Backup to external hard drive...how?

Hi everybody, i know this topic has been discussed before, but i've got a few additional questions over-and-above what's been discussed in previous posts. Thanks in advance for your help!
I just picked up a LaCie d2 extreme drive and love the fact that i'm no longer staring at how much hard drive space I have left on my little powerbook.
I've already put a lot of external files on the drive and have now decided that it might be a good idea to make a backup 'image' of my entire powerbook hard drive have it periodically update on my external LaCie drive.
1. I've only got one partition (the one that came formatted by default) on the LaCie drive. Do I need an additional partition simply for the backup image?
2. This is the point that concerns me most. I'm using the free non-registered version of SuperDuper (will see how I like it before upgrading to the full edition). When I want to save an image to my external HD it tells me that the whole volume will be erased first.
I don't want to lose the data already on the external HD so i'm wondering if it is possible to somehow back up an image of my powerbook hard drive WITHOUT erasing my external LaCie first?
Thanks in advance....

Ok,
So i've decided that it would probably be easiest to backup all the data on my external LaCie drive onto my ipod and then reformat the external drive with two partitions: one solely for backups and the other for all the additional files (not on my powerbook). I'll call the main large partition "storage" and the second smaller partition "backup image". Will this work fine?
If so, does this mean that the backups would go straight to the new "backup image" partition created and it would leave the rest of my files untouched (on the "storage" partition)?
Finally, how large should I create the "backup image" partition i.e. how large should I expect the bootable disk image of my 60gb hard drive to be? Ideally i'd like to keep as much room as possible on my "storage" partition.
Thanks in advance!

• When I plug in my ipad it automatically tries to back up and download all the contents to the C drive - the PC is too full and I have iTunes on an external hard drive, how do I tell the system to do the backup to the hard drive please?

You can open a command prompt by hitting the start button and typing CMD<Enter> in the search box that opens up.
To move the current backup folder from C: to D: type in this command and press <Enter>
Move "C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" "D:\Backup"
Where <User> is your Windows user name.
To make iTunes look for the data in the new location type in this command and press <Enter>
MkLink /J "C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" "D:\Backup"
If your external drive has a different letter or you already have a folder called "Backup" then edit "D:\Backup" accordingly in both commands.

• How to backup an external hard drive plugged into a time capsule using time machine

How to backup an external hard drive plugged into a time capsule using time machine.
I want to move my itunes library from the mac HD to an external plugged into the time capsule, but I want to be sure this drive will still be backed up by time machine. I currentlly see no way to do this.

There is no way. You can connect the drive to your Mac and remove it from the Time Machine exclusion list. Then it will be backed up, but that will stop when you reconnect it to the TC. While it's connected to the TC, you can copy it manually to another AirPort Disk by following the instructions here (with a slight modification):
Using AirPort Utility to make a copy of the Time Capsule disk

• I did backup from my Imac to external hard drive, how can I unzip that backup to my mac

I did backup from my Imac to external hard drive, how can I unzip that backup to my mac again

It may be Time Machine, but Time Machine doesn't store backups in .zip folders. Open Finder and select your backup external disk in the Finder sidebar, under "Devices". If you are using Time Machine, you should see a folder called "Backups.backupdb".
If you are using Time Machine and you want to restore a full Time Machine backup, there are different methods depending on the Mac OS X version you are using. Open  > About this Mac, see Version and tell me what version you are using

• Time Machine won't backup my external hard drive.

I am trying to get Time Machine to backup my external hard drive. I have the external drive formated as Mac OS Extended (journaled) and I have also removed the drive from the Excluded list. I put some 'test' files on the external drive and told TM to do a backup and when it is finished the only way I can see my external hard drive in TM is if it is connected to the computer. It doesn't seem to be backed up anywhere in TM that I can see. Please Help
Thanks.

My thinking is that if my external hard drive craps out it would be ok because it would be backed up on the TM (what I'm trying to get it to do) How would I open the external drive if it was damaged and then invoke time machine?

• Does Time Machine backup other external hard drives?

I am using a Seagate 500 GB to backup my data. Will Time Machine backup another external hard drive on which I store my iMovie projects? If so, how do I access them in the Time Machine mode? Thanks in advance.

strange, my external HDs were added to the exception list automatically. maybe because they wouldn't fit on the time machine volume.
It seems to depend on when the drives were connected. When you first turn Time Machine on, it only excludes the TM drive itself, and any drives not formatted HFS+.
If you connect a drive later on, that drive will be excluded automatically.

• Unsual question about backup to external hard drive

Hi,
I have a large iTunes library on my laptop (+140GB). My hard drive is running out of space. I am planning on backing up my music and everything in iTunes to a backup 2TB external hard drive. I know how to do this but I like to tweek it a little: I want to be able to back up all my files to the external drive AND then delete some of the less-used songs on my internal drive. BUT i want to keep them in the external hard drive! Is this possible?
I know I am probably not clear, so please let me know.
Thanks,

I'd normally suggest this method for backing up.
You should always keep at least two copies of any file you don't want to lose.

• Can time capsule backup an external hard drive

Trying to backup an external hard drive to time capsule, through time machine. Possible?
My drive is greyed out in the Time Machine exclude options.

Yes, when the drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or if other means are used to back the drive's contents up.

• HT1175 Apple Time capsule to backup my external hard drive - on exclusion list???

I want to set apple capsule to backup my external hard drive, but it is currently in the exclusion list.
I can't remove it from the exclusion list, because I can't select it and the - option is greyed out.
It is a WD Passport, used for document files only.
With thanks.

Time Machine can't back up drives in some formats, such as FAT32.

Ensure that the external is correctly formatted
Drag and dropped the files
Test to be sure that the moved files work
Once the moved files work delete the originals

My computer was totally destroyed & I do not have backup or external hard drive with my saved iTunes library from it. That was the only computer authorized to play library. I do not have an iPod or iPhone with any of that library (which has over $2K in music purchases & over 5K in songs I ripped). Will I be able to access my iTunes library when I purchase a new computer?

You should be able to access your past iTunes purchases. You'll need to re-rip your CDs See: HT2519 - Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store.

• Time Machine Backup of external hard drive connected to IMAC

I have an external hard drive connected to my IMAC. I also have a 2TB Time Capsule connected to my network. I store all of my video (both events and projects from imovie) to the external hard drive to save space on the IMAC. Does the Time Capsule backup this external hard drive? When I open Time Machine I don't see where the external hard drive is backed up? The drive is formatted MAC OS extended (journaled).

nujac,
Time Machine backs up all locally attached drives unless you specifically exclude them in System Prefenences > Time Machine > Options.. icon.
You should be able to see this in Finder, enter TM and highlight the external drive. Click back to a prior date. Sometimes it takes a little while to fully populate the display since it's reading across the network, give it a few minutes.
