My Airport Extreme keeps dropping the connections when I try to access files on the WD 3TB external HDD connected in the USB port.
I am able to connect to the internet at all times using either a newly purchased 2012 Mackbook Pro, iPad, iPhone or Windows 7 laptop. But when I try to access my files on the ext HDD, it works 1/10 of the time. I am able to access the drive and partitions, but when I select files, mostly movies (avi & mp4), it will more often then none freeze up and drop the network/internet connection. It will then indicate in the Airport utility that the Airport Extreme is no longer in range and there is no more internet until I disconnect the power from the Airport Extreme, wait a few seconds and reconnect the power. 3 minutes later the Airport Extreme is back on-line and Internet and network are restored. I have had to do this more then 8 times this morning alone.
The Airport Extreme is currently using firmware 7.6.1.
Saw many posts dating back to 2008 and have tried changing configs to recommendations, but nothing is working.
Not sure what to do to correct this, need help.

    Lebruny,
Did you happen to find the cause of the freez up of you AE?.
I have mine connected to a WD 2TB, and when I heavily access the drive, I encounter the same problem you described.

  • Help needed connecting Iomega Minimax Ext HDD to Airport Extreme 802.11n

Would appreciate if someone can help me with the following task. After researching and trying several things, I have not succeed in resolving the issue.
I want to connect a Iomega MiniMax Ext HDD (for Mac) to my (Airport Extreme 802.11n + Time Capsule) box using the USB port at the back of my Airport Extreme. Then I want to access the Ext HDD wirelessly as a drive on my Macbook (snow leopard OS). I was told this was possible at the Apple Store...but have failed so far.
    Any suggestions so far

Hello smitra. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
The following are the basic steps for sharing an external USB drive attached to either an 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) or a Time Capsule (TC):
o Plug the hard disk into the USB port on the back of the base station.
o Open AirPort Utility, located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder on a Mac, and in Start > All Programs > AirPort on a computer using Windows
o Select your base station, and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
o Click Disks in the toolbar, and then, click File Sharing.
o Choose “With a disk password,” or “With base station password” if you want to secure the shared disk with a password, or choose “With accounts” if you want to secure the disk using accounts. If you choose to use accounts, click Configure Accounts, click the Add "+" button, and then enter a name and password for each user that will access the disk. For simplicity, I would recommend using the "With a disk password" option.
o Choose “Not allowed,” “Read only,” or “Read and write” to assign guest access to the disk.
o Select the “Share disks over Ethernet WAN port” checkbox if you want to provide remote access to the disk over the WAN port.
You should now be able to find this drive within Finder under the SHARED category.

  • How i can make a backup without separate hdd?

How i can make a backup without seperate hdd?

how i can partition the hd? please step by step...
    today it's my first apple-day ... i was 18 years windows user
While I agree with everyone else, get a second disk and backup to that disk, I will point you in the directory of partitioning.
Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility
Disk Utility may or may not be able to carve a new partition out of your existing partition, depending on whether the end of the current partition is unused so the current partition can be reduced in size and a new partition added.
It may be necessary to use an external disk, clone your internal disk using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner (both free to use when creating a full clone), then partition your internal disk, and finally restore the external clone to the internal disk again using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner.
If you do not want to get a 2nd disk, then consider using an on-line service such as CrashPlan, Carbonite, Mozy, etc... for the files you absolutely cannot aford to loose.

  • Mapping a ext. hdd on mac to a windows 8 pc

I have an external hdd connected to my mac-mini.  It is initialized in MS-DOS (FAT32), as I want it to be mapped to my windows 8 machine. What do I need to do on the mac-mini to make this ext. hdd visible to be mapped (I know that is a windows term, not sure what the mac term is), to my windows 8 computer.  I am a windows user historically, but moving to the mac side.

I want to buy a mini as a media centre where i can rip my dvds into however because of the mini small int hdd i wanted to buy a 250gb ext hdd and put the dvds in there but can i somehow move the movies folder to the ext hdd and play the stuff of from there in front row

In addition to this, you can also configure iTunes to NOT copy files when they're added to the library, and just add them from the external disk.
I'm currently using both approaches for different things, and both work well. They also work well for network mounted file systems, for those of us who don't want to leave iTunes running (and accounts logged in) on machines all over the place for Bonjour to work, especially when the file server is an early Power Mac G4 with very little memory.

  • Broken links with new EXT HDD

My Aperture library sits on a networked EXT HDD called Pictures HD. I decided the drive was getting a little old so swapped it for a new one. I've copied the entire contents over to the new drive, given it exactly the same name (Pictures HD) but when I open Aperture, all my referenced files are showing up as disconnected. I can't see why this should be as the new drive is basically a clone of the old one.
Any ideas what I need to be doing differently?

If you have already, outside of Aperture, copied all of your referenced files to the new HD (and kept your Library on your system HD), don't use "Relocate Masters". That would have been a better way to populate your new HD -- but that is already done. Use "Locate Referenced Files". This command allows you to tell Aperture to, in fact, locate the Masters of the images in the Library. If you copied without alteration the folder structure of the referenced files, you will be able to simply tell Aperture where one of the Masters is on your new HD, and Aperture will find all the others.
Alternatively, you could wipe the new drive clean with a fresh format, then use the "Relocate Masters" command with both the old and the new HDs mounted.
In general, it is recommended that other than back-up you do all file management from within Aperture. Both "Relocate Masters" and "Locate Referenced Files" work well.
